Need a little help. "Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone"
I did a search and did not find an answer. Every time I try to download from XDA I get this message and the download quits. If I download to my PC I am able to transfer it and it all is good. I am sure one of you android guru's can help me out ( I still consider myself a newb). I am probably missing something simple. It would really be nice to be able to download directly to the phone.
I am running the stock froyo, rooted with a couple of minor tweaks and the typical software, Rom Manager, SetCPU, Juice Defender, etc.
Thanks guys.

Try downloading a Download Manager from the android market. It usually does the trick cause the phone dosnt support downloading certain files with extentions out of the box so u have to download a manager for it to work.

Thank you very much. Do you have a favorite? Is there anything I should look for in particular regarding features?

+1
everything was fine for me, then suddenly stopped downloading zips... Then I realized I hadn't reinstalled Andexplorer. Did that and everything downloaded like butta'...

No problem mate
Are there any programs out there with the same functionality?
downloading question
can you just choose a torrent website and choose the file and download > open with the torrent program on the phone or is there a special process i might not be seeing to actually download something?
oh wow, soon as you download it, it auto opens, I saved it to the torrent program folder on the SD card, don't know if that makes a difference though
will downloading this stuff be likely picked up by your service provider and get you told on? I want to download UFC112 but it seems iffy

Install APK installer without market

Is there a way to install Astro File manager without using the market? Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market...
Plus, it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time...
To answer this topic quickly. There is no way to install a apk without an apk installer. Be it astro or any other app. There just aint

So then you have to get one from the Market? So if you cannot use the market (don't have a connection) you can't install it?
Damn, the next release should include and APK installed because I am sure most people use APKs. If not, then why would they be using Android.
PS, wow no real reply until the second page... (Edit:kekkle's post and this post were on the second page after nobnut filled the first page with troll posts, since then they were deleted so now it's on the first page)
PS2: 100th post
Seriously now...
There is a manual way you can install apks without an apk installer...
Download the apk onto your desktop/laptop. Remove the back panel from your desktop/laptop using a hammer (a claw hammer is best but you can use a pin hammer if you have no claw hammer).
Remove the battery cover from your device (your Android phone not your vibrating butt plug).
Using the tweezers you normally use to masturbate. Find the downloaded apk and carefully place it underneath the battery. Reinsert the battery and battery cover.
Before you restart the device, firmly knock the device against a hard surface like the wall or a hard floor about 15 times until you are sure you have started the kernel flux capacitor.
Then restart the device.
If the device fails to start normally, take it back to the stockist and tell them you were born retarded and that you want to trade it in for an iPhone.
If you've got an HTC Phone you can install ASTRO (or any APK) using HTC Sync.
Can a mod cleaned this thread up, it's 2 pages of *****ing.

Oh you can? I'll have to look into it. I only got HTC Sync working on one of my computers (Windows 7 64 Bit gave driver error, XP Tablet PC Edition had some kinda error installing). But it's good to know there are options...

I reported most of nobnut's posts here, so that should be happening soon
Just use droid explorer and close this thread
or you can use adb to install apks.
so in short yes there are ways to install apk without market.
I use Android Mate for my file manager. Also MybackupPro which backs up my apk's. Ones I download from the Market, phone browser or home computer all get put in one folder & merged with a backup on my sdcard. If I need an app later and in bad cell coverage can install without downloading again.
From what I understand only apps from the Market are updated so I try and download it there first.

hmmmmm cmon guys help the guy out!! download sdk, and check the link in my signature. if you want more help pm me
You just need to download the android sdk and set the usb debug setting on the phone (Settings > Application > Development). Then installing is as easy as running "adb install <package.apk>"

where to start??

Ok I need a good place to start. I've read all the stickies and all he guides and still am a little confused on where to start. Do u root this thing like a phone or what, and I'm confused on the market, why is it not the whole android market?
Yes, you start w/ a root first. I used Clockwork Mod. it was my first time and everything ran smooth from start to finish. been on my tab for 1 week now and have not gotten bored w/ it 1 bit.
As for the market issue, you need to realize this is a Viewsonic device. They have their own proprietary market app. Browsed around before I did my mod and was NOT impressed w/ anything they had at all.
I followed the steps on this page and have not looked back...

