is there an easy way to back up the whole phone?
update through zune and it creates a backup of the whole phone
Yeah, but what if there is no update and I still would want to make a backup?

From this post from the Backup ROM thread, sidicious suggests:
Use cmd to open C:\program files\zune\UpdateWP.exe
you will see the command-line interface options.
you will want to chose the option which specifies that you need to have cab.pkg files, as that is the format of the backup files. You can use this program to force updates, or force recovery of a backed up image.
NOW as an added note, if someone who has a working focus wouldnt mind creating a backup of their phone with the updateWP tool, and sharing it with the community, i think a workable rom may be made from such a backup.

The Zune software automatically backs up your OS before updating. So no worries!
question, how do i restore the previous back up
thank you
After you've updated, connect to Zune, click Phone-> Settings -> Update. There you will have the option to restore

Has anyone actually tried this specifically on Samsung Focus? Did it work? And the bonus question, was the unlock working after that?
I'm asking, because I'm reading the Focus threads and there are some people there for which Zune restore didn't go well.

Wow, I almost missed this. Can you please archive the content of (your call if w/o password):
"C:\Users\your_user\Local Settings\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\"
and upload it somewhere (multiupload.com).
"your_user" is your logged on user.
Thanks!
The Backup files are posted here:
7008_Backup.zip
There is no Live account connected to the backup files and the device id's in the .XML files have been replaced with X's
The file is 515 MB
I have attempted to use My backup on my wife's phone and it failed. You can see my record of that attempt here:

Need a bit of help guys. I need to revert my focus to the original rom. I updated to nodo thinking I could unlock and sideload afterwards, but of course.. I couldn't. I've reformatted my pc since then and don't have my old restore point. I'm downloading a 7008 backup from a user here on XDA (thanks munkeyphyst!!!)
but I don't know how to get Zune to see it as an old restore point. Can anyone tell me where I need to put the files?
I have XP SP3.
thanks in advanced.

any chance he has shared the backup in a thread? I am in need of such a backup as well. The files are all saved in your zune folder by the way, if you make a backup of your phone you will find them.

What will happen if I upgrade mango beta and missing my backup?
I upgrade to mango beta yesterday, I follow the instruction and the program tell me the backup progress is 100% done.
But today I went to Windows Phone Update directory and it just only list one directory "Properties" and Properties.xml.
My windows phone is HTC HD7, is that possible copy others backup and restore on my HD7?
You'll probably be able to find a NoDo ROM online, so come time for the official release you should be ok.
It will just be a slightly bigger hassle since you don't have quick access to your own is all.

I was wondering this too, I did the mangoforall update, and the directory in the route drive was only 4.00kb, I also was like WTF.
To use the backup, you needed to install the Windows Phone support tools, remember ??? Check that folder, it comes out on mine to a little over 5gb, and I am pretty sure(95%) that is where the backup is stored.
If your that worried, try to do a restore, if it works you can go right back to Mango, it just will take some time....
I personally would of liked clearer directions, I was kind of freaked out too. I also would like to backup this backup to DVD or another computer, to make sure I have a copy to roll back later.
Edit: Found the details on it...

Where's the location? %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update is the path I mention but I can't find backup.
Also, I can't find backup in C:\PreMangoState
I decided to screw all the update backup crap.
When Mango officially hits I'll reflash my phone with a ROM - that's it.
I have multiple phones - too much trouble trying to worry about this backup and that back-up.
the back up files are so huge.....
as i forget to delete my music and video and games, i got a back up file folder lager than 9G
Backup location
According to the Microsoft PDF, the backup location is:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\
followed by the unique ID of the device (for example e64ab58e - 58d.....)
My folder is 2.2GB. To restore, you go to Zune and pick Settings/Phone/Update/Restore.
If you received a Microsoft Connnect invite, the agreement had like 5 places where it made you check "I swear on the blood of my ancestors that I will back up because backups are holy". The instructions, invites, everything say "backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup.... copy your backup to a USB stick and put it in a bank vault". And then kind of finishes with, "did we mention, you need to back up, or your phone will be stuck in pre-Mango?"
So... I would suggest... you back up
It took my phone only about 2-3 minutes to back up, using MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe (much less than 531 seconds on their screenshot). Mind you, the next step (provisioning, where it says, "Installing Updates") took a lot longer than their 18 seconds (I think about 79 sec).
But like, 5 minutes is way better than "OMG MY STOOPID PHONE IS STUCK IN ****ING PRE MANGO" 2 months from now. Like, maybe they know something we don't and flashing back to NoDo is harder than it looks.
It was painless, really. Backing up took less time than reading about how important it was to back up
Actually I DO backup.
I just didn't check the backup location and re-check whether the backup is exist.
I just don't know why the upgrade tool says the backup progress is complete but it didn't save ANY backup on my computer.
That's all...
in worst case u would have to flash back a stock rom and have to reinstall everything...

