So a couple of quick questions.
One (and im asking this because including my og droid i haven't not been rooted in two years) if i return to stock (i.e verizon may replace my tbolt) will it also automatically return my kernel to stock. The only reason i ask is i just did a full data and cache wipe for a new rom and my new adrenaline kernel was still there, which is fine for now but not if i have to take it in.
Second: if it doesnt return to a stock kernel is there a boot.img or even a .zip that will work on clockwork for it.
I did try searching, and i do know how to unroot, I just dont know about the kernel issue once i do unroot.
edit: i did do my own full root, bloatware removed, stock kernel backup before i flashed the kernel, so as long as restoring that backup reverts it to the original kernel that is fine also.
if you use a RUU to return to stock....everything is back to stock including the kernel

if you use that RUU(out of the box state rom) it will remove root and return everything back to 'normal' so you could return/warranty exchange it

yeah i found the unroot instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423 if anyone else needs them and it has the link to the ruu. I just wanted to make sure it did return it. so all is good.
For what it's worth, my son returned a rooted Droid running CM7 because it had a bad camera, he did a mail exchange and never heard a word about it from Verizon. I'm sure the first thing they do with a returned phone is burn a stock image into it even before they "test" it. Think about it, they can't possibly have someone do a forensic examination of the software on returned phones. I think the main way they have of finding modded phones are due to people admitting that they modded it. Just sayin'.
If you make a backup in CWR (Rom Manager) before flashing a new kernel then you can roll back and restore the old configuration... including kernel.
You can also flash the stock kernel from Rom Manager.
No need to RUU unless it is absolutely needed. But this will cause a lot of extra work (need to re-root, etc)

bump? also looking to go back to stock kernel, without unrooting...
I have just flashed GR-11 on my Cappy and I have some questions.
GR-11 and Continuum have different instructions and ways on how to update the BootLoader. Do they end up with the same end product?
So does following the guide for GR-11 allows me to flash Continuum without having to go back to stock? or do I have to go back to stock before flashing Continuum (re-update bootloader)
Side questions, could you use Froyo Rom after updating the BootLoader?
Thanx
If you have the JVB bootloaders already installed you can change to another JVB rom without reinstalling bootloaders. A couple of people in GR11 thread have reported going from C5 to GR11 with no issues. You cannot however run a froyo rom on these. You must flash back to stock to get correct bootloaders.
Yes you can.. I had absolutely no problem running stock 2.1 or serendipity 6.4 with the new bootloaders.
Just make sure the rom you're flashing doesn't include an sbl.bin (like cognition does) or you risk hard bricking your device.

I stand corrected.
hard brick = dead even with jig?
or recoverable with jig?
oh and how do I know whether a rom has sbl.bin inside or not?
and I did post this on GR-11, but I thought I might ask here as well,
does changing the kernel on GR-11 from the instruction to Talon matters?
file system wise it doesn't change right?

It's not even a question of risk. it's a GUARANTEE if it contains a froyo sbl.bin while you're on a gb boot.bin you will brick it. For good. dead. No life. A shell if it's former glory. A corpse... I think I made my point
look in the updates folder if the rom zip you wanna flash, if it had an sbl.bin delete it.
if you wanna flash talon just pop it in the pda slot of odin and flash like the instructions say, if you look in the .tar you will see it only contains a zImage which is the kernel.

Hard brick as in the hardware buttons or jig won't do anything. It'll just sit at a black screen until you mail it to Samsung for repairs.
You can check to see if a rom contains bootloaders by opening the zip archive. There will normally be three folders, META-INF, system, and a third one usually (but not always) called updates. Look into that last one. If it contains either boot.bin, sbl.bin or both, you might want to take a pass on that rom.

