Help? Requesting your phone wisdom! - General Questions and Answers

I've seen a few threads like this one, but none that helped me out completely.
My problem is, I'm in the market for a new phone. Back in the day before android, I'd just buy the newest one and be fine. But now I gotta have the right stuff!
What I'm looking for is either a sprint phone or AT&T.
I currently have an htc hero with sprint with cyanogenmod7 on it. I love it! But I'm looking to upgrade.
I want a phone I can root, gingerbread, and a big screen. the moto atrix looks awesome, but I heard it can't have a full custom rom.
So basically, I need opinions. What should I get? Reviews? Any help is welcomed!
Sent from my HERO running gingerbread. Suck on that, sprint.

i personally have a htc inspire. I think that in general most phones will have something you dislike. I would say with the inspire i pretty much love everything about it except for the battery life which is not too great on any smart phone. i will tell you that i love it for the big screen and the ability to root. i have modded it in several different ways and i have found that it has helped in terms of battery lie, speed, and functionality.

the inspire is on AT&T, right? You run gingerbread? Or cm7?

Went from a doer to a reader....

I don't know about anybody else, but when I had my captivate, I would frequent these boards and download just about any ROM I could get my hands on for the quest for a better phone.
Since getting the Inspire a week ago, it seems as though now I frequent the forums just to read. I have no ambition to have anything but the stock ROM because it is just that pleasant to use.
In fact, I really don't even think I want to root.....not really much of a need anymore other that Titanium backup and easy sideloading.
This is the first smartphone I have been truly pleased with out of the box.
If I could get the wifi hotspot to work consistently I think I would skip the root too. I am coming from a bone stock Nexus one. I really like vanilla android, but Sense does add a nice touch.

Ya What he said! Just rember to reboot everytime you change your apn. it works great and from the testing i have done and speaking with ATT they cant tell the difference..
Agreed, but
I loved this phone out of the box, but i have to tinker. It is a problem i have. I rooted and have tried just about every ROM out there. Nothing is quite as good as stock, but there are some really good ones out.
If you are happy with your phone, i say leave it. But if you want to root, this phone should be great as the devs start working with source and cooking up great ROMS and kernels.
The only tinkering I want to do now is theming. I will patiently wait for someone to deodex the stock Rom.

Evo to sensation user here

Welp, thanks to slickdeals i was able to get out of my sprint contract with no early termination fee, i jumped on the t-mobile and got the 49.99 unlimited everything deal with my girlffriend and I.
I used to love my evo on the CM7 rom, but omg the sensation is just a whole lot better in every shape and form
-Battery life
My main gripe about the evo was the ****ty battery life, I did so many roms/kernel combos to find what woudl give me the best battery but in the end i felt i had to turn off so many cool features just to make my phone last all day. The sensation last all day with wifi/gps it last so long that i don't even have to worry about forgetting to charge it at night, Before with the evo if i forgot to charge my phone i would wake up to a dead phone....
-Signal
This is mainly t-mobile coverage but i have not lost a single call int he week i have had it and i get 4g inside my house and full bars(would roam in my house with sprint) The call quality is alot better as well
-Comparing both stock roms the sensation is alot better than the EVO, i don't even really want to venture into modding it as I am getting everything i need just on stock form
Anyone else make the switch from EVO to Sensation? I am happy i finally got a new phone, it's wicked fast!!
Should i even bother trying out new roms?
Yes you should try diff roms. Some pretty good ones just have to dedicate urself to one

Was with T-Mobile for about 7 years.
Went to Sprint for EVO 3D.
Hated Sprint signal (lack thereof).
Came back to T-Mobile and got the Sensation.
T-Mobile rocks, as does the Sensation, and after having tried all of the ROMs in the dev forum for it, I highly recommend Synergy ROM. That team does top-notch work, and I've used their stuff since WinMo 6.1, and they are truly tops.
Also, they have an updater app within their ROM so upgrading to newer builds later is much less time-consuming than other ROMs. It's also super-fast, super-stable, and has some nice UI touches the other ROMs lack. Try it out.
Oh, and welcome to TMO.

Yup Sprint for some reason BLOWS in my house and evern around town i can't get decent data connection, my highest ever speedtest was like 400kb/s.... in my house i would get 50-80kb/s... The sensation on the other hand gets like 3-4500kb/s the difference is ****ing insane! really glad i made the switch and coudn't be happier!
I am going to give the synergy rom a shot, I just don't want to try it and have certain things not working, I did like that rom on the evo too
Just went from evo to sensation. I love the sensation. Better in every aspect. I don't get 4g with the evo but do with tmo. The best combo I found with with the evo was stock Rom and kernel. The sensation I will root when I get the 2.3.4 update but won't put roms on until they get one that works well with the dual core CPUs.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
I also switched from a cm7'd evo back in early July. Sensation blows the evo away in every way shape and form...
I will say it took me a while to find a decent sense ROM I was happy with since i'm waiting for CM7 for us. But i'm glad I switched everyone said Tmobile was a downgrade but has been a upgrade for me in every way in the area I live in!!

