Hi, noob here. Is there a way to network the tablet to your home pc and vise versa like a laptop can? I tried the remote whatever thing the Tablet comes with and its accessing my disk drives on my desktop.

not sure about accessing your tablet wirelessly from your PC tho ....
I use ES File Explorer. As long as you have a properly shared location on your network you'll be able to get access to it from the Transformer.
If you want to access your Transformer from a computer use Websharing. I like it, it has a built it photo viewer and music player in the pro version. There are a couple of other alternatives too.

I am just wanting to open up this idea for debate and see how many people like the way they are forced to manage their music and movies etc at the moment. (being manage from the computer and select what songs/playlists etc you push to your mobile device instead of pick what you pull to it using your mobile device.
Do you like sitting at your computer to pull stuff to your phone/table or would you like to be able to do it from your phone/tablet using your Wifi?

I have a wireless hard drive connected to my router, my media is available instantly on my phone as both server and phone are dlna compliant so I don't have that problem but before I had the hard drive I had no problem connecting any android device wirelessly to my laptop and sharing files.
If your android device and a computer are both wireless and on same wifi network you shouldn't need to sit on your computer to retreive files as long as its a windows pc and is on you can use es file explorer on android market to browse pc and copy or play its shareable files.

That what I was thinking too. I was thinking it would be great to have an app where if your in Wifi range of your computer it shows all media files available and can stream them you can copy/sync them to your device while on the same Wifi. Then when your out of range of the Wifi only the stuff that you have synced shows locally on your device.
That way you won't even have to go the computer to pick up anything. No interface installed on your computer for this specific syncing and it could even pick up from Windows media center or itunes. But I don't know if it's possible. would be nice though.
(I am shamelessly trying to get devs to read my idea as I am not sure who to approach for this as it would be a big task if possible)

As I said if you have a windows computer connected wirelessly you can use es explorer to browse its shared files.

I'm not sure if anyone read that you can do this already but here's how. You need to install es file explorer and then to access your files from pc on android...
1. In es file explorer go to the lan tab and click its search button. Your pc will show up
2. Click on your pcs ip address to see everything on it and transfer files from or to it. If you protect pc with password you need your windows user name and password.
It's that easy

Hi, have been trying to share content on a Seagate freeagent external drive and access it with es on my transformer, so far no luck. I should mention that I have the drive plugged into a pogoplug device that works just fine withe the app provided but doesn't allow you to copy folders back and forth. So I figured try out es, can anyone tell me how to configure es to see the drive? Or even if its possible. Many thanks for Any help submitted. I did give es the IP of the drive/pogoplug but no luck.

I have my seagate plugged into the USB of my Asus router..
I had to go into the control panel of the router and set permissions for access to the drive..
Then transfer this log in name and password into Es explorer, plus of course the i.p..

what i can suggest is you connect your drive to your pc and share it then use ES, go to lan and connect to your pc and then you should be able to see your shared drive.
if you are on a mac i cant tell you how to share it,
so if you using a windows machine,
you can go to my computer -> right click on the external drive and select the sharing.
next you just have to find out what your private ip is.
you can do this by pressing the windows key + "r"
a window will pop up, type "cmd" then click "ok"
a black window pops up then you type "ipconfig"
a bunch of adaptors will show up just look for the words
IPv4 address...: 192.168.1.200 (it'll be in the format xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa)
once you got that you can use ES to go explore the share drive
click on the Lan tab, if it's not showing go to setting to enable it.
click new ->server ( you can try scan but sometimes doesnt work)
under server type in the ip address of your pc the one you just found.
fill in the user name and password of your pc. then you are good to go.
you should then be able to see all your shared folders on your pc including the shared external drive.
Or you can just get a NAS and that would make data sharing within your home network so much easier.

If I drag over and drop a folder onto the tablet, only the folder and any folders inside the folder will transfer. Nothing inside the folders will move, so it just stalls out.
I've also installed Kies, and get the same results. I'm clueless at this point. What should I look for now?
Calibre won't upload books either and gives no errors.

Can you give us a few more details....... What is your computers OS, what model tablet do you have 8013?, 4.0.4 or 4.1.2, What kind of files (avi, apk, mp3, mp4, doc, text)
Hard to help without complete details.

Files: epub, mobi, .jpg, .opf etc.
Nothing will transfer. Nothing from Calibre, Kies or drag and drop. Yet all those applications successfully connect to the device.
I can make new folders on the tablet but that's it.
Calibre just popped up an error that says it can't communicate with the device. Which seems odd, as it shows connected status.

