[Q] TF does not see micro sd card... - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Non rooted TF101-B1
I have a PNY class 4 8 gig card. I previously used this in my Nook to boot CM7/HC.
I used Easeus and deleted all of the partitions and created a new one.
I have tried both primary and logical partitions,
I have formatted with Fat32 and I have tried 4k 8k and 32k clusters,
I have turned off my TF and inserted the card,
I have reset my TF to factory,
I can see and read/write to the card from windows with no problems,
The TF does not see it at all!
Since other Micro SD cards are viewable, I can only assume I am missing something with the partition. For the life of me I can not figure out what that is. I'm tired of trial and error. I'm sure it's probably a stupid silly thing I am missing.
Does anyone know what I am missing?
MBK

I had the same problem for the same exact reason (loading CM7 via microsd to nook color). I had to use diskerase to perform a low level format on the microsd. Shouldn't be too hard to google it.

WOW!
Thanks SO very much for the nudge in the right direction!
I doubt I would have ever thought of "low-leveling" my SD card but you were absolutely correct!
It worked and now I can move on to something else.
I have no doubt my Android learning curve will have me back here soon!
Thanks again!
MBK

Have you tried simply formatting the SD card in the Nook Color? Didn't see that in your list.

No I never thought about that.
Wouldn't have helped me much if I had tho.
The wife was very quick to call "dibs" on the portable Netflix machine!
So she has it with her all the time now.
Thanks for the response.

Sounds about right I gave my Nook Color to da wife as well. However, you should keep some access rights. You might want to side load some apps off of it or use the SD formatting option. Helped me more than once!

SDcard Unexpectedly removing itself!!!???

Ok im about to blow my lid.. this is the second time im experiencing this problem.
Out of no where my sdcard removes itself. Its actually happen to where my G1 freezes, I actually try to reboot and it goes back into sign in!! Wtf!! my contacts are all gone my Gtalk has to sign back in.. THIS SUCKS. I'm currently on Dude 1.3 Rc2.. I'm an loyal dude rom fan and this has never happen to me.
Its happened twice so far and since the last time it happened ive changed my sd's im using a 4gb class2. Dont tell its the class2 cause Ive been using the same class2 since ive had app 2 sd and never experienced this..
Has this ever happen to anyone or is it a known issue if someone, anyone shed some light on my problem i would greatly appreciate it!!
THanks a million!!
Do your apps remove themselves as well when you have to sign back in? Like a normal wipe? Have you tried this with more than one SD card? How long have you had the phone?
Sounds like it could be hardware related...but trying wiping and reinstalling. Also, try not using APPS2SD and see what happens...because obviously, when your SD card stops working on Apps2SD, the background processes being run off the card are going to crash and lock up the phone, and you're needing to sign in because that data was stored on the card as well.
My friend had a defunct phone where not only could the SD card wiggle a little inside its slot, but the entire slot itself came off the board/wiring it was sodered onto, so if you've dropped your phone on that edge, that could be your problem. Every once in a while, it'll connect, but it can still unconnect at any time, like what you're experiencing.
Ext2 format itself!!
I actually noticed that my sd card is formating itself to Ext2(all 4 gbs) everytime this happens!! and its hell to format it back to fat32 this is got me going NUCKIN FUTS!! Ive never dropped my phone the sd card slot is intact and ive had the phone for quiet a while..
Also i use paragon to partition..
is it a 4 gb micro sdcard?
Edit. never mind didn't fully read it. the size of your sd card is your problem. I had a 4 gb and it pissed me off soooo bad. I don't know what it is about then but the phone doesn't like them. sorry.
yes, class 2

yeah buddy you're out of luck. buy a different size sd card and you will be good to go. I almost was going to try sending my phone back to t-mobile but then I figured since it started when I changed to that size sd card and I heard that they were having so much trouble with them with this phone that I would try a different sd card first. Switched to a 8gb class 6 sd card that I bought at target and things couldn't be working better.
hope this helps.

you don't have to be a **** about it. I am just trying to help. there is no need to say that what I said is "BS" I know that 4 gb sd cards have been known to have problems with these phones. I am not trying to say that is for sure his problem. I am just giving a suggestion that was given to me and it worked and his issues seem similar to mine.

sorry, I just found that rude. oh well. but if he is having a problem may not just be the sd card size, the problem may lay within the ROM as you said before. I would try talking to dude and see if it is something on his end. If it is I am sure he would be glad to know about it and fix it.
i had this problem with the 1gb microsd that came with my g1! i had a 16g sandisk class2, and it got fried, so i had to use the original 1g as a temporary...it did that all the time, i was using it for a week or two and at least once a day itd do that sh*t. I never figured it out, i just bought a Transcend 16g class 6...works great. Wish i knew the answer for you guys, though, sorry...Hope you get it figured out...

