[Q] Captivate Discontinuation - General Questions and Answers

I have to take my Cappy in for some warranty work and I am almost certain that they will just end up replacing the phone for me. However, when I was in the att store the other day I couldnt help but notice the super sleek 4.5 in screen on the infuse. Does anybody know when att will no longer carry the captivate so that when I go into the store they will replace it with the infuse instead?
Thanks

Anybody?

i'm not sure when it's going to be discontinued, but are you sure they'd give you the Infuse 4G as a replacement? usually they give you the same phone if they can or something of lesser value? but i'm not sure, i just remember reading someone taking in their Vibrant and then it was replaced with something called Galaxy S standard or something (prob one of the lower-end Galaxy S phones i'm assuming?)

Unfortunately that's not how the insurance policy works. The insurance company that ATT uses (they all use) will carry the phone at least 6 months after its discontinued. The only way they will replace it with something different is if it its been replaced multiple times for reasons out of your control and if you are a good customer and the stars align. Even then they decide what phone they give you as a replacement, you don't get to pick. Believe me this almost never happens though.

T-Mobile Qustion. Please help

I have asked this question before in the xda general section but no responces so maybe ill have luck here. So I purchased the Galaxy S 4g 1 month ago and while I like this phone I want to exchange it for the g2x. I just want to know if its possible, if anyone has tried exchanging their phone after the 14 days because this is my second unit and I am still having major battery issues. Ive tried everything from recalibrating the battery, putting the screen on the minimum brightmes+ screen filter, juice defender, going back to completely stock with no apps, etc and my battery life is still pretty terrible. After playing ONE hour of words with friends (bored and i just wanted to test) my phone goes from 100 to 20%. Words with friends isnt even a cpu heavy game and it took that much out of the battery? Its just unacceptable so I want to try out the g2x which from what I have read has amazing battery life for an android device. So if anyone can provide any advice on what can I do to exchange this phone I would greatly appreciate it. The earlier I change this phone the better. Sorry if this question has already been asked. Ive done a search and i didnt find anything. Thanks

It's called warranty. So unless you bought a different region phone that nullifies warranty, contact the manufacturer and explain your problem, they'll have you ship it back to them for a fix. When you get a working unit back, either enjoy it, or sell it and get something else.

This is my second phone, I already used the waranty because my first had the exact same problem so instead of going through the entire process again I just want to avoid the galaxy s 4g all together and get the g2x. Selling the phone isnt really an option either because who would want a galaxy s 4g when there is the g2x, the sensation, and galaxy s 2 right around the corner. I only got this phone because I was doing a switch of responsibility which means my 2 years starting all over again so I decided might as well upgrade. Now im stuck with this thing.

Yes, if it was less than thirty days then it's possible. If it's beyond thirty days then you may have a hard time. My girl bought a Vibrant and didn't like it, but liked my Hd2 running Cm7. It had been 27 days since she bought the Vibrant, and she was able to return it, and me pay the 100.00 difference for a MyTouch 4g. So, the end result was she got my HD2, and I got a new MyTouch 4g. She had to complain (in store) about the Vibrant, and the manager approved the return. Technically, you have 14 days, unless a manager approves the return. Just don't make it obvious that the only reason you're returning the Galaxy is because the G2x is out.
You might want to try customer loyalty if you can't find a manager.

Thanks for replying. I think im going to have big issues in returning this phone then. I just realised that this is my 2nd month not 1st owning this phone. Plus our store reps where I live arent too friendly. My mom got a feature phone because she doesnt need a data plan but when she wanted to return it and couldnt within 14 days because of constant snow storms they did not let her even after talking to the manager. They kept saying well thats to bad, you had 14 days. Ill still try it out though, if that doesnt work ill try calling customer service.

I remember reading somewhere that words with friends is a major battery killer. Anyways, you could try offering to return the phone and resigning a new two year contract with the g2x. When in doubt, mention switching to another provider.

This.
If all else fails, sell that Vibrant 4G on Craigslist. I bet you can easily get close to $500 for it. Especially if it's brand new and in perfect condition. If you have everything it came with, reseal it and sell it new in box.
since the g2x is out, the GS will not worth $500 anymore...since the full retail price of the g2x is $500

How to really fix your gps.

