My phone is firmware 2.2.1 baseband ver 1510.06.V.ED1 SCH-I510.ED1 Build Number SCH-I510.ED2 ..... is this the ed2 you're referring to? I purchased the phone the day it was released. I want to root to run wifi tethering and want to get it done before VZW turns off the free tethering. NEED it in my big truck !!! On android central rooting directions it says to enable both usb debugging and stay awake. My phone has no stay awake selection available like my original Moto Droid running 2.2.2 FRG83G had. I am thinking this is why I can not install PdaNet ? Any help before I attempt a root to run Barnacle (unless you can give me an easier wifi hack) greatly appreciated.
seeing in another thread that ed2 can't be rooted?? I want to be sure of what I'm doing before I attempt it ..
Looks like ED2.
ED2 can be rooted by using the Odin'd Kernel that gives you Root/Lagfix in the Dev forum.

Yes, that is the ED2 we are referring to in those threads. You will need to flash it back to ED1 before you are able to root.
Once rooted, you can update to ED2. It'll break your root, but flash jt's voodoo lagfix and CWM on and you will be rooted again.
Simple stuff, but I understand how it can look very confusing and overwhelming.

It is confusing that's for sure. I'm glad I didn't accept the ED2 update yesterday when I got my phone. So I will root it while its stock, then update to ED2, then we can root again by doing Root / Voodoo Lagfix / CWM Recovery install. I know what I am doing tomorrow.

IF I flash the lagfix voodoo will I still be on TouchWiz ?
Okay next question .... 1.) I assume there are instructions around to flash back to ED1 .... 2.) So I flash back, root, install Barnacle or whatever hotspot activation app someone more experienced recommends and update back to ED2 and lose my root. Will the hotspot hack app still work or will it have to be re-rooted to keep the functionality?
I was under the impression the phone would not accept updates pushed to it after it was rooted? After flashing back to ED1 to root, are there any vast improvements resident in ED2 that would make me want to go to it? What happens if they decide to push Gingerbread to the Charge ?

Root ED1 and use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092114
you'll remain rooted once you flash that on the Charge.

HELP !!
My Charge was ED2. I followed all instructions and ran the Stock Rooted ED1. It DID downgrade my phone to ED1. But I am not rooted? I do not have superuser? It is just a fully functioning (so far as I can tell) ED1 Charge. I installed Barnacle (reason for rooting) and it denies permissions saying I need superuser status .... Now what ??

Did you root it? You cant just flash ED1 on and expect it to be rooted already. You gotta run Command and adb push, and make sure adb shell is changed from $ to #. That's when you have root.

AWESOME and many thanks yyhd !!! I used Gingersnap, nothing like a 30 second automatic root !! Was no need for pushing anything via CMD using Gingersnap. Got superuser and Barnacle works terrific for wifi to the laptop. Need it in the big truck, have lappy on all day.
Next is to figure out how to flash jt's ed2 fix ... I extracted the file and it is a bin file. Odin won't see bin files, do I need to extract it then install with Odin? Thanx tons again !!!

if you are seeing a bin file you extracted it when you were not suppose to
odin will see the .tar.md5 file
hmmm .... I followed the link to his thread supplied up at the top of this thread and downloaded the 'attached file' link in that thread that was named VoodooChargeCWM-2.tar (6.27 MB, 450 views) but it unpacks with a file named recovery.bin

Right. Don't extract the .tar file, use it as is.
How do you flash a bin file? Odin does not support that file extension?

You don't flash the bin file, you flash the tar file. Does your browser autoextract the tar on dowload? If so, turn that off and re-download. If you're extracting the tar file on your own, don't, just point to it with Odin.

No... ED2 will kill root. Do not update to ED2 until root is available.
There is an ODIN'd rom available that has root for ED2 but that is it.
Right on. Thanks for the speedy reply.

When you say your ROM is rooted, I'm assuming by installing your ROM (following the directions in your thread) it will root the phone and install your ROM all in one shot? Sorry for the noob question.

This method is to root ED1 only. This is not a ROM. If you want a rooted rom see the first 2 or 3 posts in developement.

All charges are shipping with ED1 and verizon has pushed an update which is ED2 so your phone will ask you to update every 5 minutes whether you root it or not. If you update to ED2 then this root method will not work. If you root your phone and then update to ED2 it will break your root.
To stop the update pop up from occuring go into your build.prop file and change all references of ED1 to ED2 and it will stop asking you to update

Right, I understand that. My question was actually in reference to DroidXcon's ROM. He stated that his ROM is rooted. I guess what I'm asking is, by using ODIN to install his (DroidXcon's) file, it will root the phone and install his ROM as well? I'm coming from a rooted D1.