In Calibre does the note 10.1 show up on the top icon bar as a black icon labeled "device"
If so right click on it and then click on "configure this device" you will need to tell calibre what kind of files you want to transfer to the tablet like pdf, epub, mobi. Then you need to choose what folders you want to transfer your book files to on your tablet.
If you can not see the black tablet labeled device make sure that your usb is set to "connect as a media device (mtp)" and not set to "camera (ptp)"
Oh..... can you see the tablet in Windows explorer.... it should be the last item in Computer, it will be after all or your hard drives and cd drives. It should be listed as "GT-N8013"
Let me know what you see so we can continue.

Black icon, check!
Right click to configure, fail.
It gives an error because it's running a job. The job runs infinitely because it's trying to get the list of books on the device but it can't see it, apparently. Yet as I said before, it does connect to it =\

Are you rooted?
have you tried to transfer file with a free app called AirDroid in playstore. I like it better than Kies

Not rooted yet. I just got the Note yesterday and I want to get a feel for stock first.

What book reader are you using and why can't you put books on you Note from dropbox?
Your drag and drop issue is on your windows7 computer correct? In the past I had drag and drop issues with some apps on my win7 computer and I had to do a reinstall of the OS to fix my issue.

Today I plugged it into another computer, it recognized right away. Open it, drag and drop a file boom, it copies.
Go back to my machine toss Ubuntu on for dual boot. It recognizes it no problem. Open it, drag n drop a file, no go.
Seems like some kind of hardware issue.

If you have a home WIFI system, you might consider installing a file manager like ES File Explorer that supports SMB. You don't have to be rooted to do it and once you input your home network settings you can transfer files wirelessly. It's much more reliable than Samsung's Kies software.

I use DropBox and ES File Explorer but that doesn't solve my issue of needing direct access via USB cable.
And besides that, broke things need fixed
Why do you use Kies?
Opens up on my PC like 2 removable discs... Tablet and card. Drag and drop files I want to copy...
Solved the problem. Bought a Mac, installed Android File Transfer, awesome ensued. PC is now a curb ornament.

Dont want to turn on a mac vs windows war here but whats the deal ????.. you dont need any software to connect to windows
Obviously USB mass storage does not work in mac or windows..
(I use both and each has there own advantages )
Edit : did not read the full thread.. Guess its just a driver issue... I can say -" windows suck with drivers " . Love mac for that

There is some major bull****tery with Windows, my hardware and my GN 10.1
It connects, pops up as a drive and file transfers work on two other Win7 boxes. I did everything imaginable to get it to transfer on my ex main pc. It would show up as a drive, I could click it and see all the files but when trying to transfer files, it was a no go. It would try. A window would pop up and the progress bar would show but then stop and not transfer anything.

stupid question, I know But I still have no good method to copy data between N5 and PC (Win8). If N5 is connected to PC I see it as a device. This method does often not work properly. I have had many problems: I copy data to the phone but the explorer on the phone does not see that data. Some of you said this is a problem of buggy MTP. When I try to copy hundreds of files from N5 to PC it not even start copying. Are these problems normal?!
And a question besides: the PC does not recognize my N5 as a USB3 device. Should it?
I can copy data in Recover via adb, but this is really unhandy.
Which method are you using withoput any problems?
Either one of the following work on WiFi...
1. Use an FTP server and transfer from phone to PC.
2. Use AirDroid on the Play Store, it works wonders.

Oh aaahhh FTP is a great idea. And there is also a FTP server on my NAS haha.
Anyway, thanks for your answer. But it's a shame that copying from/to N5 is so tricky. An external SD card was sooooo easy

Definitely agreed with you there. Its the price we pay for faster access to our content and being on a developer device with the cloud in mind.
I don't have any issues. Just turn usb debugging off I've found if it doesn't recognize the phone properly
WiFi works easily enough. Once you've set the proper share permissions, any network enabled file explorer such as ES File Explorer will be able to copy files back and forth. This has the advantage of being able to initiate everything from the phone itself.

FTP is not usable. I tried andFTP. I have about 10k files to transfer to my new phone. It's faster to write every bit on my new phone by hand :/

If you're transferring a folder full of files you could always use adb push to send the files to your device.
Honestly though I haven't had any issues just copying files over using MTP with the odd exception of Titanium Backup files.
Fast File Transfer works by turning your phone to a WiFi router and web server to share a file. Another option is to use ES File Explorer and transfer over CIFS(SMB or Windows file sharing).

One more option:
Use a flash drive and short cable. If rooted, stickmount will make the nexus 5 see and use a flash drive attached to the USB connection with a short cable. If not rooted another app exists that similarly makes a flash drive visible.
