Rooted but now what? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey guys
I am fairly new to the whole Android thing and would perhaps like a little advise. My new Motorola Atrix is rooted now and there is a little icon on the menu titled superuser but now what? What can I do and what should I do?
Sorry to ask questions which may been random but I just wanted the experts to point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Scott

And now you are going to get addicted to flashing ROM's, themes, widgets etc.
But first you need to read, alot, about your phone and what can be done to it via flashing.
I am not familiar with your phone, but plan on doing alot of searching and reading.
In the end you will be happyily addiccted.

That's brilliant thanks for the reply, I am normally into iPhones etc however my network gave me a free upgrade handset without making me resign a contract and I was interested to see what I can do etc

For showcase users [please read]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you haven't noticed me and lmartin92 (AWESOME GUY) are the ONLY SHOWCASE users that has added anything to the community.. Hopefully that is about to change soon, we have a couple new guys that really sound promising, but I'm sure there's many of you that could contribute some Valuable help....
I don't think it's right depending on the Mesmerize Devs and Fascinate Devs do everything for us so I'm trying to learn what I can... And only a few months ago I'd never touched an Android device. Until about 3 weeks ago I'd never touched linux. All this is VERY new to me, but if you're willing to learn and have any knowledge with a computer, which if you've flashed anything you more than likely do, and can simply FOLLOW instructions.. Then there's plenty of people including myself that are willing to teach you what they know...
Bdemartino, has written an awesome theming guide Found HERE... He has the tools listed that you need just make sure to follow his instructions word for word... For showcase users (make sure to use the latest Showcase Pick n pack to pull the framework-res and twframework-res for your themes) Theming is trial and error.. You're more than likely not going to get it right the first try... I have some additional files with the xml edits.. Just PM me if you're interested
Phidelt82 has written up a guide for setting up a DEV box located HERE.. This may be advanced for some, but you can always walk through it and see Linux and play around with some stuff and try to learn some commands..
I'm just learning mods, but again I can teach you what I've learned...
And for all the Showcase users that don't think they can develop or don't have time, then the least you could do to support this forum is offer the Newer guys courteous answers when they ask.. I know that the same questions can get old, but let's not forget that we were all new at one point.. Some people may have no forum experience what so ever... So let's help them out, and if you don't want to do that then simply don't respond and let someone else answer them...
The last thing we want to do is scare away new Users from XDA, you never know what they may bring to the table down the road!!!!
And for the new people...
Please Read the entire posts first before doing anything, if you run into a problem try reading through the thread to see if anyone else has the same issue..
If you can't find your answer then the best place to get an answer is the irc
http://webchat.freenode.net/ channel= #samsung-mesmerize
and you can always post a question in the threads as well....

Ew. First step: Drop the 1993 clichés.
I am a little new to this but succesfuly rooted my last showcase and had 2.2.1 with pick n pack .3 and voodoo kernal and it worked great other than I couldn't silence phone calls with the volume rocker. Anyone else have this issue? Then I flashed superfrankenclean Tom with comavault kernal and I had a lot of verizon stuff on it like location services powered by vzw and also 3g mobile hotspot vzw wasn't worried to much about it till this morning my service dropped to nothing then I dialed *228 which I know now was big no no and then my phone went into roaming and couldn't get any service at all so took it to csouth got a new one which probably will be charged for and then tried to do step by step instructions for froyo and links were gone and instructions so I tried to root with z4 which I did then couldn't get red recovery screen to work when I flashed update.zip kept getting no signature or something so anyway I was able to redo my steps on the froyo build from Odin as I had somehow remembered and now I got everything going on pnp.3 and using voodoo but I really miss voodoo control sound is this still not available for it? I would like to go back to superclean with comavault but would like some advice and feedback from more experienced users I posted this in another thread but figured this was best thread for it and I really wish we had our own thread because I read on this site for days back 2 weeks ago and had massive migraines from trying to figure out what would work for showcase and what wouldn't and some things like rom manager you use the fascinate for something then for other things on this site you use the mesmerize so any help with what is most stable and what to run would be appreciated only thing I can tell not working with pnp.3 now is can't silence phone calls still but I really like the superclean and would go back to it if someone posted about what's happening to cause the radio signal issue