Excuse me if this is not in the appropiate section but i found it fit here nicely.
Maybe it has being talk about and gotten lost in the thousand of post and treads, now while some try different things in roms and such or plums gps fix or gps aids.... The best way i found and is working is to exchange your phone. But you must make sure the new one they give you has the 1102 in back.
From what research all launch phones have the gps hardware issue and no matter what we did it would't make it better. I went to at&t to exchange my phone but they said they couldn't do anything and I send me to a authorized repair shop and I just walked in and exchange it. while I was there I ask many questions and it'll turn out to be that's the launch phones were all lemons and some refurbish that were from returns still have the same issue.
so just make sure you go to the at&t and exchange it I didn't buy it at at&t but fry's electronics, they still exchange it by just walkin in there and told what my phone had.and exchange no questions asked.
I hope this helps people and if this doesn't belong here please change it appropriate a section

Yeah it's the wrong section.
Did you have to sign that form where you have to pay $600 if they determine that your phone is no longer under warranty?
I've messed with my phone enough physically and software that they could probably legally find a reason to enact that if they wanted to... I've never liked the idea of leaving a potential $600 profit up to "if they want to"
Yes i have played with the usb port door was broken multiple scratches multiple rom flasesh almost everything you can think off. And no i didnt sign any papers i didnt buy it at att but frys electronics.

This past Saturday I exchanged my 1006 Captivate and received a new 1008 at an AT&T Device Support Center.
My original unit was purchased from Amazon on launch day. I flashed the phone back to stock JF6 before bringing it in. I explained to them that the GPS couldn't consistently get a lock and that the phone experienced increasing random shutdowns (the last part was a bit of an exaggeration, but I figured I'd throw that in there to increase my chances of a replacement). The whole ordeal was fairly hassle-free.
I realize that my 1008 is an older production batch than the 1102s that every else seems to be getting, but my GPS works now, and that's all that matters. Plus, the replacement has a 90-day warranty, so if anything goes wrong, it's back to AT&T I go.

Help with AT&T replacement phone

Hi there,
My roommate owns a Samsung Infuse, and had to send it back after he threw it and it wouldn't turn on. Now he got the replacement infuse last night and he ran it over with his car on our way to the tanners.
My question is, what will AT&T do? Will they replace the second phone since it hasn't even been 24 hours? Or since he damaged it physically, will they not take it back?
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium
My suggestion is if you are not the same retardness as your friend, get far away from that person.
Just a matter of time he will throw you out and run you over.

Right , sounds like your friend is as mentally damaged as his phone is physically damaged, I would suggest he just gets one of the old nokia brick phones if he wants to throw and drive over his handsets, haha

Well, stock Infuse is infuriating, so I can't really blame him. But it was on the roof of his car when we pulled out, and when we got back we saw it completely shattered. So he didn't run it over on purpose.
He just has some anger issues But he needs his phone, since we go out of town every weekend for work. Currently, he's using an old Palm with a shattered screen. I was hoping somebody with AT&T replacement experience would be able to help us out. We're considering just calling and saying the replacement arrived like that. But we'll see.
Well if you are looking for a replacement I would def say go with the Galaxy Note. It's pretty much an amazing phone/tablet.... thing. I am waiting for it to come to Sprint

VZW offered me a replacement for my Charge. Thoughts on which one I should consider?

The following phones were offered to me by VZW as a replacement for my Charge...
Rezound
Bionic
Spectrum
Though Nexus was mentioned, the rep wasn't sure that they could offer it to me. I told them that since I wasn't asking for a replacement, that these offers were something that'd I'd consider. Sounds like the Nexus might still be a consideraton.
Nonetheless, any thoughts of one over the other? Should I try to convince them to offer the Nexus?
Stop thinking and jump all over the Rezound. Hands down best. It's a sleeper of a device. The development community is started coming around as if late. A stellar device with outstanding performance out of the box that is greatly improved by upgrading to the latest sense/ics ruu.
Rezound. No doubt. I've used the Rezound and Spectrum. Both great devices, and both better than the Bionic, but the Rezound is the better of the two devices from the standpoint of the dev community. As soon as someone gets S-OFF on that device it's going to be unstoppable.

