Possible fix for Rebooting Charge's - Verizon Droid Charge

After torturing the andirc.net #charge channel and poor imnuts, I think I've figured out an issue to random reboots with the Charge. I have tried everything.. reformatting cache data datadata system. Different kernels flashing different ways.. what I finally came up with... Anything that accessed the SD card would cause a reboot. I pulled my SD card earlier today and didn't have one single reboot. So when I got time I reformatted my SD Card and.... no reboots..
Hope this helps some people out..

Interesting. Glad you finally figured it out though. Thanks for the information!

I spoke to teir 2 tech support at verizon and I spoke to a higher level tech support at samsung and both told me (without prompting) that samsung has programmed into their kernel to not allow Advance task killers and many other task managers as the samsung rom has its own task manager. Both said this was the reason for random reboots. Took all task managers off the phone and voiala... no reboots for 3 days now.

hmm...i dont run task killers...haven't ran one actually ever on any of the androids I use...yet my phone has rebooted at least a dozen times. I am jsut hitting 24 hours with the phone.
I am trying the SD card tricked mentioned in the OP right now...will report back with results.

Been getting random reboots all day long since I activated the device. Reformatted the SD card but it hasn't seemed to help. Not running any task killers.
I did downgrade to ED1 and am rooted so not sure if that's got anything to do with it or not.
Any other ideas?

This one i am kicking myself for as i should have known better....but since i did this this morning my issues went away...but try running a fix permissions...i used the voodoo cwm for it
I just am upset i didntt do it earlier

SD card trouble

Most of the time my phone will not recognize my SD card. I've got the one that came with it(why does if have a Samsung card ?). It's not rooted and all I have installed is apps from the market.

Have you attempted to make a gold card? If so you might have gone wrong doing so

Nope,no gold card.I've literally done nothing to it.

A few people on this forum (including me) have had this problem. At least one person mentioned seeing it with a 16GB card, so it is probably not just a problem with the stock card. Popping the card out and back in should allow you to remount it from the settings.
I've noticed this has happened to me before after removing my phone from the charger. I wonder if it has something to do with the "Connect to PC" setting. Mine had been defaulting to "Disk drive", but since I have set it to "Charge only" I haven't seen the problem again.
I'm hoping this is just a software issue and not a hardware one.
I've had problems with mine as well but I found something that works for me. I use the "Safely Remove Hardware" on my pc, wait a few seconds and then re-mount. I almost never use that feature but it seems to help reset things for me.
I have seen this problem also on the stock card, Ive always used the "safely remove hardware" option when disconnecting it from the pc but yet it randomly disconnects itself from my phone. However i also do the disk drive setting when connecting it so i will have to try putting it to charge only
mine has always been set on charge only and it does it all the time. im gonna call att in a little while and have a talk with them about it. cause if its a hardware issue i want a different phone plain and simple. is everyone elses card a samsung 8g ?
Yes, mine is a samsung 8GB.
i did a little searching and it happens to the incredible as well regardless of the brand of card or size, sadly the forum i found it on never had a solution
Mine starting doing this before I left the ATT parking lot. At first I thought it may be having problems because of all the syncing the phone has to do during the first hour or so of being connected to your google account. A week later and it was still doing it once every two days or so. I took it back and they gave me a new phone and I haven't had an issue with it.
Some people are saying that it may not have been inserted correctly and to remove it using the spring mechanism and to re-insert it. this helped a few people from what ive read. that however hasnt worked for me, but may for others
ive taken mine out and cleaned it off jiggled it around and anything else you can think of. ive never had a phone with this prob. before. guess im gonna have to roll by the att store 2moro and get a new one.
just went to the shack and got mine replaced, the guy that handled it all said that the evo had the same problem and was fixed with an update so im hoping htc can get this fixed
i just wanted to make sure i wasnt the only one having this problem. guess ill stop by and get a new phone in the morning
Got my new phone and its working good for now

Random reboots explained..... Maybe?

