Hope this hasn't been asked yet but is there any widget or system setting to force the phone to use 2g? I'd like to keep my connection at work but avoid the drain of maintaining HSPA in a brick building.
Thanks.

Yup...turn it off or use WIFI

You're saying that the only options are on and off?

HSPA is just like running 3g. But if you call *#*#6767*#*# then after that reboot your phone you should be good
Search market for "curvefish", grab their 2g/3g - on/off widget and download it.....add it as a widget to your home screen and you can easily toggle between 2g/3g...
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
Power Options is also a good one. I have it and it acts as a double for the power control widget that comes stock with android. you can customize it as you like.
I use power widget so I can use the 2g/3g toggle and stay awake toggle and always on as well.
So has anyone actually tried these on their Infuse. The widgets just take you to the Network settings where AT&T has disabled the ability to turn off 3G. Any way to turn on this option with a rooted Infuse?
I didn't bother to reply but I have the same questions you do. The toggle is not 2G/3G but data on or off.

curvefish has a widget toggle for 2g/3g on/off and data on/off

@SSJ_Gomike,
Your signature shows you sent this reply from your Infuse. Have you tried that curvefish toggle? I have it installed and all it does it take you to the network settings where the 2g-3g setting has been disabled by AT&T. I have the setting on my Nexus One, so I know exactly where and what to look for. So far none of the suggestions work.
My battery life is suffering since the 3g signal is week at my office and it switches back and forth between Edge and 3G/faux G.
There are several posts for this I have web, going into an emulator and disabling hpsa, but why you want to. I can't see it would save much battery life. I've come to understand battery life on my phone is meant to go quickly.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I don't want to disable this permanently, just while I'm at work. Its not so much that edge would save battery, its the constant switching between edge and hsdpa that kills the battery. Even sitting on the same place on my desk, it will sit there and switch without me touching it. I have fairly strong 3G at home and in town. I was hoping to avoid going into debug menus to disable this functionality that's normally in a vanilla android ROM.

Exactly! I used to have the same issue with my iPhone 4 but even it had a 3G toggle. If this all boils down to AT&T again...

Does other Samsung Galaxy phones have the option to turn 3G on and off?
If they do not, how can ATT be at fault.
They allow it, on the iphone. I will go and say is a samsung thing.
Either AT&T being themselves or Samsung with their hands in the android settings. Because vanilla Android has the capability.

AT&T is known for disabling this capability on all their phones. When I used to use Nokias a lot, the ATT specific firmware did not allow you to change that setting either.
I just tried the *#*#4636#*#*, but for some reason it won't save the setting. Do I have to reboot for it to take effect? I didn't seen any way to confirm the change.
Anyone come up with a solution?

While that is an option, it's not quite the same thing. There are times when I simply want to toggle off wifi calling quickly and keep wifi connected. Am I alone?

thats a very dumb solution considering how much wifi calling running drains the battery.
A widget would be nice

I wrote some Tasker scripts that provide an "Enable" and a "Disable" button for wifi calling. They require Tasker and the Locale Execute Plugin.
It essentially freezes/unfreezes Wifi Calling so it doesn't drain battery when not in use. It also toggles wifi on when the app is enabled, and when disabled (if necessary)... it gives a few seconds after WIFI changes to allow for the app and phone radio to not cause force closes.
An enterprising individual could *probably* combine the two scripts into a single widget.

On the Vibrant, at least, the Wifi Calling App is frequently the #1 user of CPU time even when Wifi calling itself is disabled. I don't know if it has the same problem on the G2x, but if you check with SystemPanel's logging, you might find that it does. This is why some of us go to extreme measures to freeze/disable the app when not in use.
Has anybody had any luck with wireless network connection managers on the Charge? I used Green Power on the Fascinate, but it doesn't seem to work here. Even if I have 4G disabled, data will not turn on when the phone wakes up. Active data when the phone is sleeping is killing my battery.

Are you talking about wifi? If so then you can set it to turn off when the phone is asleep. Settings-wifi settings-advanced settings.
If you're talking about 3g/4G data then I guess you'd just toggle it on and off via the pull down switch?

I'm mostly talking about the 3G/4G data. I manually toggle wifi when I'm at home, and have it off when I'm out. Green Power did a good job managing the mobile data while the phone was sleeping, but it's not working well on the Charge. It will turn the data off after the screen turns off, but it won't turn back on when the phone is unlocked. I'm trying Juice Defender, bit so far, I'm not sure if it is working, since the free version doesn't have too many custom settings.
*update* JD isn't working for me. Mobile data was still on while the screen was off for at least 10 minutes. uninstalled. I'll keep trying. */update*
I have also noticed that this phone does not sleep when it's charging, it locks in at 100 MHz when the phone should be sleeping (never saw this on the Fascinate). I'm running PBJ_voodoo under stock rooted rom.

So it puts in like airplane mode when sleeping, Pretty slick.
I would still go into your wireless settings to have your wifi turn off when at sleep for when you're at home. It saved me a ton of battery at the house and that feature is not available for most phones.