So to be safe, just stay in Gingerbread and nothing should go wrong right?
Flashing kernel and other roms should be safe as long as they are meant for Gingerbread then I conclude?
Thanx!
Once you have the boatloader installed you should be ok. Flashing between Roms should be ok if its compatible with the kernel as long the Roms are based off the gingerbread boatloader

Ok so am familiar with android, and regularly flash and tweek my nookColor, but this phone is just WOW!
Ditching an iCrap4 for this phone was the best idea I had in a while, and within an hour after buying it I rooted it (had to do other shopping) . But there is so much more to choose from for an actual android device. The thing is I want to stay on stock 2.2.1 for a little while, until I do a lot more studying on roms.
Ok so here are my questions after tearing thru the searches with several different phrases:
1: Can I flash different kernels on stock rom? I keep getting many threads and read thru them hard but can't find the answer. Looking at Community Kernel 8.
2: Darn, reading thru other threads while creating this post fried my brain, forgot what 2 was.
Thanks y'all.
Yes You can! . I have flashed many different kernels on stock rogers infuse 2.3.3 with odin. I dont see why you wouldnt be able to on the AT&T version.
Sweet! Now to read up on odin, but will SGS or CWM work on the stock? That was the second question.

SGS kernel flasher works fine on stock ROOTED 2.2.1 ROM. I believe CWM is flashed/installed when you flash the community kernel in SGS kernel flasher or other method. I can't remember off-hand as it's been a while since I was on stock froyo for any length of time. LOL.
You will probably also want to read up on Heimdall as well. It's a good method of flashing pretty much anything to your phone and Odin can be finicky sometimes. Personally, I've never had a problem with Odin but knowing how to use both is a good idea. You know, just in case.
Even sweeter then, and I have CWM already, so that will get replaced? No problem.
This is gonna be hectic keeping all the stuff for the "andros" seperate. lol
I'm really itching to flash a rom, but this thing is set up like I like it, and it was a pain getting her there.
That is why I am waiting to flash, I'll get bored with the way it looks in a week or so, and start over.
Plus RESEARCH is crucial.
Thanks y'all
Ok flashing community v8 now and this voice is telling me it has 5 mins left, oh that is cool!
Now how do I tell if it took? What should cpu spy say? And I still have the green CWM. ( using rom manager, think its ok but can I switch it?)
3 button takes me to Red CWM 2.5.1.3 Voodoo lagfix. It wont let me get to my actual mSD card though. Is that normal?

I don't think rom manager does us infuse owners any good so you can install it but I've read it doesn't work all that well with our phones. It worked flawlessly with my n1 but support for infuse is not there yet.
I've never been able to mount the SD card in red cwm if that's what you were referring to. The community kernel does not overclock so really you just take advantage of the ext4 fs and voodoo lagfix (robot voice lol).
Hope this helps.

So everything is going good, trying out different radios now as service in my area sucks!
I have run into a small problem though, I really want a different boot animation, but there is no bootanamation.zip in the system/media folder on the stock rom. Just a bunch of .qmg files. Can I just add the file and it work? I was gonna try it, but wanted to see if anyone else was a guinea pig. Dont wanna screw something up too bad.

if your on stock i believe they are located somewhere else, but the main question is why are you still on stock??? :O
want good battery life and performance? CM7 is the way to go. yeah you can get prolly the same off infused or other roms, but thats after numerous tweaks, tweak this change that, tighten that up, loosen that up, delete that, add this blah blah blah. in my experiences, CM7 is the best out of all of them.
just my 7 cents.
Is everything (bluetooth) working on CM7 (HDMI doesn't I know)? Weird issues of any kind?
That or Serendipity are what I am looking at.
Bluetooth is the only buggy thing. But I don't use it so it doesn't bother me. Other than that its amazing.

If the bootanimation.zip isn't in system/media try data/local. I don't currently have an infuse, in waiting for mine , but other phones I've owned have had the zip in data/local... Good day
Tried data local, but I think the only way to get custom is to have a custom rom. No boot.zip on phone at all using a searcher.
it has to kernel enabled too... Once you get on CM7, if you do, it will be in the media folder.