HTC devices have a flag that allows or disallows certain portions of the device to be written to. S-ON means that it's locked from writing, and S-OFF means that it's unlocked and can be written to. It's the equivalent of a locked vs. unlocked bootloader on a Moto device.
no doubt go with the rezound but when you go to talk to the rep bring up the nexus again see if you can get it if not take the rezound i was trying to get a replacement today and all the lady would do was to factory reset my phone
may I ask what problems you were having that they offered you a replacement? because I have a lot of problems but don't want to call them about it because all they do is just tell me is to factory reset...so if I have the same problem it might be worth while for me to call!

First one overheated when charging because I was not told that it should be considered mandatory to install samsung drivers even if you just want to chage. Since not all laptops output the same voltage through their USB, or even all of the multiple usb ports on the same laptop, you can overcharge to the point of warping your battery and cooking eggs.
Second one was a horrible audio issue that has plagued all of my phone replacements.
Next one was overheating and a battery replacement and audio I believe.
This is the 4th one, and it's still got the audio issue where random calls will squelch or scream so loudly in your ear piece that its deafening... and the other person can't hear it. There are also pops and other phone audio issues and long of the short, it's related to the hardware version of your phone and the software used to equalize the sound. Since it can't equalize it, you get fog horn like blaring sound.... that's the big that gave her issue to offer the replacement. There are at least 3 or 4 revisions, if not more, for this phone.
With the difference in hardware revision, at least one version doesn't give the audio issues, but they can't cherry pick the version that they send to you.
Overheating is another reason they'll replace, and this one gets to 125 degrees, which they say is within specified acceptable range. But 125 is hot when it's just sitting there taking a charge or just sitting at your desk.
Typically, after your 3rd replacement, they consider offering you a different manufacturer phone replacement. Sometimes they'll do it on the 3rd one, but one way I've always had them initiate the offering of another make and model is I question the reliability of the maker of the phone.
"Is it me, or do I see a lot of complaints about this phone on the Verizon boards? I mean, I've spoken to a couple of your support reps, and they even confirm that there seem to be a higher quanity of complaints than other brands. What phone do you have?" Etc.
Now you're letting them talk about themselves.
I started with a Fascinate. They replaced it 4 times, so I had 5 phones. I contact corporate customer service, they replaced it with a retail box Charge, twice. Then the other issues came down to where I am getting satisfaction from your standard Tier 2 Tech Support. I don't even call 611 anymore. I call the 800 line direct for their T2, and they've typically been great people to deal with directly. Even when you ask for TS when you call 611, you get customer service 9 out of 10 times. They're supposed to forward you, but they don't.
If you want to know who I emailed about my original issue from my Fascinate that gave them someone to contact me about giving me the Charge, let me know. I'll post them here. BTW, when they upgraded me from Fascinate to Charge the first time, they wanted me to extend my contract 2 years and pay 100 bucks. I said no (end of summer 2011). This is considered a warranty replacement if you're changing my phone. Then 50 and a 2 year renewal, then 0 and a 2 year renewal, and then they gave in... free retail box replacement and NO renewal. My contract is up this Thanksgiving where I'll get a new phone for a buck at Sam's club on Black Friday.
I can't get them to offer me anything but another charge. I'm already on my 5th cln charge. What number or whom did you email to get the offer?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
I got offered a bionic and a resound. I took the resound so much better. Never buying Samsung again but might change with gs3 lol. Took me a while to get used to the screen still kinda miss amoled but the GPS is so much faster screens easier on my eyes I think amoled stressed my eyes more than lcd. Only negative so far is battery life seems worse on this phone but I'm always around power so no biggie. Phone feels better in hand and did I mention fast. So yea my vote got to rezound and imo much better than a nexus.