I don't have an answer, but I hope this can add more info to your puzzle.
Same happens to mine every now and then. No reformat though, just pops up an error saying that the sd card has been removed. Then my custom ringtone (which resides on the sd card) stops being used and it reverts the default.
Am running on JFv1.51 ADP and have the stock standard 1gb sd card that came with the adp.
I don't have apps installed on the card, just the cache.
big nu, I know that you say it doesn't matter if it is a class 2 or not but I would just try a class 6 sd card.

I'm sorry I never ment any disrespect in any way when i said its BS my bad.
This actually used to happen to me even before the cupcake update. I used to used a 4gb class 6 card which eventually got fried..so I'm waiting for a new 1 to come in
I know this will seem really strange, but I noticed a trend throughout all the posts....seems like the G1 doesn't like lower numbers Go with a 16 GB, class 6 card and call it good I never had a problem whatsoever with mine, even though I am currently using an 8GB, and Dude's 1.2b. Once I pick up my 16 gig, I will let (you) know how it runs.
i keep having the same problem and i am running jf 1.51 us no themes or anything

[Q] 64gb SD card?

Does the phone support 64g SD card?
Officially no, but supposedly, microsdxc is compatible with microsdhc, so you may be able to use it.

I'm curious if anyone ever tried this. I'm an avid audiobook listener, and have a large collection. It would be a pain to swap cards, so I'd rather have a larger one if it would accept it. I know that Samsung has said this was a SDHC phone, but other "SDHC" phones have had success with the 64GB cards. Anyone have a clue on this?

I have no clue, but you could use the Google Drive app or Google Books to store your collection - that way, you won't need a card.

That would be great, if I had unlimited data or constant access to wifi. I do not have the first, and at work, the wifi is locked with a password only the bosses get. I have a usb wifi adapter on my computer that will share my internet with my ad-hoc enabled devices, but alas, the charge does not have this capability either (unless my endless searching has missed something somewhere). So direct storage and access is my only chance (also, I have limited space on my computer, so storing and listening to them there is not feasible either.

well, you don't have to download all of the files at once - just one at a time. perhaps the night before you can sync the book you want to listen to your phone to have it ready the next day.

YES you absolutely can run the SanDisk 64GB class 10 micro SDXC card in your HD2. The phone does read the full 64GB and can access it all. You do have to reformat it first as it is in exFAT which can't be read. It needs to be formatted in FAT32. The kicker with that if you try to format in your PC, MS has deemed that FAT32 is 32 GB max and if you use the inbuilt format in any version of Windows, it will only format it in exFAT or NTFS. I also tried using a program called SDFormatter but it would not allow me to format in FAT32 either. I ended up using EaseUS Partion Master Home Edition, which is a free program. It worked a charm, and was very fast as well, Then I xxcopy'ed my SD card contents onto the new 64GB card and installed it in my phone. Both my WM 6.5.5 and my SD Android 2.2 are working perfectly, though the Android may be just a bit slower now and then. Both my 32GB and my 64GB are class 10s. I use XXcopy to keep a backup of my SD card on my computer, just in case. I update the backup every couple weeks or if I have updated anything significantly (which seems to be all the time with Android apps). I am running Core Cell Evo v4.1 and CoreDroid v.08. Here are the links to Partition Master http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm and XXcopy http://www.xxcopy.com/xcpydnld.htm

Sorry I was in an HD2 forum trying to post this, and the XDA system told me there were similar messages I should check out first. I was in a rush and it never occurred to me it would look for messages in other forums. I assumed it searched for similar messages in the same forum. My bad, expected the XDA system to be smarter than that. Ditto for deleting a message. I'd gladly delete the SOB but after wasting 1/2 hour I didn't have trying to figure out how the hell you to delete a message, I just gave up. [Q] 64GB SDcard format question

