Modding a downloaded ROM - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Im new to the whole ROM thing for Android and has just flashed a few different ROM's to my Rooted Incredible S.
So my question is, if this is OK:
1) Download a custom ROM
2) Extract it to my PC
3) Remove e.g. "HtcTwitter.apk" or "HtcFacebook.apk" from \system\app\
4) Zip it back together and put it on my SD Card
5) Flash the ROM
Will that work?

I think you will have to resign the zip for you to be able to flash it... hopefully someone else can tell you how... kind of hard to research that on my phone

Bump to the top...

If you use ClockworkMOD Recovery (I don't know if AMON-RA can) you can turn off sig check.
SO this would work.

Thanks, il'l try that ;-)

I suppose that some ROMs are signed in the same manner as an .APK, but so far I haven't had any issues with opening a ROM zip file in 7-Zip and deleting what I don't want in there and dragging and dropping in what I do (apps, ringtones, etc.)

[Q] Stuck Two

hey i have rooted my captivate and gone tthrough all the steps to flash new rom but when i go to install rom it says installing but nothing happens how long does it take and is there something im missin using mac
More detailed steps please of what u did.
rooted phone then flash clockwork then back up and tryed to install just like its say the only thing i did different the pc user is recompressed files to zip because mac uncompresses them automaticly when u download them this is my first attemp at flashing rom its says installing but there is no progress on the stats bar
Do not re-compress them. find a way to get it onto the sd card without it.
have you gotten to the point where you select the file when you are in recovery?

That is your problem. If you recompress it, it will not work. I myself am on a mac, and although it decompresses it automatically, it should still have the original ZIP file in your downloads folder. You need to use that.
thanks for the great help i got it your number one for five mins only lol

Can't install CWM

Hey trying to install CWM on my SGS4g
I overwrote recovery with the one from the thread linked below. I even extracted all the files from update.zip to their proper locations on the filesystem to no avail. It still boots to the Samsung recovery. WTF?

Did you even read the OP?
Place in the root of your SD. If you have a update.zip there already, delete it, and replace it with this one.

Where in that quote does it say to extract the update zip and place it anywhere except the root of your sd card ?
You just place the zip file itself not extracted on your sd card and don't ever do anything with it, don't flash it don't extract it.

When you get to the 3e recovery you need to select re install packages to enter cwm. The other option is to Odin flash the latest Bali kernel.
i never knew that downloading and moving around 2 files could be so hard for so many people.
Click on the Bali + CWM link in my signature for the easy to follow Odin instructions.
I'll ignore the snarky comments and thank the poster for the hint to reinstall packages. I ran into the same problem and that final step wasn't obvious from the instructions in the thread, nor from use of ROM Manager.
youre not supposed to use rom manager on this phone. and trust me, when the issue on cwm/rom manager has been addressed as many times as it has, it doesnt count as a "snarky" comment.
anyway, you are better flashing bali than krylons cwm. you are going to flash bali/voodoo cwm anyway, so might as well make it easy and do it now. think of bali/voodoo cwm as an upgrade to krylons (even though krylon made all this possible)

[Q] HELP rooted Nexus S w/ Cyanogen mod 9

I rooted my phone (nexus s i9020a at&t) and have superuser and downloaded rom manager. I had no idea how to figure out how to flash a rom onto my device on my mac so I downloaded one of the many cyanogen mod 9's directly in rom manager. The rom loaded up perfectly and runs smoothly except there is no app market. When I try to go back into rom manager it force quits out.
I am very new to rooting and hacking into my phone and tried searching for hours and can't figure out what to do. If anyone knows how I can just flash a new updated version of cyanogen mod 9 without using rom manager that would be awesome. I really just need a step by step way to do it on the mac because every time someone posts a rom .zip file it downloads as a folder with random stuff in it and in recovery mode in my phone I don't know how to go about flashing it. So confused. Any help would be so appreciated.