Hi,
I have searched in the forums but i couldnt find any solution to my problem.
My phone is a LG Optimus 7 unbranded on mango.
I want to backup my phone, update it to the latest rom with tethering enabled and after that i want to restore from backup.
How can i do that?
Thanks in advance!
There is no tool that can do that right now. The backup only happens when a new updates come in and Zune does that. It cannot be done manually.
Thanks for the fast answer!
So do i have to wait for the tethering update to appear in Zune or do i have to flash another firmware?

Only Zune will be able to do it. So I guess unless they do you have no choice. And No Firmware can enable it.
wpxbox is actually incorrect, there is a tool to create an image-based backup (like Zune does when updating) on demand. Search the Development and Hacking sub-forum, and you can find it. Note that it requires a program, updatewp.exe, that was once distributed by Microsoft and no longer is, so you'll need to find a copy of it (and the version for that copy must exactly match your Zune version).
However, what you're asking for isn't actually useful anyhow, unless you want to install the update and then immediately remove it. A WP7 backup is really more properly called a restore point - it's a full image of the phone's entire storage, including the parts that are normally read-only (the ROM). Restoring that image overwrites everything, including the ROM. Updates are modifications to the ROM, and restoring a backup will therefore remove the update.
That cleared the things... Thanks.
Thanks for correcting me. Apprciate that.
Yes there is a tool which you can find here but to make it work you need to use Old version of Zune and replace couple of DLL.
I personally have tried it but for some reason it did not work for and hence I was not recommending it. But thats me.
Go ahead and give it a shot to see if it works for you. If yes let me know how you did.

Thanks for providing the direct link. I was able to get it working, although it took a lot of work to find matching versions of the tool installer (v1, not v2) and Zune software. It's possible, though. Take a look at the Backup header in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271963. It has instructions and links that you may be able to use to make the tool work.
Hi,
I finally poured in one complete day figuring out what was in that thread and made it work. I have written my version of making it work here
And Have also created a Video Demo as a Proof that How I made it work. Any feedback is appreciated.
The video is like 11:28 Minutes long. Where I have :
First showed what is my phone
Then created a Backup
Showed where the backup is actually stored i.e. Zune Default restore point
Reset my Phone
Used the Backup to bring it normal state.

Hi Im not a developer and dont know much about android i just don't know who to ask for this particular problem.
I had a ZTE Obsidian phone that wont get past the Metropcs boot screen so I did a system restore menu by holding power and the up vol button.
After going to boot menu I created a backup to my sdcard. userdata_20150101_003623.backup this is the file name I was given. To make sure I created another one and the only diffrence is trhe file extension saying backup1.
I then factory reset the phone and tried to reboot but it still has the same problem. I purchased a new phone the asus Zenfone3. I then tried to do the same thing here but restore the phone using the same backup from the ZTE but I received an error saying the backup is out of date. The zte was running on lollipop and the asus on marshmellow.
Im on windows 10. I was hoping to find away to extract my contacts and possibly the app color note with the notes I wrote in it from the backup.
Is this possible can I extract these files from a .backup to my windows 10 desktop some kind of way or can I get another zte phone and create a clone of my last one from the backup file
Greetings and welcome to assist. Do you know what format the backup was saved in ? Where you using twrp or cwm? You could use titanium backup to extract from the backup on your phone if you have root or I think assayed kitchen has the option to extract from a back up here

No I dont know what format the file is saved in. The file extension just says .backup

Im a novice at android and developing. I dont know what these are. I used my no rooted phone from Metro Pcs (ZTE Obsidian Z820) before I factory rest it I created a backup using the factory restore system on the phone. I did not use a computer or third party apps to do this.

The phone was from metro pcs and not rooted. I have also downloaded the (Assayed Kitchen) program but have no idea how to use it to access the .backup file. There are no instructions for some one of my limited knowledge on android phones.

Greetings ans welcome again. It is unusual for a stock recovery to be able to make a back up that is the problem, it is only normally possible to make a backup using a custom recovery like cwm or twrp so I assumed you had done this. You can not restore a backup from a different model of phone as it is incompatible, if you copy your back up to your pc and right click it to get properties it should tell you what file extension was used. You won't be able to restore the back up to a different model of phone but may be able to extract contacts, messages, photos etc

Yea thats what I thought but wanted to verify it. Im currently trying to find the same model phone online so I can use the files.
When I click the properties button the file type is listed as "BACKUP (.backup)". I dont think there is a program that can actually read this file type at least I cant find one that does.
If there is one I would like to be able to get that kind of info off of it.
