Extracting a compressed file (ex. zip or rar)
1.) Download and install Winrar HERE
2.) Locate the compressed file you would like to extract
3.)Right mouse click on the file icon a drop down menu will appear , select Extract Here
4.) You will then see a progress pop up window that will appear then when completed will close itself
5.)This will leave an extracted file in the destination folder
Congrats you have successfully extracted the compressed file it is now ready for use

To install ODIN packages on your device
1.Download and install drivers on your computer HERE
2. Next you will need to download the Altered Beast zip file from post #1 which will be extracted and placed in the PDA section of ODIN:
3.) You will need to download the ODIN application tool found here ODIN or ODIN MIRROR
4) Extract the Altered Beast zip file to get the .tar.md5 file
5.) If your phone is plugged into your computer, unplug it now.
6.) If your phone is not powered down, power it down now.
7.) Remove battery from phone.

The first thin rectangle in the upper left of the ODIN applicate should also turn yellow and identify a com port. You can now release the volume key.
12.) Click on the PDA button in ODIN
Triple check that you pushed the PDA button. Do NOT click the Phone button prior to continuing to step 13. If you choose Phone, you will have bought your Fascinate a one-way ticket to hell.
13.) Find and double click on the Altered Beast .tar.md5 file you downloaded & click the Start button. (This should take approx 3 to 6mins)
14.) Phone will power down when finished.

no i honestly i am not sure how to make it in zip flashable form yet hopefully a developer will show mercy upon me lol and show me how its done

I'm game!
Downloading now.
Just wanted to give y'all a big "THANKS" for all you do!
This is the first time I've flashed a ROM in a long time. SO far, it's been fun - let's see what this one does!
EDIT #1
WooHoo!
After rebooting, it booted into recovery mode (Red Text), so I just rebooted, and it went to the "Red Eye", and about 2 minutes later, we're golden!
BTW, the boot animation is still 'glitchy'. Could this be from my original flashing of v4 Kernel?
EDIT #2
Looks like email is missing....no ability to add either POP email or Exchange email, unless I'm missing something.

Thank you for the ROM ...loaded up perfectly. Are you planning on keeping the background image for the notification pull down or going with a solid color/transparent?

Rom is amazing.

UPDATE: nevermind, found the solution in the thread on androidcentral.
Thanks!
Ok, the rom booted up great. But I'm having calendar problems. I downloaded both the .apks. The calendarsync installed fine, but my accounts say sync is experiencing problems and will be back shortly. So I tried to install the calendarprovider and it won't install.
Help??
Thanks!

I think in the ROM imnuts created, he removed the stock samsung email app. Unless you're talking about something different entirely.

Wow, this ROM looks amazing! Seriously cannot wait to see how it progresses.

Keep up the great work! Followed your instructions and everything is going great. I'm about to download those apks and put them in the place to fix calendar.

Im using this rom and dont have the calender bug. Only.bug ive seen so far is when deleting a contact it erases it then force closes on me. But it still does its job so its all good

For some reason, I can't even access the Calendar on my phone. It's not even in the app launcher or anything like that. The widget still works, but even from the widget, I can't open the calendar. Any ideas?

Update.zip 2.0 Modifier/Creator [Script] Drag/Drop Support [Windows]

This script has 2 main uses:
1. Modify an update.zip
2. Create an update.zip
For #1 - You just extract the contents of an update.zip into the placehere folder, modify its contents, and run the script stating to create an update.zip
For #2 - So far these are the options i have in there for create the update-script
1. Copy directories
2. Copy files
3. Create Symlinks
4. Delete file
5. Delete directory
6. Flash boot image
7. Set permissions for file
8. Set permissions for directory
New Features in 2.0 :
- Set java heap size / compression level for zip
- New drag/drop mode.
>>> - If you drag a folder onto the script's icon (as in Script.bat) it will compress the contents of the folder into a zip and sign it.
>>> - If u drag a zip onto the script's icon (as in Script.bat) it will sign the zip for you.
So this script guides u as u select each option, and adds the appropriate command to the update-script file. Then u exit that sub-menu and create update.zip
Heres a video for a better explanation:
This script is a result of me constantly wanting to modify roms before i flash them & users who are unaware/lost as to creating/modifying update.zips.

Awesome Gotta try it out.
I tried using this to just push a single app into /system/app just to see if it would work, but when I try to flash from recovery I get E:Syntax error in update script
when I open my update script it reads thus:
Code:
package_extract_file("LearnPython_1.1.1.apk", "/system/app/Python.apk")
Do you know what the issue might be?

