Reboot Issue App Installation Related - T-Mobile LG G2x

Reboot is everywhere on this forum and I did have a problem with it in the beginning. Owning the phone for three weeks now and I can honestly say that the reboot issue just went away.
The reboot issue may be related to installing new applications. The first week I owned the device I constantly downloaded new applications from the market, and next thing you know I get a reboot whenever I charge my phone.
So I did something different after restoring it to factory setting. Every time I download a new application I re-started my G2X and never had the reboot issue again.
I have read that most of the reboot complaints arise from the first few days after owning the device. So what do most people do after getting their phone during the first week? Download applications! Try re-starting your device after you install a new application from the market and see if you still get the reboot the next time you recharge the device.
I gave the G2X some time, and for me to get acquainted to it, and I can honestly say that I'm loving it more. Reading this forum only made me paranoid that this device is simply faulty, but giving it a chance to do its job simply made it more and more amazing everyday.

My opinion is strictly comprised from anecdotal evidence but I believe the reboots to be more dual-core/battery related. I don't think they're currently handled correctly in the system. I honestly don't believe there is anything that we can do on our end until LG releases the updates.

Could be. I do NOT have reboots on my phone running CM7. The battery driver is stupid so one minute the phone will say 39% then dead the next. But the phone was legitimately dead and wouldn't boot without a charge.
I've had mine on for 5 days before I broke down and flashed the latest CM7 nightly.
I don't run any crazy software that I didn't on my Nexus One or other. If I do download something, I'll play with it and uninstall it.
Here is my list:

I recently got a phone off craigslist so was really tensed abt the reboot problem. Didn't have any reboot issue while charging (I used the charger i use for G2 rather than the stock one as i heard complaints). But as said above, i left the phone at 49% in the night. Got up in the morning and then used it for 3hours straight and guess what.. the status still said 48%. And then when i was using suddenly i got a battery low popup for a fraction of second and then phone went down. As said above, couldn't get it to start at all unless i charged it. So is there a way to fix this with out rooting and all that stuff?

As of right now, no. That's the big issue most of us are having.

No. How do we do that? Mine is not rooted. Still running stock android without a sim card as im waiting for my unlock code ..
The calibration i know is let it die and charge it to 100%.. But even while charging , the battery % doesn't give the right info unless i remove and replug the charger in multiple times.

I guess somehow my G2X decided to act out on me for some reason. Woke up this morning with the phone off after leaving it charging all night, then the reboot cycle started. I didn't know it was this bad when it does happen. The only changes I did that I can think of was that I played a lot of games yesterday. I did notice the back near the camera heating up after maybe 10mins of playing, and was also on the phone for awhile.
I love this phone, and I'm impressed with the hardware aspect of it, but it tested my patience with the rebooting. I was actually scared for a bit that I won't be able to have any phone for the day.
If this continues I'm pretty sure this is going back. Just happy I have three months with costco for an exchange. Waiting for the release of GB, and hoping they also have a fix for the reboot issue. If the HTC Sensation does hold up with no issues then exchange it is. Yikes

[Q] Phone doesn't come out of standby

Hey everyone, is anyone else experiencing the phone not coming out of standby when pressing the power button?
I've experienced this 3 times now and overnight while left on the charger to use for my alarm clock, it didn't go off. I tried to press the power button, no go. I had to pull the battery out to get the phone going again. Good thing I still had my nexus one for the alarm.

This phone has been a pain in the arse. I have missed multiple emails because the thing randomly shuts off or locks in standby. I have had to pull the battery three times since yesterday.
Hope the magical devs get going on Gingerbread for our phone.
No reboots for me. I switched from NS because of the reboots and I needed a stable phone, but you may have faulty unit. If it's still giving you problems after a reset try to get a replacement. I'm getting insurance ASAP.

Where can i get insurance for this phone? Is it directly with T-Mobile?
I've had two non-responsive out-of-standby situations. The first one I was able to reboot, while the second I needed to pull the battery.
I've also had a single unrequested reboot this morning.
T-minus 29 days.
Insurance on these phones is only available at time of purchase.

No issues whatsoever for me either and I have had the phone since yesterday.
I've noticed it does it when it's on the charger. I've done a factory reset, uninstalled all apps except one to log the logcat and see how it does on and off the charger. I don't have a sim card in though, that and the apps are the only things I'm changing for this shut off test.
My first Android device! I had the same issue this morning. Just got the phone yesterday and had it on the charger overnight. It worked fine first thing in the morning but after a couple hours is shut off and wouldn't come back on. I had to pull the battery to get it up again.
I had this problem myself. Called LG and they said they haven't experienced this problem nor received any calls about it (bull****) . So I returned.the.phone for a new one and haven't had that problem since.
I had random reboots and my screen wouldn't come out of stand by. Usually happened after I didn't use the phone for 10 minutes or more.

