Thunder 4G,on off? - Thunderbolt General

How or is it necessary to turn off 4G to save battery life on the thunderbolt? I do not have 4G in my area. Thanks.

If you don't have 4g just turn it off. It will consume more battery leaving it enabled.

If you don't live in a 4G area, you will most definitely be able to save some substantial battery life by switching to 3G only.
Download LTE On/Off from the market, and then switch your "preferred network type" to "CDMA auto (PRL)," using that app.

Thanks

If you don't want to download an app, typing *#*#4636#*#* will bring you to the menu to change the settings.

Losing WiFi signal strength

Does anyone else experience a loss of WiFi signal upon covering the too of the phone eg when typing in landscape mode or playing games in landscape. This is a very major drop too where I will completely lose signal strength. Also, are you using a case? My phone is completely bare right now when experiencing this.
EDIT : this happens even when I'm not touching the top, this may be unavoidable if its not just me?

Click settings, wireless networks, wifi settings, click the menu button, click advanced, click best wifi performance. Back all the way out of the menu.
Hope this helps

Thanks I was having same problem with wifi cutting out when I held it with both hands in landscape orientation. Setting it to best wifi performance seems to have done the trick.
I still lose a bar or two holding the phone in such a manner after turning performance WiFi on... it is nowhere near as catastrophic as it was before....
Fwiw I have my router in the same room as the phone and it still happens.... N band wrt-310n with dd-wrt set to a full 40mhz wide band, wpa2.
From what I can tell this setting basically enables mimo. As a result my speeds increased dramatically... I can get a full 16/16 Mbits up and down................ as long as I'm not actually holding the phone

Forcing Infuse to use edge network.

Hope this hasn't been asked yet but is there any widget or system setting to force the phone to use 2g? I'd like to keep my connection at work but avoid the drain of maintaining HSPA in a brick building.
Thanks.

Yup...turn it off or use WIFI

You're saying that the only options are on and off?

HSPA is just like running 3g. But if you call *#*#6767*#*# then after that reboot your phone you should be good
Search market for "curvefish", grab their 2g/3g - on/off widget and download it.....add it as a widget to your home screen and you can easily toggle between 2g/3g...

Power Options is also a good one. I have it and it acts as a double for the power control widget that comes stock with android. you can customize it as you like.
I use power widget so I can use the 2g/3g toggle and stay awake toggle and always on as well.
So has anyone actually tried these on their Infuse. The widgets just take you to the Network settings where AT&T has disabled the ability to turn off 3G. Any way to turn on this option with a rooted Infuse?
I didn't bother to reply but I have the same questions you do. The toggle is not 2G/3G but data on or off.

curvefish has a widget toggle for 2g/3g on/off and data on/off

@SSJ_Gomike,
Your signature shows you sent this reply from your Infuse. Have you tried that curvefish toggle? I have it installed and all it does it take you to the network settings where the 2g-3g setting has been disabled by AT&T. I have the setting on my Nexus One, so I know exactly where and what to look for. So far none of the suggestions work.
My battery life is suffering since the 3g signal is week at my office and it switches back and forth between Edge and 3G/faux G.
There are several posts for this I have web, going into an emulator and disabling hpsa, but why you want to. I can't see it would save much battery life. I've come to understand battery life on my phone is meant to go quickly.

I don't want to disable this permanently, just while I'm at work. Its not so much that edge would save battery, its the constant switching between edge and hsdpa that kills the battery. Even sitting on the same place on my desk, it will sit there and switch without me touching it. I have fairly strong 3G at home and in town. I was hoping to avoid going into debug menus to disable this functionality that's normally in a vanilla android ROM.

Exactly! I used to have the same issue with my iPhone 4 but even it had a 3G toggle. If this all boils down to AT&T again...

Does other Samsung Galaxy phones have the option to turn 3G on and off?
If they do not, how can ATT be at fault.
They allow it, on the iphone. I will go and say is a samsung thing.
Either AT&T being themselves or Samsung with their hands in the android settings. Because vanilla Android has the capability.

Then scroll down to the drop box and choose "GSM only"

AT&T is known for disabling this capability on all their phones. When I used to use Nokias a lot, the ATT specific firmware did not allow you to change that setting either.
I just tried the *#*#4636#*#*, but for some reason it won't save the setting. Do I have to reboot for it to take effect? I didn't seen any way to confirm the change.
Anyone come up with a solution?

WCDMA/GSM

If I switch from WCDMA/GSM auto..to..WCDMA only, will it save battery just from not having to switch back and forth?
No, it'll actually eat more battery trying to lock your phone into 3g only mode.

Jumps from 3g to H

running opensensation stable and ive noticed my phone jumps from 3g to H sometimes now is that only if im downloading somthing and to save battery it stays in 3g? or why is it doing this? lol
That's normal behaviour, H should only be on when it's needed, otherwise it should drop to 3G.
If you want to change this you can lock on one signal by going to #*#4636*#*# and when I lock on 4g I click the menu inside phone information from #*#* 4636 *#*# and use pull down menu and click wcdma only then scroll down click refresh. This locks my 4g signal . Hope this helps you this is what I do. Works for me.

CM10: Does switching off LTE save a lot of battery?

Before I start my own exhaustive test, I thought I would ask to see if someone has already done it...
I notice in CM10, you can go to MOBILE NETWORKS in the settings and pick either:
- LTE/CDMA/EvDo
or
- CDMA/EvDo
Does switching to the latter (no LTE) produce a noticeable battery savings? Is it worth doing if you don't use data intensive apps?
Thanks!
Turning off 4G usually saves battery life.
In CM10 it definitely saved my battery life.
I still got horrible battery life on CM10 no matter what I did. I went back to touchwiz and am getting 30+ hours every charge with about 5-6 hours screen time.

If you are in a area that 4g switches back and forth with 3g thwn ya it will save a lot battery. If you are in a good 4g area and just run in 3g ya it will too save some battery because the LTE radio isnt active (4g and 3g use different radios)
