[Q] After T-Mobile OTA [failed] update, internal phone space low - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

This morning (2011may27-0700 PST [pacific]), I received my 1st ever update from T-Mobile for my Galaxy S 4G. It told me "Congratulations," you have an update! or something like that, then told me I wouldn't be able to use the phone for 10min, I said OK, it rebooted into a white screen, applied an update (with progress bar), and said "Update is Failed", and rebooted. Upon reboot, I have a "low on space" notification and it stays up there in the menu bar, above. I don't have any extra apps, and don't know what to do.
Can someone walk me through finding where the space is suddenly used up? I'm really going to need some hand-holding on this. Thanks
Can someone tell me how to apply the update? If I go to "Settings" -> "Software update", it says "no firmware". As far as PC's go, I use Linux, btw
Has this update worked for others? What does it update you to? 2.3.x ?
I originally posted this in the wrong forum (Vibrant forum... my old phone), and I think the answer to #3 is that it updates to KD1. Thanks, ahead of time.

check that out. old news.
sorry the update failed, you'll need to look around the forums for a fix. if you tried the update while rooted and/or having messed with fota files or the system in any other way, it would explain why it failed.
good luck.
there are two other threads in here about the same thing.

I'm very interested in this comment as well, the exact same thing happen to me, I figured I couldn't download the update because I rooted my phone and have titanium backup, I moved what I can to sd and deleted what I thought was safe from internal. yet the space seems to still show as used on the internal.

Thanks, nodrogkam
I checked your link that confirms my comment (that this is an update to KD1), and am currently trying to install the Mini Kies, from the T-Mobile link. What is a fota file? Also, when you said to look around the forums for a fix, were you referring to my #1 issue (low on internal storage), or for my #2 issue (how to install on Linux)? Either way, it sounds promising that the answer is here somewhere. Thanks

Kies no-go on wine
just in case anyone else wanted to try, Samsung's Windows Kies software is a no-go on the latest WINE. It was worth a shot.
I'm still curious how to find out where that space got used up, and exactly what space it is referring to, though.

FOTA files means : for over the air files. this was a chunk of memory reserved for such an update (KD1 in this case). Its why the phone had such little free internal memory.
KD1 actually resolves that issue by reducing FOTA file size.
Your low memory is probably because the FOTA space was taken up and probably additional space taken up to back up apps etc. But since the update failed, the files are just sitting there instead of being erased.
As far as i know, Kies only works with Windows. Though there's probably a workaround if you want to use it on Linux.

how do you clear the fota files

If you did the fota fix most likely the update replaced the fota files that were removed to give you room on the internal rom
Modded gingerbread theme
Whitehawks kd1 deodexed with modded green dialer, modded pull down menu (favorite color is green and favorite football team greenbay packers)

FOTA location?
cool, thanks for the info! WHOOO-HOOOOOOO! Deleting the /data/fota/* files brings back LOADS of space. THANKS!
That was my biggest concern. I'd post a howto on how I did it, but I'm not sure if my actions were the wisest! I may be a stranger to Android, but not to *nix.
Thanks again

reboot and i think u'll get back to the space before the update fail, but less space than you see now.
unless you followed or did the same procedure as the ones listed in the developer section of this forum.

Im curious ... and I hope its cleared up.
I know im not the only one that deleted the FOTA files and am of course rooted..... but how do I go about doing this update if I go on my mac and tried using kies mini and says not supported! Also do I replace the original FOTA files and hope that it may do the update?
IF someone has a way to resolve and/or walkthrough I know we would all appreciate it!
Thanks!!!

trying through VBox, to install updates
yeah, curious here, too. I'm in the process of installing windows on a VM, using VBox (Sun/Oracle's Virtual Box). I'm just wading through the several hour interactive process of apply updates just to be able to apply other updates, and rebooting after almost each one. I'll post here if I have any luck, and how I did it.