Hmm thats wierd. Can u try placing the file inside a folder withing the placehere folder? N then try it. Tell me if tht works, in meantime ill try a example, perhaps the new changes i made broke something
K i figured it out, i forgot to place a ; after the line. Try placing it and then flashing. Ill fix it.
update-script is now
Code:
package_extract_file("LearnPython_1.1.1.apk", "/system/app/Python.apk");
but I still get a syntax error
Edit: I had also tried putting it in a placeholder file, but that didn't help either, even with the added semicolon
Hmm so something seems wrong with my package_extract_file syntax
Even though ive compared it to online update-script samples. Regardless, for now use the copy directories option instead.

Retry, cuz i just did it and it works fine.
Created a folder app inside placehere folder
placed my apk inside it
Ran the script, chose option 1
Then chose option 1
Then typed DATA
Then typed app
Then typed app
Then typed 9
Then typed 2
Then flashed the update.zip
Letter Casing matters, if it says SYSTEM or DATA , do that dont do data or system.
Btw, first clear out using the script. So when u run it. type y to clear ur previous work.

K i uploaded a fixed one. No file option for now just directory. And added a push to sdcard option. I think wht u were doing was putting it inside a folder and still using the file option.
Yay, it works now. Thank you for creating this and for helping me.

Well the reason i do it on something like mediafire is cuz its not xda dependant and that its one of the few sites with no waiting time for downloads. Plus i get to monitor # of downloads, in order to know if something is in demand, hence ill work on improving that.

Ok, well I've tried both firefox and IE and they both do the same thing. Can you post a mirror because I've never had any problems with mediafire downloads before? I even logged into mediafire and it still gives me this error:
The website declined to show this webpage
HTTP 403
Most likely causes:
•This website requires you to log in.
What you can try:
Go back to the previous page.
This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.

It works just fine for me too. I just combined Chromatic3.7 rom with httclay's theme by changing the framework.apk and the services.jar files. I also deleted some system apps as well as added a couple of my own. I also put my own bootanimation.zip on there and it works fine.
My first successfull update.zip
Ok so I have messed around with this a lot and I have successfully created a update.zip rom that runs stable. I decided to go with the Chromatic 3.7 rom based off of cm-5.0.8-DS Stable. Feel free to download this and give me your feedback. I take no credit for this rom what so ever. All of the credit goes to Chromersmith and the other devs that made this, not me! This rom is only 1mb larger than the original, about 59mb. What this rom includes:
-reverse nexus style bootanimation (added by me)
-Stock ADWLauncher.apk from cm-5.0.8-DS Stable (has the nexus style launcher, but isn't all themed up. It runs smoother because it isn't as much of a system hog. Added by me)
-apps: Mytouch Music (came with rom not added), 3D Gallery (removed Gallery for same reason), cachecleaner (great for freeing up internal memory), Wireless Tether v2.0.2 for eclair, and of course all the regular stock system apps like YouTube, etc.
And of course you can modify this and re-post your own results as well the same way I did. Isn't that the whole point of this thread?
IMPORTANT! Make sure you read the Chromatic 3.7 thread to get all of the requirements and settings correct after flashing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679135
I take no responsibility for anyone that breaks their phone because they don't know what their doing!
And of course enjoy:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1zzhoj32oqw
I just finished my second update.zip
Ok so I put a lot more work into this one than I did the first one. This is based off of the CM-5.0.8-DS Stable rom+gapps. I got sick of having to flash the gapps seperatly after flashing the rom, so I just added them in.
-Added the Multitasking OC Kernel and a lot of other things like a black status bar mod, and a custom ADWLauncher icon.

