I recently decided that I'd like different sounds for my various app notifications, but found that regardless as to what I set them to, they always use the default notification sound. To clarify, my apps ( gmail, twitter, facebook, etc ) all allow me to change their sounds and the settings stay put, they just simply don't use the selected sound, but rather player the default instead.
I've tried using apps that help with setting sounds, didn't help. I tried only using default system sounds vs the ones I've added via Zedge, didn't matter. I've been searching on XDA and Google, but no luck. I'm currently running v3 of the Breakneck rom on an LG Vortex and would much appreciate any help.
Update
I flashed my phone to v4 of the breakneck rom this morning, so took the opportunity to see which app(s) was causing the problem. The fresh rom prior to installing any new apps does work with a default system wide sound and different individual app sounds. I didn't encounter the problem I mentioned above until I used Zedge to set my notification sound to one of the ones that I had downloaded through it. If I uninstall Zedge and go back to using default system sounds, they work again properly. But if I use one of the downloaded sound files, even with Zedge still uninstalled, it no longer allows individual apps to have their own sounds. I even tried converting the sound files over to OGG and moving them to the system notification folder, no dice. Any ideas?
If this problem still exist in the V2.4 of the Zedge app please let us know by using "feedback" in the app.
Then we will let one of our developers to take a look at it.
(I'm a Community Manager in Zedge by the way)
Thanks!
Thank you for the reply, but I'm not 100% sure that it's Zedge's fault. A friend of mine has the same phone and is running a stock rom AND is having no trouble with his Zedge sounds. I however, am having trouble with Zedge on my custom rommed phone. I've also sent a tweet over to the rom developer to see if he'd check things on his end.
Also, I am already running v.2.4.

I love the new Weapon 2.6, but it doesn't find any ringtones on my phone. No matter where I place them, the only option I have for ringtones and notifications is "silent." I searched the forums and found one other person asked this same question a couple of months ago, but received no response. So I figured I would try asking it again. For anyone using Weapon 2.6, where are your ringtone files located so that they show up in the list of choices? Thanks!
System/Media/Audio
You should find the folders within that file path. I'm on weapon 2.6 and all my notifications & ringtones are there.
Hope that helps.

You can also make a folder on your sdcard called media, and then put stuff under there. (So it'd be /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones.) That's the setup I use. I switch roms a lot, and it's a lot easier than constantly pushing my custom ringtones to the system partition every time I install a new rom.
Thanks for both of your suggestions. I could see the ringtones in the System/media/audio directory. And I could move them to the sdcard and see them in there. But when I would try to change my ringtone or notification sound, there was nothing listed except "silent." I fixed the permissions through recovery, and they now show up in my settings. Must have forgotten to do that when I originally flashed. But thanks to both of you for letting me know that I was completely crazy or completely stupid.
Hi Guys,
First post, a friend at work referred me here, thus far i've found the forums very useful.
One thing i cant find an answer for through xda or google is the ability to distinguish notification alerts.
Relevant to my query, I am using;
> HTC One XL (Telstra) Unlocked & rooted, STOCK ROM.
- Apex Pro Launcher
- Combination of XD widgets & Android Pro Widgets.
- Quick Profiles Pro
Whilst quick profiles pro really does the job i want it to do, i need to be able to identify different alerts;
- Email / Gmail
- SMS
Facebook would also be nice to set apart, but if it hasnt been thought of yet, the ability to differentiate between an sms alert tone and an email alert tone seems as though it should be a fairly remedial task, im wondering why in finding it so hard to find something to do this?

In settings go to sounds, then notification and change the sound. This will be for emails. Open the sms app and open settings. Go to notification. This will be your sms sound.

