ota update worth it? - Thunderbolt General

I don't have the random reboot feature everyone keeps talking about. Is it included with this update? My phone only reboots when I tell it to. Will I have to re-root my phone and lose all the crazy stupid mods I made?

I may be wrong, but if you are rooted, I think you are already running everything in the update.

I think the OTA upgrade is the radio in;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997724&highlight=RUU
noted as; 1.12.605.6 to 1.13.605.7
if you are not running the radio, you should be able to boot to recovery and upgrade just the radio without touching the ROM. Having a nandroid backup handy is always a great practice.

Neither the old radio nor the new one has caused random reboots on my TB. You can flash the latest radio by going to the above linked radio thread and downloading it. Flashing the radio will not modify your ROM in any other way. You're rooted so if you have problems you can easily go back to the old radio.

I have random reboots about once or twice a day. Just rooted last night and still had one today. The worst thing about it is that the battery drops anywhere from 10-20% after the reboot. That sucks.

im on the new radio, with CM7, no reboots at all here

What are the advantages of updating the radio?

Updated radio usually means better/stronger signal, and can also yield better battery life.

I wouldn't take the update. My phone reboots about 6 times a day. Tired of this BS. Feels like I have TP2 again.

Random reboots?

First off I want to start by saying I have flashed my rom to Bamf 1.5 remix. I do not overclock my phone however I have tried limiting my clockspeed hoping to prevent a reboot. The phone did not start the random reboot until I flashed to said rom. I have tried reflashing but no improvements, any ideas?

It has happened to me but I believe it just me OCing, flashing back to the kernel that I was using before when my phone was stable and testing it out. If not, I will just go back to 1.5
Also, does anyone know how to edit the power control widgets in the pulldown? I can't find any options. Thanks.
Did you flash the new radio when you loaded up BAMF 1.5?
If so, there's your problem
Happened to me with BAMF 1.6 and leankernel 192X, but only when I set it to ondemandX thru SETCPU. Other than that I've had no reboots.

yeah its pretty common for people who flashed the new radio to have reboots. i have had some of those issues, i found that using different kernels at different clocking speeds made my phone more stable. NOTE: i am not a pro, just something i noticed.
What's really behind all the random reboots?
OK... So I've tried just about every rom on the dev thread, I purchased the TB on launch date and had it rooted as soon as Jcase posted S-off instructions... I am now on the new radio and until today, I haven't had a single random reboot. Then all of a sudden, just about an hour ago, as I'm backing out of Tapatalk, bam... Phone rebooted itself...
Now I've been reading on just about every rom thread where people have been experiencing random reboots. Some think the new radio is the cause, but some people are on the new radio and have not experienced this. Others on the old radio still get random reboots.
Others think its the rom but people have noted this issue on most If not all of the rom threads.
Others think its the kernel that's causing it, but again, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to nail it down to a single kernel. Furthermore, some of these people are not OCing, myself included.
Which leads me to the strangest part of all this. My wife also has the TB. Her phone is totally stock and is not rooted. I got it for her day after launch and for the last few weeks, her phone has also been randomly rebooting. Not constantly, mind you. Just enough to be a nuisance. She has still not updated to OTA... The only suspect to this is that this appears to have started after the 4G outage a few weeks ago... And we are in a 3G only area but there was a day or so we could only connect to 1x...
So what's really causing these random reboots? I'm no expert, never claimed to be one, but is it possible that something going on between our phones and the Verizon network is causing this?
Thoughts... Ideas...?

Great post. It's good to know even non rooted users are having reboots.
non-rooted.... Updated yesterday... and got a reboot today.

I have had a few reboots across a few different rom, radio, and kernal combos. The only thing that all my reboots have had in common was I had GPS enabled. Ive yet to see a reboot with it off. Could just be a coincidence.

stock rom, not rooted, has had multiple random reboots
I have had no random reboots, or none that I have personally experienced. I figured if my phone was randomly rebooting I would have noticed a considerable battery drain. I have not noticed that yet. I honestly think that this might be an issue for people with little to no 4g coverage. I am bothered that this has not been addressed yet by verizon as I have seen so many people complain about this.
Hopefully I dont get these either, who knows may it is just phones that are may be defective hardware wise.
Well i just wanted to drop my $.02
I am Rooted and have been just about the same time the OP has been rooted.
I USED to have reboots. I install the full RUU and had reboots i also installed just the RADIO file and had reboots. I also reverted back to stock by the RUU provided by JCase. I Then flashed 1.6 followed 1.6.3 and have not had any problems. I assume that those 2 already had the radio file in them and i didn't not have to flash anything additional. Since being on 1.6 then 1.6.3 i have experienced not 1 reboot. Unless i did it myself.
I did notice then before when i did have the reboots (when i manually flashed RUU or just the RADIO file). I had reboots 3 different ways. I would either get a reboot when my phone had been sitting next to me for a while i would notice the white screen and know it was a reboot. Also the 2 other times was backing out of TapaTalk or native browser/dolphin HD.
So i don't know if that is in a way related. I just don't have them anymore.
I noticed that whenever my phone would reboot (on the leaked radio only,) I had a weak 3g signal. I watched this happen several times. My guess would be the people who aren't having reboots are in an area where they constantly have a good signal. Can anyone else corroborate this?

