After making some modifications the the Xoom boot animation and danmcq's 3D Blue Bumblebee boot animation, I decided to try my hand at creating a boot animation of my own. Thanks to a few posts on the forums (thanks no1_cdn and others), I found my inspiration. The resulting animation is akin to the title from the Transformers movie. A full changelog is included below along with a links to the previous revisions.

Rather than duplicate the instructions for installing the boot animation, I will refer to the instructions already provided by stuntdouble.
Note: These boot animation downloads bundle the bootanimation.zip file within the transformer_title.zip file. Remember to extract and install the bootanimation.zip file. DO NOT rename and install the transformer_title.zip file.

27th June 2011
Based on feedback received, I've modified and re-rendered the animation to introduce additional detail for the outbound explosion. Based on the popularity of the June 2nd revision, the same JPEG image quality reduction has been applied. I'm pleased with the improvement and feel this revision is just about perfect. The preview animation above does not reflect these changes.
2nd June 2011
I further reduced the quality of the JPEG images in an attempt to reduce some of the boot time stuttering reported by at least one user. I believe the primary cause of the stuttering is periods of high CPU usage and/or disk I/O at boot and not necessarily the animation itself. However, there may be some correlation between the stuttering and the rendering (image quality and size). I personally prefer the June 1st revision. I also updated the download links to properly identify each revision.
1st June 2011
I have made some enhancements to the animation and I am quite pleased with the results. However, I believe there is still room for improvement.
31st May 2011
Being my first attempt at a boot animation, it isn't without its flaws. It plays well during tests, but the animation stutters at boot during what I believe may be periods of high CPU usage or disk I/O. The current revision also seems a bit dark to me and the image quality suffers a bit due to 512 x 320 pixel images being stretched to fill 1280 x 800. Of course, I am probably my own worst critic.

Very very cool - thanks for sharing! Would say you're being too critical. Slightly dark and image could be sharper, but these are minor niggles given how awesome it looks. My only problem is the duration of the black screen after the animation finishes. Have you considered looping the animation?
as fisha said, looping would be nice. Also would be cool if you could add the lens flair like the movies and maybe even options with a fading in/out autobot/decepticon logo. i can provide you with super high res movie version logos.
Aside from that, love the concept and this is what i've really craved as a boot animation for the TF.
If you have an editable file you've found I'd love a copy. I couldnt find an editable file anywhere on the web so I'm working on making a few animations from scratch now. This one is a capture from the video trailer? Looks cool, but the 'transformers' text is totally uneditable unfortunately. You can put effects over the top though ofc.

I basically followed Alexander Alexandrov's Cinema 4D tutorial in creating the animation. I say basically because I skipped a couple of steps in my eagerness to get this little project done.
The editable files I have are basically the c4d project file and a couple of textures. Let me know if you are still interested.

Ah ok, no thanks then. I dont have that program unfortunately. Thought you might be using after effects too. Cheers anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. I made some enhancements to address those minor niggles and added some looping to the animation. In my testing, it loops twice during boot.

Definately the coolest boot animation, unfortunately, I still get quite a bit of stutter. Are the image files optimized as much as possible?

Is the stutter most noticeable at a few instances during boot or for the entire animation?
Does the animation play smoothly in non-boot scenarios?
Code:
adb shell bootanimation
Give this one a try and report back.
I further reduced the quality of the JPEG images, and noticed a slight difference in the stutter compared to the June 1st revision in the first post.

Update: The download has been moved to the first post as the June 2nd revision.
First let me say nicely done. There is a small glitch once the original animation is complete and loop starts over. Keep up the great work

Just downloaded the one from 2 posts above. Definitely looks brighter. Stutters at the same point everytime, but second (and third) loops run through smoothly, so its prob not the animation itself. All in all, looking pretty good!

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
We got a winner. Thanks and great job.
very nice, thanks!
Thank you for making this, I went with the June 1st version. As I have root I backed up the orignal bootanimation.zip which is located at /system/media and then overwrote it with yours. Smooth as silk on reboot.
Now just need a custom splash image, wondering if someone is working on this.

It seems someone has even taken the time to post a video to YouTube here.
Although i'm not using it (YET), just like to say awesome work . it looks very nice.