1) Root using Z4Root
2) Flash Bekit's ClockworkMod V.8 via recovery mode
3) Flash ROM of your choice (FOR GTAB ONLY ofcourse) via recovery mode.
4) Welcome to MOD-dom!
where do i find zroot?
I believe its in the market. If not, Google zroot.apk.
So, root it, install ClockworkMod v.8, flash a ROM.
Enjoy an amazing tablet!

Of course you need to get to the market from your device to install Z4Root which is not easy on the stock firmware. If you are right out of the box, I'd do 2 and 3 and once you have a custom firmware up and running with the marketplace fix, do 1....
Then you are in 4

This Video worked for me in getting Market to work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=related
The non-uniform market is the biggest clufter suck I've seen in a while. I realize not everything can run the same apps but at least let me SEE the apps if I can't run them. Hell, it might make some people upgrade their hardware.
I think it would be better if Google visually indicated which devices (or families of devices) each app was known to be compatible with and give us an option to view everything available and choose for ourselves.
Most paid apps also have a free version so we could try them out with nothing to lose and simply uninstall if they don't work on our device. Heck, we could even add to the list of compatible devices for the app if we find it works: free community testing effectively.

I've spent a few days now, trying this and the titanium backup method over and over again trying to get the full market.
I've never been able to get all the apps I wanted (e.g. simiclock, angry birds, yahoo mail), but after watching this video, I tried one of the sample apps he used (pandora), and I am seeing it.
so, do I have the "full market"? If so, is there anyway to get more apps (i.e. the ones I mentioned above).
Thanks!

Please help!! New to the Inspire 4g.

Hey guys, I just switched from Sprint to ATT and picked up the Inspire 4g today for free! Im having trouble rooting it. Ive read all I can find and I am downloading the aahk hack kit. when I attempt to open or unzip the downloaded folder I get an error stating "the compressed folder is invalid" I have tried to redownload and get the same error. It wont even let me start the process. Please forgive me if I am an idiot and im missing something easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
just to verify, you are downloading the ace hack kit to your computer right?
you dont actually use it on the phone itself.
also, if you are using download managers (not like the built in firefox one, but add-ons), those can play hell with downloads like this

KD1StockODIN.tar File?

KD1StockODIN.tar File?
Hi guys, I recently soft bricked my sidekick4G (because I'm new to the sidekick and stupidly didn't do enough research) after installing a ROM.
The Easy One-Click Root program rooted my phone, but for some reason wouldn't pop up any super user notifications, so I went into super user and checked the allow all; that seemed to work for installing my third party apps like Root Explorer.
So I remember I installed the red CWM or w.e it's called (Voodoo?) and that work fine, I can still enter it, I can also enter the orange CWM by applying the "sdcard:update.zip" (Which I thought to be forbidden).
So here I am now getting a robotic woman's voice on every boot saying "Convert data partition, system not available"
I know I need to use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1186954 (The "[ROM][ODIN] Stock ODEXED T839UVKG2 (Sidekick 4G) Firmware [7/26/11]" thread to go into download mode and install ODIN,
SO.... My problem is that I cannot find the KD1StockODIN.tar file ANYWHERE, all megaupload websites blocked it, and risky torrents have already pissed me off enough.
If any of you have this file, can you Please, PLEASE attach it or upload it, or find a working link for me? I would really, really appreciate it.
Or
If there are any other alternatives to fix the dilemma I'm in, please let me know, as I am new to the Sidekick 4G.
Thank You Guys! And I can promise some THANKS for you too if you help me out =)
***SOLVED[[/U][/U]
Finally Found a thread with everything I needed, drivers, flash program; it was so simple. I realizes I made the mistake of having anti-virus on, with quaranteened most rooting programs. I also didn't have the right drivers, or flash player installed.
This Thread has it all, and much thanks to the thread maker JiN1337