This is a possibility... But if that's the case this will be the first Android device I've owned that has rebooted itself randomly due to GPS. Even the Samsung Vibrant, which had horrible GPS right out of the box, didn't reboot itself when it was turned on...
However, if this is the case, why has this only become a recent issue.. now my memory isn't so good... But I don't remember seeing much about this issue on rom threads until recently... I.e the past few weeks... Neither my wife's nor my phone randomly rebooted until just a few weeks ago, and we both have our GPS turned on everyday, all day...

I live in a strong 3G area and my phone has never re-booted itself as far as I know. I'm doing the update tomorrow and will be interested to see if the problem starts.....I hope not.

Unfortunately, I had a solid signal when my phone rebooted this afternoon. I was a stone's throw from Philadelphia on I-95. I've never had signal issues along I-95 between New York and Philadelphia. I'm running the released update.

This as well is a possibility... Although I am in an area where 3g is strong... I have seen on my and my wife's phone... Even when standing still... That the 3g icon will vanish and come back seconds later...I am in a decent sized college town, population of about 70000... I couldn't say how strong 3g actually is but its everywhere in the city limits... And most of the countryside...
I have traveled to cities with strong 4g but I didnt stand around long enough in a single place to really watch the phone to see if it was dropping data...
Thanks for the constructive input, everyone... Lets keep the corroboration going and see if we can find a pattern..

The only time I had reboot was on the leaked ruu which is now the OTA.
Once I went to BAMF 1.5 with new radio and new base no reboot. About a week ago I flashed back to stock radio just to compare after being on the new one for a while. I see nothing different between them really.

Tunderbolt Turns Itself Off

Greetings,
My thunderbolt was experiencing random reboots since the OTA and now has a new problem it will shut itself off randomly. I'm stock and am getting really frustrated. Anyone else experiencing these issues? I really don't want to get an Assurion referb from Verizon as a replacement or send mine off to be serviced. Anyone else with this problem? I have tried turning LTE on and off with LTE switch from the market and also have tried enabling Rev A with the ##778# edit menus.

My T-Bolt has turned itself off twice now, while on the charger. Missed my morning alarms and showed up to work late. Unlike my D1, the alarm does not sound when the phone is off.
T-bolt turns itself off after OTA update
My T-bolt turned itself off during the first night, after the OTA update. Had full battery charge. Completely stock. No problems since (Keeping fingers crossed). Will report back if it happens again. Would also like to hear of others having this problem.
after the latest update, ive been experiencing the SMS problem (cant send out has to reboot it again), and randomly shut off
Or is it just my thunderbolt?
I have had the same problem, Couple of reboots and missed my alarms for work one day as well since it turned itself off. I never had a reboot on custom roms until i updated my radio to this new OTA radio. Hopefully this new radio from the gingerbread radio that leaked will work better. if not anyone know if flashing the old radio on top of the new one will take me back to my old setup?
Stock, not rooted, no issues until update. Now phone reboots and drops data. Anyway to get back to original software?

I am rooted, but I am also experiencing random shutdowns of my phone. The battery is not dead. The phone does not restart itself, but simply shuts itself off, without even trying to come back on.
I never got an OTA. My phone reboots and I missed class bcause it powered off while plugged in one night too. It powers off at least 3 times a week.. Totally stock excapt for launcher pro...
Just had this problem last night. Up until now i have only had the reboots, but last i went to pick up my phone and it was off. Of course i thought it was dead until it turned on, lol.

same thing has happened twice to me -- luckily i wake up early on work days regardless of the alarm....
Most random reboots are caused by the newer LTE radio (1.13.605.7)...Seems to be exactly that too...random...some have issues some don't. I think it has to do with location/network in the area. I would get random reboots until I downgraded the LTE radio to 1.12.605.6 of course this requires the phone to be rooted. Good luck!

No signal for 1-2 secs

Hi everyone! So I got G2X last week and the first day it worked great. It shipped with 2.3.3 on the device. Ended up rooting it and flashing a custom 2.3.3 rom, followed by Cyanogen mod nightly 2.3.5. Now, next day was my first day back at work and for some weird reason my signal would drop completely for 1-2 secs followed by device re-acquiring it and everything is fine again... super annoying and results in crappy data . Basically 4G/3G completely turns off, same goes for the radio, then its back to normal, anywhere from 2-4 bars usually. Any ideas?
That happened to me on CM7 aswell. I'm not exactly sure what causes it, but I haven't had any problems on the stock ROM.
I usually just have gps locking issues
We had a new Guy start today and he's gone the same phone on 2.2 though, doesn't seem as if he has same issues.
Are you just running stock rooted rom now?