I was with sprint for 3 years, had instinct then EVO. Great service right up until the end, then it completely **** the bed, so I decided to stop giving good money for bad service. EVO was a solid phone though.
Former evo user here, too (by way of G2x and Nexus S)...
I'm on stock tmo 2.3.4, s-off and rooted of course. I've used titanium backup to de-bloat and get rid of the apps and widgets I don't need or want. I've tried a couple of roms, but at this point I'm happy with de-bloated stock. I'll probably feel differently in the future and need to breathe some fresh air into my Senny.
After using stock Android on the Nexus S and formerly on the evo, I really prefer the look of a stock sense rom over stock Android. It has some nice touches, and the included mail and messaging apps are pretty nice. I really appreciate the ability to preview up to 5 lines of an email in the mail app and the ability to send group texts and picture messages without a 3rd party app.
Of course, there are things I don't like, too. For example, I can't delete the homescreens I don't use and I can't remap the right rosie button to the browser without a mod. I also don't like how recent apps are in the notification pulldown (I know, there is a mod to remove the recent apps and many custom roms do) and that I can't customize the quick settings tab in the pulldown menu, but those are minor gripes.

Welcome aboard the Sensation train.I came from the original Evo aswell(had it for a year) although my experince with my Evo isn't as bad as yours sounds.Sure battery life wasn't the greatest, but beside that i loved my Evo,especially with the great dev community it had.
That being said,I'm definetly loving my Sensation more and i think it's a worthy upgrade.Developement isn't as huge as the Evo was/is but it's slowly getting there.I recommend you S-OFF,root and try some of the great custom Roms in the dev section.my favs are InsertCoin and AHDR by Mike1986.Good luck and enjoy your new beast...It's gonna be an awsome ride with Icecream Sandwich coming this fall. Can't wait.

I switched from the Evo to the Sensation and couldn't be happier. The phone is a huge improvement. Even stock, the battery life is awesome. T-Mobile service can be a little bit better but where I just moved to Sprint was horrible that's why I switched. My only gripe about the Sensation is its always switching from 2g to 4g. But from my understanding the area where I now live is new with 4g.

[Q] G2X Questions from a Vibrant user looking to Upgrade

Okay, a friend wants to buy my Vibrant from me and I am actually happy with it except for lack of any decent options to move from 2.2.x without losing battery life/gps (that's a different forum's discussion)..
So, I don't want to spend a LOT but I don't want a dog of a phone either. I have some specific questions on the G2X...
1) CM7/MIUI: Are they *100%* functional? As in, no "but" or "except" in the list. On the Vibrant, for example, on CM7, you get bad battery life, limping GPS and broken 911 calling. Is CM7 a viable option on the G2X for a daily driver? I am personally tired of seeing threads on various phones I've had in the past that said "100% functional" but when you get to using it, turns out it's not.
2) LG Support -vs- 3rd party. I am *not* asking if LG is going to release ICS. What I am asking is, will the dev community be dependent on LG's release to be able to properly support ICS in the future? Ie, again, on the Vibrant, CM7 is broken because Samsung never released a GB rom for the Vibrant and thus no kernel source. Is this going to be a problem on the G2X if LG doesn't release ICS?
I really don't want to spend the extra $100 it will cost me for a Sensation 4G.... I'm just not sure, basically, what to expect of 3rd party and specifically AOSP/CM7 support for the G2X in the future...
Input?
There will never be a perfect rom, ether gps, wifi, data, bluetooth, something will not work as it should, so if you want a "100% no buts, long lasting perfect phone" get one of the Motorola razr v3 or one of those flip phones from back then.
1. No ROM out for the G2x is perfect consider LG's work was far from perfect and what we have is much improved, but still a work in progress. Do we occasionally have APN issues (I never have, but as a community, yes) or sleep of deaths (Funny you mention, Sensation gets them too), yes but they're few and far between and there is work being done to fix them.
2. Because CM and a few others build straight from source, at this point it shouldn't matter if LG makes an ICS build or not. Maybe for a few things, like AD2P function, but otherwise, I'm not concerned.
I have a lot of friends who own Sensations, and I still think I made the better purchase in the G2x.
Hands up for g2x, friend have sensation, htc desirr, hd2.. 3 of us have rooted g2x with miui as last rom... all good

I came from a Vibrant and I'm so thankful I chose this phone. It feels better in the hand, it's faster, CM7 works better, the GPS works and the HDMI output is really nice. I'm iffy on buying a Samsung again after having the Vibrant.