I spoke to teir 2 tech support at verizon and I spoke to a higher level tech support at samsung and both told me (without prompting) that samsung has programmed into their kernel to not allow Advance task killers and many other task managers as the samsung rom has its own task manager. Both said this was the reason for random reboots when I told them I was experiencing them... lol
False. There is no way they can program a ROM now to prevent any and all task killers from working. As soon as one is updated, they could bypass whatever method was put in place to prevent it. Also, creating the ROM to reboot if a task killer is installed would be the dumbest way to keep people from using them.
What they likely meant was that the ROM/kernel is setup to prevent the need for a task killer as the system will manage it automatically. This is the same as every other android device out there as they all have built in memory/task management and it isn't something Samsung created on their own.
the rep was trying to make you feel better. I bought my charge yesterday morning, it has random rebooted since i turned it on. i have never used a task manager of any sort
i work for verizon and i can tell you its false as well, but mine has been doing random reboots now since i got it and i have been tracking them and there seems to be no reason. i have so many log files and its never when i am doing the same actions on the phone eather.
Try formatting your sd card. Backup contents of course.
Only use conservative CPU scaling.
I just posted in another thread in the dev section, I will back up the statement of it being false with task killers, as I have never ran one.
I am just going on 24 hours with the phone, and it has rebooted at least a dozen times....sometimes twice in a row...as soon as it boots, then bam again..also in my pocket idle, and on the charger a few minutes ago...and i havent touched it since a few hours ago.
The SD card almost makes sense...I was having issues this mornign with copying files over...with the card mounted through windows...causing explorer to freeze up. Just a minute ago it froze up again copying files off...just so I can try the reformat.
I hope there is a resolution for this...as the way I ended up with this phone, I am stuck with it...unless I buy one full retail...
Interesting stuff guys. Exactly what i was hoping to hear from you guys. I thought this sounded like bs... lol
On a cooler note.. my phone hasn't rebooted since i flashed stock ed1 rooted, flashed jt's voodoo and cwm recovery, and imnuts' kernel. Did all those things and the phone has not rebooted once. My recent reboot success must me due to flashing some solid kernels. Thanks guys

Mine hasn't rebooted yet (I've only had mine for 3 days, tho). I had stock ED2 for about 24 hours, and I now have VooDoo installed.
I didn't bother installing CWM yet, since it doesn't work yet.
I've had the phone since May 16th and today was the first reboot I noticed. I don't think it was random though- It seems like a virus scanner I was updating froze- it was stuck on "installing" forever and finally it just rebooted.
Otherwise haven't noticed any random reboots.
yea i dont run task killers and my phone still reboots about once a day lol. im assuming its a software issue that will be fixed in a update sometime. its not a major annoyance as of now so i dont see it as a big deal
My wife and I both have a Charge. Hers is stock--mine's rooted. Neither one have ever had a random reboot. We've had them since the first week they were out.
Maybe it does, and I've just never noticed it before? Hmm... Now you've all got me paranoid
Pay attention to it and see if it reboots when it is trying to scan the SD card. On my OG Droid I kept getting reboots and I noticed it did it while it was scanning the SD at boot. Turns out it was a bad file on the SD card so I'd try wiping it if it continues.
I have also noticed that if the battery gets critically low (say less than 10%) mine while reboot and hang at the boot animation. Doesn't bother me but has anyone else had this happen?

I have never had a random reboot up until yesterday morning. I've had the phone since day 1 too.
Very strange. And on top of the random reboot, my 4G connection is very moody, worse than the Thunderbolt.
I can't seem to get a stable 4G signal, and I live in a 4G area.
RE: random reboots
Hi Folks, This is my first post in this forum as I am a newbie. Anyway I just wanted to confirm the techs B.S.. My wife and I both got the charge on day one, She had two task killers and I had none. Neither of us has had any random reboots yet. I had copied all our files from our old SD cards onto the new ones that came with the charges. The only thing that may be different is I formatted the cards before putting my files onto them. Hope this helps.