Missing apps after HERO upgrade

I was wondering if anyone else was running into the problem I'm having, and if it has been covered before and I missed it in the search box earlier I apologize. I just recently tried to upgrade to JACHero2.6 and my market app (most important) along with several others are missing. The apps are automatically installed on all my other roms, it is only with hero that I end up missing alot of apps. I have a correctly formatted SD card and I did a wipe before I installed this and tried the whole process twice. If I am forgetting to do something special prior to installation or afterwards please let me know!!

you may have gotten a bad download. try redownloading it again. do you have 3 partition (fat32 ext2/3 linux-swap) if not i suggest that for jac's 2.63 also make sure you check file extensions in recovery screen. hopefully this helps
Yes I have my card that exact format and I tried using the filesystem checker in the recovery screen it said filesystem check was complete!! I'll try doing the whole process over again but I'm not sure how that would help, and it is sad too this is the best damn hero rom i've tested to date, its fast as hell!! If it weren't for my apps not being here i wouldn't be planning on a future rom update in the near future or until some big release happens.
make sure you always check md5 sum of all your hero build download
you could of had a damaged downloaded rom and this could affect your rom.
Just tried to download a fresh copy of the rom, checked to make sure my sd card was working properly, wiped and re-flashed yet my market app and the same apps I was missing before is still missing. It should be included that apps on my ext2 were coming back like they should be just not all of them, and not a few apps that I thought should be included with the rom. Is there anything I should check that I may not have yet?
I would use Root Explorer to check if the apk files are still under system/sd/app if they aren't... well, there's no way you're going to see them again unless you re-install them. You can also look under system/sd/app_s if that's there. Other than that, if you can't find it, it's not there. (If you know the exact name of the file or at least part of the apk file name, under terminal type: find "file name" (w/o quotes ofc)
You can add wildcards (*) if you don't know the exact name of the file. If the apk file is still there... well... let's just see if its there first.
I checked using terminal, I typed "vending.apk" and tried to check the dir's you specified for the apks. If they are there I can't find them, although I am a bit limited as terminal is the only app that came loaded with which to check for files. If the apk files are indeed not there then why would the apps install on their own without a problem on any other build but hero??? I must be doing something wrong right? I am open to any suggestions at this point, even using a different rom to check for something, my goal is to have this rom flashed with my apps working soon!
heres the vending.apk from jachero 2.63 you can try and adb push it to /system/sd/app_s and see if it works.
Thanks, I'll try pushing that over but I'm still worried about the rest of the apps I'm missing. Would there be anything else I could try to make it possibly fix all the missing apps? What could be causing this problem in the first place? I did notice that my sd card has an ext2 rather than ext3 part, will that cause all of this to happen? I'm still pretty lost on this. I tried going back to another rom just to make sure my apps would still all pull up correctly, and they did so it has to be something related to this most recent build of jachero, or something
welcome to the club my friend (-;
i have the exact same problem and noone was able to help me yet.
It must have something to do with Jacs apps2sd method. i read some tweets between him and cyanogen that it might be a little 'rough'.
however - it's always the same apps that are missing, in my case it's (badly enough) launcher.apk AND rosie.apk which pretty much means that i can't solve it.
i also tried everything i could with ADB - without luck. I somehow have the feeling that theres something staying on the phone even when wiping and formatting.... I'll check this through ADB this evening.
look @ my recent posts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search_rop.php?searchid=25731882
for previous moaning from myself ( (-; ) and discussion with others in the JACthread. Basically the last 15 - 20 posts are about nothing else (-;
I will also do some logcating today - i've already seen the errors through install (rosie.apk couldn't be parsed etc) but i forgot to save it (and the command promt only saves 100 lines or something)

I have used AndExplorer and put the APK's in the sys/sd/apps and it all worked fine. Very easy to do if you don't know how to push, just reboot after.