Random reboots and phone app crashes on stock gingerbread

My wife's galaxy s 4g, reboots all the time by itself. We'll be eating dinner and hear it reboot itself in the other room. Also her phone app crashes all the time when she tries to make a call.
We complained to tmobile, they replaced it with a refurbished unit, loaded with the latest gingerbread update. Has all the same problems, and the only thing they'll do is replace it with another unit.
Since it happened to two different units, I have to believe it's an issue with the stock software, either kernel, rom or radio. Does anybody have a fix?
Is there a combo or kernel/rom/radio that is highly recommended? I don't mind rooting but would like to keep it as close to stock as possible, she wont like change.
There are custom ROMS and alternative radios that you can flash, but if you are having these problems with stock then I'd be hesitant to say they will go away with a different ROM or Radio. I would go for the 3rd T-Mo replacement....the refurb units are pot luck. I had a warranty replacement a few months back and it took two phones before I got one that worked properly.

Try the 1-Click Gremlin Remover in my signature. It will give you an older stock GB (2.3.5), custom pre-rooted kernel, and clear out any issues. It takes a while to download, but it works quite well. It is fully bloated, with all the bells and whistles that comes stock on our phones.
After that, you can dl kies mini and try the update yourself. But I would suggest instlling one of brian's (bhundven) kernel to maintain root (also found in my signature).
That should fix her up and maintain stock. Or, if you can convince her, try vahalla black or erik's new ROM Seet Child of Mine.

I'm wondering if it's not a problem with an app she has installed. Has she tried running it without installing any apps to see if the problem persists? Maybe perform a factory data reset (make sure you backup anything she wants to keep) and run it without installing any apps for a day or so to see if it works ok. If so, then start installing apps one at a time. Let each app run a day or so before installing the next. It's a pain but it may narrow down the issue.
Thanks for the replies. I'll try downgrading.
She doesn't use many apps, she has beautiful widgets, draw something, and maybe a couple others like facebook, etc - basically only the super popular ones.

I used beautiful widgets on my old phone, it would reboot when clicked on after a bit of up time. IIRC it was a known bug and should have been fixed by now.
I would try what stephen suggests as long as you still have time on the warranty to exchange.
My wife's stock does the same thing. Before and after the GB Kies update. It may be samsung problem. Kinda like the random reboots we are getting on the custom roms. I wonder if they could be related.

[Q] HTC Desire HD - Tried lots of Roms but flashing Radio has wrecked reception.

Hi, I'm a noob with half an idea of what I'm doing. Please excuse any stupidity (I was born with it and am learning to develop it everyday)
I have a problem that I think is probably for [RADIO][LATEST: 26.16.04.09] The HTC Desire HD Radio Thread----- but because I'm new, I can't post there.
I'll try and give you what I think is the the most relevant information
I have a 2 year old HTC Desire HD still running on the UK Orange network.
I have successfully flashed probably more than 10 roms over that period (to try out different features).
About 7 weeks ago (stupidly) flashed a new radio.
It seemed to go well and my phone is correctly reporting the new
"Baseband Version 12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.11_M"
I'm currently running Android 4.2.2
Kernel 3.0.78_JellyTime_42_R9-g35b611d
which I like but ...
ever since I flashed my radio my reception has been awful
I hardly ever use data when I'm out (I tend to be in places where I can use wifi)
so usually my data is turned off.
I just want to receive calls or texts but most of the time my phone shows no signal bars and callers can't get through (no texts either).
My texts seem to come through if I switch to airplane mode then switch back to normal.
Unfortunately its not totally consistent but most of the time, through the day, my phone (which I was probably successfully using earlier) just decides to lose any signal and then not "reconnect" to a mast unless I force it (through airplane off then on).
I have subsequently tried a few different Roms (without re-flashing the Radio) but the problem is the same whichever Rom I use.
I've read lots and lots and the Radio I'm using seems to be well liked but I'm guessing that for some reason it doesn't like my phone. I'm thinking I need to go back to a different radio but I don' t know which one and before someone tells me to go back to the previous one (before my problem) I've tried so many different things I can't remember what Radio and Rom I last had that worked successfully (I told you I was stupid).
The battery now drains very quickly, only lasts a quarter as long as it did 2 months ago. I believe (but could be wrong) that is because my phone is constantly trying to register with a mast but is getting no signal.
I want my phone to be reliable, I don't need the latest "bells & whistles" ie I don't want to be trying out someone's newest "nightly" with a whole lot of features not yet working.
I appreciate you guys have put in so much effort and know so much more than me.
I hope I haven't bored you but that I've included enough info to help your diagnosis.
Last bit of info, I notice that on a lot of roms, the camera seems to be one of the features that regularly "doesn't work yet". The camera is one of the features I use the most (it's important to me).
What should I do?
All help gratefully received... Thanks in anticipation
Hey, I flashed my stock HTC Desire HD with CM 10.1 eventually - had to spend lots of time figuring out how to get S-OFF and I'm sure in that process the radio image got reflashed with another which causes the same symptoms you describe - excessive battery use, phone hot at the radio module, not getting constant signal, etc. Now I'm also rather concerned because I wouldn't want to brick the device by flashing a bad radio image...
If you've figured anything out, let me know, I'll be stuck reading...