The second occasion when mine didn't resume from standby is when I think I left Google Earth running. It's possibly a GPS-related issue, or something of that nature.
It's been nearly 24 hours since then, and one random reboot, but it's been solid otherwise.
forum over at T-Mobile is also tracking this issue.

I've fixed my issue by doing a factory reset and setting wifi calling to cell preferred. Seems like some issues with the phone software wise from all your answers

I encountered lockup once, but I don't encounter random shutdown/reboot yet.

Kampf you are wrong about that i am a RSA and you can get insurance up to 14days after buying the hone. I plan on putting the Lifetime warranty on the phone no need for the insurance as well.
I only have the issue when charging via wall. I rooted my device and used titanium backup to freeze a lot of junk that's constantly running including the wifi calling.
I also had the issue of the phone not coming out of standby after being hooked up to the wall charger overnight. It required a battery pull. Wifi Calling was turned on, like others mentioned they had.
I'm having the random lockups and the random reboots. This morning alone within an hour I had to pull the battery 4 times to get the phone to come back on. I've had it happen on charger and off charger. The odd thing is it never happens while the phone is in use, only when it goes into standby.
I've been having the same issues on standby too. The weird thing is that most of my reboots happen when have my phone in my pocket or when the lights go off after going into standby. It could be purely coincidental though.

Pattern to my reboots - do yours have a pattern?

So over the last few days my phone seems to have settled into some sort of weird pattern with reboots. Although there are outliers, in general it always seems to reboot between 19-24h of uptime and nearly always at like 45 or 50 mins past the hour. It's the most bizarre thing in the world and why I think there's some funky software doing it. I don't have true random reboots, but I can't figure out what it is that is doing this. Very odd.
In all cases my phone is sitting with the screen off (I've NEVER had a reboot while using the phone/screen on) but it doesn't matter what radios are on, WiFi, BT, GPS (can be off or on).
Last time I ran "CatLog" a logging app from Market and had it write to SD logs and a reboot happened but it only by default writes every 200 lines so the last line in the file was probably not the last line in the log. I'm going to try again later and set it to write every line or few lines so I can see the last entry in the log before a reboot. Might shine some light on it.
Just find it very strange since it's a very stable and capable phone for about 18hrs and then it just craps on itself. Very strange.
finally. I too just think it is some weird software or driver bug because I was running EB 1.0.4 FINE for like 3-4 days and loving it... then it started resetting almost hourly. I didn't install any other apps past my initial normal set of apps.
Even CM7, seems like it is fine for a few days, then gets crazy. As long as I put a new nightly rom on it every day, it's good.
I didn't have any issues with stock though and didn't seem to have issues with CM7 for a while until lately.
The leaked GB rom causes lockups immediately out of the gate seemed hourly.
I use CM7 as my main daily driver now but I think you are on to something. We are talking about the Screen of Death right? I don't think mine ever reboots, but gets stuck at the lockscreen where the the display comes up, swiping to unlock vibrates then the phone but doesn't change screens to desktop. The buttons and click/drag widgets work even though you are looking the lockscreen.
I've never had my phone powered off in my pocket or noticed it "rebooting". Mine just has the SoD that seems to follow your pattern idea. They may be related. Stock roms may reset once it locks up, where CM7 just keeps running in its locked state.
I have a really strong sneaking suspicion that every G2X reboots but not everyone notices. Also if you naturually turn your phone off once a day or so you won't notice it perhaps or even a few days. The phone reboots pretty fast and the only way I've been noticing (except the times I see/hear it happen) is I have an uptime widget on my homescreen so it's obvious.
Same thing happened with my Droid Incredible btw...when it first came out there were all kind of random reboot issues. After a software update I would run that phone hard for 30-45 DAYS straight without a reboot.
It's annoying but I think it's just a matter of time before the G2X is the same.
I just hope that update gets here sooner than later.

