I used to use Kies do the sync, but after flashed I9000 based roms, kies doesn't work anymore(says device not supported), is there any other way to sync with outlook? google is not a option cause it's another group contacts which I used on another phone. Thanks.
I use Outlook Hotmail Connector and a hotmail account.
the reason Kies says Device not supported is because I9000 roms change the product ID. It is not recognized as a captivate anymore. Same thing happened to me. There are threads on here on how to change you product ID back to the captivate ID but whatever you do, don't try to change it back to the captivate ID while still on an I9000 ROM - it will completely screw your IMEI number, and possibly make your phone unuseable as a phone.
The only way to use Kies with your captivate is to be on a captivate based ROM, generally a KB1. But even if you flash back to stock 2.1 you will still need to edit some files to get your product ID back to normal. It's a complicated process if you have never done it before.
As far as contacts go, I use MyPhoneExplorer. It's free, get it in the market, and you also need the free copy on your desktop (or laptop). It can sync wirelessly or via usb with Outlook contacts and calendar.
I'll be glad to assist you with product ID change if you need. just let me know. I have done it several times. But be prepared to back up everything becuase it will involve flashing stock and clearing things.

I use GSyncIt. Very good program. Highly configurable. Costs $20 but it is worth it to me. Syncs contacts, calendars, motes, etc.

Hi,
the Samsung contacts app can not use groups defined in google contacts.
Is there a way to replace the app with the standard android contacts app?
Contacts
Did you sync your contacts with Google online? I have the Samsung Captivate and I did that at first since I could not get phone to sync with my computer and was in a hurry. I found that if you do it through Google you can't do some things like ring tones and maybe Groups (not sure about the groups tho). If you did sync through Google I would make sure they are in your Outlook, wipe the contacts from the phone and then sync to Outlook. I hope this helps.
I never sync my phone with my computer as I don't use Outlook or other PIMs.
There Vibrant and Captivate forums (here and elsewhere) are full people in the that describe the same problem, I hope that Samsung will fix this ASAP...
Bump on this question.
What might happen if I flashed the Google Addon EPE54B from CyanogenMOD's site which is intended for the Droid though possibly would work on other phones?
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/42-google-addon-epe54b/
I would love to be able to do this as I text message a group of people from work quite often. I have found that using handcent and clicking the "+" button in the send to field will allow me to pull up my "google groups".
Bump.
I'm running the SRE v1.3.1c ROM on my Captivate, and the only thing that's keeping me from loving this phone is how they managed to f up the contacts application.
Groupy has made things slightly more bearable, but I long for the stock Contacts that I gave up on my Nexus One.
try Contacts GroupU from the Market
Best alternative so far! Thanks for pointing me to that app. Not perfect, but pretty [email protected] good.
This has been bugging me for weeks and I've yet to hear a response from Nitrodesk's support team.
From the synced contacts list in the Touchdown app, when you long press on a contact and try to add it to phone, it will not show up on the phone's contact list.
I made sure the display settings were all checked off in Phone, SIM, and Google to make sure I can see everything.
This worked well for me on Froyo, but I have yet to get it to work on any 2.3.3. ROMs I've flashed.
Can anyone confirm they are having the same issue?
I am running Continuum 5.5 and I can copy contacts to my phone from Touchdown just fine. Have you tried selecting the menu option to copy all touchdown contacts to the phone or is this just a problem with individual ones?
I wouldn't expect any response from Nitrodesk support. They will use any excuse possible to not help you troubleshoot a problem if you are not running 100% stock. At least that is my experience. If you said Captivate and 2.3.3 in the same breath they will most likely ignore you now.