[Q] my inspire may be dying

As of a few days ago, my inspire has learned a new trick.
but before I explain what is going on, heres the situation im in.
Ive Been running Icecoldsandwich for about a month now with some random UI/hot reboots here and there which is to be expected, no big deal.
however as of about 3 days ago, my inspire started to fully reboot from the white HTC screen, Werid, but **** happens so i ignored it.
Now it is doing this about every half hour,no matter what, i dont even have to touch the damn thing and it does this. Im Beginning to think its a hardware issue.
Heres what Ive tried so far
-battery pull (nothing)
-was using BLN which uses more power in standby so i upped voltages a bit (nothing)
-disabled BLN (nothing)
-disabled/enabled start up tweaks (getting desperate)
- restored an old backup of black ice which never had this issue ( STILL REBOOTED WTFF)
-some other stuff that i cant remember
Now i have an PD98IMG.zip on my sd card which was made when i originally rooted my phone and am about to restore that, but I have a feeling that wont help.
The only thing i can think of is that its a hardware issue, because after restoring that backup this issue shouldve disappeared and Im really at my wits end. SO before i throw the damn thing across the room and smash it, can anyone PLEASE help me out.
Im not new to the whole rooting game so dont treat me like a noob, ive been messing with this phone for a while now and this is the first time ive had an issue like this, which seriously appeared out of nowhere for no reason. Ive been on Ice cold sandwich for over a month now and this just started.
Thanks for any help/advice, If anyone has encountered this issue please contact me
PS: sorry to make a thread about this but ive searched both inspire &desire hd forums and came up empty handed.
You didn't mention anything about your micro sd card. Will it boot without the card inserted or using a different card freshly formatted? Corrupt cards or cards that are almost full can cause hair pulling issues.
Hmmmmm. That's a very good point you bring up there. My cards got over a gig left on it but hasn't been formatted since I rooted the phone.
I suppose I'll try that though since im out of options.
since I had to make it a "goldcard" will there be anything I need to do after I format it to make it work correctly?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Also, it does boot without an SD card, I'll see if it turns off with it out
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Does not matter if it is a gold card. Will not affect anything. If your phone does not reboot with the card out then most likely it is going bad, has corrupt files, has apps or widgets moved to it that really should have been left on the phone. Or you used a backup app to restore system files that may be causing issues.
If having the card out allows your phone to run without reboots I would format that card, wipe that phone, reinstall a ROM and start clean and fresh.
This behavior could also be caused by a bad battery. Are you still using the original? A lot of them were pretty crappy.
well It still reboots with no sd card in it so I suppose it isn't that.
As for the battery, it is the original and that would make a lot of sense cause I leave it on the charger a lot.
my sister has the same phone so ill have to swap batteries and see if that makes a difference
thanks for the advice guys, I'm months from an upgrade so I really need to get to the bottom of this.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
If it does turn out to be the battery, I would recommend an Anker brand replacement. They are pretty good and cheaper than the Seidio ones.
well I can rule out the battery cause I switched them and it continues to reboot.
I'm beginning to think it's the radio because it doesn't seem to reboot in airplane mode and it seems to reboot more when I'm driving, perhaps when switching towers.
I'll experiment with a few different ones and see what I get
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
okay everyone well its been some time now & I am still dealing with the same BS.
It has recently come to my attention that im not the only one dealing with this problem so I want to refresh this thread & perhaps get some new advice & options.
heres where I stand:
ive tried everything from roms-radios-batteries - everything in between. adjusted voltages, & every single setting available.
What ive found so far is that this issue is almost definitely signal related, when in airplane mode my phone Does not reboot.
ive also been advised that removing the sim card stops the reboots as well.
ALSO, I turned off 3g/4G for a few hours with only 1 reboot.
however I feel that was due to a different reason cause normally my phone reboots at least once every hour if not more.
im losing my mind & am about to smash this POS if I cant figure something out.
Is it possible its ATT related?
Should I return to stock? (unroot) -(really wanna avoid that)
WTFF. please, someone help! im going nuts!
Again any advice would Def be appreciated, & if anyone else has this problem please chime in & state your position.
sorry for the long post, (trying to be thorough)
& Thanks in advance