Alpha Release:
I have now taken it upon myself to create the Animated Boot Image and working on a Alpha bootanimation now see the progress below. I have switched the file hosting service to Megaupload as Rapidshare was limited to 10 downloads. Alpha release has been updated and is full screen now and the images are in the correct part1 and part0 folders.
Details:
Animated Flames Radiating Background mimicing a phoenix
Phoenix graphic smoothed edges to blend with animated background on center of the screen
Text bottom of screen displaying Loading...(I may animate it but I am affraid this might be animation overkill with the background I am planning on using.)
Color Scheme:
Text: Dark to meduim colors of Red, Yellow, Orange and white and possibly blue.
Graphic of Phoenix in Red, yellow and Orange for flame effect.
If anyone wants to jump on this please let me know I am attempting it myself but I don't really have the skill level to get the detail I want but I am a quick learner.
Installation Instructions:
1. Download the Phoenix Boot Animation.zip file
2. rename to update.zip (Remember Windows Typically Hides File extensions so if you rename it to update.zip and the extension is hidden you are actually making the file name update.zip.zip)
3. Place the update.zip on the root of your SDCARD
4. Flash with the recovery of your choice
5. Give feedback for ideas in this thread

0.1.2 : Alpha 1 Uploaded
- Added Text on top of image "Phoenix Boot"
- Added Text on bottom of image "LOADING"
- Added Mask Image of Phoenix on top of the Animated Background
- Issues : the image is now larger however I still am not getting full screen coverage (What pixel size do I have to make the images to get the full screen covered?)
06/08/10 11:19pm PST
0.1.1 : Alpha 1 Uploaded (Remember to backup your old bootanimation)
Current Issues - Boot animation is smaller that I want I want full screen but all the image sizes I have tried thus far have not been full screen. This will give you a rough Idea of the background and loading I have thus far though.
06/08/10 10:45am PST
0.1.1 : Alpha 1 (Expect it around 7p.m. PST tonight) - This is just the animated background for the concept. But I would like feedback to fine tune it while I am editting the images for the Bootanimation.
06/07/10 8:15pm PST
0.1.0 : Pre-Alpha - Concept background and images in development - I will have a alpha build for my testing tonight.
NOTE : YOUR ORIGINAL BOOTANIMATION WILL BE OVERWRITTEN WITH THIS UPDATE.ZIP so make sure you have a backup of it. It's in other bootanimation threads.
How the desc file works:
320 480 15
p 1 150 android
p 50000 1 last
First line contains 3 numbers width, height and fps
Second line (and any succesive lines) starts with the letter "p" (which comes from animation part) and contains 3 items:
-count: number of time this part is repeated
-pause: number of microseconds to pause after the last frame of the part
-path: the directory which contains the png files that compose the frame of this part

You should probably smooth out the transition from the last to the first in part1.
File is huge and that is after i extracted just the boot animation zip ... 18.29mb ..just asking if this is correct since most boot animation files are significantly smaller
@bobtentpeg
You know I didn't see a problem there. In my test my phone doesn't even get through a whole cycle to recycle back to the beginning. But I can work on the loop transition if that is what your referring to.
@ Chosen_on184
The animation images involves 121 PNG files so it tends to be large. The size will most likely go down if I reduce to 60-100 PNG files once I settle on the feedback.

Hey I checked out your files and you have part0 and part1 backwards. part1 is the one that repeats. so typically you build up your pictures in part0 then when it goes to part1 (the one that repeats) you would have a smaller number of pictures that give a (certain) effect by repeating...
now the number of the pictures depends on your rom (sort off) with 2.2, I don't get past 00075.png and with 2.1 I get as deep as 00135.png
you might want to keep this in mind so it will work good both (also you could just have the 2.1's repeat at 00100.png)
lastly, I think it might look good with some animated flames (see attachment) do what you want with them, its your vision.
keep up the good work!
could you get an animated .gif preview up?
@ogdobber
Thanks for the info. I will incorporate that into my next phase of development and look into the flames. I was so tired at 5am after being up 8 hours and working on learning new ways to expedite my work process that I put them in backwards. I will update it and reupload a newer version tonight. I am going to remove the legacy builds in the future and just maintain the changelog from now on.
@Zephyron
I will also put together a animated Gif. The speed in which the animation is displayed is also perplexing. Right now I have 1 frame per second but I think I may have to speed up the process by going to a frame every 2 seconds to show more movement in the animation.
@General
So my to do list tonight is:
- Correct the png files so they are in the correct folders of part1 and part0
- Work on image transitions so that when the image recycles it is seemless
- Work on reducing the over size by reducing the png's which in turn will speed up the animation of the image
- Work on incorporating the Flame effect discribed by ogdobber
Could someone breakdown what the varibles in the desc file are just for my better understanding.
Thanks all.. Keep the feedback coming I want to make this as polished as possible.