It will install his ROM, which is rooted. It will not "root" the phone as such, but you will have a rooted phone with ability to run Titanium Backup, etc., when done.
Samsung Androids (at least the Fascinate and Charge) are different from most others in that you can flash almost anything with ODIN, regardless of the condition of the phone (rooted or not, currently running or not).

Don't forget to thank me for making rooting easy for you to find and don't forget to thank and donate to DroidXcon for creating it.
The Root method is called GingerSnap and its a One click.
1. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode
2. Make sure you have the charge drivers installed on your PC
3. Download the gingersnap .zip file to your desktop
4. Double click on the gingersnap.exe file and press GO
That's it!!!! Your phone will reboot and you will be fully rooted. (permanent root)

I don't recall mine keeping root. I just flashed CWR (odin), PBJ kernel (cwr), and debloated EE4 (cwr) after anyways. No wipe is necessary.
This way you get the radio update, EE4, back to rooted, and debloated.

why are you posting the same exact questions twice?
Well sir if you MUST know, I will explain why this is posted as a stand alone question as well as at the bottom of the 'stock rooted ed1 odin' thread in development. I do this just because I am such a nice S.O.B. .... I edited the build.prop last night as was being discussed in THAT thread. When I re-booted a couple of times I was still getting the update notification and I thought it was still the ED2 trying to be pushed to the phone so I posed the question of why the build.prop edit didn't take. I then noticed that it wasn't the ED2 update at all but EE4 was being pushed to the phone. So I went back in and edited the post to refelct the same, since I was unable to delete it. Now, since this was a new question and it was likely that it would get lost at the end of a 13 page week+ old post, I also posted it as its own question in the general forum where it belongs...
FEEL BETTER NOW ??

*sigh* ... LOL ... I tried to accept the EE4 and it came back as can't download now try again later. I go into phone and try to check for updates and it says phone is up to date. I'm thinkin due to the build.prop edit and stuff not matching in phone? Baseband version still says ed1 but build says ed2 in about phone listings. It started the download then kicked out immediately and rebooted when I tried to accept ee4 push.
I was able to ODIN this back to ED1 originally. Recovered from a brick the other night (many thanx to droidXcon !!) But I have never used cwr and am a flashing noob so to speak. I am assuming the directions and all downloads are around here if I research it? I am leery of the cwm/cwr stuff as I've seen so many peeps having issues stuck in boot loops and such.
Any help/advice appreciated.
I went back into build.prop and changed everything back to ED1. Phone now shows baseband and build as ED1 again and EE4 is trying to be pushed to the phone again. Looks like I can take the OTA update now and am assuming I will lose root? I have to learn how to use cwm. I downloaded the imnuts cwm this morning, is it as simple as istalling that via ODIN since it is a tar file? Then it will just be a matter of doing the research to figure out how to install stuff via cwm to have a rooted EE4?
Edit: nope ... still wouldn't take the ee4 update. Go to accept it, phone shuts down, get the download image, yellow progress bar makes it about 20% of the way across and phone reboots.

I just upgraded my rooted ed1. The apps I had frozen are still frozen but I lost root.
Okay, I am at what I would consider a stock EE4 build. I did lose root.
So now I need to learn the easiest way to root to an EE4. I have not used cwm yet so I reckon I better learn!! Read the how to once thru. I did try just going into stock samsung recover holding volume/power/home and I did get into that.
So ... I have downloaded the imnuts cwm. Do I install that tar file and it is going to replace the stock recovery?
It now seems as though I am unable to enter stock recovery since I took the ee4? I was able to do this prior to the update. Do I proceed with flashing imnuts cwm and go from there?
Edit: I can get to stock recovery afterall
Also, I see references to some adb pushing in the cwm thread and I am ignorant of adb as well. I need to find a how to thread on all of this !! Is the adb another form of access to the phone that needs to be used in conjunction with cwm?
Edit: I flashed the New_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 file via ODIN and I got the blue 'reset' in oding and the the green 'pass' ... I go thru the process to enter recovery mode and the menu looks the same with no added options? I have Android system recovery <3e> but now it is blue .... I think I better wait at this point for guidance.

