If you use CWM3 it backs up your kernel and you shouldn't need to flash it separately.
Not to change the topic of the thread, but I've always had problems with flashing a different ROM and then trying to Nandroid restore back to the previous one... It always says my checksum is bad. Is this just something I'm doing wrong, or...?

Depends on what CWM you're using, I've had issues like that with 2.5.x but not with CWM3.0

I believe that occurs when you create a backup with lagfix enabled then try to restore it with lagfix disabled, or vise versa. I could be wrong however.
Has anyone used times_infinitys flashable CWM3? Would that work to do a backup?

Actually, since (A) I've been running with MIUI (more to the point, an AOSP ROM), and (B) I've been flashing my phone lots lately, I haven't had lagfix enabled in a month or so. I *have* changed recoveries once or twice though.... I'll try running with a 3.0 recovery as bde suggests and see if that makes the difference. It'd really make Romdev a lot easier a process.

The one packaged with H57 is fixed, there seems to be issues with other versions of CWM3, i don't think dfgas has packaged it up separately yet however...

On the main screen it should say 2.5.x or 3.0 - if you are using H57 you're on 3.0 (it hasn't changed any...) but it sounded to me like you went and flashed a different CWM (the one from times infinity is a little diff than the one dfgas built and put in the H57 rom)?
Yeah I flashed times_infinitys. When i flashed H57 it didn't flash CWM3.
Sent from my SCH-I500
I meant what version of the ROM is CWM3 in? Cause i flashed the 5/7 and it didn't have it.
Heinz 57 has its own version of cwm in it so when you flash heinz you will flash cwm too I believe. If you want to have times's cwm installed flash heinze in either cwm 2.5 or 3 then after you reboot. Go back in and flash times's version of cwm.

It lets you restore specific parts. Example. Your apps are stored in the data folder. In advanced restore you can select restore data and it will just restore that folder and sub folders

I don't know if anyone has tried this but I've been running kasoinate on my mesmerize since his v0 release. If you want to try it make sure you were already on a voodoo kernal. Download kaos's kernal and Tom from the fascinate forum. Boot into cwm and wipe, than run the rom zip first than the kernal zip. Make sure you install gapps also. Reboot and you should be in froyo heaven.

This works but do it at your own risk. Im working on a mesmerize build so if you can wait a few hours I may have something up for you all that is a little safer.

There have been issues even with people on the fascinate getting boot-loops after messing with that ROM. It's only a soft brick, but, you must remember, there are a lot of people who would piss their pants at the sight of a frozen Samsung logo.. We don't really want to encourage flashing things labeled for another device onto a different device. If the other ROM say had a Verizon radio in it.. well, it wouldn't turn out well. In this case, that is not a problem, but that's not always the case.
If Koasinate works, what about jt's stableish froyo build he released a couple of weeks ago?

Any aosp rom for the fascinate should work, they just need to be compiled using files pulled from a mesmerize.

Boot into CWM, wipe your device, install the vodoo kernal for your mesmerize than install your nandroid back up by goint to backup and restore and hitting restore and picking the most recent nandroid backup. In my case if I wasnt able to wipe or install I would have to do a battery pull and boot into CWM once or twice. Hope that helps.

Sgs? There was a app called kernel flasher I believe that allowed you to backup kernels and flash others..... I know I can backup rom, flash kernel and if I don't like it I can just restore my backup, but the restoring takes forever. I'd rather just flash the stock kernel... Or is there a stock kernel zip floating around I missed?

OK so we know the bionics bootstrap recovery doesn't work. I was messing around with Rom manager and flashed the bionics recovery and was successful. Recovery version 5.0.2.5. Then I booted into recovery from Rom manager and performed a successful backup! Gonna hold out on flashing the backup right now but I'm hoping someone that knows a lot more then me will look into this also and see what they think about it and can we possibly use everything without fearing a bricked device .
i successfully created a backup using the bionic bootstrap recovery, but im leery of trying to do a restore without having an sbf handy
Well I got brave and clicked the restore button using the bionic bootstrap recovery. I have 20+ days left to return the phone if anything went wrong. I backed up using the recovery, then clicked restore. Everything restored perfectly. I did not choose wipe data though, as I didn't think it would matter. Just thought I would add that bit of information. Hope this helps guys.

