Random reboot temporary fix? - T-Mobile LG G2x

So i've had random reboots starting on my phone recently and was thinking about ordering a replacement phone through LG here soon.
However, after speaking with a T-Mobile rep, they advised me that after hearing complaints about it, they've found (or heard of) a temporary fix for it, and it has seemed to stop MY random reboots too.
They're saying theres an issue with the software and the GPS crashing, a tmobile rep told me to just try and turn off the GPS option in the settings and, ONLY turn it on if its REALLY needed, and it should solve the reboot issue.
Now mind you my phone rebooted randomly about 2-3x a day. After following this very easy step, it no longer reboots AT all... and whenever i need GPS for anything, i just turn it on for those moments, then turn it back off.
( not sure if this has been mentioned before, but if it hasn't then give it a try, if it has then just hit the back button and continue on with your life )

Have tried that because I feel its probably partially GPS related too but I've had the phone reboot while GPS was off. I don't know if even using it for a bit seals your doom. What's weird though is I've never had a reboot while actually using the GPS including in Navigation for hours at a time. I think we just need a patch at this point.

[Q] Screen won't stay off!

I can't turn my screen off. When I press the power button it goes off for 0.5 to 3 seconds and comes back on. I was using Axura when it first happened, but then I restored an older CM rom and I'm having the same issue. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm sure I don't have to add that it isn't ideal for battery life ..

Are you plugged in when it is happening? If so, have you tried to turn off the "Always stay on" setting?
I had this happen to me. It turns out it was a faulty power button. Its a hardware issue. I had to return my phone because I was still in the 30 day window, if you're outside of that you need to send it in to samsung.

Thanks for the replies.
Strangely enough the issue disappeared as quickly as it appeared about 6 hours after it began! I tend to agree that it's a hardware problem, but as long as it's not happening constantly I'm going to live with it (due to the fact that as an Australian living in Spain with a NS from the US I don't imagine a warranty claim would be easy).
A hardware problem wouldn't be my first assumption if I was on a custom ROM and/or had lots of apps installed.
If it happens again, I'd get a logcat recorder app or adb logcat session running on the phone and see what exactly it says goes on just before the screen wakes each time.
Oh ok. I tend to assume it's a hardware problem due to the fact that it happened on completely different roms. But the way that bug causing "artifacts" are sometimes left behind when changing roms doesn't give me confidence in that assumption. I really don't understand it.
I'll definitely give the logcat a go if it comes back. Thanks.
hi,
i am bringing back this thread from a few months back because it was the only one i found that showed the same problem.
i installed alogcat and attached a log file here. can anyone see if there's anything in the log that would be a software reason as to why it's waking itself? also, it doesn't shut itself off while this is happening. the screen will stay on indefinitely. i've had the phone for 6 months and this has become a new problem i would say in the last 3 weeks. i don't want to have to send it to samsung for a few weeks.
thanks for any assistance

Take pic with camera using flash: phone goes dead?

Hi - I just got my Sensation a few days ago and I love it. But I have now found an annoying bug (?). When I take a picture and it involves the flash going off, 8 times out of ten the phone will just go dead immediately - screen off, no response. Sometimes a battery pull required to get it to reboot. Anyone experienced this?
Seems to happen indoors when the subject is fairly close, darker conditions.
Not sure if this is a hardware or software problem - I really don't want to return it
Try turning off geotagging.
Thanks, I tried that, then turning off gps, then turning off location, same problem every time.
I find that turning off mobile data, and even leaving all of the above on, stops the problem. Or, leaving data on but turning off the flash. Data + flash = crash...!
Still not sure if this is software related? I guess so?

Hmm. Since it's correlated with the flash, and few if any others have complained about this I'd guess HW, but who knows. I'd probably do a factory reset, and if that didn't fix it get a replacement.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Same thing happens to my phone.
This was posted when the phone first came out. Probably in the early threads. That was one of the first things I checked when I got my Sensation. I don't know if there was a solution other than swapping - but do a search in the forum because it was covered. Hope there was a solution for you.
Same thing happens here, Revo HD.
MEETOO
At first I just waited and it would restart THEN...
Had to pull battery and it would restart THEN...
When it restarted only a speckled screen followed by home screen THEN...
Only speckled screen THEN...
Nothing but the vibration when trying to restart THEN...
A replacement is being shipped after a trip to the T-Mobile store.
Initially I called T-Mobile and they told me the UPDATE would solve my problem but as the day progressed it was all down hill.
During the course of the sales person ordering me a new phone they automatically added a protection plan without my knowledge.
YIPPEE HUH?