Quick Update:
I have just rendered a Eagle in 3dMax Studio and I am going to render it on fire tonight.. The process is long and tedious so I might not have it done tonight or even tomorrow.. But it should look damn sweet if I can get it done. Since I am using 3dmax studio it will be fully movable in anyway I want on flames.. Such as..
Wings flapping in a hover position .. On fire burning... ash falling from the tail.. Black background.. I can pretty much manipulate it anyway I want. maybe have a pile of ash and have it rise from the ashes to hover above... that would be sweet.. Anyway I am in learning 3d max so I will see just how far this will go. I can then export it to a movie and break it into frames in PNG format using my tools. I will leave the Last bootanimation up and just make this a supplimental bootanimation assuming the effect comes out the way I want.
So I made a cyan version of the Holiday Nexus boot animation and thought I'd share it here.
I uploaded both a bootanimation.zip to adb push to the system/media/ folder, and a update.zip (CyanHolidayBoot.zip) to flash through the recovery menu.
You can use the method you prefer.
Update: I made some other colors too.
The files named 'bootanimation.zip' should be adb pushed, and the 'ColorHolidayBoot.zip' files are flashable in the recovery menu.
Update 2: I've made a version ('ColorSmallBoot_480x256.zip') where the cross isn't scaled up and therefore are more crisp and clear but smaller.
The cross is about the size of the original Nexus One boot animation.
I just made zip-files that you can flash in the recovery menu. If you want the bootanimation.zip to push you can pull it out from the zip-file.
Also I made this all kinda quick and have only tried out the cyan version, so if there's something wrong with the files let me know.
Update 3: A new version that's rapidly flashing between cyan, yellow, green and yellow. Looks kinda sick and psychedelic haha
Update 4: Green Live Wallpaper and Boot Animation with a new look.
Full size picture comparison of the old look and new style and a full size .gif preview of the new style
Update 5: New Style boot animations and live wallpapers for all colors. (No live wallpaper for Flashing Colors version)
The live wallpapers was generated with the Custom Creater script.

The regular size versions will look a little blurry on the phone because the pictures will be stretched out 4x the size there.
Try the small version or the new style version if you think it's too blurry.

It should be just as "blurry" as that one.
It have the same resolution 256x256 that is stretched out to 480x480, so of course it isn't that crisp. It's not that much I can do about it.
I guess they made it that way because it would be too big if the pictures was 480x480.
Personally I don't think it looks "terrible"
I've attached one that is more crisp, but smaller. Now it's in its original size. Try and see, maybe you like that one better.
I've also added small versions of all colors on first page.

Yeah, I know. I think it's the same with the original version tho.
But the pictures are actually even a bit larger in the small version lol, so it could possibly lag even more.
Maybe if lowering the fps it wouldn't lag as much. But the animation itself would be slower then ofc. It's 30 fps now, maybe that's a little too fast for the phone to handle during the boot up.

So here's my bootanimation I created. I've never really done one before, nor do I have much 'photoshop' experience either, so go easy on me! I truly have mucho respect for those that excel and are efficient with these programs.
I had some strange issues creating a transparent background for the red and blue version, so they have a full screen black background. Also, by not having transparency, I can save in jpeg format which is *MUCH* smaller, and noticeably snappier. (UOT who has this converted it to png)

Well, I wish I were able to. When contacting the creator, I learned that the character was built, rigged, textured, lit and comped by a team of people. I doubt I could create anything nearly as good from scratch. Those that can have my sincere admiration.