Lol i cant beleive it was that simple, thanks so much.
On the topic, im not a fan of my tones list being cluttered up with stock tones i'll never use.
I have mounted R/W in root explorer to move the default tones to my sd card and back them up on my pc.
In their place i have loaded my custom mp3s, but when i try to assign them they do not appear;
- system/media/audio/notifications
- system/media/audio/ringtones
All threads i have viewed say to load customs on sdcard to;
- sdcard/media/audio/notifications
- sdcard/media/audioringtones
Neither ringtones or notifications load from this location.
I moved my ringtones back to;
- sdcard/ringtones
They appear in my list.
I tried this with notification tones;
- sdcard/notifications
They still dont appear when i try to assign them.
Same phone, unlocked & rooted HTC One XL Stock ROM Telstra.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sorted.
The files werent visible thru notifications settings when i put them there.
When i had a look again, they were mysteriously there.
I notice this happens when i sync my music for music player.
My playlists are empty for a number of hours before eventually just appearing.
Why is that?
I am coming from the SGS Fasciante, so am quite familiar with all this flashing and stuff...but I just (FINALLY) got my upgrade to the SGS3 and I wanted to make sure of a few things before i go messing around.
I have rooted and unlocked and installed recovery...root works fine..even AdFree app works...
Using pure stock rooted..no rom has been flashed...Android 4.0.4 IMM76D.I535VRALHE
I remember reading somewhere that this phone now has some checker built in that will give an error that "Unauthorized software detected"...or something...if you modify the os too much...
Is this still true...? I want to remove or freeze the crap apps that come with the phone, but don't want it lock up the phone on me...Is it better to delete the app, or use a freeze program...any suggestions?
What about OTA updates with this phone?...do I need to be concerned about that... will it one day just deiced to update and i loose root etc....
Also, I flashed the DSP Manager.zip i used on my Fasciante..and it is working..most of the time...doesn't seem to affect Amazon MP3 like it did on the Fascinate...DSP Manger also won't stay on a lot...keeps reverting to stock sound quality....keep having to start stop player app and tweak DSP app to get it to tun back on...any ideas...?

You should only get the "unauthorized software detected" message if you attempt to flash a custom kernel (Or ROM that contains a custom kernel) when you haven't unlocked your bootloader, the latest version of ez unlock (1.4 I believe) will tell you it unlocked the bootloader and flashed a insecure aboot. Check out this guide and this guide for apps that are safe to remove or freeze on your phone (If you think you may need the app again sometime just freeze it rather then remove it that way if you need it latter you can unfreeze), also pay careful attention to the guides and make a backup before removing or freezing any apps. I personally use Titanium Backup for any application freezing or removing needs. If your running the stock Verizon ROM and your rooted there is always the possibility of them pushing an update along that breaks root (Fortunately you can restore a CWM or TWRP backup when you did have root, or use odin to restore the factory image). Further more, an awesome app by the name of OTA RootKeeper allows you to keep root even if Verizon issues a OTA update. I'm guessing DSP manager and Samsung's music player equalizer options may be interfearing with eachother causing the issues you mentioned. Technically this version of DSP Manager is for the international GS3 but it should still work on our Verizon version (As always make a backup before flashing anything). Plus not all parts of the Fascinate DSP Manager zip may be compatible with the Verizon Galaxy S3 once again causing you random problems. Well hope I helped let me know if you need more help .
About DSP manager...work fine in all players..including the Samsung player for flac files..but not for mp3...I did find winamp player works perfectly though with dsp manger I flashed..will have to try the one u linked to...
Edit: no change..appears to be the same zip...o well..winamp player for me...not as nice as the Samsung one...but...yea..want the better sound...

I agree, while the Samsung music player has a couple cool features and awesome UI most of the features seem kinda gimmicky like the sound alive settings, like you said I personally would stick with winamp, which is still a realy soild music player and the great sound and customization of DSP manager.

Yea..now that i can transfer my media player to the SGS3, my Fasicante officially gets retired..
There is only 2 other things with he SGS3 I am annoyed with at the moment:
Email and Gmail apps are ugly white versions...(special Touchwiz version I assume)I am not sure if there are blacked out versions of these for stock...I tried adding in the Email and Gmail .apk I was using from ICS for the Fasciante...but it wouldn't work....may just need to find another app from the market...
There doesn't seem to be any settings to adjust the toggles on the notification drop-down....don't need some, and want to add brightness toggle.......