}
-Added other icons to stock apps like music and a few others that I can't remember right now lol.
-Removed the stock Cyanogenmod boot animation and replaced it with the reverse nexus style one (takes up less memory and boots faster, really fast!). Once you get it flashed and get everything set up, reboot your phone and watch how fast it boots up. Mine boots in about a 30 seconds once the boot animation comes on.
Apps included:
-3DGallery (Default Gallery, removed Gallery to save on internal space)
-CacheCleaner (Good system cache cleaner to free up that internal memory!)
-New Phone.apk added from Chromatic3.7 rom (looks very nice btw)
-Wireless Tether v2.0.2 for Eclair roms.
Requirements:
-Danger SPL or Engineering SPL:
If you do not have these or know what they are then do not flash!
-I highly recommend that you have a swap partition of at least 32mb:
If you want this rom to run smoothly, or enable compcache under spare parts app.
Instructions:
-Do Nandroid backup!!!
-I recommend a wipe if your coming from anything other than cm5.0.8-DS based rom, otherwise, just flash it, and then run fix permissions!
-Download and flash as normal:
It will say welcome to cyanogenmod 5.0.8 DS! Do not be alarmed, this is not a stock version of his rom! I did not want to take the credit away from Cyanogenmod and his team for this rom, since I am using so much of it!
-SetCpu:
Install SetCpu. Run app and select auto detect speeds. The kernel on this rom will allow you to overclock way faster than you should. I can run this stably at 614MHz max, and 245MHz min on ondemand. If you go more than this, your phone will probably lock up, and you will have to pull the battery out just to reboot.
-SpareParts:
After Flashing you must change the clock and date color under spare parts found in the settings menu. I changed everything to white because it's a black status bar, but change to whatever color you wish. Also change the Carrier PLMN label color, and the Carrier SPN label color. The only color I change under the notification settings is the Notifications ticker color. Set window animations and transition animations to fast! Check fancy input animations and launcher in memory.
-ADW settings:
Under sreen preferences set Desktop scrolling speed to 0, it's silly fast! Set Desktop overshoot to 50. Select orientation sensor and auto stretch.
Under UI settings check Hide AllApps Bg and Hide AB Bg, and this will make your launcher look much better. Uncheck scrollable widgets unless you use them. Select whatever else you want, I like to select Hide icon labels and closing dockbar as well. The only one I don't check is the tint ab.
Run Firerats Patch:
Download and run Firerats Patch. This will patch things like facebook sync, enable swap partition, and a lot of other things. Dowload and place the fr-patch133.txt file on the root of your sd card. Go to terminal emulator and type "su" and press enter. Type "sh /sdcard/fr-patch133.txt" and press enter. This will bring up a list of commands for the script, along with an example of how the script works. Everything should install correctly unless your don't have a swap partition on your sdcard then it will not install swap. Everything else should install just fine. Once it finishes type "reboot" and your all done! It will take a long time to boot as it is finishing up all of the installations. Be patient and do not interrupt it by rebooting or powering off your phone!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=348484&d=1277328643
Make sure swap or compache is working in terminal emulator. Type "su" and press enter. Type "free" and enter.
I have put a lot of work into this, so that I can use this as a daily driver rom, until a stable froyo release comes out. This rom is really fast once you get it set up correctly. I mean let's face it, we have no idea how long it will take for froyo 2.2 to be realeased. So until then, let's keep on modding!

Set up the software:
Extract the Odin3 v1.85.zip
Run odin3 v1.85.exe
Make sure the following boxes are checked (they should already be checked):
Re-Partiton, Auto-reboot, F. Reset Time
Click PIT and select the victory_8G_100528.pit that you extracted from the Odin zip.
Click PDA and select SPH-D700-EL30-8Gb-REL.tar.md5
Put your phone in Download Mode:
Make sure the USB cord is unplugged
Remove the battery and microSD card
Plug the phone into Computer (the phone may display a battery on the display this is normal just ignore it and go to the next step)
Hold down the "1" key and the power button.
The phone should now be displaying a Yellow Triangle with Downloading... (see end of post for image of download mode)
Under ID:COM, the box should turn yellow and contain the com port. If it doesn't see Troubleshooting at the end.
Odin should now look like this (screenshot shows EB13 but is the same for EL30):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Full-size Image
Now you should be able to click Start.
Your phone should try and auto-reboot when finished.
The phone can't boot normally without the battery but you can safely unplug it from the computer install the battery and turn it on.
You phone should be working 100%!
This has worked on numerous phone that have partition issues, intermittent booting issues, and many other file system issues. This also fixes the Samsung Logo disappearing from boot.
While some people claim that the re-partition and time reset should not be checked, this guide is designed to fix ALL problems. While using Odin on your phone has some inherent risk and is slightly less risky to not re-partition the phone some phones will not be fixed without this and that's why it is included. You can try following the above steps and only checking "reboot" but you may have to reflash and check the boxes in the instructions if you phone still has problems.
Troubleshooting:
Phone not getting in download mode
While holding down 1 and power insert the battery before trying to connect the USB cableOdin isn't detecting the phone?!
Try a different USB PORT on the computer.
Normally only the USB port the drivers were installed to and the phone was plugged into when they were installed will work (easily anyway)Try a different USB cable
If you are using the stock cable it is almost certainly NOT going to work. You can get a cheap BlackBerry USB cable off of Amazon for a couple bucks and works like a charm.Uninstall the drivers, reboot, and reinstall the driversTry Odin v1.61It seems frozen and hasn't made any progress for 15 minutes
factoryfs.rfs takes awhile but if it stays on that for longer than 15 minutes unplug the phone and start overIt started flashing but part way through the download mode screen went away and it just shows a color (can be different colors each time)
This means that it got disconnected during the transfer. Try again if that doesn't work try a different USB cable. You get a big red failed and tried the above steps.
Before you try to reflash make sure to copy the log that Odin makes in the bottom left hand portion of the screen so we can help you troubleshoot and then post in this thread.Still not working?
Try this tar SPH-D700-EC05-8Gb-REL.tar provided by K0nane
Here is a picture of Download Mode if you aren't sure what it looks like:
This has worked on all phones that were able to get into download mode. If this works for you or if you have issues let me know! You can message me on Irondust formerly Fossnet in #epic my nickname there is Cyc