I dunno. The tmobile jingle is pretty loud and I never hear it. CM7 has a silent one so possibly there but I dunno.
I use my phone pretty often and never had the suspicious that it reboots. My phone stays very cool during my usage compared to my nexus and other phones
My uptime was 4 hours since I reset it last. I'll monitor it with results. It'll be hard not to flash but I'll keep track and see how far I can keep it online.
i have not had any reboots or waking up to a dead phone ....with the only fix is a battery pull.... ever since I started.
1) my over night charging / long term charging to 100%... only on the LG charger that it came with. Only short term...maybe. less than an hour and not to a 100% charge on a non LG charger (car charger etc...)
2) I restart my G2x every morning when I take it off the LG charger..(after I take it off..I did it once while on the charger and had an issue... (there is definitely an issue related to when it charges to/ around 100% charge)
Just my 2 cents.
Pattern to my reboots - do yours have a pattern?
Hold Power and volume up simultaneously for about 10 seconds.
I've had my phone since Friday, but the only time I had the rebooting problem was this past Saturday when it rebooted four times within 15 minutes or so. Before the rebooting began, the phone had slowed down to a crawl, so I went ahead and rebooted it. After that, I sat it down and watched it reboot a few times on its own. Luckily my iPhone 4 owning co-worker was completely unaware of this issue since we tease and bicker with each other every day over Android and iOS .

Everything other than smart share, tegra zone and qik. Of course have nova and need for speed also.
Oh also have car home froze..
Maybe jumping the gun here but I tried to let mine go as long as it could without resetting it. I kept tabs on it and it was running awesome the entire time (#33 CM7).
Last time I noticed my phone on was like 17:33:xx hours. I had like 44% battery left. Next thing I know the phone is off. I tried turning it on and a battery icon flashed and turned back off.
What I am thinking is that perhaps the faulty battery driver is telling the phone that the battery is dead and preventing it from booting up. We were talking in another thread and I said something that really makes sense: If the battery driver tells the OS that there is 0% battery then it will just reboot. The battery itself may have a 50% charge left. That would explain the random reboots too (the battery driver telling the phone there is 1% left and cutting power). Maybe a hard reset semi-corrects the problem but eventually resets again due to false information.
My weirdness/powered off occurred right around 18hours. The phone could have just died too.
Almost need a Voltmeter so someone can test the battery (or however it can be tested).

Yes I know the battery driver is part of the problem as can be seen on CM7 builds but what's odd is my time varies so for a long time it would reboot every 17-20 hours, now all of a sudden it goes to 36 hours before it usually reboots. Looking at logs it doesn't appear to throw any major errors before a reboot which implies that it's a a kernel panic or low-level fault. At this point I've given up on trying to find the issue since it's been repeated over and over that T-Mo and LG are releasing an update. Might as well enjoy the phone and wait for that to come out
Amen. Just keep flashing CM nightlies and you'll never worry about it.

NEED HELP!!!! phone won't stop powering off

My inspire keeps powering off at ranodm times and has gotten worse. If its plugged into a power source it will stay on, but the second its pulled off theres a huge chance that it will just randomly power off. I know it sounds like he's being an ass, but I think he's right. I have the exact same problem. Used CoreDroid, MIUI, & HoneySense 4 & 5 and they all randomly rebooted. I noticed that after I powered back on, the battery level would be significantly different. It got progressively worse as the battery level drops. Once I get to about 23%, it just turns off when I try to do anything. I speculate that the sudden increase in battery drain from the screen getting bright & the radio draws more current than the battery can provide.
To test, I got my phone to the point that it would turn off every time I booted it. It would show the homescreen & say that it had 18% battery. I then plugged it in to the USB charger & it works fine. I'll be replacing the battery ASAP.
this happend to me on CM7 and MIUI twice and the first time i just flashed off of CM7 and it stooped and on MIUI i just rebooted the phone while connected to the charger then when it was completely booted up i unplugged it and it was fine after that but that time it was caused by letting my battery die down and then i kept booting up my phone to completely deplete the battery and did this about 20 times and it wouldn't die so i just changed out batteries and when i booted and it would immediately power down like the battery was dead so thats when i plugged it in and powered on and it worked, and i know its not the battery because i have 4 batteries

Ok then, you "know" it's not the battery - so what is your speculation? Until I get the spare batteries I ordered today, I won't be able to fully test the battery theory. I can only say with certainty that the phone doesn't shutdown while plugged in.
I could also go along with another theory - The Thunderbolt got a recent OTA update that makes them randomly shutdown. Is it possible that a piece of that code made it into the new Gingerbread ROMs? I didn't note the issue running CoreDroid 6.4 (a GB build but the last to use EXT3 instead of EXT4 and was also released before the TB OTA update), but only after upgrading to 6.5. Could it be some finicky problem with EXT4?