Anybody having reboots/freezes, have you tried this?

Don't ask why but try doing the following:
- Settings -> Sound -> Haptic Feedback. UNCHECK (turning it off)
- Settings -> Language and Keyboard -> Android Keyboard Settings -> Vibrate on KeyPress. UNCHECK (turning it off)
I've had good results since doing this without changing anything else, phone has been more stable and no random reboots or freezes yet. Theory is due to the custom driver/vibrator used in the LG G2X (per CM7 team) there's a memory leak or some bug that over time causes the phone to reboot/freeze.
Why I think this:
- A few times in the last few weeks it froze was when a notification came in (GMail, SMS, etc.) that would have caused the phone to vibrate but instead of doing so it just did the SOD. Know this because I have a XOOM with me (3G) and emails come to both XOOM and G2X same time
- If I leave everything on, after about 2-3 days of use the vibrations start getting wonky with some lasting longer than they should or just not doing it properly
- Had a similar issue with CM7 on my Verizon Incredible where vibration issues would eventually lead to a reboot/freeze
NO GUARANTEES THIS WORKS. But I wanted to share and get more feedback. Please make these changes and then restart so its fresh. You don't need to disable vibration alerts, just the haptic feedback and keyboard vibrate.
Please post your feedback. Thanks.
I dont have reboots and never have those on...I'm gonna turn em on and see what happens..
I just turned mine off as suggested... I am on my 2nd G2x and am experiencing reboot issues already. I will keep you posted after a couple days on the results.
Thanks for posting this potential fix.
Had these off ever since I got the phone, haptic feedback gets really annoying. Will put them on and see what I find
I have had those on and had no reboots.

Might be related to hw. The vibrator in the phone is a piece of hw so maybe some versions have problems and some don't. I know while my Incredible had vibration problems on CM7 others didn't with same exact software.
I wanted to see more if people getting reboots benefitted at all from these or not. It you don't have reboots at all this post is irrelevant.

It might have more to do with the software. I've used the stock ROM, the leaked 2.3.3, and Cyanogenmod, and all three use different vibration models. The 2.3.3 was particularly bad, CM7 is probably the best.
Bought my G2x on the 9th( So, hello! I'm new ) and everything was great until... yesterday actually. Had a bootloop and had to factory reset, then it locked up later. Then today it locked up and I pulled the battery and just now it didn't come on when I tried to unlock it.
So... I'm trying this. Hopefully it works. D:
If not, I'm gonna have to get a replacement or something. I'll be back with a follow up, some time.
For those of you who try this, please update here after a day or two. I am likely to let T-Mobile switch my phone out to a Sensation today so I may not have a G2x to play with any more. I really like it and if there is a simple fix I'd be willing to give it another go.
Trying it now
I haven't had it reboot on me since I did a factory reset last week...
I'm going to turn off the vibrate settings as described in the first post. I'll come back in a few days to respond if I've had any reboots, freezes, etc.
EDIT: I'm also going to reboot after changing these settings just to make sure they "stick" and the phone is "fresh".
Day 1, no freezes.
I charged the phone and it didn't freeze either...
It's Day 2 now and I'll let you know how this goes down as well.
I haven't had either of these options checked since I first got the phone. I have a reboot approx every 1-2 days and a freeze every 3rd time.
Another strange thing
It's been over a day and a half after I've turned off the haptic feedback settings described by OP and no reboots or freezes yet. Even while using wifi calling and heavy camera use and very heavy picture uploading directly from phone to picasaweb.
Something else strange that happened to me before that could be related to the vibrate software/hardware is when some one called me it would vibrate and ring like normal but after sliding the green arrow over to answer it stopped ringing, answered the call just fine, but the whole time while talking the motor continued to vibrate in the two pulse way it normally does! Has anyone else had this happen!?

Try wiping your dalvik cache as I've posted in a separate thread.
worked for me. 2 days no problems
day/charge 2 and 3... everything is going well.

Random Reboots.. any new info?