5th phone? That's rediculous. Here's and edited version of what I posted over at AC about how I got my 3G Fascinate changed to a Charge. Also, I'm at work, so my editing of my own words may seem a bit erratic. I'll apologize ahead of time.
I previously used:
•[email protected]
•[email protected]
•[email protected]
in an executive email carpet bomb and got someone from the executive level customer service to contact me for my Fascinate replacement to give me a Charge. Note a couple of things in how to perform the email carpet bomb before you write your own, and be firm about what you want. I stated that I wanted a retail box, not certified like new, replacement and received it.
Basically, when you carpet bomb these folks, one of them has the issue assigned like a normal tech support ticket that requires someone to RESOLVE your issue. In the course of my resolution, they asked me to cough up $100 and a 2 year renewal to my contract. I said no. Then $50 and a 2 year renewal. Then $0 and a 2 year renewal. Again, I said no. I was not going to accept this as anything less than a warranty replacement with a better device.... and I won. In about an hour, she was shipping me a new Retail box Charge, and though she had to make the modifications that kept my account as not needing a 2 year renewal (which required me to make a call-back to fix the renewall/contract issue because that really was the only ).
So yes, you can get what you want as long as you are firm in your consumer advocacy beliefs, command and don't demand.
All of that said, I'm on my 4th or 5th Charge since September, and the first heated up so hot that you could fry an egg on it; then replaced by another Retail box Charge where the ear piece is went out. At least the next two phones were heat for one, and audio for both. There are even known issues that nobody is publishing, like the audio equalization/modulation and data connectivity staying enabled (which may be resolved per the last patch). I say this because if you can get them to acknowledge the Verizon documented issue with the Samsung device, you might gain yourself some more leverage. Also, if you note an accent in the person's voice, ask them where they're from. Catch them off guard.
Is that a NY accent I hear?
Yes.
Really? What part? I was born in Brooklyn.
yadda yadda ... talk about Sabrett hot dogs, Carvell Ice Cream, Knishes, etc.
"I detect a Southern accent." Same type of dialog as above, just make it match something from the South because they could care less about Sabrett hotdogs and Carvell ice cream, but no matter what, slow down. When you recognize that you're dealing with someone from the South, they don't like rushing through a conversation, and LOVE to chit chat/socialize before business. Talking about golf, whiskey, and the smell of cow pastures irritating you come to mind when I needed to just get the guy to sign a piece of paper so I could leave his office come to mind.
I've lived all over the US, and when you acclimate your speech and mannerisms to the person you're trying to mimic, you actually gain a semblence of control and can lead them if you do it right. I don't state or say this key information lightly. It can be the difference of getting another Certified Like New phone, or you getting them to give you their direct email address, phone number, ext, ect ect. More flies with honey and all that.
Note that nowhere in my documentation did it state that I had to install USB drivers on any Windows based PC or laptop before using the USB to charge my phone. Consider this MANDATORY!! Not all USB ports output the same voltage, and the drivers help to regulate this. This is why my first Charge overheated to the point of overheating. This bit of oversite seems to have gotten their attention. They may tell you that its not hard to see why you had USB issues by not installing drivers, but insist that they note that you do not use the PC USB ports to transfer data. You use them for charging your phone only.
Good luck to anyone that needs to beat on Verizon to do the right thing. If you need, I can even send you a copy of the bloviated email I sent to the executive team that got me these results. Just make sure that you PM me for it, as I can only rarely come back here and play in the XDA sandbox. Just brought home one of them there newborns from the hospital, and after taking two weeks off and then going back to work, my ADHOCDD is in overload.

PS If you want to learn about effective email carpet bombs, the Consumerist has greate info.
You may have to do a little bit of work, but my EECB's always get attention, and nearly always get exactly what I want. And "What you want" should be considered BEFORE you contact them. They'll ask you straight out... "What would satisfy you today?" Know that what is, don't expect the Stars when all you deserve is the moon.
In the past few weeks...
$33 refund from Sears, and they felt inclined to give me an additional $30 GC for the store.
$30 GC for another store that understood why I didn't believe that I should have went to another one of their stores to fix an issue.
I just wish that I could EECB about my Ex-Wife. I'd like a redux.
Take the rezound. It is hands down the best on that list, maybe even the best phone available, period.

Well I took the Rezound so i am off to learn all there is. I needed to get away from Samsung if for no other reason just to try something new.
If I hate Sense 4.0 (I cannot go without flashing the latest and greatest) I can always come back to Sammy with the GS3 or whatever they want to call it in a few months.
They just released an S-OFF method for the Rezound, so the dev community should explode. Have fun! Wish I could join you..