Hmm, it runs almost perfect on mine. For a 'normal' boot cycle (after the rom has been loaded, and dalvik all set up), it runs for one complete cycle slower, then on the subsequent cycles it speeds up. It's 112 frames long, which is certainly within a normal range for a boot animation. Just turned my phone off/on and it ran through a good 4 cycles.
Now if I stop the core to push a file into the system partition, it gets chopped when I start core again, but that's different.
Nice one, fits perfect for flavoured ice dark cherry theme on Enoms rom

I like the green, too! Here's the first version I did that's in the original colors, and with a white background. **The white background does not cover the entire screen, there are black bars above and below**
And in a recovery flash file: OG-bootanimation.zip
I've changed the folder placement to /data/local/, as after reviewing AOSP, it looks like it checks there first anyway, so unless your bootanimation command has been altered. I'll update the Red version here shortly as well.

I can run a simple batch file to recolor it if you'd like. It takes literally less than a minute for me to recolor this. I can make a new one if you'd like. For example, I made a blue one with a diffused glow for effect:

You're right it is easy to do a simple hue change. However, where I ran into difficulties was in the black background. For some reason, I had trouble introducing strange artifacts that only showed on the phone, not in the individual images. Here's a highly compressed/downsized example put into a gif:
But when I put it on the phone, it looks like this:
Had similar problems with the red version. I think it has something to do with how I changed the background, as I never really had too many problems with the original version. But since you got me started on it, I'll try to get it finished
Nice Work! looks good fellow Tulsan!!
I really like this. Keep up the good work. Would be awesome to have the green version in a black background.

Thanks. The green is my personal fav, too..I think it shows his texture, and 3D like qualities better.
Ideally I'd rather have a transparent background, which I would think would show as black. But having him on a transparency like that would make it easier to do other things later. I just haven't learned my way around the image editing stuff very well...but I'm learning.
I've got a couple other sections of video I *think* I might be able to isolate with some work. Some of this stuff if pretty tedious though (for me anyway). That android guy I put in for an avatar earlier... I had to reconstruct the right 1/3 of his head as it was covered by something else on the screen. And as long as I spent on it, I'm still not near as good as what the original creators did.
i just pushed the green version with white bg, it woulda been fine but then now the top 1/3 and bottom 1/3 of screen is black and the mid part is white

Oops, my bad...I guess I didn't really explain that. Yes, that's the correct display. The area of video that the base work was lifted from was a 16:9 aspect ratio, and our phones are like a 9:15 aspect ratio the other way. As that was my initial piece, I was more concerned with getting the animation smooth sized right. But after seeing it on the phone, I actually kinda like it the way it is.
I'll update the op so that folks are aware ahead of time. Work is planned for the green guy for sure...
and when everything smooth out you should add strobe lights for the robot to dance to or music notes... something in the background.. idk.. lol
am I the only one having issues installing this bootani?
I tried with AmonRa (1.8.0.1) with error "no installation script" or something like this.
Then I copied the bootanimation.zip file directly into /data/local
both 2 methods didnt work for me...
help me please...

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you. What rom are you running? I know one of the desire ports is putting it in /system/customize/ or something similar..can't remember.
Try pushing the file to your /system/media/ folder and see if that works...
Ths is really cool!
Thank you!

I've been running the honeybread theme for apex on my droid x (which is the
best looking theme out there in my opinion) and decided to create this 3D
bootanimation to go along with it. It looks great on my device, very smooth (the
youtube video doesn't do it justice).
I cant post links yet but if you go to the video or just google danmcq spinning droid boot animation You'll find the download linkl

I created the animation using Boris RED (thanks to Natemz for sharing how he created his Spinning Droid X custom boot animation)

It should work fine, but this evening I'll look into the Xoom's resolution and I will render a version specific to the tablet. I don't have a Xoom personally, so if anyone wants to test it out give me a shout.
Thanks

I'm using this bootanimation, but this seems like a coin spinning and yours is different, I personally like more your style, although the Natemx is very good. Your bootanimation seems more virtual, and i like it.

I had thought about a bootanimation like yours 3D Blue Bumblebee but with the Android logo instead of the honeycomb logo.
The color i think that should be green, but it's your decision.

Small world, after my last post here went googling for more bee bootanimations and found yours, to upload at home...
Yours is smoother running than the one I have, but I like the black background and more resolution pics of "mine" better...
Finally got around to creating the 'green droid' version.