This is just for individual contacts that I want one-by-one from Touchdown to the phone. I can batch copy the entire list to the phone, but that's not what I want to do.
Are you referring to "Update Contact Changes to Phone"? If so, that's not exactly what I'm shooting for. Is there another setting I'm missing that helps with individual transfer?
NM. Problem solved, though I don't clearly remembering having to do this on Froyo.
I had to make sure that my Touchdown account was listed in Accounts and Sync. However, I couldn't just simply add it --- I pressed the Touchdown listing but it did nothing. I had to batch import my Outlook contacts so that it would get added on the overall accounts list. I was avoiding having to batch import so that's why it took me so long to get to this point.
Now that I have it listed, I could now add individual Touchdown contacts to Phone.
Again, I don't remember having to do this on Froyo, or that it added the account without my knowing it.
First, I did use the search feature, but couldn't find anything specific to the Inspire. If this already exists, please feel free to link to it/close this thread. Thanks!
So, I can't seem to effectively back up my contacts. Titanium Backup doesn't do it, and I thought they were synced via Google. Not to mention I've had the same SIM card for YEARS and all my contacts have always been on there. Now, since I rooted my phone and started flashing custom ROMS, they have disappeared. Now I am without my 400+ contacts database, which I need.. So my question is, what is the best way to back up contacts, and is there any way to recover the ones I had?
Thanks in advance!
As long as you didn't choose not to sync with Google before you flashed, they are backed up. Most likely the problem you are having is getting them to import. Try going to Settings>Accounts and Sync> and manually sync your Google account.

I rip my employer a little I guess and store ALL my contacts to MS Exchange for several years now with nary a hiccup...that said since I've been on Android, Google does a fine job too. ... I think my free Sugar Sync account probably has them too...with this phone I have given up storing any contacts at all on the SIM card...because I have gone through what you are when simply switching phones or have phones stolen/lost in the past...but yeah make sure at least Google is backing them up...
It all depends on where you have chosen to save your contacts. If to phone then they may be lost forever. If to sim then simply import them back to your phone. If to Google account then as said above just re-sync.
When thinking about flashing rom's the first thing that you should do is make sure all contacts are backed up. Best choice is with Google. That way everytime you wipe data you can boot up your phone sync with Google and BOOM! They are there. Works a treat. Cheers.

Thanks guys. I've had them backed up to Google before, and even restored them before, but it doesn't seem to be working. I just flashed the VU ROM after having been using the RCMix3D ROM for my Inspire, so I'll post the question on their page and see if it's a known issue with the ROM or anything.
Good luck.

I have been on a captivate and now the inspire. Flashed upteen different roms and never had an issue with google restoring my contacts. Everytime I put the gmail addy in it pulls it all over.
Doesn't the htc sync account do that as well? Try doing that. If all else fails and you have them in say outlook or still on google then you can export them as a comma separated value (CSV) file and then put that on your sd card then import them via the people app. You can then save to sim via the people app.
I am on VU now and it restored flawlessly from gmail.
This is one app on the market that you can look at.

I would recommend using my backup pro from the android market
I didnt even think about this until after I flashed it but now I am trying to save some time getting my contacts back.
I typically use the att contact address book to sync my contacts, well this rom is a rogers based rom and doesnt have this option.
Do you guys know if there is any alternate methods to pull those att contacts and load them onto this rom?
Without flashing back to an att rom, then backing them up, and then reflashing infused?
Your answers would be greatly appreciated...thanks
contacts
go to att.com/addressbook (i think....it might be .net) from there you can dl your list as a csv spreadsheer. Then either import that list into google or outlook and sync that account for contacts.
Do you know where i would navigate to to be able to download the list? I couldnt find it.
Should be stored in your android account

Hey!
Since my DHD is at service, they gave me in that time HTC ChaCha. Now, most important was to connect with gmail, as I need all phone numbers from there. I tried to add gmail account from accounts & sync, but it looks like they locked that option to add gmail and facebook accounts. Is there a way to add it anyway?
Greetings.
Have you tried a reset to factory? The initial setup should start then.
Sure, i tried factory reset, but it looks like they somehow locked few functions... I cant use market, I cant use my gmail contacts directly from gmail, etc... Its like to have NAKED android xD
Well that sucks a lot mostly. You can't do anything
Hmm, I know, get a XTC clip, S-OFF the device, flash windows 7 on it then return it to the service that gave it.. They'll be surprised a lot.
Tell them you don't know how to use the phone