Special thanks to K0nane and iNsAn|tY hosting and providing the EL30 tar and Odin.
Even though there are other guides how to do this I wanted something that was a little more concise and easier to follow. If you prefer qbking77 made a How-To Video to restore your phone. He uses different files and such but the end result is hopefully the same so check that out if you prefer or if you are confused and want to see the steps.

Heimdall Section for users having trouble with Odin or do not have Windows PC will be added shortly. Below is mordant23's post that I am putting here in the mean time. My post will feature the gui as the main interface and give options for all supported operating systems. Until then thank you mordant23 for allowing me to use this in the opener:
mordant23 said:
I had to flash back to stock after I switched to Linux. I couldn't find an easy guide. In case this helps someone else, below are the steps I took. If this is useful, could this be added to the original post or would it be better if I start a new thread?
The steps should be adaptable to OS X, but since I don't use OS X I can't really write instructions with confidence. Perhaps someone else can?
Note: Everyone's linux distributions are different. For the instructions I'll use generalized descriptions of steps. The only specific instructions I'll give is for using Heimdall. I am not a linux guru nor am I an Epic 4G expert. The only wisdom I have is 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything else.
The steps are pretty easy. I'll give more detailed explanation afterwards.
0. Download tar and pit files listed in the original post
1. Install Heimdall
2. Understand how Heimdall linux process differs from Odin windows process
3. Boot phone into download mode and connect to computer
4. Push files to phone with Heimdall
Step 0: Download tar and pit files
Pretty simple. Unpack those bad boys. Put them all into one folder nice and cozy neat like. That's right. The pit, modem, and completely unzipped files all in one folder.
Step 1: Heimdall is your friend
There is no Odin without Windows. We must turn to another Norse god, Heimdall to help us out. Heimdall is an open source project to replace Odin. There are ports to Windows and Mac OS X. The Epic 4G is not officially supported but many people have used it with no problem. I personally used linux mint 11 with an almost bricked phone with no problem. Use at your own risk.
Install Heimdall
The latest version at this time is a command line only version 1.2.0. The GUI for previous version 1.1.1 looks easy enough if you want to use them, although according to reports it may not work as well as command line. For the instructions I'll use the command line because I think it makes it easier to understand how to match files up to the different fields.
Since your linux distros are different, I will not go into any specifics on how to install.
Step 2: Understand how Heimdall differs from Odin
Difference 1: Don't need no stinkin' Samsung drivers (unless you're using Heimdall in Windows). "But what about those drivers..." Zip it! You don't need 'em.
Difference 2: Unpack the tarball and unzip the pit. The individual files in the tar, the pit file, and the modem.bin file should all be in one folder. The major difference with Heimdall and Odin is that with Heimdall, you specify how the files match the partitions. In some respects this is easier because if you don't need to repartition, or if you only need to push a particular file, e.g. the modem, you can do that. The trick with the command line is to know which files match the command line switches, e.g. --modem modem.bin, --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs, etc.
Step 3: Boot phone in download mode and connect to computer
Open up keyboard and hold 1 while hitting power.
Connect phone to computer.
Step 4: Push files to phone
Open terminal window in the directory with all the files. Use cd if necessary to get to the folder.
The general structure for the heimdall command is:
Specifically for the SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar and victory_8G_100528.pit listed in the original post on this thread:
Capitalization is important. I don't know how many times I messed up because I didn't type Sbl.bin with a capital "S".
If you use the gui, just make sure you specify which files go in which fields. I don't have the gui front end so I have not tested it, but it looks simple enough.
If everything works, then you'll see the progress as heimdell copies everything. If something is not right, then you'll get an error message.
Heimdall reboots the phone when it's done.
Please let me know what you think. Suggestions always welcome.