Check your PM. I couldn't post links as it would have been my first post.
cm9 issue
thanks did you get my replies to your pm? i can't figure this out haha
download cm9 and the gapps add-on(with your phone) in the first post of the cm9 thread. boot into recovery, fimd your rom and gapps files, flash cm9 there, then flash the gapps(google apps), then reboot. you do not need rom manager.
Hmm cm9 does not come pre loaded with android app market so u will have to download the latest gapps from other posts in this forum... then copy it into ur phone from ur computer...then after going to cwm recovery use the volume up down buttons to scroll and the power button to choose...u will have to remember where u pasted the gapps file and u will have to navigate to it ...choose the gapps file and scroll down to yes to flash it then go back and reboot...that's it u will now have google apps in ur nexus s...Remember u do not need to open the downloaded gapps zip file as there is nothing u can do by opening it...good luck and happy flashing...

okay so i downloaded the g apps file and its a folder on my desktop with a few other folders within with random files. i go to recovery on my phone mount my phone drag this folder to my mounted phone. then i go back and do i do instal zip from sdcard? or do i do apply update from sd card? this is where I'm stuck idk where to go from here. if i click install zip from sdcard it makes me navigate and i find the name of the folder but it just brings me to the smaller folders and little individual files it's not just one big file but a bunch of little ones so i can't choose the whole thing.
so im confused
edit: so i guess on my mac when i download the zip file it must unzip it during download and becomes a folder. so i tried compressing the folder back into zip format and go back into recovery and load it but it says installation aborted.

First of NEVER unzip a rom file if you plan to flash it, because that breaks the signature. You need to go and download it again, and this time leave it zipped.
YOU MUST BE ROOTED!
You will flash it with something called ROM manager. For the atrix2 you will need to go to the development section and get the Atrix2 bootstrap from Here.
You might want to do a little googling about flashing android ROMs to get a little better idea about it. Also NEVER install a ROM for the Atrix2 that you did not get from the Atrix2 development section on here.
There is no linux knowledge needed to flash ROMs.

You have to make sure you turn signature checking off in the advanced menu to make that happen though. I have been down that path too many times, and forgot that.

LOL... I just have ROM kitchen do it, if you do the interactive it will ask at the very end if you want to sign your rom... It defaults to yes, so technically it takes longer to type n then return.... LOL...
I have my way that I call the ROM kitchen that does it all without asking me anything, and it zipaligns, deodexes, converts the update/updater-script (let's me make any edits), then creates the ROM, and signs it. I just scripted it all. I also have another one that creates the workspace and converts any image files/fxzs for me and turns them into working folders.
thanks

I know that. I moved the backup on the computer and when I put it on my sd so I could restore it. It didn't work it says no file found do you know where I can download the Original Stock Rom and when i try starting it up it go's to a black screen with a green arrow pointing towards the found then it goes to the phone with a red triangle with a red exclamation point. What is that?
If your backup is not recognised you have put it in the wrong folder i think. So tell us, where the files are on your sd card.

+1 on that, if you have one it'll be recognized as long as it is in the right folder, and made with the same recovery.

So i put the backup in the CWM folder but it tells me no file found so what do I do? Can I go to some website to download the original stock Rom and kernel I need to fix my phone asap so can you please tell me exactly what I need to do. Plus what are those symbols i describe in my last reply. Thanks so much for assisting me I appreciate it.
The files must be in folder: clockworkmod/backup/2013-04-01.18.46.58
The last folder is the date it was created.
The symbols mean, your flash has failed.
What if that doesn't work

If your backup don't work, i know there is a Stock cricket jb back here in One SV Forum. Others flashed this successfully.
Otherwise i'm running out of ideas.

Then using fastboot I go ahead and open up CWM? Will it work on any version of CWD? Thanks so much for getting that file for me and what do I do after its flashed? Like as from being to end what are the steps sorry for all the questions but thanks for everything.
Unzip it. Go into Clean JB Crkt 2.04.1050.3 folder and copy the clockworkmod to your external sd.
Then boot into cwm and choose restore and choose the backup.

Hey man I download that file but its not in zip its in Rar. so I just move the file on to my external sd out in the open not in a folder and I opened up my CWM from the install zip from sd card and that didn't work then I went to restore and it could find the file both times so how do I install it? Do I have to put it in a certain folder or something? It keeps saying no file found. Thanks
Don't copy the zip directly.
What you could do is make a backup, see where it is on your sd, replace it with the one from the zip and then restore that one.
So Noob17_Me, flash this rom from here.

Yea but what im trying to say is that the file I downloaded isn't in zip form. So how am I supposed to install it on CWM?
Sorry but what is so difficult to understand? The rar is not for flashing, its a cwm backup and if you unrar it you have a folder Clean JB Crkt 2.04.1050.3, inside you find a folder clockworkmod.
This clockworkmod folder you have to copy to SD, like it is and and boot into recovery and choose "restore".
And my zip is made from this backup, so it are the same files!