You should considering rooting your phone and installing CM 10 or AOKP they both have customizable quick toggles and inverted gapps for gmail and you can get regular inverted email too.

flash a custom touchwiz rom such as beans and there should be a quick panel settings in your app drawer to adjust the toggles. Same thing for aosp...also you know where there is a guide wink wink if you need any instructions for rooting,unlocking, and flashing!

I probably will...eventually...but I want to keep stock as much as possible...maybe once the final release of JB for this device is out...and the bugs are worked out.
Use titanium backup to freeze ur apps... Great program, should be mandatory for root users and ROM flashers (imo) . As far as what to freeze, general rule of thumb, dont freeze anything that starts with com or has andy the android as the icon. Be careful freezing any launchers and definately make a nandroid backup prior to any freezing.
Tapped² from my I5³5
I was looking for this thread yesterday. I went looking for a comprehensive list that I knew existed but couldn't find my way back to this lol. This was in the Jellywiz thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31545527
Not my list, and I haven't tried everything to see what kind of results happen on what so play at your own risk and I would suggest backing up every single app you remove.
Hi guys. I recently flashed my LG G2X (LGP999) from Wind's Froyo (2.2) to CM 10 using ClockworkMod and ROM Manager. Everything was going great till I noticed something odd. All of the default ringtones in this version of CyanogenMod, as well as my custom ringtones, are repeated in the ringtone menu. The same thing is happening with notification ringtones. Since I'm a new user, I can't post images from external links, so please bear with me.
Ringtones:

Notifications:

And I have another problem. Some of the default system sounds show up in Apollo, and I can't delete them from the app. Is there any way to remove stuff like camera_click.ogg from Apollo? On Wind's proprietary OS I was able to delete stuff from the Music app...
imgur.com/fk3sh
Imgur album (all the screenshots): imgur.com/a/YzvgT#0
The default ringtones and notifications don't show up in the media or audio folders, and I tried deleting them from the audio folder via ASTRO File Manager but they're still in the ringtones menu... what gives? Why can't I delete them?
Another mini problem: the screen flickers a lot when I go into the gallery to view pictures, but other than that everything has been much smoother and better than 2.2.
If you could tell me how to delete the default ringtones and notifications (because I don't use them), as well as how to remove the default system sounds from Apollo, I'd be very grateful. Thank you.
I have the same problem. But mine is in CM9 and CM10

Hi,
I rebooted my Oneplus One yesterday and have strange issues since then:
- the ringtone and notification sounds reverted back to default...
I was using a custom ringtone located in sdcar/ringtones and a custom notification sound located in sdcard/notifications.
Both files are still present in those directories, but aren't listed into the available ringtones/notifications settings.
- the gallery app only shows pictures taken since the reboot. These files as well as the older pictures are still into sdcard/DCIM/Camera
Thanks in advance.
My Opo is rooted and running official CM12s.
Me too!
I randomly had the exact same problem, reverted to an older twrp backup and when I rebooted it was fine (ringtones working, and pictures listed) until my apps started updating. Once all the updates were done Gallery and Google photos didnt display any photos (but if i took a quick picture then and there theyd display that, just not any older photos).
And the notification sounds were broken.
I have found workarounds.
For the pictures, download the app quickpic, its sort of a replacement for Gallery. It is essentially the same just laid out differently, but most importantly it will pick up all your old pictures.
For the ringtone it seems like the folder moved or something...
I placed my custom files (.ogg files) in /system/media/audio/notifications/
They then show up when trying to select them in settings.
And you can now choose a custom ringtone.
But for some reason the notification sound doesnt work. You can see the filenames listed in the notification sound list, but when you select it no sound plays (and if you do select the custom sound as your notification sound it wont play when you get an notifications.
There's a reason why they chose Oxygen as the OS for the OnePlus Two.
EDIT
I installed Zedge which is just another program to manage ringtones and notification sounds.
So now when you go to change a notification sound in an app or in settings or something it will give you the option to open with zedge.
You can use whatever third party ringtone/notification program and it would work probably.
so tl;dr
get a third party app for pictures and videos such as quickpic
get a third party app for ringtones/notification sounds such as zedge