[?] Radom Choppiness and Reboots

Ive looked through the threads but none related to my issue.. Ive been in the rooting game for 5 years or so, i know what im doing and whats going on -- This particular issue bugs the crap outta me -- been trying to resolve this issue for a little over a month now.. No solution so far.
-- No matter what Rom i use ICS or JB.. No matter what Kernel i use.. I get random reboots (MAINLY while listening to music).. Actually, come to think of it -- thats the only time i get reboots =/ --
While listening to music, it'll be fine for awhile -- then i think (when the cpu goes into a lower state) the music starts to chop a bit... Then when i try to wake the phone, it takes a pretty long time for the unlock screen to show -- when it finally does, and when i try to unlock it, the screen doesnt register to my touch -- it delays. When i finally get the phone unlocked (music still playing) there is soo much lag and choppiness with the phone..
at this point, i would stop playing the music but the phone would still lag until i reboot the phone. Then everything is normal... (Until i play music again)
Another issue (but on the same topic) -- When i play music for awhile, the phone will just reboot out of no where. (This is the most common issue for me).
Ive tried a lot of different cpu settings-- highs and lows, different I/O's, and different governors.. No avail. .. ive even tried different music apps -- same thing happens
Ive changed out my SD card like 3 times and i do the whole wipe thing when coming from different roms..
* But this is the kicker * -- It only started doing this like a little over a month ago and ive been testing/trying different solutions ever since --- My phone has never done this before -- and i havent changed my *routine* of flashing either -- so idk what it could be.
Any solutions guys..?? I have the lastest firmware and everything -- just throwing that out there as well.
EDIT -- Im leaning towards an early stage of a bad battery perhaps..? I have the stock one.
I know you said you took sd card out, but have you wiped and formatted your sd card on a computer and put back in? My phone has acted up every so often and formatting my sd card has helped.

hmm didnt think about that.. doin it right now.. thanks
EDIT -- Did what you asked me to.. and i hope im not speaking too soon lol, but the phone has been operating normal all day.. ive been playing music all day without a hiccup.. thanks for the suggestion man.
ill update this, when and or if the phones craps out again.

Random reboots

I've had a few random reboots in the 6 days I've owned the phone. Most of them were in the first few hours so I just checked it up to my new phone settling down.
So when I got one out of the blue this morning I started to wonder it any of you have been experiencing this.
So please if you did or do get random reboots. Leave a comment so we can keep an eye on it.
BTW it might not happen before your eyes but if you have to put in a pin to get it an you did not schedule a reboot, it was random.
Let us know.
After the latest update i have random reboot as well daily once... Mostly when it's goes to sleep..
I have Uninstalled all the bixby remap applications... Let's monitor for today and see how it's going...

I have had about 3 random reboots so far. still on stock firmware, no updates available for me yet (even though it's sim free). I just put it down to bugs that should get ironed out with updates.
Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not alone. Let's keep an eye on this.
None so far here before and after update.

Yes.. I am getting them every 4-5 hours. Reset to stock with no apps and it still happens

My phone rebooted again about an hour ago... Sigh.
Mine doesnt. Are you ising a package disabler?

You never noticed having the volume notification out of the blue even though you did not power cycle your phone? The whole reboot can't take more than 20 seconds. It's mad fast. You won't notice it unless you're actually holding the phone when it happens.
This an issue on the F models?
Can you give us some info?
Which version is your s8? Is it from at&t?

Which variant?
None for me but my S6E had them so much I had to return it. I installed an app called reset or reboot counter. The worst day I had something like 130! It would kill the battery too
I had twice since I bought my s8+ exynos model.

AT&T
Had same issue
My phone would randomly freeze once a day then restart. The reason for the problem seems to be the update that patched bixby from being remapped.
I'm using the Sprint Variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8+.
I have seen two fixes for this issue. The first solution which worked for me was to clear the cache in recovery (boot holding power, volume down, and bixby), I did this three times as if it was a rom. The second solution is to back everything up and do a factory reset.
Random reboots....I had lots

Yes, I had a big problem with it rebooting the 2nd day after I installed all my apps. It would reboot 3-5 times in about 4 hours. I called Samsung support and they had me wipe the cache and told me if that didn't work, do a factory rest. After the cache wipe it rebooted on it own 1/2 hr. later.....not good. So then I went back and moved all the apps that allowed me to move them to the SD card, back to the internal storage. The problem went away, no reboots for 3 days...none! So then I started to move the apps back to the SD card, one at a time, one only per day. On the fourth day, fourth app, the phone rebooted by itself a few minutes after I moved the app to the SD card. I've seen several web sites that it may be a problem (software) with how it deals with the SD card, but other users have reported the same issue and don't use a SD card. Hopefully Samsung is looking into the matter.