I just used CWM 5.0.2.5 to restore the system backup I made before updating, and indeed it worked fine. I'm back down to 55.11.16 android 2.3.5 (from 55.13.16 - 2.3.6) with seemingly no ill effects. IIRC, I made this system image with the bionic bootstrap recovery app.
Im still on 55.11.16 android 2.3.5 also, I know using Rom manager to make a backup took a lot longer then what I was used to on my OG. Just went through a restore with no seemingly ill effects. Has anyone tried flashing a zip yet? Just glad we seemingly have a recovery that is working.
my vivid will be here in the next day or 2. once i have that, i will risk the Atrix2 and start working on a rom.
Oh no Pirate your switching over to the HTC Vivid? I have been looking at the reviews on that device and it looks as thick as my A2 with the defender otterbox. I'm going to kick my cat if people start abandoning ship on the A2, bummer!
Awesome work on getting CWM to backup and restore. I would love to see some custom roms being dumped onto this device.
Nice! Recovery loads up smoothly on rom manager. This could get interesting...
If your bootloader is not unlocked be very careful as to what you flash!
Try a theme or something that does not affect kernals,

Thanks for the heads up!!
I'm unable to reapply the patch up to 55.13.15
Code:
contents of partition "boot" didn't match MTD:boot:8388608:9651a551679347926bb7589bb4b57d8dea357cb4:8388608:b56beaeb976b10b86cdbd38e87024ab16fe1197f
I've supposedly restored the boot partition with cwm, oh well.
This is probably to be expected. I'm guessing I can only get the stock boot partition back with a proper fxz flash to stock...
edit: I don't think cwm is even saving a boot image. I don't see one in any of my backups.
Makes me wonder what it's doing when I restore boot

alright, so I have tried to restore full backups and advanced restoring /data through CWM both through bhundven's kernel and drhonk's kernel and for some reason i've gotten the md5 mismatch error everytime...i have no idea what is causing it, anyone have any ideas?
I believe, not 100% sure, that only on bhunds kernel can you successfully do backups n restore through cwm so that might be why it isn't working with Dr.honks kernel

I'd be weary with the backup/restore function though. I wasn't able to do it on CWM 5.x.x.x. It sent my phone into a ridiculous bootloop, with no recovery, period. Had to reflash everything through odin. I've done backups before, so I know I didn't do anything wrong.

Bhundven's kernel is a cwm5 and it won't restore any backups made with drhonk's cwm3 kernel. He stated that in his OP somewhere. So any backups you make with cwm5, you can to a full image restore through cwm5. Hope this answers your question.

Right, the only limitation I know of with backup/restore on my new kernel is you have to backup with >= 5.0.2.7 and restore with >= 5.0.2.7. I'm still looking through bootable recovery changes to figure out what exactly changed so maybe we could make a version that supports both. But I'm not sure what the limitations of that would be.
You cannot restore a backup made with 3.0.2.8x.
If there is anything different you see, please report it.
simply put, for as long as i can remember all i had to do is make a full backup, it was stored on my sd, then if i made an error somewhere or flashed a rom i did not like, all i had to do was open up old faithful clockwork and do a restore and everything was fine. well the last few revisions of clockwork have screwed me!
if i do a backup, flash a new rom, make any changes etc, when i want to do a restore in clockwork, guess what? NO RESTORE FILES!
the restore data always gets marked and sent to the LOST directory.

There's also one more recovery that you can try out if you have the chance, its called AmonRA. I can't say anything about it myself because I've never tried it, but you could give it a shot. I can also say that my favorite so far (haven't tried TWRP though, will soon) is dread's CWM enhanced recovery. Its very useful if your phone won't boot up but you can get into recovery as it let's you run terminal commands straight from there, it also has a very useful Superwipe feature which I think all recoveries should try to adopt/include.