What is it saying? It shouldn't take that long. Do you see the blue progress bar on your phone?
I was going to mention that it froze once when I was trying to do it and I just unplugged my phone and took out the battery and restarted and it went through.

Yea still has the blue progress bar odin says factoryfs. I actually thought it might be frozen. But i started to ask how long it would take and it jumped forward some more. And now it just finished as I'm typing this. Which it won't boot stuck on the samsung boot screen just keeps vibrating gonna try again.

Yeah try again. It takes a few minutes of factoryfs due to it pushing 258MB to the phone but shouldn't have taken 30 minutes.
Now this can't fix your phone if it has hardware problems but should fix everything else. Let me know how it goes. My problem with it freezing was before it started push stuff to the phone.
The only other thing I could think of and didn't even question was your computer using a USB 2.0 port. That's the only reason I could see it taking so long to transfer data to the phone if it was Using usb 1.0 or 1.1
Finally gave up on eb13 after redownloading the tarball and still not getting anything. Tried a di18 tar and it worked first try. Trying to odin from there to eb13 seems to be slow flash and then not working right still.

IF DI18 works you can let it OTA update to EC05 the same way EB13 would. I used EB13 because there is no OFFICIAL EC05 tar available presently but any of the full tars should work. Any reason you are trying to tar to EB13 in particular if you got DI18 working?
I don't remember where I downloaded EB13 from I just looked for a link when I was posting this How-To. You might want to try finding an EB13 tar from another source and see if that resolves the issue or redownload the EB13 tar. My EB13 tar has an md5 of b9b14611dcde5fbe586fdc242315b92b and I know it works on my Epic. You can use HashCalc or some other program to calculate the EB13 hash.
I updated the EB13 tar link in my original post. You may have to refresh your browser to see it http://www.multiupload.com/3YPCROH00T
You can try that.
No reason in particular for wanting to go to eb13 just thought it strange that it wouldn't work and wanted to keep trying.

I appreciate you trying. If you want you can try the new link of EB13 I posted and see if that works. I am downloading it now myself to see if the hash check matches what I have or not.
I made a video showing how to do this. You might want to link it in the OP:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ2g6J1JgjU
Also, a link to my other how to video thread:

Oh and just for future reference, a post like this doesn't belong in the development section. It goes in to the general section.
Yeah I am going ask impaler to move it for me b/c I didn't mean to post it in dev just had a few too many windows going when I was putting it together. Thanks for the video link I'll add to OP with credit of course
I verified the new link has the correct md5 so it should work.
Very good directions.... should be added to the Other thread we have about ODIN though...
This will also bring back your samsung logo if you repaired your epic after a visionkernel brick but lost the samsung logo..

New Rom: 2.2 V2.5 #4325

as we know Mega is dead..
and at the moment it looks like fileserver is going the same way..

I suggest you load barsuk_CWMRecovery first, its down in the 2nd post..and do the usual wipes that you should do before flashing a rom..
Just a quick note, hopefully will save others some time too..
I think if you just went ahead and flashed the zip from the sdcard..
and now got 'android' loading with blinking cursor and no further..
For the hell of it, I did the same and got the same result..
The download is not a flash-able zip straight from the sdcard..
read further down for instructions
Then I went ahead and used the USB method..