You don't need to have the myfaves app for you myfave minutes to work. You are still calling them for free regardless if you have the icon or myfave compatible phone or whatever. If you want to manage the people just log on to mytmobile.com and make the changes there.
Hmmmmmmmm . I never realized thanks for pointing that out TurboTsi.

open up your copy of the build and check in system/app_s to see if the .apks are even in the build. if pushing the vending.apk works i dont mind posting the other ones you are missing if you want to pm me or something
Just tried opening the update.zip file and verified that all the apks are there. Which makes me wonder what exactly is up. Im thinking it could be an apps2sd issue, like what was said above. I didnt have this problem with older hero roms that i can remember. TBH I could try pushing apps with adb but that wouldn't bring back my other 3rd party apps floating in ext2 limbo. So I'm out of ideas ;(

try going to the recovery console and entering upgrade_fs and that will change your ext2 to ext3 and see if wiping and flashing change anything. also if you have root explorer you can check your /system/sd folder to see if all of your third party apps are there
Just tried upgrade_fs and it gave me a "unable to allocate block" I noticed there is little if any room left on the ext2 partition. Would that cause all of this? If not would it be worth a shot to resize the partition and give it more space from my fat32 then try to upgrade wipe reload again?
If you're out of ideas, then I would attempt to resize first (but backup your fat32 first) and then see if that solves it, if not, then I would format, wipe, and update...
but are you sure those 3rd party apps are not there? Try using Root Explorer to determine if the 3rd Party Apps are there, if they are, just pull them to your sdcard and try installing them again with ASTRO or something like that.

Tiny Internal Application Storage?

I just got a Galaxy S 4G and I see it only comes with 256MB of internal application storage?!
That's puny.
Am I supposed to just install applications to the SD Card? Even doing that, I'll probably quickly fill up the internal storage with apps that can't be moved to the SD Card.
Is there some sort of workaround here (that I can use on stock rom)?
Search "FOTA fix sgs4g".

I was working on the link2sd solution, but this might be a better short term solution.
Will this fota fix possibly prevent the next OTA from going right or have any other possible ramifications?

If you fill the space that is reserved for the fota files, it will.
But if you still have the space, all you have to do is delete the replacement files, reboot, and the original ones will reappear.
However, whenever there is an update, there is likely to be a flashable ROM quickly following.

Well the whole point of clearing out the fota space is to use the space, so anyone looking to do this wouldn't have room for the real fota files to come back in order to get an OTA.
Point taken about a flashable ROM though perhaps that would need to recreate the fota files to work or might recreate them anyhow and then what?
Seems a bit risky to use try to use up space that the system has reserved.
Not sure the link2sd solution is much better. I'll have to read up on that one a bit more.
Apparently the fota files weren't that important. In the new update they're 35mb a piece, totaling 70mb in all. Worse comes to worse, titanium backup, delete a few apps, reinstall fota files and update.
I did the fota fix and removed all the bloatware and both efile and super manager say I have 430mb of app storage space. Just thought id throw that out there
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
My bad. It was titanium backup and efile.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
So basically a soon as I get that new update (will I get it automatically if rooted?), I'll have another 180mb to work with due to the smaller fota files?
You will not get the update automatically, rooted or not. You have to update through kies mini. It will not let you update through kies mini if you are rooted. I just flashed the "deodexed KD1" from whitehawkx, then reapplied the fota files to free up the other 70mb. I wanted the most free space I could get... but that's just me.
From my understanding and im a noob the update will be sent in small updates or you have the option to get the new samsung kies and do it all at once.please correct if wrong. but I also would like to know what is the value of these "fota files". And im not sure the new update will fix this. the update is mainly a fix for small bugs on the phone for a list of what it will fix check out t-mobile support they have it posted in the galaxy s 4g forum. Hope this helps.

I have a Vibrant too, so I'm somewhat familiar with the process.
So, wait, there's that froyo maintenance update currently, right? That's the one that greatly reduces the size of the fota files? Why does the tmobile release say that people will get it gradually. Is that an OTA update? Will I get that if rooted?
Is that available to me right now in Kies mini if I plug in my phone?
Can I unroot first with superoneclick? If not, how do I get the update?
I am pretty sure even if u unroot they can still tell u were rooted. Not a 100% sure though. Also yea if you were not rooted you would receive the update OTA. I am rooted and still have KB5.

