Hi all,
Just bought a Xoom tablet.
I'm trying to get my laptop to have its files shared from it to the tablet... But haven't had any luck, either the laptop has its limitations or its the tablet itself.
I'm on Vista.
I know theres Apps you can download to share files, but I was wondering if there was a way to do it directly?
Apart from using wires of course....
Any ideas?
Share a folder in Windows and use ES File Explorer to browse the network. This works for me.

Astro with samba module, you can view all your files on your pc
Hi everyone,
Still don't have any luck....
Downloaded ES FileExplorer but I'm not sure what to put in the username and password field...
Plus I'm not sure if the files are being shared on vista or not, its acting very cumbersome >_<

Search on google how to setup network share in vista, I'm sure you will find a how to. I don't have Vista to give you a step by step how to.
If you decide to go the app route, Pogoplug has a new software that you can install on your PC for free (as in, it's not a physical device like their original product), and you can access it anywhere with a web browser, or through the (free) app on your Xoom.

i got pogoplug and works great on my xoom
im stumped.
All i want to do is move over a video and some music files from my pc to my Transformer tablet using the USB charging cable. My pc is running XP.
I dont have dock/keyboard or an sd card. Just my tablet. I figure i could do this with the usb charging cable. My tablet should show up as a mass storage drive on the pc right?
went to the site to install drivers. Asus sync works, so does my Splashtop remote. I also downloaded a zip file called "ASUS Android USB drivers for windows" and a RAR file called "pc suite_v1_0_18".
asus usb driver i got some MTP error
pc suite i got error "application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000135)
I figure this would be simple. I figure "Pc Suite" should help me move files? I dont know what it is since it wont install. or maybe i could use splashtop? I really dont know.lol All i want to do is move over some files through the usb cable. 15+ experience with computers and I'm embarresed asking all this.
You rebooted both devices?
Wifi explorer also works.

guess i'll give wifi explorer a try. who uses usb anyway right? lol
but I should be able to use usb though right? isn't it supposed to show on my pc as a drive along with the other drives under 'my computer'?
it should also show up as a drive in my computer. like you mentioned. all the other android builds show device as a drive. I would say driver issue
I don't know the size of your video but on smaller files I'll just use dropbox.
Now if someone can tell me how to do it on a mac I'll be happy. I have 4 other android devices and all mount fine.
It just gets mounted as a standard USB drive when I plug my TF into PC, just copy files as you would with any thumb drive
Go market install ES File Explorer, its Free
Create a share folder or setup a share on existing folder on your PC
Go to the LAN mode of ES File Explorer on your tab and scan for new server, select the server or IP address on the same network
there you go, can copy file from PC to tab...no root needed
CHeers
Adb push? Mounting doesn't work with Honeycomb, because they doesn't use FAT32 anymore. All data is in ext4 now.

No - Honeycomb doesn't use USB mass storage, it uses MTP. If you are using XP, you should install Windows Media Player 10 at a minimum to gain MTP support.

The Mac doesn't natively support MTP. You need this.

THANKS for all the responses so far!
I've only had a droid phone (Optimus V) for 3 months. Its my first smartphone and now i've stepped it up to this tablet. Not rooted.
To clarify my original post I'm trying to move a large movie file to my tablet and give Vital player a try. The info provided by the responses so far have been a big help.
THANKS again for helping a noob out.
Very simple, but not least expensive.
I use a Tonido plug ( ubuntu based server) on my network ( always on) to store any files I want to share. I can have access and stream from it on my local wifi network or remotely via direct IP connect. Using ES file Explorer, it looks like just another drive on my network, Store my music there then just stream to TF over network no TF storage needed,.
Hi, I want to be able to easily and quickly transfer files from my computer to the tablet. Preferably, wirelessly, and controlled from my computer. I hope we can discuss various solutions in this thread.
Here are the suggestions I and the other participants in this thread have come up with:
SD card: Possibly very fast, but I would need to plug/unplug the card every time, and maybe move files internally
FTP server on tablet: I have tried two FTP servers, both are very slow and stops after a few files.
Samba client on tablet: Should work OK, but I would then have to control it from the tablet
Samba server on tablet: Would be the perfect solution, but as far as I could find out, I need root (which is not yet possible on my B80)
USB connection: Fast and easy, but requires me to unplug the proprietary mad cable from the charger and into the tablet
DLNA: Buil-in support in both Transformer and Windows, but only supports streaming.
Dropbox: Simple and easy, but with space limitations.
SSH/SCP: QuickSSHd
WebDAV: ServersMan
What is your best solution?
Without root you don't have anymore options it seems to me.
Edit.....Thanks CaNsA......Dropbox, but its slow
You have exhausted all available options bar one......
Dropbox
And if its not good enough then create an app that will do what you want.
/end of thread.

Thanks for the tip, I just thought of another one that might have great potential: DLNA. Will explore later.