No drama.. flashed and working fine.. just no camera at the moment.. I might play with some of the uboot's to see if it makes a difference.. but for now if you want your pad back.. I suggest go the USB route..
if you need a cable.. I use the same cable that comes with the usb cooling fans,
that power the cooling boards that people use under laptops.. Make sure you load the drivers or your computer will not recognize the pad.
Follow SmaRkieS thread and you should be fine..
If you cant burn the main android image using USB method.
You can try the MicroSD card method, but this is only applicable if your tablet will display the right uboot versions under the InfoTMIC start up logo.
@dyfren What does file zSYS.img?
I would say this is recovery.. I flashed it into this section..
hope this helps..
Will play over the weekend with it..
but at this stage running real smooth..

i had a go following the guide and it was fine until i got to flashing the actual Android image, (number 19 in the Guide). PC does its bit, then tablet comes up with "flashing/updating linux" (first bit tablet does) or something like that but the progress bar always stays empty, left it for 10-15 mins and still hadnt moved. tried the version in the guide and the version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067746
also tried SD card method, comes up with "Updating image hRamdisk" and a dead progress bar.
Which version of Android did you use at step 19?
Thanks for your help so far, seems to be getting there

@hunterx: 4325 is working very fast. IT won't shutdown when in standby but drains battery faster.
Someone can explain how to modify the firmware to support the 3G _Barsuk_ as he had done?
Thanks for the new ROM, just installed USB method, works fine.
Generaly looks very "snappy" for a Pad with only 256mb of RAM.
Camera "force closes"; Youtube works fine, and Wifi also.
I'll keep posting as long as i play with it.
Sheers
anyone got USB1 or USB2 readable?
when I plug them in I am getting "preparing memory device" then "memory device ready for remove"
To me, this is saying that it see's it.. but for some reason is calling to unmount it straight away..
I would say it is fixable as we had a similar problem on other Roms.. its just setting up the right command..
I have loaded a mix of drivers in to the system/lib/modules...but no success..
Then tried to use terminal but not getting access in to the root..
I kinda need to learn a few more commands in terminal..
(Back to DOS days..)
is there a cheat sheet around for the basic commands?
was playing with the aps2sd.. got the sdcard formatted with a sd2ext
But its a no go at the moment.. as even with TB backup
This Rom is not mounting into it..
As said before, I can't even get script manager to load up so can't load V6 scripts..
Maybe someone will have better luck then me..

question about the flash
Last time I flashed is a while ago so dont know if im doing things right.
So ive got a few questions before I will flash
On startup my pad shows 0.6.1.2. (587) at the right bottom
So can I skip the uboot part of the SMarkies guide?
The folder of 4325 contains more files than mentioned in the guide if i'm correct I only have to use : Kernal, user, system and ramdisk? Please confirm?
Do i have to use ramdisk in 4325 folder or the one mentioned in the Smarkies guide?
Your advice please have to use my pad on christmastrip for my kids so I cant risk to brick it
It's not a problem with this Rom, I also faced the same with previous versions and stock Rom, any of you guys face accelerometer axels inverted when playing games like Raging Thunder or Labyrinth? When bending down turns right and bending up turns left.
Strange, it happens with all games and still can’t find a solution.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Try this patched lib.
View attachment libreference_ril.Universal.zip
Is new solution for 3g. It is much easier. Who want may create update.zip for CWM.
Just replace original lib and set permissions to 644 (owner root).
EDIT
Some patched binaries and libs: View attachment patched_binaries.zip
Include wpa_supplicant with ad-hoc (not tested), vold with ntfs support (need to load kernel module first), ril libs with disabled check for modem model (for gsm only, not for cdma).

Flash all the files as per no:18 of the guide.. but use the ramdisk that comes with this package - dont use sMarkies at this stage - I flashed it to see if any difference but it only was for reading of the USBports.. the one with this package is stable enough

as usually people only brick on the U-boot flashing.
just take your time.

[HOW TO] Root Nextbook8 Premium (and install market app) [UPDATED 1-17-12]