Actually, forget this part. I forgot I used HoneySense 4.0 with EXT3 & still had the random shutdown problem.
with it plugged in do a nandroid backup and then restore to stock then restore back with only restoring system and data
I know its not the battery because it will stay in CWM for several minutes and much longer than it does on without any random shutdowns. Going to try the return to stock and reflash method and post back.
Ok, so that I get this right, the test plan is to: flash back to stock, re-root & then reflash to a new ROM such as Coredroid 6.8? If that's what one of you are going to do, then I'll do it also so we can see if we get the same results.
Well, I actually downgraded to RUU_Ace_Cingular_US_1.80.502.3_Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M_release_166557_signed, went through Bubby's One Click and the damned phone shutdown upon boot to the first image of Bubby's. I figured MAYBE something was wrong with Bubby's One Click as I had originally used the ACE hack kit.
I reverted back to RUU_Ace_Cingular_US_1.80.502.3_Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M_release_166557_signed again & decided to use it for a minute to see if it shutdown and it DID!
There is either (A) a problem with my battery or (B) a problem with the charging system on my phone. This IS NOT a firmware/radio issue! It may be different for you, but I'm positive about my phone now. I'm going to wait until my new batteries come in on Wednesday and if it acts the same, I'll be replacing my phone under warranty. I should also note - I've never overclocked this phone, so I don't want anyone fear-mongering the N00BS about "see what overclocking will get you"!

Yes. I noticed the shutdowns started about 1½ to 2 weeks ago. It got more frequent as time went on. The phone is practically unusable now unless I leave it plugged in. I suspect that if it is indeed the battery, it may even start shutting down when plugged in since the phone will turn off if you remove the battery when it's plugged in. Just a hunch.

Well, bummer dude. I called AT&T and they said that the battery was covered under warranty & they'd be happy to send me one right out. The only problem was that they didn't have any in stock! They offered to credit my account with whatever I have to spend on replacing the battery myself. When I get the 2 batteries from Amazon & make sure they work, I'll get the credit for them applied to my account. It was only $25 for 2 batteries & charger shipped.
I called my local AT&T Corp stores to see if they had any batteries for the Inspire & they didn't either. Me thinks this widespread shortage of batteries could be indicative of a bigger problem.
WoW! Here's the feel-good part of this story....
As I posted earlier, AT&T service didn't have the battery to send me. I couldn't find a battery anywhere - I called the 2 AT&T Corp strores, BestBuy and Batteries +.
I went to the AT&T Corp store where I bought the phone & signed in for help. The girl came over to help as I was explaining to her what was happening & telling her that I wanted to take the battery out of her demo phone to make sure it was the battery. If it wasn't, then I could call service back & have them ship me a repalcement phone instead of having to wait until the batteries I ordered off of Amazon arrived.
She told me that she didn't want me to mess her floor phone up & offered to go in the back & get a phone to test with. She came back with a new battery still in the plastic. I popped it in and sure enough, it has been the battery! I told her thanks and that I felt a lot better knowing that it was indeed the battery.
She insisted that I keep the new battery since there were none to be found & she would "adjust" the phone she took the new battery from. I assume "adjust" is speak for "send it back as defective". I'm really positive about the whole experience, especially since she didn't have to do that at all. You can bet I'll be going back to that Corp store & buying from that rep when I'm ready to get my Samsung Galaxy S II!

Uh...did you read ANY of the thread or just post a reply? It seems rather obvious that there's a battery problem. Maybe you could do some of the same or similar testing we did to see if you have similar results?
The only thing I didn't say in all of this is that I got my phone on 2/14/11. So I've had it almost exactly 4 months before the problem really came up.

Batteries not charging.

Hi, so i say batteries because i already tried 3 different ones. My problem started in gingerbread when i could not charge pass 50~60%, won't even matter how much time i have it "charging", then i rooted and install the AT&T release of ICS 4.0.4, then some days later it started to won't charge pass 1% and sometimes lowers to 0% and if i disconnect turns off, and connected never charges. I have tried with different chargers also, i have tried every forum "solution", factory resetting, procedure and no luck. If i go into CWM and delete batterystats or to do anything, the phone doesn't turn off, that's weird also. I bought an external charger and charged the three batteries to full, and when i put it in the phone, android still says 1% or 0% and turns off if i disconnect.
So anybody who can help me with this, i would extremely grateful. Thanks

Hi, yes i have bbs installed and i dont see any weird wakelocks, right now is just audio, which i read is normal. Today i get a 4th new charger and cable OEM Samsung to try, but honestly i dont think it will help.
The thing that confuses me the most, is that i charged every battery I've tried in an external charger, so the battery IS actually full, but when i put it in the phone, android still says 1% or even 0%. :crying:

Charge the battery in another phone or device, if you can. That would be the only option.
To be honest it sounds like something you may have installed or run on your phone, you said it started only a few days after upgrading to ICS which I'm guessing is how long it took you to finish restoring everything from GB.
My advice is to do a complete reset to the phone using kies, let it run for a few days with the minimal stuff you need and then start adding few apps at a time and wait to see if everything runs ok.