Hi everyone.. I searched a bit but couldn't come up with any more answers so I'm wondering if I missed something.
I've had my TF since like May, and for as long as I've had it, I've had this issue.
No matter what kernel or Rom or anything, my TF always randomly reboots ONLY when my screen is shut off and the wireless is left on. It doesn't reboot if I'm using it, and the only way to make it not happen is to turn on airplane mode when I'm done with it.
Its not a big deal, but it is annoying, especially if I leave it in the living room and forget airplane mode. Then whoever is in there gets to watch my TV constantly and randomly reboot every few minutes.
Its just more annoying than anything. Id love to just keep wifi active so it automatically connects when I turn the screen on.
Other than this, my TF has been flawless for like 6 months
Thanks if anyone has any information!
I've suffered through the same issue with my 16gb TF. By any chance do you have your pattern lockscreen turned on? Can't quite remember where, but I read that having it stops the reboots.
I tried it on mine and haven't had one since...but it's only been a day or 2. Can anyone confirm if the lockscreen stops or limits the issue?

Wow, ill have to give this a try. I've never used the pattern lockscreen.
random reboots
I get this after about an hour of use. If I sitch it off via the button then when I press it again it reboots. If I just let th TF switch itself off (after 5 mins) it switches on normally when I press the start button.
I also had similar problems with my wife's TF, it rebooted randomly just about anytime (not just with screen off), apps crashing randomly. When I returned it to the store where I bought it, they immediately replaced it with a new one that doesn't suffer any of those problems.
If you have such problems, I'd recommend taking it back to the store for repair, because that is definitely not the expected behavior.
unfortunately the lock screen thing didn't work
Can't really take the thing back, I've had it for months.... fortunately this is the only issue I have... I can live with it. Its purely an annoyance that doesn't affect me when using it...

random shutdown

Hi all, my O3D is shuting down randomly each and every day for like 4-5 times. Dont know why, dont know hot, just when I press power button no picture on screen and after few seconds LG logo pops up. Its running on v21e stock rooted with megatrone. Also try to wipe dalwik, cache and battery stats after instaling ROM Manager and still the same, right now it shuts down for two times in 10 minutes. Could be problem that I root phone after did install few apps from market. What to do, read many posts and threads regarding this problem and no help for me.
Thanks.
it could be a posibility about some programmes
i had the same problem and i tried to load the same baseband again (kdz files) , then it stopped rebooting
No, just did reinstall v21e and still the same. Also did factory data reset few times and no help my O3D just keeps shuting down without any reason. Anyone has some suggestion its really stupid to use phone this way.
I had this problem on froyo. In advanced wifi settings make sure the wifi sleep policy is set to "when screen turns off"
If you have it on "never " the CPU gets overheated or something. I had been rebooting Every hour since changed it to "never " but when I turned it back the reboots stopped

It was already set to 'when screen turns off' and I did not change anything. Today only two shut downs since this morning.
Do a clean installation Kdz . Don't change anything and see if it reboots. If it does you must have some sort if corrupted kdz file

Tried cleaning the battery terminals/contacts, you might be getting a bit of oxidisation making the power drop out. This happened to me with some older phones so no reason it can't be the cause.
I tried everything, new kdz update, check the contacs on battery, but they were clean and I doubt this has anything to do with it but even that did not help. My problem was yellow spots on screen, send it to service and now I dont have no problem with yellow spots but my phone constantly keep shutting down and now it is really unusable at all.I have no idea what to do.

Who serviced the phone? If it was through LG or your service provider, I would see if they can replace or repair it. It sounds like it could be an issue with the motherboard. Devices exposed to long periods of high humidity experience the same issue that you described.
LG service my phone and yes they replace my board with new I send it to service because of yellow spots on screen and they replace my board, now I dont have no yellow spots but phone keeps shuting down. Then I will again send it to them. Thanks

That would be the best course of action. If you ever get a product back from repair and is still faulty, notify them immediately so that they will repair it. Sometimes if you wait to long they'll try to push the problem off on you for abusing the phone and refuse to repair it. Also, you may get lucky if you notify them that you received a faulty device after repair and handle it rationally. Most companies will compensate by replacing the device or sometimes even upgrading it for the inconvenience. I work in IT and if I don't repair something correctly the first time I'll make sure it gets taken care of and go the extra mile as long as they don't come in yelling about it. Just some "food for thought" for today.