Besides the fact that I scratched the screen 2 days after I got it, and the ICS uncertainty, I do like it a lot. I especially like the price T-Mobile is running it at since I'm on the Value plan and had to pay full price.
It does seem that the modder community for this phone is a bit smaller than the Vibrant.

Thinking of getting inspire need help?

I am thinking of buying my friends inspire off him and wondered how it is?
How is battery life?
What is the best rom? Is sense 3.5 any good? Never had a sense phone.
I noticed with the roms you have to have s-off? What is that and how is it done?
My biggest concern is the sense music player "iPod ish" in behavior?
Code:
I am thinking of buying my friends inspire off him and wondered how it is?
I really like mine. I mean, it's not some uber powerful phone that rules them all or anything, but it's higher up in the chain.
Code:
How is battery life?
Battery life is pretty decent, but it really depends on the usage. Screen brightness, playing games, how much you text/call, if you have data, gps, and sync on all the time; just regular smartphone stuff.
Code:
What is the best rom? Is sense 3.5 any good? Never had a sense phone.
There isn't really a "best rom", it's a matter of preference. You can get a stable 2.3.5 rom, such as Android Revolution, or an alpha release of an ICS rom (there are a few, just check the Android Development section.) I really enjoyed the CM7 mod because of the performance and stability; but I had an aosp ICS rom that was just wonderful, but pretty unstable. If you can deal with instability, get an ICS rom for sure.
Sense is really really nice (IMO). But again, it's all preference.
Code:
I noticed with the roms you have to have s-off? What is that and how is it done?
S-off means the phone security is off, and you can flash roms and have root. You get s-off when you root.
NOTE: I'm not a root-master by any means, so I could probably be wrong on that. Please don't take my word for it.
Code:
My biggest concern is the sense music player "iPod ish" in behavior?
You can get a third party music player. I really like PowerAmp, would recommend that, or WinAmp.
U should go to YouTube and type in inspire review and read comments. I always do that before purchasing a new phone.

Battery Life, 3+ hours with the screen on 100% like watching videos and games, 6 hours
of talk time, about 24 hours of standby time, but thats with a new battery, and taking
steps to improve battery life.
I have only tried a few ROMs, the three I like are:
Android Revolution HD - looks pretty, runs like a stock rom but tweaked
CoreDroid HD - Seams a little more tweaked in some areas, has a lot of good stuff built-in
BlackICE - Good battery life, no extra junk, CyanogenMod based
Like others have said, you are just going to have to try a few ROMs and see what you like,
I will say that with the Sense ROMS I ended up using scrips to remove a lot of stuff in my
effort to save on battery life, thats why I settled on a CyanogenMod based ROM.
Battery Life
This was my first non-Blackberry phone and I was completely disappointed. If I leave my phone at work on my desk, checking a few emails, texts, etc, I will run out of battery by the end of the day. I noticed that Facebook app was sometimes using 15% of the battery life. Deleting that helped. Also when I installed ICS the battery seems to have improved slightly.
Rom
Completely new to Roms but I installed one on here by existz. Google for AOSPX since I can't post links yet.
It's basically as close as you can get to the plain ol' ICS. Since his newest version has been coming out I've had virtually no issues. Was never really a fan of Sense. Some of the HTC stuff is nice, but I've always been a fan of less.
Phone
The phone is heavy. Which kind of gives it a sturdy feel, but it hasn't been in my experience. The added weight means if you drop it, it will hit with some force. I learned the hard way when the screen shattered completely from a 3 foot drop. Haven't had any issues since I got a gel skin for it though.
The inspire was my first android, after being an iPhone owner, I was quite happy to change.
I can't comment from experience but I like this phone a lot. I've also been using existz from and its awesome. Rooting the inspire is super easy.
The battery life isn't great, but I have chargers every where; home, car and work managing the phones resources helps, like turning off wifi, data, by, and GPS when not using them.
I don't think you can go wrong with the inspire for free or for cheap.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA
The Inspire is a nice phone to have due to its big screen. I've had it for 6 months already and i can't complain I recently rooted my phone to Rcmix3d 4.0 and it works even better
I've had mine for a little less than a year and have had no major issues. I switched from a Blackberry and this is a drastic improvement.
I wouldn't get to hung up on the ROM since it is extremely easy to root and flash a new ROM. I rooted mine a few weeks ago and flashed ICS (Redemption) to it and it works great.
It is easy to find music apps so I wouldn't stress about that either.
Battery life is decent but it does decrease over time. It may be worth investing in a new one if it is really bad.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA
I have had my inspire for almost a year and a half and its a great phone. I was slightly disappointed with the battery, but I always Cary a charger with me. It is deffanately a rugged phone. My frient bought one and stoped it down a flight of stairs without a case or screen protector and it came through with minor scraches, he also lives his inspire and after having nothing but iPhones he absolutely loves it. Oh, BTW the best Rom I have found is one called Virtuous Affinity, it is a mod of RCMix, and it is more stable. Overall the inspire is a great, reliable phone.