PLEASE BE ADVISED: THE AUTHOR OF THIS POST NO LONGER PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THIS THREAD. HOWEVER YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOMED TO CONTINUE USING THE FILES AND METHODS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION. GOOD LUCK!!
INTRO: For all those searching the internet trying to find answers as to how to gain root on your Nextbook8 Premium and also gain access to the wonderful android market from which we were greatly deprived (as is the case with many low-priced tablets these days), the wait is over thanks to a certain someone who goes by the name of DEVMONKEY. Of course I take absolutely NO CREDIT for this and only took the liberty to re-write it thus adding a little more detail to the process. Enjoy!!!
DISCLAIMER***I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS PARTICULAR ROM WITH MY N8 WHEN I HAD IT BUT AS THE PROCEDURE TO FLASH IS STILL THE SAME ALL SHOULD GO WELL. HOWEVER, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAPPEN IF YOU USE THIS AND DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE. PLEASE FOLLOW ALL STEPS CAREFULLY***
[HOW TO] Root and install Market on your Nextbook8 Premium
UPDATE: This is post has been updated with a new rom to replace old one. Method of flashing is still the same so no worries. All those who want to upgrade to this rom from the one I previously posted in this guide when I first wrote it can just repeat the steps over again with the new rom package.
This rom is based on Samhain's release: SamDroid v1.13
Modifications (mostly GUI / cosmetic tweaks):
1.) cifs.ko / slow-work.ko / nls_utf8.ko are in /system/lib/modules and can be loaded using Mount Manager app from the market. This will let you mount CIFS/SMB shares to the device.
2.) Honeycomb-like launcher and updated GUI icons. (you can change it to any Launcher you want)
A couple of things to note once you have installed the rom:
- It starts up in Italian, so open Android settings "Impostazioni" and go to the "Lingua e tastiera" setting, and change the "Seleziona lingua" to your preffered language.
- I've put a few wallpapers in /system/media that you can set full screen by going into Live Wallpapers and using the "Multipicture Live Wallpaper" set them to the screen.
- There are a few things (widgets) on the homescreen that don't work after initial boot, just remove them and add back whatever you want to the homescreen.
- Sleep of death issues seem to be fixed, and the camera works (Camera app works, but Skype and Fring don't work yet...).
- You can also grab Adobe Flash 11 from the market and it'll work correctly.
- This release boots MUCH faster, and is even more responsive than before.
- There is a cell standby issue that drains the battery more in theory so if you feel like that is happening with you just delete the Phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk from /system/app. You can use ADB or you can use Root Explorer to do so. You will likely have to force a reboot because you'll start getting repetitive force closes once you do so, but it won't hurt anything. Once you reboot, all is well.
VERY IMPORTANT: After installing custom roms that also flash a custom recovery your N8 may reboot into the custom recovery. If this happens hit reboot system and only reboot system.
Download new rom from HERE and extract (using winRAR preferably) to your desktop or anywhere you choose. Location doesn't really matter for this guide to work.
NOTE: If you have anything you care about (like apps, notes etc.) on your N8 make sure you back it up now.
Step 1: Turn your N8 off.
Step 2: Press both Volume buttons down and plug the USB cord into the N8.
NOTE: On your screen you should see a bubble pop up in the lower-right corner saying "Installing drivers". Most likely it will say it can't find the drivers. This is normal. Continue following the steps to install the missing drivers.
Step 3: Open the Device manager by typing mmc devmgmt.msc into your "Run" box on XP or search box in start menu on Windows 7 and hitting enter (you can also find Device Manager in your Control Panel options in Windows 7).
Step 4: With your N8 still in an off state and plugged in via USB you should see a yellow exclamation symbol somewhere next to "Unknown Device" in the list of devices in the Device Manager. Right click on it and select "Update driver software".
Step 5: Now it will prompt you to choose how you want to search for it. Select "Browse my computer for driver software" and it will bring up a window for you to navigate manually to the driver location which is in the "drivers" sub-folder in the NEXTBOOK8ROOT folder. Select which ever system you have (32bit or 64bit) and then hit "OK". You might go thru one or two prompts before it actually installs. Just "OK" everything and you should be fine.
Step 6: Once the drivers are installed you are ready to flash. Go into the root of the NEXTBOOK8ROOT folder and select RK29update.exe (right-click for Win7 users and Run as Admin).
Step 7: Now you should be at the interface of the program and at the bottom in bold words it should say "FOUND RKAndroid rock usb" (if it doesn't then it mean the drivers probably weren't installed correctly). This part is VERY IMPORTANT!! Make sure all of the boxes on the left are checked (should look like the pic below). The one at top is the one usually missing a check and would need to be checked by you.

}
Step 8: Once all boxes on the left are checked you are going to click on "EraseIDB" at the bottom and let it complete. Once that finishes click on "Run" and you will see a series of commands running in the right window pane (see pics below). Give it some time as it will probably take a few minutes. When it's done it should look like the second pic below.
Once the process is finished your NEXTBOOK should reboot into the recovery and reflash the OS. Congratulations!!! You now have an affordable rooted tablet with access to the Android Market!!