The best advice I can give you is learn to listen (read) and follow the discussions and advice these forums provide. Only flash ROMs, kernels, etc. that are either designed for the Showcase or are known to be compatible with it. Period. If you don't pay attention, and just go off flashing this and that and whatever, you're asking for trouble. There's no need to get a headache over all the stuff that's out there that isn't for the Showcase. Only concern yourself with what is either for, or is compatible with, the Showcase. Everything else isn't relevant.
And if after actually reading the original post and the thread and you still aren't sure if its a-ok for the Showcase, just ask. But read first. Don't be that guy who asks, when the original post clearly states it is or isn't Showcase compatible in the second or third sentence. Know what I mean?
As for the superclean ROM. I'm running it and the comavolt kernel and have had absolutely zero issues.
I've had two other people tell me they lost their signal all together with superclean to and they tried to go back to pnp and they still had no signal. Only way they got it back was to use odin. Guess ill try it out again as I really liked it. Under settings and mobile network which one of the boxes do you have checked? Home automatic a or b?

you flashed a CM7 kernel on a Touchwiz rom....
what did you expect to happen?
first of all, turn off the phone
secondly, go READ what the F you are doing. getting into recovery is basic knowledge and involves 3 fingers..... you need to figure out how to do the rest.

Wow rom manager i guess is dangerous
If people have an issue, and dont know how to get in to recovery. And your very brave flashing anything with out knowing how to get into recovery. Also cm7 kernel is for cm7. Be more careful in the futre or you will be bricked. You lucky this time. Also you may need to odin the stock tar at this point. But flashing a rom again after a data/cache wipe is worth a try. Also you should not nor should anyone be flashing anything. With out throughly reading and understanding what your about to do. It is also adviseable to have knowledge of the basics.

and OP. glad you got it working read into some more tutorials before you try again.
. Need to just read and understand what your doing before you attempt these things. Is it reallt that difficult to do a little research. Before possibly breaking your phone. And anyone will tell you that same thing. Because thats how we all learned read before hand. Lots of people are willing to help but not if your just going to be to lazy to research
I asked on two separate threads and no one answered me. I go on XDA and other forums over 5 times a day. I dont do coding or development for a living.. just wanted better battery life out of my phone. People are jumping to conclusions that I didn't do research. I did, I asked questions, got fed up & thought, let me just try this.

he learned from his mistake. look at that. he wont do it again.
he would of still learned without you chomping on his a**.
and as much as you say its not a support site. its a site for flashing, with flashing people are always going to run into problems, and always gonna need help. so no, it isnt a support site. but yes, it is a site where friendly people can help someone who's having a problem. instead of calling someone out for their mistake, why not help them fix it then direct them to tools so that they dont make the mistake again, we're all human. so maybe he just got his phone and was excited to flash? or was fustrated with his battery life, as he said in a previous post. and he looked up instructions and didnt understand. but this site not being "a support site", he couldnt get help, so he took it into his own hands. i would of done the same thing. just because you know how to do something doesnt mean you get to cuss someone else out for not knowing how.

Greetings and such...

Greetings everyone!
I've been doing massive 'net research on rooting my MT4G, and the one site that kept popping up was this one. So, I read the 'what to do..' thread and will discover my chipset and such later (my place of employment is (barely) on a 2G network). I've had my phone for 13 mos now without too many problems, running Go Launcher as opposed to Sense, and the Go sms.
Looks like I have some reading to do here, and hopefully with 13 mos or so with this phone I'll be able to lend some advice back.
One thing that troubles me is that in the last few months, I've noticed an increase in the 'Recovered from an abnormal reset' messages. I haven't read everything yet, but if anyone can lend an idea on this one, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks,
Skeebs
Welcome. Thanks for doing research. I'm not sure what to tell you about the "recovered from abnormal restart" message. A factory reset might be what you need. Ideas anyone?
You're probably right on the factory reset. I've been pondering that one for a while, and have just been a little lazy about it. Then again I might hold off until I'm decided on whether to root or not, which won't take long either.
That's understandable. One thing you may want to do is root, and then use something like Titanium Backup to backup any important program data you have like gamesaves, settings, etc. Remember though that the more you restore, the better chance you have of causing the problem, or even a new one, all over again.
I like this guy. He doesn't ask stupid questions and uses the thanks button.
And take it from someone who did the HTC unlocking update to unlock your bootloader... PLEASE dont go that route.. if you choose to root, do it with the methods here, they are far too simple, something I realized only after i did the HTC official unlocking method. Use this site for everything you do to ur phone..

