Hi there - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys, figured I'd introduce myself as I recently picked up a Skyrocket. I love the phone so far and I'm going to try to make it a point to make some constructive posts, but in the meantime I guess I'll just give you a list of my smartphone history:
HTC Touch Pro (messed around with booting Android off of the SD slot, never got it fully functional)
T-Mobile G1 (didn't have it for very long as T-Mo service sucked in my area at the time)
Motorola Droid (holy quality control issues, Batman!)
LG Optimus V (had for about a year, installed a ton of roms on it)
Google Nexus S 4G (GREAT phone, never had a single issue, used SlimICS as my favorite ROM)
Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket (current phone and why I'm posting this here)

Welcome and have fun we got a decent lot of usual posters a lot of new guys coming in now so post in the right place do your searches and you will be ok

Good choice for a device. Plenty of development. Lots of roms to choose from. And ics

Part of why I have so few posts is because I know how to use the search button.
By the way, my current ROM is Sky ICS. Flashed it last night, it seems to be decently stable/fast. I'd like to find something that's completely TouchWiz-free, but I haven't had time to read up on it. If it doesn't exist I might just try to build it myself. Is this something that's possible (within reason)?

Welcome, I am fairly new myself.
I have found the people here in the Skyrocket forums are pretty incredible. They have much more patience than I!
I have found that as long as you can read and follow directions, you are pretty much good to go. (At least for me anyways)
Now you get to deal with a much bigger problem....which one of the many great ROMs to take for a spin! There are some really good ones here.
Thanks to all the devs!

I picked up my skyrocket a few months ago. I just flashed superlite 5.1 on Friday and have had no issues yet. XDA is a wealth of information. I love this place!

Sometimes it's more like information overload.
Many different ways to do something similar...it's hard for me to keep straight sometimes!

welcome, and enjoy ur stay

Yeah, I totally get it.
I was referring to the many different methods the devs use to flash the various roms. Some things work well with one, but not another. That's all!
Like I mentioned earlier...not many posts due to the fact that most of the information I need is already available in many different threads, asked multiple times.
A little patience goes a LONG ways. Thought the constant flashing roms is getting a little addicting!

Hi Sofia welcome,
I'll assume you got it brand new and is running a stock ROM. I would say that there is something running in the background that is slowing you down some. I'd take a look at which/how many apps you have, and maybe delete the ones you don't use anymore. Do you know if you're running 2.1 or 2.2?
What you'll mostly find here at XDA are folks that love to mod, well love might not be a strong enough word, we're OBSESSED. So what you will most assuredly get from people is "Try sun-in-such's ROM, it's the best!"
If you're into that, this is the place to play. Have fun!

Hi everyone im running 2.1 it came like that out of the box. Since im a girl I like phones that is simple and easy to use. I've used iPhones and blackberrys but im happy with android cause I can customize my screen to pink color. I would love to do mods but it seems very complicated since im not used to android and not very technical minded

You're probably better off not doing any mods then. Sorry if that sounds mean, but unless you're tech savvy to some minimal degree and comfortable with the idea of voiding your warranty and possibly bricking your phone, you're probably better off just leaving it stock.

Not exactly, an hour or two spent reading threads over here is what you need.
Swyped from my Froyo-ed Captivate.
Welcome Sofia ! I also have a Rogers Captivate (have a Focus too) and running it on FIDO with few issues. Try upgrading to 2.2 using Keis. That in itself was no fun, but at least it will give you some idea of updating/modding the phone.

Please don't be fooled into thinking this stuff is really easy. There are already a bunch of threads from people who tried to use CM7 and messed up their phones. Flashing isn't that hard, but it is also pretty easy to screw up. Settle for upgrading to stock Froyo and then read, read, read.

It's not hard, but it's easy to botch it if you don't know what you're doing. If you're going to try your hand at flashing a custom rom, make sure you read about and understand the process enough to where you don't have to make guesses and assumptions. Also, jumping straight to cm7 is a terrible idea - flashing cm7 is a lot more involved than flashing any of the other roms found in the dev section, and if you don't know what you're doing you'll almost certainly end up with some sort of brick.
Read through the stickied threads. They contain a lot of useful information, which is why they're at the top of each subforum. Fill in the knowledge gaps by searching. There's more than enough information in the Captivate forum alone, let alone all of XDA, to teach you how to do everything from some simple modifications to building your own custom firmware.

G2x Wiki Page

Hello everyone,
Since I cannot assist in any other manner at the moment, as I don't get my device until Tuesday, I decided to start working on the G2x's wiki page (Which was non-existent)
I'm compiling as much as I can in the page, and you can find it here.
It may be an easy way for newcomers to easily find the information they need.

Looks great Dameon. Thank you for taking it upon yourself to do this. I for one, really appreciate the time and effort you are putting into it.