check the forums for any update. If you are into modding your phone, Im sure you will frequent this forum. the community will more than likely get an update or leak pretty quick.
Just did the update via ODIN.
Seems to have gotten me an extra 90MB or so of internal storage. Was hoping it might have been a little bigger bump than that, but I guess I'll have to resort to alternate methods when I need it. I'm at 180MB now.
Need to figure out how to re-root now. I saw some people posted it didn't work via superoneclick.
EDIT: superoneclick seems to have re-rooted me just fine.
FWIW, on KB1 deleting Fota files opened up 250Mb of space...
Once I flashed the deodexed (stock) KD1, deleting Fota files only opened up 70Mb...
I guess that means on KD1 the Fota files were reduced by roughly 180Mb, so perhaps just upgrading to KD1 might open enough space for many...

[Q] Bootlooping icbinb 2.3.7

Abstact: my GS4G is bootlooping between the Samsung and T-Mobile splash screens after following this tutorial on removing 'gremlins' and flashing icbinb 2.3.7 for absolutely no discernible reason.
First off, I'd like to apologize for having made this thread in this area vs posting about this in the proper thread. It looks like somewhere along the lines, morons forced the staff to enact a rule about not being able to post to dev forums with less than ten posts, effectively ruining things for those of us who have made accounts but never post because we're usually able to fix our problems by reading around etc prior to having to post about it.
Either way, I decided to do my tri-yearly phone wipe and try to update today thinking there may have been some new developments for the GS4G since I last looked. Having flashed Samsung's (leaked? grey area official?) GB rom it unrooted my phone and I needed to fix that. Luckily I ran across a supposed 1-click root and general phone junk clean up tool; as listed above. After running that I was given CwM voodoo lagfix 3.0.2.8x. I made a back up of the freshly formatted phone and proceeded to flash icbinb 2.3.7.
Right after it started to bootloop at which point I began looking around the thread for any advice. Obviously, people were saying to wipe everything but to my knowledge I'd done so prior yet even after wiping the cache, dalvick cache, and fixing permissions I was still left with a bootloop of the Samsung and T-Mobile splash screens. Formatting /cache, /data, /system, and /sdcard only caused further problems (big surprise!). There hit a point at which CmW was giving me all kinds of errors claiming it couldn't find certain directories every time I gave it a command (I'd elaborate on exactly what the errors were but I was focused on trying other methods and it's been a few hours since I've seen the exact messages). After becoming completely inoperable (to the point of the icbinb 2.3.7 claiming it didn't know what phone I had; a problem stemming from formatting /system or so the thread made it seem) I was forced to run the Odin 1-click process again just to be able to do much of anything.
There was one point at which the phone booted to a home screen yet it immediately started yelling at me about the USB not being assigned (IIRC?) every time I went to do much of anything and literally the entire settings screen consisted of sliding bars (like volume or brightness controls) which had no effect from what I could tell.
After that I attempted four more installations of icbinb 2.3.7 (with many forcing me to run Odin to revert back to some functional state) trying different ways of wiping the cache etc before and after, etc with no luck.
At no point were there problems with anything I attempted to do with my phone untill I flashed icbinb 2.3.7 so I am completely baffled. It's even more frustrating that icbinb is said to be the most stable ROM for the GS4G and virtually nobody has complained of bootlooping or any real problems with flashing it.
Again, I'm sorry for posting this here but there isn't another place I feel it would be allowed but if there's a better place by all means please move it.
Thank you to anyone who is able to help me.
Download ICBINB again. Make sure that you compare the filesize of your downloaded file to the one on the download page:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/teamacid/files/roms/icbinb/
Try following my GB starter pack guide from step 6
Do not download the fb_kc1... File since you won't need it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
Install ICBINB again. Post back here if you need more help.
I'm on my fifth ICBINB download and they've all been 120mb (122,462kb) instead of 125.4mb
I've never seen anything like this before what are people paying sourceforge for ugh
thanks for the quick reply though and I'm gonna keep downloading till I get it right (unless you feel like mirroring it to some place that allows for full downloads)
should I assume "11) Flash the GB rom you put on your sd card" means flash ICBINB
yeah I tried ten times and it's been the same file size every time. I even tried changing the file name and save location but that didn't matter. this is pretty infuriating.