My wife and I both have the "bad" emmc. Both are rooted. Both are over a year old. Both work. Your chance of bricking early is statistically higher. But I wouldn't worry about it. I've rooted 3 MT4G's using gfree. None have had issues.

I have the bad one as well, Ive flashed at least 10 roms in the last couple weeks...but ive always been a risk taker...also, there are others that are more knowledgeable than i am, that believe the "bad chip" is overrated. I don't know either way..
Sent from my Black Ice'd Glacier using xda premium
I guess the good news is that I still carry the insurance. If something goes terribly wrong, I could always have the wife back the Camry over it....
Not to mention, if this chip was going to fail, I tend to think it would have already. I worked outside every day last year in an extremely brutal heatwave, streaming music, quick recharging in a hot black truck, etc. I've pushed this thing further than I thought it could go and it hasn't failed yet (save the battery, I had to replace it after the summer).
The rewards outway the risks, so I shall drive on. Thanks for your feedback!
I kinda have that excited tingly feeling that I had before I built my first pc back in the late 90's...

Hi there

Hey guys, figured I'd introduce myself as I recently picked up a Skyrocket. I love the phone so far and I'm going to try to make it a point to make some constructive posts, but in the meantime I guess I'll just give you a list of my smartphone history:
HTC Touch Pro (messed around with booting Android off of the SD slot, never got it fully functional)
T-Mobile G1 (didn't have it for very long as T-Mo service sucked in my area at the time)
Motorola Droid (holy quality control issues, Batman!)
LG Optimus V (had for about a year, installed a ton of roms on it)
Google Nexus S 4G (GREAT phone, never had a single issue, used SlimICS as my favorite ROM)
Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket (current phone and why I'm posting this here)

Part of why I have so few posts is because I know how to use the search button.
By the way, my current ROM is Sky ICS. Flashed it last night, it seems to be decently stable/fast. I'd like to find something that's completely TouchWiz-free, but I haven't had time to read up on it. If it doesn't exist I might just try to build it myself. Is this something that's possible (within reason)?
Welcome, I am fairly new myself.
I have found the people here in the Skyrocket forums are pretty incredible. They have much more patience than I!
I have found that as long as you can read and follow directions, you are pretty much good to go. (At least for me anyways)
Now you get to deal with a much bigger problem....which one of the many great ROMs to take for a spin! There are some really good ones here.
Thanks to all the devs!
I picked up my skyrocket a few months ago. I just flashed superlite 5.1 on Friday and have had no issues yet. XDA is a wealth of information. I love this place!
Sometimes it's more like information overload.
Many different ways to do something similar...it's hard for me to keep straight sometimes!

I was referring to the many different methods the devs use to flash the various roms. Some things work well with one, but not another. That's all!
Like I mentioned earlier...not many posts due to the fact that most of the information I need is already available in many different threads, asked multiple times.
A little patience goes a LONG ways. Thought the constant flashing roms is getting a little addicting!

I know this is a modding community so the majority of answers are just going to say root root root! But in all honesty, if you are brand new to Android, get used to stock for a bit before you jump into modification. Spend your time reading about your specific device while you play with it and if people are happy with their devices rooted and the process isn't too intensive for you, then give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input. I was trying to be sure if there was a step by step process on what to do.I am fairly new to android phones and want to learn the ins and outs. I'm searching for a new phone now and it seems like the ones I like need something to be done to them before I can use them. So I was trying to be sure of the process before I screwed something up. I like the suggestion of learning the phone 1st which will probably lead me to a name brand phone.I'm currently with boost mobile so my options are limited. Once again thanks for the info.
1. Root
*unlock bootloder* optional
2. remove bloatware
3. read about custom roms
4. go crazy modding
Enjoy stock for a while, Oh and heres a tip, On the process of rooting, You can easily brick your phone.
Meaning Of Brick - It will no longer boot up; You have to replace it.
Well, actually I'm just looking
I googled "Rooted phone, what next?" and got several helpful sites and threads. Most of which lead back to XDA. Although I had a fairly clear goal in mind; I wanted ICS.