I have been attempting to flash the ROM on my Charge all day with mixed results. After much frustration, I have finally been able to flash a few ROMs, and everything works great except I have no phone signal and my phone says "Unknown Baseband." in both slots. Earlier, it said it in only one of the slots. I have attempted Altered Beast, Stock, Stock Rooted, Deodoxed, all to no avail. Is there any way to flash just the modem or radio code?
did you actually read the directions, or just willy nilly flash from AB to stock and so on and so forth?
because they aren't all compatible with each other to do that
I was initially following the directions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I went through all these directions, and after a reboot at the end, that's when it developed the problem initially.
There are only two known radios for the phone, and none of the roms flash a new radio, so even if the OP screwed up flashing his rom it shouldn't impact basebands, unless he didn't check PDA.
OP - What all did you actually try to flash? Are you sure you checked PDA in Odin, and not Modem each time?
I made certain I checked PDA each time.
Earlier yesterday afternoon, I was initially following this guide: [http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-t...and-clockworkmod-recovery-installation-guide/]until I realized it was old and didn't work w/ EE4. I had to flash my ROM back to ED1 Stock rooted in order for it to work. After that, I began following the guide in the earlier post. When my radios stopped working after that, I began flashing just about any ROM I could get my hands on, just to see if I get could get my radios back, including the aforementioned Stock, Stock rooted, Deodexed, Altered Beast, Debloated, etc. I eventually had to so the CWM repair ROM [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486] and flashed to Altered Beast and then to Stock ED2 after that, which is where I think I'm sitting right now.

There are several people experiencing an unknown baseband, most of the time its from attempting to use cwm prior to v3 to flash a recovery, then fixing the soft brick and now we have a "unknown baseband"
This happened to me as well. Any way to fix?
Anyone try flashing the official EE4 update.zip with stock recovery? Since that is the only file we have that has modem parts, maybe it can recover your basebands.

Do you know where I can locate that .zip? I am in the same boat and would be willing to try.
My experience with unknown baseband and ee4 update is that it wouldn't update to ee4 because it couldn't find an ltemodem to patch. I don't think the update is just going to insert the baseband because it can't find the original.
I'm back on my Incredible in the meantime. Can't believe how small it is!

In the process of doing this, I bricked my phone even more. When I try to reboot the phone, it says:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
-- bootmode=7 from cmdline...
-- Movi_check Start..!!
checksum confirmation need_checksum[0]
Not need checksum confirmation
-- Movi_check already executed!!...
-- movi_checking done!...
#MANUAL MODE #

Then it boots into recovery. Obviously, this is a good example of why not to root your device unless you have a REALLY good understanding of what you're doing.

Well just now a FULL ODIN ED2 package was posted at rootzwiki http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?481-LEAK-STOCK-ED2-Droid-Charge-FULL-ODIN!&p=5957#post5957

FLASH KERNEL WITH ODIN --
After phone has booted
Download Root explorer from market & locate and delete:
/system/xbin/su
/system/xbin/busybox
/system/app/Superuser
go to settings>Privacy
-- DELETE USER DATA ALONG WITH SD CARD DATA --
DO IT, reboot. NO ROOT PURE STOCK.
When you factory reset the root wont be there either. Thank god.

Not to nitpick but I'm looking at the 'gtg's stock uxkg3 rom with root removed' and noticed that it has the de-odexed apk's and framework files. I'm pretty sure that the Rogers Infuses, out of the box, have odex files. Would the lack of odex files be enough reason for Rogers not to service an Infuse with the reason being that some of the system files have been modified?
Also, not a big deal, but the updater-script still has references to 'su' and 'busybox' and symlinks to bin files that do not exist (ex. mkdir).
It would be awesome if gtg could provide the original framework. Or anyone with a rogers phone.

ok guys heres what im gonna do. im gonna download the odin version of the uxkg3 root package. pull all the apps and framework from there. and drop them into the rom package on here. i need someone to test once im done.
The odin version, are you able to remove the odex or whatever its called from it? And I'd be willing to test it when i get back home. Around 6-7pm est time. I take it around 5-6pm for your time Jordan.

ok. flashed. works perfect. no more calls in updater script to su, busybox, and no symlinks. i suggest you flash this update if u want complete stock, and want to return your phone or such. just follow the same steps and you should be good.

OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

But is flashing a new kernel the only option for rooting? If it were my phone I would flash away cause I'm a flashaholic but she don't want to lose all her info and have to restore it all. The only reason she wants root is to freeze those very annoying att bloatware apps that aggravate everyone by running all the time and slowing everything down...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.