Somewhat like airplane mode, except only for mobile data, voice signal stays active.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I can confirm that both Green power and JD do not work for data control...well JD does sorta...it will turn the 4G off and on but it will have issues turning it back on if it changed to 3g..there is a mode that you can highlight if it has troubles re engaging the data but it takes a few minutes and then it totally resets the connection including the phone service...at least thats what happened for me. Both control the wifi fine though. I have yet to find a service that can control the 4g consistently but I would like one
WTF?!? I live just outside of an LTE zone, so I have my network set to CDMA. I've gone all day with data turned off, and battery is still at 30% (16.5 hours since unplugged). I've switched the data on a couple times during the day, but only for short periods, which is what these apps are supposed to do. It just sucks that they don't work. Even on a good day with the fascinate, I never got close to this kind of battery. *sigh*

Use seans sky ics rom, incredible battery life. TIP: Some dont know this, but if you go into wifi where it shows what access points are in reach, hit menu and an advanced menu will pop up. Tell wifi to only stay on while charging.
If i am on wifi and pocket the phone, wifi will turn off while sleeping, it will still use cell data though, but saves battery big time while sleeping. I have had the skyrocket for a few months now and I am pretty normal to heavy user and I can easily get a whole day. 16 hours+ with data on at all times.
The sky ICS rom does allow you to tuen data off completley within the 15 toggle mod that is baked into the rom.
Yeah that's the rom I'm using, but I was just wondering if I can have data on but lte and 3g off, thanks for trying to help anyways

It's like my radio sleeps sometimes. This screen shot shows no data. Once I wake my phone data reconnects. I don't think this is caused by no signal.

Looks like you live in a so so signal area, the closer it is to green then the greater your signal is. I would think that's an issue with the towers in your area cuz as you know the signal fluctuates often even while sleep.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. I don't understand why it shows no signal when there was signal. As soon as I woke the phone it reconnected to the tower. There's a delay when it switches from 4g, 3g and 1x....This long area of red was probably the phone stuck in the delay between switching? While trying to submit this post I just lost data in a strong 4G area..... I don't get it.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
How often within a day/week does this occur? That's still odd behavior that you lose signal or notice signal degradation while sleeping.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
This happens once or twice per day. Seems to happen in areas with less than great signal, that's why I think it is maybe getting stuck in the transition between 3g and 1x. No idea why it stays stuck once I move to an area with better signal.... Seems like the radio is sleeping until I wake the device.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
It happened to me before. Try to go to flight/airplane mode and back. It should reset everything. I also sometimes press and hold the home button , then remove all applications and go to ram memory and clear it.

Are you stock? if no, what ROM are you running? Are you rooted? what apps are installed.
If you have CWM recovery, i would try to wipe cache and reboot, see if it helps at all?? if you don't have much installed, i would say do a full system restore...
one other thing, are you losing data, ie; not getting text and or phone calls? Also, check to see if you have any battery savers checked. Might be just a method of saving battery by shutting off data until it is needed.

As far as I know I am not missing phone calls or texts. Power saver is turned off. I am basically running the phone the way it came brand new (not many apps, no root, no unlock.... Yet).
Thanks for the replies. Any chance a factory reset would help? My mute/vibrate functions in settings do not mute the phone either... Still get audible notifications and phone rings like normal. Unrelated to the data issue but still weird for a new stock phone.

I'm not going to lie. I don't know if it will help or not. But if you are stock and got nothing to lose it would give it a shot. Can't hurt? Also, as others have said, it sounds ds like it could be because of signal strength. A lot of variables though.

Now before I say this I want to make it clear that I am not representing Verizon or Samsung in any way with this post, I am just updating the users on what I have identified from the test of my device on this reported issue.... So with that said you can take this accordingly..
Ok everyone about the reported connection issues reported, I recently have been able to duplicate the signaling issue reported on my S3 and it appears to be miner for me at the moment but I can say that it is present.. I recently attempted to isolate the bug and I learned that when I placed it in my test rig to monitor the device in the weakest area in my house the software would temporarily powers down the radio for a few seconds that causes the device to loose all connections (Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G and some times also the network connection), this only happens in a weak connection area and it does appear it could be a software related bug with how the radio drivers handles switching the connection from one connection to another.
From the test results this does not appear to be a hardware issue but I do agree that this could be a pain for a user on the border of a 3G and 4G connection because any connection change causes a crash or radio and force restart.
I have reported this to CS and it appears to be a situation that is being looked into and a solution is possibly in the works... Eventho this isnt a major issue for me at this time, I hope to see a update to address this soon.

This is frustrating. I have lost signal now two times and needed a reboot to get it back. When I did, I was not only losing data, but phone also. I would get this barrage of texts and missed calls.
I am rooted and unlocked, so there in itself could lie a problem, but it comes without warning and the phone appears to be working. Would the SIM card really effect that?

get tasker instead. More work to set up but a LOT more powerful. JD tended to kill my battery more than save it
Juicedefender is only most useful when you're juggling mobile data and wifi, unless you really have a regular schedule daily... I find that it doesn't make battery life worse, but I don't use it on my tablet as it doesn't affect the life much.