I ordered a new Sandisk 64GB SDcard but after reading many threads on the topic here, I have a question about the format. From what I've read, in order to have the card recognized by CWM and other custom recoveries, it needs to be in Fat32 format rather than exFAT. Many people have suggested that you can use a Windows based 3rd party software to properly format the card, but I don't have a SDcard reader on my PC so I'm not sure what my options are at this point. I tried searching the forums about posts from people in a similar situation (i.e no card reader on PC) but was unable to find anything. Any suggestions or ideas on what I can do to retain the full 64gb capacity and still be compatible with CWM without having access to a SDcard reader? Thanks very much.

Will need to find a PC to format it. It comes ExFat and not only recoveries won't see it but roms/kernels may not see it either. The program is guiformat. Can Google and find it easily. The site is little confusing. Click on the picture of the app and it will give you the download.

Thanks very much for the response. I was afraid that would be the case. I honestly don't know anyone who has access to a SDcard reader, so I might have to just end up returning it to Newegg for a 32gb version instead. Thanks again, I sincerely appreciate the info.

I thought these issues were exclusive to just the 64gb variants.
I actually dug around in my basement and found my old PC tower that has a built in 8 in 1 card reader that supports SDcards. If I can find a way to extract it from the old tower and hook it up to my new one, I may yet find a way. Thanks again for the continued help.

Yea. Only difference between 32 and 64 is don't need a special program for 32. Windows can do it natively. Good luck.
I realize this question may sound ridiculous, but I figured there was no harm in asking.
Is there any chance I could stick the 64gb card in my old Droid X, connect it to my PC, and then use the program you suggested to format it to FAT32? I guess I was hoping the phone could act like a SDcard reader of sorts for my PC. Thanks again.

I had a droid x but I'm not sure if it handled a 64gb but if it does you should be able to format it the way you want.I bought a $4 usb micro sd card reader for my SanDisk 64gb card and I hooked it up to my pc usb slot and used a partition program and was able to successfully format it to fat32.Have not had one problem with it being recognized by any Rom or kernel, think it gave me 59gb total after it formatted.

Won't work from phone but go to radio shack and get cheapest one of these you can find. May be able to get with 1GB card. Take pic and show them what you want. Sorry I been busy and didn't think about it. Good call Droid. $12 max.
So I purchased a SDcard reader, hooked it up to my PC, and formatted it with the guiformat program that was recommended earlier in the thread. I set the allocation size to 65536 and left the Quick Format option checked. However, after it finished, both Windows and the S3 only show it as a 32gb card (approximately 27 GB total storage space). Is there another formatting program for Windows or any other ideas you could recommend so I can get the correct storage size (64gb)? Thanks again.

I tried using a few different programs to format the card to FAT32 but every time it still showed up as a 32gb card. I ordered it directly from Newegg so I don't think the authenticity is an issue, but I have no idea what could've caused this to happen. Regardless, I sincerely appreciate the help I got from the folks in this thread and via PM. Thanks again for your time and effort.

There's another thread detailing all the issues with exfat 64gb cards here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698672
I encountered the same "hiccup" as you pertaining to the 32 gb issue.
I ended up using a program called EaseUS Partition Master to finally get all back to normal. I wiped my sdxc partition, it did come back with some message that something didn't complete ???, but then I formatted as fat 32, primary partition, and got the entire 64gb back and so far... ( fingers crossed ),.. all seems to be working well.
With the card formatted as exfat, as soon as I got around 8 gb of music, photos, etc.. the card simply would loose its' file structure and just start acting weird. All files would still show up if I pulled the card and put in an sdxc reader on the PC... but my Galaxy S3 never would recover them properly.
This has got to be some kind of "bug" in the phone as you'll see in the other thread this problem is quite common.
For what it's worth.. I seemed to have much better luck transferring large chunks of data with the card in the reader opposed to hooked up while in the phone. ( speeds kept dropping via the phone cable )
Good luck!
Thanks for the info. I actually tried the EaseUS Partition program you referred to, but it still remained at 32gb. I ended up returning the card to Newegg and will just get a 32gb to replace it as I'd rather not have to repeat this process. Thanks again for the useful info. I sincerely appreciate it.
Sure... I vaguely remember I had to try to format as NTFS first for some reason before I got it to properly format with entire 64gb fat 32. I spent countless hours trying to work out all the bugs with this card and exfat. Samsung states the Galaxy S3 phone is compatible with it... but there is definitely an issue with file structure once you start loading it up.
Quick update:
I ended up returning my Sandisk 64GB and replaced it with a G.Skill 32GB (Class 10) that was on sale for $22 from Newegg. Surprisingly, it came already formatted as FAT32 so I didn't have to mess around with it to get it working with CWM and custom kernels. Seems to be working great so far, and is plenty fast, so I'm pretty happy with the end result. I guess it might have been nice to have an extra ~30GB, but I mainly stream all my music/video anyways, so I'll have a tough time even filling up this new card.
Thanks again to everyone who gave me their advice and input on trying to get my first SDcard formatted correctly. Even though I wasn't ultimately successful, I sincerely appreciate everyone's time & effort.