Gonna be dev'ing for the G2x? I used your roms quite a bit on the Epic 4G before I finally gave up hope on the device and jumped to this one. Good stuff.

Glad to hear! You'll like it...as much as I wanted to love the Epic 4G, it had too many problems. I have some GPS and random reboot issues with the G2x, but it's still 100% better than the E4G

Oh, and thanks for the WIKI...very useful.
Small update. Added some Mods to the Wiki page, so common mods are easy to find.
If anyone wants to help, feel free to do so, just follow the formatting.
Looks good. Thanks for compiling that information for the G2x community.
Dameon: Great idea starting that up! I see that this wiki is currently more geared towards modding the G2x. I started up a more general reference guide a couple days ago and was hoping you could add it to your "Guides/References" link. It is: http://heatware.net/cell-phones/lg-t-mobile-g2x-reference-guide/
I'll also go ahead and link to your wiki.
Thanks!

rom/kernel/theme list

Could someone put together a list of the roms kernels and themes for this phone and keep it updated? I wish I knew more about this stuff and I'd do it myself but I'm kinda new and getting confused... hence the reason for the request... Any takers?
Thanks for everyones hard work... you all rock!!!

All you need to do is look in both respective forums under infuse. One for themes and the other for android developement.

Yeah seriously. Just read so you can learn along the way too.
Thank you both for the replies. I don't want to give the wrong impression... I read the fourms often. Just saying a list would be great... would help people know what fourm to start with, myself included. When you come into the game late its really tough to figure out where to start... for instance, the lastest and greatset stable build. No big deal though, I'll figure it out soon enough. Thanks again for the replys!

I agree that more reading can definitely be done so that you have a better understanding of everything, but I also agree that the whole process of finding roms and kernels and themes is a pain.
I'm working on a website at android.jakaar.net which will encompass lists of roms and kernels for a large majority of Android phones. It's currently limited to the Samsung Captivate and Samsung Infuse, but go to
android.jakaar.net
I know it doesn't cover much right now, but I am working on it.
I hope it helps, and please forgive the fact that it's not the greatest site at the moment, it takes a lot of time to put all the info together.
let me know if you have a specific device you'd like me to add to my site. To do that, you can email me at [email protected] or go to android.jakaar.net/contact.html

noobie thanks and advice

Hi everyone I'm a newbie to modifying android phones. I totally loved my stock g2x,but... like everyone else i wanted it to be the best and greatest! i tried installing cm7's nightly build as well as another developers build of ICS. Thats when i started having issues and thought i may have soft bricked my phone. I tried x0xhellx0x's HellFireâ„¢ Sandwich v 1.6 p999 4.04 and followed the guide located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513387 to the letter. Not surprisingly it worked like a charm and my g2x is back up and better than before. I was amazed that it automatically downloaded and installed all the apps i had been using previously on the stock g2x. I now have the latest and greatest g2x i can and am thrilled. My advice to any newbie trying to update their rom for the first time is to search the forum extensively, read all they can before they try anything, and if a guide is provided FOLLOW IT!!!!!!!!! I thought the guide for the helfire rom was going to be a pain as it required extra steps but in all honesty it was the easiest since it worked from the reboot without any issues. I've yet to encounter an issue with it and have to give credit to all the developers of the rom it is awesome. I haven't posted any questions here because i found all my answers simply by searching for them. this site is great and truly jammed full of useful and helpful information for newbies if we just look for it(search). Please search ladies and gentleman it worked for me and got my phone working again after i messed it up trying to take a shortcut. please search and read before bricking you phone.
Wait there is this thing called "search"? First new person on the g2x that used that feature. You deserve a medal and I just recently started and its not as complicated as it seems.

yes it's an awesome "feature" with a nice easy to use and user friendly drop down box which can be found in all forums and threads! i agree it is pretty easy an uncomplicated "IF" you follow the directions/steps outlined. I though the scrubber step was possibly going to be a pain because it made the whole process take a few minutes longer. However it actually made things go much smoother and was less painful in the long run. Imagine actually writing over the data properly preparing the phone for a new rom successfully working... what a concept! All in all it was a perfect solution to a newbies dilemma of a phone that would only stick in a reboot loop after a failed attempt to update the rom after not following all the steps suggested beforehand. Yes us newbies are an impatient bunch LOL
Holy ****, are pigs flying!?
But seriously it's nice to know there are some people who do search and find what they need.

yes didn't you hear???? the FAA cleared porky's flight plan at 8AM this morning
You should try klathmon's tutorial on hoe to over clock and under clock. I just used it and it made my phone a lot better. It is a lit of reading ( blame him for that, he devotes his time to help people like me and you), but is worth it and shouldn't be too hard to follow. If I can do it so can you

