[Q] Google music folder exclusion - Thunderbolt General

So I just got the Google Music beta invite and have been syncing my stuff to the cloud. But, I see no options to exclude folders, so it brings in all my podcasts from doggcatcher and my recorded calls. Has anyone found a way to exclude folders?

Yes, you can. I'm not at home right now so I can't look, but IIRC it's the second tab in the music manager. I removed the default on mine (since I didn't really want everything synced) and just added the folders for the artists I wanted access to.

Are you talking about from the app on the phone, or the web interface? Either way, I can't find what you're talking about

Music Manager is the run on PC that is putting content up into the cloud. You should had to have run it to select what to upload ... choices are iTunes, WMP, My Music folder or Other. Use Other to pick exactly what you want.. In the Web player you can remove uploaded content by selecting it and there will be a arrow in lower right corner to delete.

Ah! Ok, I understand what dbagjones is saying now. Maybe I wasn't too clear in my post. I meant exclude folders that are on the SD card in my phone. Hence why my Doggcatcher and recorded call files are being displayed in the music app. They aren't music so I don't want them in there.

The only way that I could find to selectively upload is to use the "Other folders" option on the "Select music" tab and just pick what I wanted uploaded.

That still isn't what I'm trying to do. I have .mp3 and .wma files on my phone that are NOT songs. The Google Music Beta app for Android must automatically scan your entire SD card. I'm not even trying to sync those to the cloud, whatsoever. I just want them to not show up in the app

Can't you put a .nomedia file in there?

yup, adding a .nomedia file to the directory you dont want included will have the media scanner skip that folder and it wont show up in any music app

I know that .nomedia works in the phone. But does it stop the Music Manager from uploading them from my compooter in the first place?
If not - is there another clever way to do this?

music problem found!

I have noticed when i download a folder containing music files via torrent it will not show up in music player!
Whats the format of ur music in the folder? Normally it will auto detect all the media
Sent from my hTC Z710e Washing Machine
It's mp3. Go ahead and try yourself, download sth via torrent and post the result
I tried copying folders of music which I've downloaded from various sources, and they've all worked fine. Your question is pretty vague though.
There's many ways to get music onto your phone; let us know exactly what you did, and we'll be able to see if there's a step you missed.
eg:
1) downloaded torrent from website
2) ran torrent in uTorrent, to download music
3) connected phone to PC in "USB Storage" mode
4) copied downloaded music to 'Music' folder on phone.
The more detail you give, the more easy it will be to figure out what's going wrong.
Personally, I use WinAmp on both PC and Sensation, because that will allow me to sync my music over WiFi, so I don't even have to have my phone nearby - I can leave it in the next room and think "Hey, I need XYZ album for tonight", load WinAmp, and it sends the album to my phone. Nice.
Ok here goes:
1. Installed aDownloader
2. Searched for a torrent that downloads a .mp3 format
3. Downloaded the song
4. Opened the song to check if it is a valid file with FileExpert and Astro,
both played the song without problems
5. Opened the Music Player and did not found the song in the library
6. Moved the downloaded song from the aDownliader folder to Music folder
7. Still not showing in the Music library.
All steps were made without the usage of a pc...
Any thoughts?
Reboot your phone OR download something like SDrescan.....
Sent from one of my phones..... If only I could remember which one....
Some .mp3 won't be on the music library. The only way I've managed to play those mp3's, is to launch it directly from the file. Weird, I know.

Lol, it's somewhat funny.. no it's more like, tragicomic, yeah, tragicomic is the word that such a beast of a phone doen't support the simplest of all features, editing song info in music player and manually scaning the library for new files hahah
Sdrescan saved me and fixed the prob, i gave u +1 for that
P.s rebooting also does the trick but takes a bit longer (the startup scan is to blame)

[Q] How to take advantage of SRS with another player?

Hello!
I've got my Sensation yesterday
Loving it, despite of the bugsss
I see that Sensation can config SRS in the default player, wanna use it with speakers
But I rarely use the default player =\ .. mostly mSpot and I'm thinking of testing Google Music, both having their "custom" players
Is it possible to take advantage of SRS with any other streaming music player?
Or make the default player see the songs downloaded by mSpot? (yea.. I wasn't able to make it do that )
That's weird, cuz it can find musics downloaded by "MP3 Music Download". And it's not the codec either, it's m4a by mSpot.
Thanks in advance!
SRS and Dolby 5.1 are only available through stock apps from my experience. To get your media to show up in the stock app use an app that causes a new media search. SDRescan is free on the market. I use Extended Controls.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried the SDRescan, but it didn't work =\
I've also rebooted the phone.. it just doesn't see the mSpot folder -.-
I'm not familiar with mSpot. You say it stores m4a files on your phone? Try to look for the directory with Astro or Estrong. I'm betting they aren't there or are in a hidden directory. Make sure you set the file manager to show hidden files. Check mSpot to see if there is a setting that allows you to hide media from the Android system. Subsonic has a setting like that.
I did a test copying the mSpot file to another folder.. it was able to see the music
So I guess the file is not the problem
But still can't make it to scan mSpot folder

The files are there. Didn't find any setting like that.
I think I'm just gonna try Google Music (to sync) and play them with default player
Thanks, though!
Oh.. I found a file named ".nomedia" inside mSpot's folder
After deleted that file, it was able to scan the folder ^^
But the song's properties (song name, singer, album..) are encrypted, so they're all messed up XD can't use it!
Just gonna try Google Music..
Use Volume+.