yeah i have been trying to read up on it all. So much different than sammy and even the TB I used for a few days.....but that is progress I guess.
Well, I just got off of the phone with them, and I'm getting the Rezound much to my chagrin. I was really hoping that they'd turn the table and reconsider the Nexus. In the end, they wouldn't because...
It had a dual core processor.
+Ummm, so does the Rezound
It's got a worse camera.
+ ummm, shouldn't the downgrade be my choice?
It has internal flash vs external.
+ Whatever.
Maybe I'll canvas Craigslist got a trade. I wanted the Nexus because I got into stoop development last year and am about to jump back in. What better phone to have than the nexus?
With my contract coming up in November, I'll have the Rezound and whatever Sam's is selling for a buck on Black Friday. I just hope that it's not a Rezound.
Thanks for the input folks. I'll be heading over to the Rezound forum to start reading up. At least they're giving me a week to 10 days to test run the Rezound.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA
You could try to go to a store with it, say you don't like it and ask if you could get a Nexus instead.
So i take it that everyone feels about the same in that the Rezound is the better phone through Verizon?
I am currently going through the same process with them about this phone sucking. They offered me any phone they have besides the new RazrMaxx.
So ive been stuck between the Rezound, Nexus, and Razr.
Any one have any thoughts between those?
Rezound.

Warning to those with T-Mobile Warranty

Last week on Tuesday I decided to get a warranty replacement, now... I'm well aware that these are refurbished phones and that they can be damaged, etc. T-Mobile, however, assures you that they are to appear "Like-new". Well, the device came the next day as promised and what do I see? 10-12 dead pixels and... spotting behind the screen... like WATER DAMAGE! At this point I'm thinking... "Wtf T-Mobile?" So I give 'em a call, they tell me they'll send out another and that they are sorry for the inconvenience... Well, this time Friday rolls around and the delivery comes... I grab the box and get ready to open it with my Partner, jokingly I say to him... "Let's see how messed up this one is!" and I open the box... Well, the second one they sent has a LARGE chunk out of the MAO in the bottom left corner of the device... like it had been dropped. I'm pissed at this point... I call T-Mobile and because it's a defect in the "hardware" I had to take it down to the store to get a rep to verify that the device was damaged (also still in the warranty box they send out) and at this point they take $25 off my bill and offer me yet another warranty replacement!!! UGH!! So, the new one is coming today... If it's messed up I am demanding that they send me a new one. I'm so upset at this point... My device I sent to them to begin with was damn near flawless other than (from what I could tell) software issues.
What do y'all think? I'm starting to believe they don't even perform these so-called "Quality checks"

If I even get one more messed up one I'm gonna make them give me a new One S... I bought this phone, I'm sticking with this phone. They WILL give me a new one. Heh. Also, I came from the GSII... Don't do it... the DPI is weird and everything is HUGE on the screen. Lol. I didn't like it mainly because with the default TouchWiz roms you can't change DPI or the UI is all diff sizes and messed up... Now... On custom CM10 roms, etc you can change DPI and it looks amazing at like 200 DPI or so... but back then the bugs were too much to stay on custom roms.
Went through these with my wifes amaze. I demanded a brand
New one s and got it.

Yea, I've never had an issue with T-Mobile warranty...that's how I got my One S...I had a Sensation, then complained enough, and they upgraded me to the One S at no charge. It might be a pain to go through numerous phones before getting a good one, but you can't beat the fact that they overnight you a phone with just a simple phone call, great service.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
Your talking about assurion right? cause theyre their own company. theres a big difference. and yea id be pissed to pay a deductible and get a messed up phone. the last time i had my phone replaced by them it was pretty much brand new so im sorry for your luck :/
Im more curious as to why you sent your original back, if all it had was a software issue?

Agreed. Doesn't make any sense. You would figure that since he's on XDA, that he'd try to flash a new ROM, reflash the original, etc, to get it back to normal.
Then again, some people are hardcore about not wanting to touch their phone's ROM. I on the other hand, am absolutely disgusted by HTC Sense and all the fancy pants bull**** it has. Simplicity, minimalism, and speed are where it's at.

It stopped saving screenshots (not a big deal) however, it shortly after started saving all photos taken with the camera as 0byte files. NOTHING fixed it. I even put the phone back to S-On and unlocked, re-rooted, redid the S-Off... Nothing helped. Kinda useless if I can't take pictures. I also tried many different roms.
Also, the warning was to say that if you need a replacement... make sure you can deal with going through 4-5 before you get one that is fully intact. The last one they sent me (#3) had the screen popping up out of the device. You could see the button backlights fron the side if you looked at it, got yet another coming tomorrow.