Just a little update on why things seem slow in here

So, I have seen a few posts as of late with some frustrations of there being very little going on here in the Atrix2 forum.
I want to give those a little background right now, and I am not speaking for every dev in here either, and I am hoping that they will all jump in here and give their 2 cents as well, so that we can let everyone know what is up.
As I am sure many have seen all the hoopla over the ICS leaks. This is one reason why things are a little slow right now. I am pretty sure that I don't want to keep working on things that are for 2.3.6 when 4.04 is about to be released in next several weeks. I am just guessing, but I am sure that the other devs may be feeling some of the same thing right now.
I KNOW that once we get ICS in hand, that there will be so much going on in here, it will be hard to keep up.
I am already working on some new hacks for ICS, and working on the CM9 FULL fresh compile, so that once we have the ICS kernel on our phones this should in all theoretical ways, work. I am still working on the bootloader as well, there are 3 different things that I am currently trying out, to break into it.
I also know that I am really hitting the Moto servers pretty hard with my own scripts to try and find an AT&T ICS leak for us, to get a head start on some of these FUN things for us, but until we get at least that, there is not too much we can do.
Ok devs, jump in, I hope I am not the only one in here that is thinking like this... I just thought this might be a nice way to let everyone know what is up and what we might be attempting at the moment, just before the you know what hits the fan.
Very well spoken as usual Jim! I feel the same way, once ICS comes out my work on GB is done!
I've been playing with AOKP every chance I get trying to get a working port going, once we get these bugs out for SCV6 and I get v1.3 out for Lithium, AOKP will be my main focus until we get ICS. I just don't see a point in continuing work on something that will be obsolete very shortly.
Development isn't dead by along ways, we are just at a stand still
If you're not checking cheesecake, you're not contributing all you can !!

Agreed. I will speak for myself when saying that Knowing ics is only weeks away,i myself am not going to kill myself in the kitchen with new updates or roms that are going to be old news and outdated ,and virtually useless to you guys in a matter of weeks.
Everything is quiet for me because i myself consider this my "break time" before the countless hours i am about to spend whipping up new roms and tweaks and just tearing the ics rom apart and exploring the new posibilities i will have with it.
Think of this as the calm before the storm.
Or do what i did, once i got this phone i was a little unsatisfied seeing only one rom at the time (lfaber06's scv4). So instead of complaining and/or waiting i took it upon myself to learn how to do what devs do.
You can Either be apart of the problem, or be a part of the solution.
My two cents..

That's where I am. Though, it may be more of a learning curve for me (as likely it has for others) to get a handle on things with the limitations imposed via AT&T / Moto, I am eager and have been using my time to soak up as much info and knowledge from outside sources, as well as guys here on the forum to be -eventually- helpful.
I've said it before, and have no qualms seeming like I'm sounding like a broken record, but I envy the dev's, hackers, et al that have AND continue to inspire me to get to the place I'd like to be...
I look forward to what ICS will give you guys to work with, and what it will do for the A2 community here. You guys are all my heros! lol

I understand how difficult to mod this device since it locked by at&t,though it has nice spec.
I'm very grateful when a new rom coming out,and i will hit thanks as many as i can for you guys, but no need to rush to develop this device and you can take your time to rest or for family.
You guys are rocks!

I just wanted to say something as a regular flasher(That sounded bad but you guys know what i mean,. I have looked into the dev work and I'm just not into it. I basically do not have the time because of work and trying to raise my kids. I do understand there is a lot of hard work that goes into being a dev. I myself do not expect anything from you guys and I'm sure some people agree. The way i see it, if you all put out something for all of us, that is great but in no way, shape or form are you expected to. If things here are slow, so be it. If people want to cry about how slow it is here then they ought to start learning how to do things themselves. Anyway, we all appreciate the work that the devs do here and I don't want you to feel like you are under pressure to put anything out because your not. Keep up the good work.

That is not why I did this. I just wanted to give all of the devs a chance to give everyone a little update as to what is currently going on. I felt that as we are awaiting the ICS leak or official release, that we could just take a few min. to give everyone a little update in good faith. The fact that others have noticed a little slow down seemed the perfect chance to do something like this.
As you said, this write up really was not for the ones with issues, but more for the faithful that are here all the time and giving their support if nothing else. I really don't care if people want to whine and such. I am here to do what I feel is more fun for me, and my "curiosity" than anything else, and if that can help someone else, or give us some great finds, then awesome.

I understand that is not the reason why you wrote it. I knew that when i wrote my original post. I just wanted to let you all know that some of us are appreciative of your work, that's all. I don't feel the devs get enough credit sometimes.

I'm very grateful for all the dev's here and I think you guys are all doing such awesome work. You guys have also been a huge help to me as I have started tearing apart ROM's and such on my own. And let me tell ya....
IT'S TIME CONSUMING AND INFURIATING!!!!
Alter code, write code. Flash. Boot Loop. Restore. Find out what went wrong. Alter code, write code. Flash. Bootloop. Repeat. LOL.
Got major props for you guys and the patience and time you have put into devoloping for us all. For free. Thanks so much!