Seriously?
Wifi File explorer here in free version, won't allow uploading files to Android, only downloading to the computer, but does a fine job once it's the paid one.
What FTP servers did you try? I admittedly used it ONLY on the Galaxy tab, but FTPServer worked very well for me. At least using Cyberduck as a client on the computer. For example, doing the opposite accessing an ftp server hosted on a computer, AndFTP gave me horribly low speeds. Free version anyway.
More options? Sure. SSH. I use QuickSSHd and again, still not tested on the TF.
Still not finished here, WebDAV in the form of something like ServersMan. Never really used it to be honest. But hey, still an idea right?
Also, give up on DLNA, at least partially. Depending on the client you might be able to only stream multimedia files instead of saving them. Keep in mind that there isn't any upload to a DLNA server, so you'd need a server on the computer (possibly a good one, not WMP) and control everything from the TF. "Everything" meaning pictures, music and videos shared by your server. Upside is that you can just stream stuff without using up space if that is fine with you... like watching a movie for example from bed. And you can get better results if using something that transcodes the files, I found to work very well Plex that however requires the paid app to connect to the Plex media server on your computer, might not be the best thing for you. Useless anyway if you need files that aren't multimedia. (notice so far no subtitles with Plex for Android, my only and actually huge, complaint)
On the TF side you could access the SMB shares on your network with ES File Explorer that works very well. But it's all done from the TF.
Now you have more options
Great post, I will update the first post and try the various solutions. I briefly tested DLNA, and reached the same conclusion. It's a shame, I suppose it wouldn't take much development effort to make file transferring possible when the auto discovery and data streaming implementation is done. Still, I guess that's not the purpose of DLNA.
I tested FTP Server and SwiFTP, both hung while transferring from Windows or WinSCP.
Also, I read that Dropbox supports direct transfer when the two clients are on the same network, great. However, I want to be able to transfer videos without caring about my Dropbox limit...
I use ES File Manager and transfer from my tablet, so far it's the best method.
I just use Samba on my TF and access it from my desktop
Install https://market.android.com/details?i....softdatacable to your transformer
Find a good ftp client on your computer (I use filezilla, there a setting for concurrent transfer, set it to max)
Run software data cable, open ftp client, enter ip and port and copy away
thebadfrog: I suppose you have rooted, then? Samba would be my preferred solution, but unfortunately, I can't root mine yet...
I have had good luck with File Expert. It is free and supports transferring using a web interface and ftp. I have mostly used the web interface which always has worked great.

Actually, DropBox is great, but means you have to manually sync files you want.
DropSync solves that problem and makes Dropbox on the tablet work just like Dropbox on your PC/Mac with background syncing. I've been using it for 2 weeks now with no issues and virtually no battery impacts. If you pay you can configure the sync frequency. I have mine at 10 minutes, but a simple options click can force a sync if you really need it. You then have all your dropbox files on the TF.
I would say MyPhoneExplorer is what you need. You can copy or install from PC and it does much more.
I mostly use adb (adbwireless) to push files to the transformer. It seems to work fastest. There is a fuse file system available, so if you are using linux on the desktop you can even mount it. Very convenient!
Get ES File Explorer, go to LAN and point it to your computer's internal IP (requires it to be static)
Then you have access to all shared folders on your computer. Of course, this only works when you're connected to the same network, but I assumed that'd be the case anyway.

They had it free on the Amazon market so I tried it. Worked quite well, I bought it (on the Android Market, I dont like how you need the amazon market installed and how slow it is with updates).
ES file explorer with the PC added as a server sharing the appropriate folders over network works pretty well for me!
+1 for ES File Explorer
Bluetooth
Today for the first time I used Bluetooth to send some e-books from my laptop to tablet. Not the fastest way , but convenient for smaller files, as it works without having to install or run seperate apps.
Great sugestions from all, much appreciated
Cheers,
Richard
ES File Explorer is great for what it does but it is not what the OP is looking for(Read the title)
+1 for My Phone Explorer, can transfer/delete/move files to sd,microsd, and internal hard drive.
Hi Everyone,
I am just wanting to open up this idea for debate and see how many people like the way they are forced to manage their music and movies etc at the moment. (being manage from the computer and select what songs/playlists etc you push to your mobile device instead of pick what you pull to it using your mobile device.
Do you like sitting at your computer to pull stuff to your phone/table or would you like to be able to do it from your phone/tablet using your Wifi?

I have a wireless hard drive connected to my router, my media is available instantly on my phone as both server and phone are dlna compliant so I don't have that problem but before I had the hard drive I had no problem connecting any android device wirelessly to my laptop and sharing files.
If your android device and a computer are both wireless and on same wifi network you shouldn't need to sit on your computer to retreive files as long as its a windows pc and is on you can use es file explorer on android market to browse pc and copy or play its shareable files.

That what I was thinking too. I was thinking it would be great to have an app where if your in Wifi range of your computer it shows all media files available and can stream them you can copy/sync them to your device while on the same Wifi. Then when your out of range of the Wifi only the stuff that you have synced shows locally on your device.
That way you won't even have to go the computer to pick up anything. No interface installed on your computer for this specific syncing and it could even pick up from Windows media center or itunes. But I don't know if it's possible. would be nice though.
(I am shamelessly trying to get devs to read my idea as I am not sure who to approach for this as it would be a big task if possible)

I'm not sure if anyone read that you can do this already but here's how. You need to install es file explorer and then to access your files from pc on android...
1. In es file explorer go to the lan tab and click its search button. Your pc will show up
2. Click on your pcs ip address to see everything on it and transfer files from or to it. If you protect pc with password you need your windows user name and password.
It's that easy

Hello,
I can't access my wd tv live on LAN. I try many programs (bsplayer, es file explorer, andsmb, WDTVMedia and etc). I can access from windows XP laptop and iphone, but i can't access form Asus TF700. Many time i see on LAN but usually can't access.ANDSmb get username/password wrong error. I changed username and password but also not succesful.
Thanks (sorry for my english)
I access my WDTV Live PLUS with file managers (ES File Explorer and File Manager from Rhythm Software) and BSPlayer in LAN mode.
I don't know if the Live has the same menu as the Live Plus but I have attached a shot of the TV screen in the Settings-Network Setup menu. Maybe it will help you.
I don't use any passwords for it on my system. Don't feel the need for them on my system here.
Works great for me. I don't think the WD Live or the Plus do SMB just Network Shares.
Thanks

If by "Network Shares" you mean Windows (compatible) network shares, you are actually talking about SMB. SMB is the Windows network share protocol, also known as CIFS...
Still not work