Download winMD5Sum
http://www.nullriver.com/downloads/Install-winMd5Sum.exe
It'll let you verify that the file you downloaded is exactly the same as the one that's hosted on sf. I'm about to run the md5sum checker on the file to verify it's the same.
EDIT
Once you have downloaded and installed the program on your computer, right click on the icbinb zip file, select Send To > winmd5sum
It'll have a box called compare, paste this in there:
Code:

If your download is good it'll say "MD5 Check Sums are the same" after you click compare.

I had this problem with ICBNB today switching from Val-Black i decided to try thomas gremlin remover and ended up bootlooped then tried Fb's Starter pack and after flashing the rom said it got installed but it was a mix of both of them so did GB Starter pack again but before flashing ICBNB i flashed bhunds latest rc1.1 kernel rebooted back into recovery adn then flashed with manually formatting /system /data and /cache with no problems
Try that it worked good for me hopefully for you too ive tried it twice in a row right now

i told dsex day it came out about the issue, glad i got it right
also Raver I formatted the /system /data and /cache manually on Val-Black and dsp is working flawlessly for me now thanks for everything!
yeah I think I may have actually gotten it! I managed to get /system wiped after fighting with "format_volume failed to unmount "/system"" for a bit
after doing a quick install it booted and gave me the proper (or at least new to me) boot animation and I'm letting it sit for a bit at the android touch screen.
it seems like this may be solved but I'm gonna give it a little bit just to be sure.
thanks so much everyone, I mean that from the bottom of my heart
looks like things are working very well. again sorry for having to post about it here.

Good to hear everything is cool now....the rom is awesome
Thank's aren't asked for but aappreciated

[Q] ASUS Memo Pad HD 7 (ME173x) can't upgrade

So I got my self this nice tab ASUS Memo Pad HD 7 (ME173x), rooted the thing as soon as I got home, removed some bloatware and then after few hours a notification for an OTA upgrade hits me (wich ofc was not available manually).
You are obviously reading this 'couse the upgrade fails, just a broken droid when it tries to flash the upgrade.
Maybe the upgrade is like of a patch (it's just 56MB) and it fails me because I have removed some (well lots actually...) of those nice installed apps?
What to do? Wait for a maybe more substantial upgrade? Look for a full factory image? Just swap the tablet with a new one claiming that "OMG doesn-t-work" (hmm and what after I root the new one, de-bloat, and an other new upgrade hits the air...).
Thanks!
I found the upgrade, wich is cached in /cache/dlpkgfile (and it's a *.zip).
If I browse it I found a lot of apps patches in system/app : would it be safe to erase just those I've disinstalled, re-zip and try to upgrade?
Well the whole upgrade has a checksum, which is not easy to recreate as the script makepatch works (I guess) with a full source / dest combo. Nor it would be simply to re-install some of the apps from market as the versions could mismatch with those provided in the base.
This means that we should need backups from a original un-upgraded device, and see if that would get through the patching.
A factory image would be useful actually.
Hey, ea_.
Sorry that I can't really help you with the update or anything, but I was wondering if you could upload that dlpkg file somewhere for me.
A friend of mine has a MeMO Pad 7 HD here, and he messed up when (improperly) installing Chainfire 3D, rendering the device soft-bricked. Now it's all cool, because I can still access the system and manipulate it, and it's rooted on top of that, so I'm still in control. The problem is as you've mentioned: those idiots at ASUS don't have any upgrade/recovery images posted, so while I am capable of restoring the stupid thing, there's absolutely nowhere [that I can see] to restore FROM!
I was hoping to find someone with a tablet like this, who could share his system files or a recovery image of some sort from which I could recover the device...

Too bad: I gave back my unit yesterday for a replacement (so I could back-up the whole thing as stock) but my shop was out of stock.
They say maybe they'll get some more by 9 August.

I have one unit. Let me know what files you need, and I'll help you out.