I say get one dude, I have a iphone for regular use and the inspire for work, has not failed me yet. The battery life is excellent atleast for me, I do not use it really heavy so I get good battery life
Get one, it's a very good phone, battery sucks, but it is all together a very sound phone. Rooting it was a snap (did my first root ever, last week, woot woot!) And I got to say that I don't know why I didn't do it sooner! Right now I am running CM7, I have flashed a few other ones, but I have come to find the stability of this ROM is phenomenal, awesome work by the Cyan Mod team! I still have a lot to learn about the full capabilities of root, but if you're looking for a starter Android, this is the way to go.

I like mine. I bought it last July and have been using it since. I shattered the digitizer in Nov but bought a replacement from ebay for about $50. The phone still works great. I have AOSPx on it and it is very smooth.

HTC G2 or LG G2x?

Hey, everyone. I just joined these forums because it seems to be a very large network. I am thinking about purchasing a smart phone. I have two options as of now, and those are the G2X and the G2. I don't care if it has a physical keyboard or if its touchscreen, as long as it works fine, I don't care. Specs-wise, I LOVE the G2X, it seems like a nice budget phone. After doing minimal research, I came across countless threads in various forums of G2X users complaining that they were getting overheated batteries, two crashes a day, random reboots, etc.
These threads were from a while ago, so I was wondering if they found a solution to this.. I know a little about rooting and custom ROM's, and I will probably do that, and get ICS on my G2x/G2. I love the looks of the G2X and how it works, etc. The only problem is I don't want it to crash. I then started looking at the G2.
I like the G2 as well, but its a VERY old phone. It still has 4G, but I am a little concerned about the hinge. The battery life seems great and all as well..
Bottom line is that both phones are very great. I prefer the G2X since it is newer, faster, and has a lot more features. Only problem is that people KEEP saying that it crashes or that LG sucks. I was thinking about picking up a used phone off of Ebay or whatever.. Can you guys tell me what you think? I REALLY want the G2x, but if its gonna crash, I will go with the G2. If the solution to the problem on the G2X is as simple as rooting the phone and installing CM9, I will go for it.. PLEASE REPLY!
Thanks in advance.
It depends on what you need. I personally like the G2X, I have no idea why. I've rooted, and installed CM9 on many G2X's. I like the screen, and it's pretty speedy. But the crashes? I can't say it's ever happened to me. It's a nice budget phone, and does daily task perfectly.
The G2 has well over 100 Roms, and has a huge Dev Team. It's been worked on by so many people. The design is classic, the speed is wonderful for a single core phone. It's a great phone, with many great things. This phone showed off how amazing HTC was (Now they suck). There's a lot of Mods, and Kernels to make battery last all day easy. I don't know what else to say, outside its a good phone.

Thanks for the reply.. Yeah, the G2X sounds like a great phone.. I just can't have the crashes happen. LG got a lot of **** for it, and seems like it caused a huge uproar. I will probably go with the G2 for now. If you don't mind, can you tell me which mods and roms are the best? Like I don't want any that aren't stable.. I am not the person looking for stuff that is the latest and greatest. As long as I can get a stable ROM of ICS on it, and prolong the battery, i'm a happy camper!
Thanks again!

Hmm... okay. After posting in other forums, I have suddenly interested in the G2X again. According to a few people, the G2X has a brilliant dev team behind it that is constantly posting new ROM's. I will only ever flash to a stable ROM. A few others said that because of all the custom ROM's coming out, it makes the G2X "bearable." Please tell me if you think the same as well.. Maybe all of the complaints I have been seeing were outdated.
G2 has insane dev go with it

I dont know about g2x; but I have used G2 and it's a great phone. It's not the fastest phone; but, it's been stable for me and got a pretty good battery life. Devs seemed great too; so, I'd say go with G2 (especially if you like physical keyboard )

I've used the G2x and I have never had any of those issues. Its incredibly fast and performs quite well. Its also does have great development going on.

Okay, I ordered a G2! It should be coming in a day or two. I know how to root it, and I also bought a 32 GB Micro SD card. I'm gonna root it this week, which seems really easy. Only problem is the I have no clue which ROM to choose. I just want a stable version of ICS.. That has a working camera and camcorder. If you guys can tell me which ROM and Kernel or whatever to use, that would be great. Btw, I know nothing about ROM's and kernels, LOL. So if you can give me links to which ones to use, I will follow them!
