switching from ext3 kernel to ext4 kernel and back again - T-Mobile LG G2x

I have a nagging question about switching from ext3 to ext4 kernels. I flashed a rom (1.20) and than flashed the ext3 kernel and than the ext4 kernel. I want to flash and update to the rom which is ext3 only. Do I just flash a ext3 kernel on my present rom and then flash the updated rom or can I just flash the rom over the present rom which has ext4. I kind of wish I had never flashed ext4 at this point. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

all of the roms out have ext3 so u could wipe cache and then wipe dalvik then flash the rom over it the ext4 kernel, or the ext3, like say faux updated his rom u could flash that over it and u would be fine then u would have his ext 3 kernel installed, u do know that his roms come preinstalled with the ext3 kernel rite??? its just up in the op for people if they want to use it for cyanogen mod, so when u flash his rom it will have his latest ext3 kernel already installed, and if u want the ext 4 kernel u would have to install that over it

better yet dude do u have a nandroid of an ext3 rom? restore back to that and ull be good, for future reference always well i always make a backup of the rom i like with the ext 3 kernel, i get the rom how i want it then back it up....then if i want to slap a ext4 kernel on i do then when i dont want it or have an updated version of the rom (like fauxs) ill just restore my ext3 nandroid and update the rom then make another backup of it then slap the ext4 kernel back on if i want it. basically i never backup a ext4 kernel on my rom......the only thing i backup is ext3, and when u install the updated rom over ur previous rom like lets say faux updated his rom just wipe cache and dalvik and install rom all ur apps, and everything will still be there

Question about EXT4

What recovery is best for ext4.. i am currently using the latest xm recovery but i heard there was a better recovery that supports ext4... i am currently installing the revolutions zip ext4 so it formats my phone before i install any rom.. does that make my phone ext4 or should i install another recovery system?

I was passing thru but I think I can shed some light hopefully. I don't know about this "xm", but if it's anything like the EXT4 Recovery or Clock work recovery, or amon_Ra...If the recovery is a EXT4 specific recovery it should convert the file system to EXT4 only[/system, /cache, /data] when ever you wipe. But you need to flash a EXT4 enabled ROM also to take full advantage, a EXt3 ROM[EXt3 is default on all roms w/o EXT4] will work on the EXT4 partitions, but won't be as fast.
4EXTRecovery, it's awesome, everything is working great for me, used it to format my paritions to EXT4 without losing any data.

[Q] EXT3 or EXT4 for SAGA LBC MOD

Hi all,
as I have not yet enough thraeds I can't post in the Development section. As the new SAGA LBC MOD V.0.6 is on the way (I am using 0.5.4) I would like to know how my partitions should be formatted using this mod?
Should everything be EXT4 or EXT3 or even a mixture as I have today.
I have flashed the recovery and I am now on 4EXTRecovery v2.1.0 which shows following FileSystems
system ext4
data ext3
cache ext3
sdcard fat32
When SAGA LBC MOD v0.6 is out I want to start from scratch with a perfect configured device.
Please advice what I should do.
THX
LBC Mod fully supports ext4, there is no reason to use ext3 for any partition as ext4 offers some performance increase. SD stays fat32 of course, there is no need for sd-ext on our phone.
Thanks for your quick answer.
I will then partition my Filesystem to EXT4.
Thank you.

Don't worry about doing any specific partitioning, ensure that you're using the correct RECOVERY EXT4.
If you're not then download EXT4 Recovery if you don't already have it and use CWM to flash it.
There is an option in EXT4 recovery which will show you the type of all of your partitions and another option that will convert any EXT3 to EXT4 without data loss.
Although the LBC WIPE script that it is recommended that you run before you flash LBC v0.5.3 will pre format all of these partitions in the correct format (EXT4) before you flash the ROM!

[Q] Ext4 partition

I have a question about ext4 convert here.. Let's say I've flashed to a custom rom that converts my phone's partitions to ext4, once I flash a stock firmware on top of it, do the partitions stay in ext4 or back to rfs?
No it converted to rfs
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA App
Ok... What about I wipe date from cwm? Does that revert the partitions back to rfs as well?
I don't think by wiping your data cache u can revert back to rfs. you have to reflash for rfs.

Wiping doesnot changes the partition format. When you flash a new firmware the partitions will be converted to rfs.
send from gt-i9003 using android keyboard
I have a big Q!
Once i flashed KPH and i tried to convert to ext4 via CWM, but i had a problem, after doing a backup i flashed the ext4 zip, when i tried to restore the nandroid i stuck on bootloop!
Any idea of what could have caused this?

Could be the reason, but many guys at another forum did it and it worked perfect for them, i think the error could be in the flash of kph, so the whole process went bad
Lucasred, i had the same problem twice. But i had tried it with XXKPQ.

Yes, I'm using it.
For the others: the restore of the nandroid backup after the conversion failed whenever I tried to convert the phone before deodexing it. Try to deodex first, and then convert.
What I found weird was that the error was "not enough space", but when I tried to restore the backup on rfs it worked, doing the same after the ext4 conversion gave the error. I don't know how you could convert the partitions in ext4 with an odexed rom, I didn't look for any solution, maybe if you don't want to deodex your rom you could try to remove some system apps or something like that before the nandroid backup, in order to get more space.

Rfs file system :(

Is there any way i can change the file system to EXT-4 so that i can get the clockwork mod or can i do something else?
Now mine is RFS file system....
Tried installing some custom roms still my fs is RFS only
Can't able to install CYANOGEN MOD It stuck on the boot screen for approx 1 and half hour which is a black screen written "android" on it. bcoz of RFS file system i think
I JUST WANT THE CYANOGEN MOD.
PLEASE HELP ME OUT Is thr any other method for converting RFS to EXT 4 file system
1st save any cm roms on the root of your sd card...
Flash cwm by tj_style
wipe data, wipe cache
flash the cm rom of your choice
wipe data, wipe cache..reboot...
Try switching on without sim card...
- Via xda premium
format system and flash cwm by wiping dalvik too.....
and dont go deep into rfs fs you cant change it ext4 on stock rom....and rfs in noway is involved in installing other roms and bootloops...

pls help about ext4 mount

I m using stock Rom and early flash ateeq kernel v3. also support int.d . when I m using increase memory script like m2sd, ungaze,a2sd my ext4 not mount on boot pls help about it
....
if you are on CMW switch to twrp or Yaano's recovery
Use TWRP 2.2.2.0 by oblikas, it works with ext4 fs. The Yannou's recovery mount sd-ext with ext4 fs, but when you make a backup it saves sd-ext as ext3 fs and when restore you don't have ext4 no more.
Anybody found some fixes for yannou's recovery?
And the new TWRP 2.3.3.0 doesn't see sd-ext with ext4 fs.
Anybody tried TWRP 2.3.3.0 with sd-ext and ext4 file system?
