Hi,
What are some of the differences for making a kernel compatible with cyanogenmod7 instead of stock aosp for the nexus s? How do you make a kernel compatible for cyanogenmod also in addition to stock?
Thanks!
This belongs in the Q&A part of the forum.

Wrong section, but definitely fascinating question for me. I've always been curious about this.
I believe it is the framework. CM has basically built their own framework, whereas most ROMs just build off the stock framework.
Moved to Q&A.
Yeah, thanks for moving it. Lol. But yeah, I'm not really sure haha.

I'm itching to flash my NS4G with ICS and I'm unlocked, rooted, and ready to go.
I want to start out with something as close to a stock installation as possible, and I have read numerous other posts about "stock ICS." But what/where is "stock" ICS?
All the ROM's in the NS 4G Forum seem to have their own level of tweaks and enhancements (and accompanying bugs.)
All I want is something close to pure ICS with, prehaps, a kernel that can be overclocked.
Appreciate the insight of those who know. Thanks!
Stock is probably equivalent to AOSP source, unaltered.
Thanks...but where do I find it? There are at least 4 different ROM's that have the ASOP moniker.
I would suggest Peter Alfonso's build

Before you go any further consider the Slim ICS ROM in the dev section.

I couldn't find Pete's ROM on XDA but found it on his site... would it be pete_crespo4g_ota_01-11-12.zip for the NS4G?
i suggest you: Cyanogenmod 9 NS4G
you will find all the information you need in this thread :

Yes use Pete crespo
But I believe someone ported the OTA ICS update and that's what your looking for.

D2vzw is the 'name' given to our variant if the s3 to identify it to apps.
Dunno what you mean by your other question.
O ok I was just thinking maybe Verizon put a updated version out cause of the bootloader getting figured out or something. So If I buy a new one I won't be limited on flashing anything right?

From my understanding (and it's very likely that I'm wrong) the idea between the 2 different dev forums is that the regular development forums is for TouchWiz (in this case) based roms and the original development is for aosp roms. However there are aosp roms in the regular forums so you got me!

I think it's more like OG Android Development are those built from source vs. those that are built off of a base which would be the Android Development section.
The difference in the forum is pretty much official vs unofficial. I.e. original would have the actual CM/AOSP/AOKP/MIUI roms and the other forum would have unoffical roms based on those.

Thanks guys for clearing that up. Looking at this forum I've realized y I missed my fascinate so much. Everything is so much easier than HTC rezound right now. Plus so much More development going on right now. I'm excited lol

I was wanting to learn how to port a ROM and was wondering what phones are compatible with porting ROMs or if it mattered. I am using the step by step tutorial given in the android development forum.

I'm no dev so I can't speak for the ease of it, but the T989 is very similar and most ROMs are cross-compatible with just a rotation fix. Might be best to start there.
You can port some ROMs to some phones. You can port a aosp ROM pretty easily to about any phone but you couldn't port a sense ROM to our skyrocket because sense is complicated and requires a lot of work because its closed sourced. Same thing with our touchwiz ROMs, it won't like being ported to another phone. So if you wanna try to port something try an AOKP, paranoid android, or miui just make sure you ask permission from the original devs for the selected ROM before you post it.

Yes, and i've heard the international SGSII LTE i9210 has the same chipset as t989 so their roms should be easy to port. A guy in this forum flashed an i727 rom on his i9210 and it worked (except for softbuttons).
That said, do NOT flash any roms that aren't i727(r) or Hercules based. The international s2's kernel would brick our phone in a heartbeat. Here's a tip, the AT&T s3 has a very close chipset to ours, if you know how to edit dalvik bytecode...

Can someone explain what the difference is between these two?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Well... as far as i could tell from using ROM's on my Galaxy S3...
Android Development = ROM's based on stock ROM provided by the manufacturer that have been modified.
Original Android Development = ROM's generally created from source, from scratch (Like Cyanogenmod)

Cheers,

I've noticed a lot of threads are mixed up among the 2 forums for the Nexus 5. Hopefully things get straightened out soon.
Well as the title states, will there be any cm11 kernels in the process of being made with undervolting and battery saving tweaks?

I know there's that towards personal but that one's dated at 12-1,2013, and I'm looking for a more recent one.. Based on latest sources

Maybe look a bit deeper than just the title, the latest KK build was released much more recently than that. Just a few days before Xmas in fact.