Tried that too, no luck.
So Im lookin at S7, but coming from stock ROM, with infused 2.0 kernel, I know I need the infused GB kernel after flashing the ROM, but do I have to wipe system and DATA, and start customizing my stuff again? Or just format system, cache and dalvic, flash rom and kernel, fix permissions, and go? Then my phone should be the same with all stuff there, just updated to a better ROM.
Hello everyone. Merry Christmas! Well i left my phone on my bed and left it on bloatware removal. Sister wanted to come a game. didnt know how to get to the game press buttons and gone. No more tw launcher. Calls come in and out as well and messages. I rooted my phone with superoneclick. I thought i recover my phone. well i know i did. But i cant find the file. What should i do. I was thinking about using odin 1.7 and put [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root and see if that works. Hopefully that would put it back to normal. Or put gingerbread 2.3.3. I was wondering if anyone have fix this problem or have solved it. Any information help. Thank and have a wonderful day.

Merry Christmas to you! Unfortunately, this sucks for a Christmas gift!
You will need to flash another ROM to restore everything. Maybe you can try pushing it through adb.
The easier way would be to flash a new ROM over it, although you would lose all your data.
You can flash over any Froyo ROM to fix it, since they all have a launcher built into them.
The same applies for GB, but if you're moving from Froyo to GB, you will need the bootloaders from the leaks or the official.
Everything can be found through the forum, so good luck!
I can create a cwm flashable that will restore tw for you.
Just let me know what ROM you are on and what your email address is.

When one of my apps were due for a up date. i was able to make it to the android market. From there i was able to download either adw launcher or ex launcher. After i install ex launcher. I was able to open it through the Android market. And bang. It went into effect. And bang i didnt have a black screen anymore. Icon where there. I dont know what type of side effects will cause. but i will out after a few days of use. This is only a temporary till i grew some ball to change to gingerbread rom. lol For i am a noob. and trying to understand it a lil more. What are the benefit of gingerbread? One major benefit for me is getting my launcher bak. Well I hope this help someone out there. Hopefully i able to change roms in the future. Thank you for reading This and have a happy new year.
Hello,
First time poster in this section. I just purchased a SGS4G on Swappa. It's coming rooted with Valhalla Final.
I am planning to get the Walmart/TMob $30 per month plan. I've rooted and flashed my Asus Transformer, but this is my first time with a phone.
So kind of wanted to know my best course of action? I was kind of leaning towards reset to factory, then go ahead and go through the steps to get Valhalla Black. But the rooting/flashing methods are a bit more complicated than what I was doing with my Transformer.
Thank you,
Anton
if it's already running Valhalla, there is no need to go back to factory. You can just flash the new rom through CWM.

If you go back to true stock then you will lose root. However, there are plenty of modified kernels and ROMs that come with root.
Check out bhundven's One-Click collection. Super easy way to flash the phone. The first one click is straight stock. The 3rd is stock with his beta 2d kernel which also has CWM, root, and voodoo lagfix. I'd suggest snagging the 3rd one, do a factory reset on the phone, flash the 3rd one, then you should be able to throw Valhalla back on it the way you want
what i did... Just me but i would always have that one click flash back to stock always available on your pc Its just me dude you never know what can go wrong.. always keep that back door available.. odin was like my best buddy "ugh" when i first started out..

There is a 1 gig internal storage space where the system (ROM, cache, etc) resides. You can install some apps on your sd card (16 gig separate removable space) to save space on the system storage. All of your files, pics, and music end up on the sd card.
He is running valhalla final....there is no reason for him to be concerned with bootloaders at this time when all he wants to do is flash valhalla black.....this doesnt need to be made more complicated than it is...specially for someone new.....this phone is alot more durable and hardy than alot of you guys give it credit for and are only scaring the new people

Your right. It doesent need to be complicated. Nor is it.
One click back to "stock with beta2d", flash desired gb rom.

Dont worry the developement for this phone is slow compared to most so your not gonna miss much.
Only prob ive seen so far in this forrum is there is alot of clutter and to many different opinions on how and what to do and use to flash roms and and such...it is actually very easy...just pick a way and stick with it and learn the other ways slowly....but dont worry....the galaxy s series is virtually unbrickable