He can't do anything to it, no battery life, it will get stuck at flash or reset (kies) and brick.
The charger doe not charge, so he can;t even do it with the usb plugged. If he had power there are lot's of thing to test, ODIN or flash.

I will try deleting, everything that is not necessary to run the OS. I'll update on what happens. Thank you.

I'm out of warranty time now.
He said he already used an external charger and it didn't help, unless all 3 of his batteries are trash it's an issue with the phone.
He also said as long as his phone stays connected it runs fine so using kies should work I guess.
If nothing works I'd say it's some type of hardware issue and that means he will have to pay for a repair or he will have to upgrade.

Just take it to a small shop that unlocks or fixes phones, something small but nice looking, with bunch of phones for sale. Not Bestbuy or something)
They would usually ship the phone to a factory for fixing, that means they ship it to Samsung facility where some dude does work on the side.
I had my main board replaced to OEM for $190 where Rogers doing same would have charged me $420.
Your problem should not cost much, but you can;t put price on how relived you would be once it's fixed)

Hi, just to make an update, i did uninstall some stuff with root uninstaller, now the battery charges!! BUT to about 15~17%, then starts to discharge itself even connected to a charger. :crying:
So I suggest to do what I said before, start from fresh and install slowly, something must have screwed with your rom.

Would you recommend to install the stock release of ICS 4.0.4 or a custom rom? if so which is the best ?Im considering using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763195. Thank you
OK, so i installed this custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763195, the battery charges to about 19%, then starts discharging itself being connected to the charger. This is driving me crazy, i have tried so may things and nothing, been a few weeks without using the phone normally. :crying:
First go fresh stock using kies to see if the issue still persists, if it does it's probably a hardware issue. If you know someone that has a device with a battery thats works fine and it fits your device ask him to try it out so you can be certain it's your device and not all of your batteries.

Ok, i did all that i could, reinstalling stock GB 2.3.5, same problem. So im pretty sure it is a hardware issue, or possibly the 3 batteries i have are trash. I will see some place in san antonio texas, that can fix it. Thanks for the help everyone. Sadly this stuff happens, but what can you do.
PS. If someone sees this and thinks that can fix my problem ill gladly discuss payment for your work. Pm me. Thanks.

Phone shutting down at random %ages (50, 60, 40+)

Hi All,
I'm facing a weird issue with my phone from more than 2 months and it has reached a frustrated level now. It used to shut off at levels like 15%, sometimes between 15-25%. But nowadays, it shuts down automatically at 40-60% and that is really unreliable. So, i wanted to check if there are other people facing the same issue or is it only my device. Please share your views, any possible solutions, possible reasons, and if applicable, similar experiences.
thanks for the info, i got my oneplus one back in 2013, hopefully it will not shutdown after a while. i have not found such problem and hope i will not in the future as i want to have the phone for at least 5 years

I had the same issue after I updated to MM and recently after latest update also. I had to do the same thing. Reason behind that was xposed was incompatible. But as I flashed everything. (/system/data too ) now its working fine

thanks so much, bought it after my nexus4 died which im still sad about because its one of my 1st real android phones after having a contract android phone.
As an update, i kept my phone on charge for straight 4-5 hours. and now it shuts down after 20-25%. Definitely an improvement. But still it's a mystery why does it show this bug in the first place.
Umm, how has no one mentioned maybe trying battery calibration!? Seems like a fairly obvious first step here to take before swapping out for a new battery.. Plug the phone in and let it charge entirely. Even at 100% in Settings > Battery it will still show "100% - Charging on AC" (or USB whatever you've got connected)
You need to wait for that to turn into "100% - Charged." Then, calibrate using any battery calibration app from the playstore, ( I use this one )
After it charges to 100% - Charged, hit "calibrate" in the app, disconnect the charger, and let it drain entirely. You might find it dying out before 0% once again, but this hopefully should have been the last time. Plug the phone in and switch it on as soon as you can while it starts to charge. Let it charge uninterruptedly to 100% - Charged, again.
Not saying this might solve it 100% but it is an option to try.

Well already tried and i may sound a bit silly, but studies have proved that battery calibration is a myth. Android automatically cleans the batterystats.bin file after every single full charge. Rest assured, i have already done that with no avail.

I had the same problem, phone was switching off @ 40% and at times @35%. Battery calibration certainly helped. No more problems now. Works well if the phone is rooted.