[Q] cyanogenmod 10 and problems mountind a 64gb microsd card.

Im going to pull my hair out. I finally managed to root/upgrade to cyanogenmod 10 and now i cant read my external 64gb microsd card. It use to work just fine in my stock Asus Infinity and now it doesnt. I tried using other mounting methods, but they were meant for other devices(like Evos, Galaxy, whatever). It can read other microSd cards, like 32gb and 8 gb, but i dont want my 64gb going to waste. Can someone help me and i apologize for being a pest.
I do not have my 64 GB yet -- I'm still a little wavering about ordering the Sandisk Ultra Micro SDHC Card 64GB Class 10/UHS-z as the reports of it working or not vary -- but I am curious as to how it is formatted. That might help the more knowledgeable folks out in determining the root cause. I gather it did work on stock? Can you try and reflash CROMI (after making a nandroid backup) and see if it works again?
I have a Sandisk 64GB MicroSD UHS-1 card (the red and grey one) and it works beautifully on CROMI

Works fine in both.
It use to work fine before I installed cyanogenmod10. To get it to work on the original operating system, I had to format it in my phone to create the partitions because it wouldnt recognize the card in the tablet (wouldnt let it mount or anything). I tried doing the same thing again this time and it didnt work(not allowing it to mount). Im inserting the microsd directly into the tablet.
BTW, thanks for the replies so far, I do appreciate it. Any info is useful
Sounds like a cm issue. Have you asked other cm users if they have similar issues?

To get it to work on the original operating system, I had to format it in my phone to create the partitions because it wouldnt recognize the card in the tablet (wouldnt let it mount or anything). I tried doing the same thing again this time and it didnt work(not allowing it to mount). Im inserting the microsd directly into the tablet.
BTW, thanks for the replies so far, I do appreciate it. Any info is useful

No problem, that's what we're in here for. Partially...
What filesystem did you format to? Have you tried redoing it? GParted has been good to me, I don't know what system you have to your disposal to reformat. Why are you doing multiple partitions -- are you aiming for the data2sd mod? Have you tried making it a single partition? If you insert it into your phone, it does work, I gather -- if you make copy a file to the card, is it actually written?

I did a quick format on the computer, Fat32, then I formatted it in my HTC Evo 4g LTE because thats how I was able to get it to mount/read originally in my unrooted/unmodded tablet. It works on my phone no prob. As for the other questions, I think i worded my problem kind of wrong, because I wasnt trying to do any fancy kind of partitioning; i just want my sd card to work. Sorry for any confusion
EDIT!!:
So the plot thickens! After a random reboot, I was able to get the tablet to recognize the card...and then when I powered it down and backup, it lost it. It seems it randomly recognizes the card after a reboot(but not all the time). UGH!

It should work fine in cm10.1, the issue was just resolved according to some users. Test and see

[Q] SD card just died

I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

And now its not. This is frustrating. I don't want to spend money on a new card dammit.
Try booting a linux live cd and see if you can save anything, thats how I recover deleted tomtom maps in the past.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far

So I have had my sd card corrupt a few times now, so far this has seemed to help me recover my data.

The problem could be a sandisk SD card:
(Outside link) crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3-fault-is-caused-by-sandisk-memory-cards-50010684/
I read about the SD problems after just getting the S3.. decided to get a different brand card from the store.