I signed up, so i can say thank you. this worked perfectly.. i was skeptical and scared i'd ruin this tablet, as i got it as a gift, and was obviously disappointed to see no market on it, but this worked. thank you.
How about Nextbook Premium 7?
Thank you!
This worked great, I was able to get the android market installed and working.
Android version?
What version of Android does this install?
Cheers, Greg.
It's work, your are wonderful,thank you Sunnyboy167
Great job! Good to have root and Market working. But anyone else get FC when opening Camera app?
Perfect! I have rooted many Android devices and this is one of the easiest ones. Just read the directions carefully and you'll do fine.
Hopefully someone will release an ICS update for this device soon..after using my Galaxy Nexus, Gingerbread seems so...obsolete.
I'm glad you enjoyed this info just as much as i did
To everyone YOU ARE WELCOME but please....the best way to thank me is by hitting the thank button at the bottom right of my post. Thanks!
@xxProphecyxx - here is a link for the nextbook7 http://gunnersbarn.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/how-to-install-android-market-to-nextbook-premium-7/ I don't see any root method listed on the site but im sure there is one out there if you want to root it too. Or you can even take a chance if youre brave and use a one click root based on the android version you have.
@ghi07 - All this method does is re-install the OS (which is Gingerbread to answer your question) with market and superuser.
@dalerious - I'm sorry but I don't have a Nextbook anymore but if I did I would definitely try my best to help you. Try doing the entire process over and see if that works. Good luck!
THANK YOU!!!!
I was about to throw this tablet out the window!!! Followed the instructions and it works perfectly!!!! Thanks SO SO much!!!
Thanks to you I had a very Merry Christmas haha thank button has been pushed repeatedly!

Hi mellomade,
Thanks for this ... I'm using another phone now running Lollipop, but still have the A760 running unofficial CM11.0. as a backup, I've downloaded all files, and will give it a go at a later date ... I'm between cataracts eye operations right one fixed, left should be done soon, I can't get new reading glasses until then, so I'm struggling with anything close-up right now. ...Jack

mellomade ... The A760 has always worked well for me, I wouldn't scrap it, I only have the newer one because it came as a present ( so far it's been equally as good).
I've been studying the instructions, and guess steps 1-9 install the new TWRP recovery, the new ROM installation is then normal TWRP procedure.
I do have TWRP recovery v.2.6.3.0 already installed, but I'm sure it isn't compatible with latest android versions, so no chance of an install via that
It will be interesting to see if others from the old thread pick up your link. Thanks again. .. Jack

Great! Actually, Starting from lollipop, rom installs require larger internal space. Since we barely have sufficient space for system on our A760, the internal storage needs to be repartition (done by HDD Raw copy tool). Luckily the provided image 'Lenovo_A760.imgc' will automatically install the updated recovery TWRP 2.8.7 (compatible for the rom install) so we dont have to.
I do think others from the old thread already shifted to other phones
The QPST link given is no more. Any chance you have another download link? Preferably one without malware, as there seems to be some of them floating around.
Thanks

GM mellomade,
I have CM13 flashed OK now + the updated recovery, I'm finding heavy it on battery consumption,
mine loses 25% overnight with no additional apps installed as yet.
This is much higher than the unofficial CM11 Rom I have been using,
I've restricted some of google services in Privacy guard, this has helped a little
but I see no other way of reducing battery drain.
How do you find yours ?, and any suggestions please ?. ... J.

I was having the same experience too. I use Greenify App from play store, and put ALL apps into hibernation, except the one I required their notification to be alive (e.g; WhatsApp). That helps too. I guess that is one of disadvantages having an unofficial build, because it is not natively supported for our phone. Hence the high battery drain issue. On the bright side, we get to experience the latest (even though not updated) ROM :victory:

OK, Thought I may have a problem with ROM download, I did try a reflash which didn't help any. I'll try Greenify later, one thing I like about this ROM is the minimal system apps used (no bloatware).
My present phone (X-BO 06) running Lollipop, has a setting which allows the phone to switch off/on automatically overnight which is great for battery saving, I must see if i can find an app that does the same. Thanks again for the info. ... J. :highfive:

aah.. we do have that auto start & shutdown setting on our official rom (4.1.2). Im guessing you want that functionality without installing any new apps right? If not, you may look into Phone Schedule from play store. It support android 6.0. No prob

No no no. I think you may have misinterpreted my message there. I did mention, on our official rom, which is 4.1.2, the A760_1_A_2_0057_130828 updates from Lenovo. Sadly not on this unofficial cm build. However you can check out greenify, it does makes a lot difference if you hibernate unused apps. Hence, if this is your secondary phone, you may even hibernate all apps (which can significantly reduce battery consumption) without have to worry about any incoming notifications, am I right.