Sweet!
Essentially, I wanted the entire /system (/system/*) so I could compare all the files and find the ones that were modified, or in the worst case: replace them all with the working ones and keep the image for future recovery.
Seeing that the /system partition here is nearly 700MB in .tar.gz form, it might be a bit cumbersome to upload, so if there's a problem with that, these seem more essential to me than the rest:
/system/bin
/system/etc
/system/lib
/system/vendor
/system/build.prop

Also, /system/usr seems like it may contain device-specific/personal stuff, so you might want to skip this one either way.
Many thanks!
P.S. Sorry for shamelessly hijacking and derailing the thread. The one I created is here and may be more appropriate.
2 options:
1) restore the removed "bloatware" to its original location
I had the same problem. You can check the update log on the device after the update. I believe it is in /cache/recovery/last_log and you will find the problem.
In Android 4.2 you can better disable bloatware via app manager and disable apps you don't need. Or just rename .apk to .apk.ORG in /system/app (after used stop command and then rm /data/dalvik-cache/* and reboot)
2) restore complete firmware with these tools:
http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=486532
Latest full firmware is ME173X_WW_user_4.2.4.06716_20130918
If you use flash_tool.exe from ULK173_20130618_2123_CSC then load scatter file (MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt) from the main firmware, then flash it.
See attached picture. It is a factory reset process!
Pandawill also has a section in the forum describing flash process: http://www.pandawillforum.com/showt...er-PX2-MTK8389-Quad-Core-(update-Sep-6th-2013)

[Q] All links down, need T839UVKJ2 SK4G stock rom

so after looking for 3-4 hours i'm convinced that almost all the links for files related to the SK4G are expired/down/DL limit reached. i had to wipe my HDD and can't find my backup anywhere!?!? if anyone has the stock firmwares (any and all) could you pretty pretty please send them to me? i'm stuck in a buggy version of glorious overdose and just need my phone to work right again. respond for e-mail or just post ***NEW*** link in this thread.
P.S. so when the mods say "wrong thread" or "duplicate" i looked i searched and found nothing newer than 2013 so i started a fresh one......... that and i just signed up and it keep telling me "NO" in what seemed like the correct forum.
P.S.S i'm assuming there's legal reasons but whats up with a file repository on or at least paired with XDA to hold all the files posted here. shooting in the dark but maybe Kimdotcom will provide a mega account to serve as a repo?!?!?!?
I have the One-Click KG2 ODIN Java app that may be able to restore your SK to t839-Sidekick4G-UVKG2. Here's the README:
If you brick your phone, well you're lucky because it can't get any easier to fix. This is pretty much a one-click version of ODIN that is OPERABLE AND EXECUTABLE on ANY operating system that has Java installed. Self-explanatory, but if you don't have Java installed yet, you probably should go get it installed now.
(Credits go to Ayoteddy for the following post) :
To get into download mode (if you can't) pull the battery out of your phone, the USB cord (if connected), the SIM card, and the SDCard. Now...in a position where your one hand is able to access the Trackball and - volume key, hold them both at the same time and with your other free hand, insert the battery, after a second or two, you should see an Android on screen with a logo saying DOWNLOADING..you're ready to advance.
After you install Java, double-click the .jar file in this folder.
Hit "flash" and if all is well, it'll work without any hassles and you'll be back to the stock ROM like the day you got your Sidekick (factory reset).
If it says driver was not found, a window will popup with an administrative prompt if you are running Windows 7, allow it to run.
On the new Zadig window, go to Options>List all devices.
You should now see SAMSUNG COMPOSITE DRIVER, make sure the box to the immediate right says WinUSB and then hit the install button.
You should be on stock after performing these steps...if not and YOUR MODEM fails to upload, check "Flash Bootloaders" and the modem should flash just fine and you'll be back on stock ROM soon enough.
Thanks to AdamOutler for Heimdall!
His thread is here if you want to thank him properly!

Please re-upload these to sammobile.com, samsung-firmware.org, MEGA, Android File Host, or similar where the files can live on longer.
Sorry, I got rid of my SK a couple years ago and all the files that went with it.