That sucks man. DRM sucks. Yeah any folder with a file .nomedia or any folder that begins with a . is hidden from a media scan. The period first in the name is how you label a file or folder hidden in Linux.

[Q] How can i work the nomedia???

My xoom is not working nomedia.
I installed the osu, the music game,
that game has many images and music.

What is "nomedia?"
What is osu-the music game? Can you be a little more clear?

.nomedia is a file that works disable the media scanning in android.
If the '.nomedia' is in folder, that folder disable the media scanning.
You see the page - http://osu.ppy.sh/p/about
osu need to many pictures and mp3 because of running games
So, If the '.nomedia' is not in Osu folder, their all files(musics, pictures) are scanning,
and therefore i can see their music in music app, and can see their picture in gallery.
If i put the .nomedia to Osu in android 2.2, 2.3, that files didn't scanning.
but, xoom it's not.
I used tiamat 2.1 hammerhead.
I'm having the same problem, rooted on stock Rom. Pictures still show up in Gallery although the .nomedia file has been used.
Is there a fix for this?
You should just be able to open your gallery, highlight the folder that they are in and click Delete. It will not delete the files. Just their entry into the gallery. Shouldnt show up again unless you do another media scan. Not sure what happens then. I usually just delete the folder after removing it from the gallery first. Never tried scanning again to see if they come back

META inf files?(SOLVED)

Where are they held?
The reason I'm asking is when I put music onto my SDcard no matter what player I use it misses over half of my albums. Itunes to my Ipod has no such conflict. So doing a little research lead me to the meta inf? If a folder gets transferred to storage it should still contain the meta data right? How do you make that data readable to the system?(for the record mizing, uber, miui, and stock all have the same results).
Thanks

How are you putting the music onto the sd card?
From harddrive to folder to sdcard. So all the info pulled from the harddrive should be there? My music collection is very tight. Meaning all songs and album art are held in a single folder. Any ideas?
Are there by any chance any .nomedia files in the folders?
No .nomedia files in any of the folders.
What formats are you using on your music?
.m4a is the file type.
You might've downloaded some aac files from the itunes store right? Are you sure none of them have drm? Android won't be able to read them if they do

No aac files and I've never used itunes store. All of my music comes from other free sources. It's weird. I have about 50 albums and half are recognized half are not. The ones that aren't have the correct song names come up and even the correct album name but for some reason the artists name isn't being read.

Tried winamp same thing. What is going on? On a side note tried winamps shoutcast for a second. How does Van Morrison end up on alternative?!
The only thing I can think to do is redo my music folder and download it again to my phone. It's crazy the files aren't corrupt because they play.

It might be a tagging issue. Not sure what method itunes uses to tag its files since mp3 files tend to use id3. That's why I'm glad on windows, Mediamonkey handles all the tagging. I have my folder structure really organized so that if I try to look for music from just a computer, no music player, I can find it.
/music/Album Artist/[<Album year>] Album/Track# Track title.
If you can get on parallels or bootcamp and can get mediamonkey on windows I'd give it a shot. I'll tell you how to force an update of the songs' metadata.

My music is organized the same way. I'll give media monkey a try when I get some time. Still gonna try just redownloading my music to the sd card when I get some time as well. I'll let you know how it goes. If you have any other ideas let me know.
Thanks
I have this same problem. I use Winamp to sync with my android. And i made sure using both Winamp and an independent tagging program that all my files have tags (artist, album, cover, etc.) and yet half of them still are not read on my phone. Not by Google Music app, not by Winamp, and not by Samsung Stock Player.
Could it be the file types that dont work?
The ones that DO have Artists reading all have the correct album artwork. The ones that DO NOT have artists according to my players all have albums, but about half of them do not have album artwork (the rest do). I'm not sure what's going on. I think it's an error within the Media Scanner?
(on a side note- if you include the track number in the file name of your song, it will show up as that when playing. I would recommend not putting the track number in the file name.)
Nickcu
I never figured out what's going on. Just learned to live with it. I think I might start playing around with it again and try to come up with some answers. If you figure it out let me know.
Im gonna look into it some more later, but i THINK it has something to do with the file type at this point. But don't quote me on that haha.
Just redid all my music. pulled all Itunes related crap out of the folders and it's still not recognizing about half of them. Gonna try some other stuff later. File type isn't part of it I don't think. It still recognizes and plays just shows up under unknown.
I just looked through mine and it seemed that all the files with unknown artist were in .m4a whereas the ones that recognized the artist were in .mp3
could you check and see if yours is the same way?

[Q] Offline songs in Google Play Music?

Hello, I just want to know how the Google Play Music app know where and how to select the songs on my device's local storage in order to play them in the app? In fact, on the external SD card of my phone, I made a folder with all my songs in it and when I open the app, all songs will automatically loads up in the app. But the question is that the setting of the app is dead simple; it does not even have the "music folder' selection in which I can tell what songs the app have to scan. Why and how everything comes out automatically and what happens if I have more than one "music folder"? How to app will scan? Thanks.
I want to know this as well cause Google Music isn't bad but just being able to play music when your online is just crap when you have music stored on your phone.
Android has something called a media scanner, it usually runs after boot has completed (it may also update here and then while the device is running).
So this media scanner scans all your data for music/videos/pictures so that these files can easily be accessed by any app. So it does not matter where your files are, it just finds them.
If you add music through any non standard app to your storage this may not trigger the media scanner, thats why recently added music may not show in those apps using the media scanners results.