I have an Asus Transformer and not a Xoom, but perhaps this information can be of use. Starting with your 3D Blue Bumblebee animation, I was able to make the few minor tweaks listed below and have it display beautifully on my tablet.
Increased the frame rate from 15 fps to 30 fps
Cropped images from 480 x 854 to 480 x 428 (animation still centered on display)
Optimized PNG images with rOptiPng (roptipng -o7 **/*.png)
Changed all the blacks from #101010 to #000000 to hide the edges of the 480 x 428 images
I don't believe it wasn't entirely necessary to increase the frame rate or crop the images, but optimizing the images and changing the black level yielded improvements.
I think the increased frame rate results in a smoother looking animation on my tablet, but there is still a slightly noticeable speedup after all the images have been cached. I cropped the images to remove the unnecessary black space and then optimized the cropped images to reduce the file size. This too appears to smooth the rendering of the animation.
A version rendered specifically for tablets would be much appreciated. The copy of the Xoom bootanimation.zip I found in this thread is stretching 512 x 256 images to 1408 x 880 and I find the resolution of the stretched animation unappealing.
Very nice!
Thank you.

Unfortunately, I did not create the 3D Blue Bumblebee animation. That credit goes to danmcq (the OP). He mentioned that he used Boris RED to create the animation.
Dan,
I found your bootanimation on DroidLife; not realizing it linked back here to XDA.
I took the PNG's and threw them onto a canvas that is sized for the xoom (1280x800).
The result is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16326484#post16326484
I did it for my xoom and tested on my xoom...hence it is in the xoom forum!

Back in 2011, I had created this boot animation for the Dell Streak, a device with a 5" screen that was totally mismanaged by Dell and left to wither and die. Recently I chose to recreate it for the S4, because I like it on my device. However, I could not simply use the original file because the images were tailored for the 800x480 resolution of the Streak. So to update the boot animation for the S4 I extracted a new set of images from the video and used them to create the new animation.
As with the Streak version, file size proved to be an issue. On the Streak, the main problem was that a full resolution version of the boot animation would take up a great deal of system space, which on the Streak was at a premium. This is also why a .QMG file will not be made. From what I understand about creating the file, the images must be at full resolution. In the case of this boot animation, that means around 300MB in size once zipped up, and that's with each image saved at maximum .PNG compression. While the S4 has plenty of available space in its system partition, a full resolution version of the animation would likely cause severe lag until the S4 had fully booted, and we know just how much fun lag is. So, each image in the animation was reduced in size, and the animation relies on upscaling the images to fit the screen.
Just to make this clear, because I had people in the Dell Streak section actually ask about this, the wormhole never ends. If you have a bootloop you can have endless fun watching it until the battery dies.
To install, download from the links below, depending on what orientation you wish to have for the images. Using whatever method you're comfortable with, copy the boot animation to the appropriate location (usually /system/media), set its permissions to rw-r--r--, and reboot.

Uoah bye Samsung bootanimation. Really awesome mate :3
I tried to install it through twrp and it says installation failed

Naturally, for they aren't flashable through recovery. You need to do things manually here.
I tried with the guide to install in touchwiz and it didnt work on lollipop tw
Did they include QMG support in Lollipop? Fom what I've heard, QMG was to be removed.
thanks this really cute
Nice work mate !!! :good::good:
CM12
just pasted it in System/media and gave permissions rw-r--r-- using ES File explorer. reboot. voila awesome boot animation. and it works perfect on CM12 based ressurection remix rom. Works wondefully,
@ksrao_iete: Out of curiosity, did you use the portrait or the landscape version?
Portrait one..

Have you tried using jpg's for further compression? Also, maybe take a look at the Lollipop animation. This animation has the potential for a loop, with the ending sequence only occurring when the phone has booted up (rather than just looping the whole animation).
The problem with JPG is that it's a lossy format, and upscaling an image saved in a lossy format like JPG results in a crappy image. Even when the image was saved at full resolution in JPG it came out worse than the upscaled PNG images I'm using. So, added compression is not helpful. For the animation itself, I actually have it set in two parts. The first part plays through once, and the second part loops on an infinite basis. The GIFs in my first post do not adequately illustrate this, but take my word for it when I say it's pretty seamless.
