This is not my phone but my friend's phone. I'm Captivate owner so I'm familiar with the SGS line and I've never heard of a issue like this.
This is a stock phone. No root and no custom roms. Completely stock. We tried to see if we could put the phone into download most via the key combo but no luck. He is going to bring it over later today to try the JIG which is a common thing to do for soft bricks in the Captivate forum.
Anyone else seen a problem like this and have any suggestions? Let me know. Thanks!
**UPDATE**
Now it will Randomly boot up. We tried a master reset but then it goes back into a boot loop. Then sometimes it will randomly boot but is not running well.
Super easy to fix...have you got it out the loop yet

So this morning I was checking out the new choices in my Froyo leak - rooted Captivate, I clicked on every one of them to see what it is and then I clicked on one that said something like user accounts, well ever since then my phone has been a black screen only displaying the top clock and a no signal bar. What should I do next? Unfortunately Im stuck at work with no programs. So Im wondering what would you do, which Odin should I use? Ill be checkin in cause at least I can do this and plan fixing my phone for later
Im guessing you tried pulling the battery?

sure did tried the reboot screen.
and the other thing, now the phone wont go into sleep mode so my battery is slowly dying too
try to boot into recovery and clear out the cache...
I did that too and it clears and then i reboot then it goes right back to black screen
The same thing happened to me, but I wasn't digging around in the settings. Like previously mentioned, I booted into recovery, and cleared cache/factory wipe, and it booted back fresh. Luckily, I had a Titanium Backup from a few hours before it happened, so I didn't really lose anything.
I had something like this too. Can you get into Download mode and use Odin to return to stock rom? It took me several tries before Odin worked.
Well I still haven't heard anyone who has completely bricked there samsung captivate yet so I think you'll be alright. Just to be the 1 click Odin when you get home.
I'm pretty new myself at this But I think the only way were really screwed Is if we kill the bootloader.

i will try when i get home, im stuck at work unfortunately, at least i know im not the only one, i was also fooling with settings
thank you
Theres been a few people that have fully bricked their captivates... Including me.
If you got your captivate within the last couple weeks be careful using odin with a froyo kernel. Check the Q&A thread for a post titled "phone-pc something" (Using my phone otherwise I'd provide a link)

lol its happened to many people, myself included.
It looks like I've done the impossible. I was running cm 7 gb on it and like a dummy went back to stock. Tried flashing continuum 3.1 and phone got stuck in a vibration loop.
Was able to get into d/l mode with jig and tried to odin stock again. Phone screen went all green and odin was stuck at rfs. Can still get into d/l mode with jig but now phone just shuts off while running odin.
I think my biggest issue is that I didn't follow the steps properly and repartition while going back to stock.
I just ordered an inspire 4g, hopefully I will be able to get the cappy up and running again so I can sell one of them later.
Anyone have any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Next time just use the one click package
Have you tried pulling the battery for a minute or so before putting the phone in download mode?
I've tried every method I could find. I tried with odin one click but don't think I have everything downloaded that I need to make it all work properly as far as the put files and everything.
I tried finding it to try it but have had no luck. When I tried odin I used a version that I've had since buying the phone. Its a very old version of stock that I think I got from ponack.net last yr some time.
thank you for the reply's. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

When I first replied about trying everything I hadn't read your full reply as i was using my wifes phone. After reading it on the pc I am going to give it a shot.
Will let you know how it goes, thank you for the help.
Tried method above with no success. No biggie, I'm going to send it to a guy to try to get it fixed so I have it as a backup in case I don't like the inspire.
The wife is ready to strangle me over this. Good thing she loves me.
Thank you all for your help. If I get it fixed and like the inspire enough I might end up selling it our keeping it for a play toy.
Thanks again.

Sounds like you're trying the wrong thing. The one-click odin stock doesn't require you to download any extra files, that's why it's a one-click solution. Everything is already packaged into the program, so all you have to do is connect your phone to the computer in download mode and hit the start button in odin, and the software takes care of everything else to get it back to factory defaults.

I am able to get it into d/l mode only using a jig but no matter what I try it doesn't seem to work.
I'm going to send it to Josh from mobile tech reviews, he thinks he might be able to fix it.
If not then hopefully I will have learned a lesson from this. That lesson being, don't mess up my inspire or I might end up single again. Not a big fan of that happening.
Thanks again to you all for your time and suggestions. People like you guys are the reason I like xda so much.

Weird, never heard of a situation where you could get into download mode but couldn't recover your phone. Keep us up to date about whether you could get it fixed, yeah?
So the backstory is when trying to flash UCKJ4 I attempted to use heimdall. I got the phone into download mode but I couldn't get heimdall to see the phone. Google says a battery pull is the way to go. I did that but was left with a phone with multicolor dots sporadically spread across the screen. This was my first flash so after that initial sickness in my stomach I got ODIN to see the phone and went back to stock (thanks gtg). After some more hacking around I finally got heimdall to see the phone to flash rooted kernel and then back to stock.
So the question is....What is the best way to get out of download mode should something like this happen again?
I found plenty of threads of how to get into download mode but not much on escaping if you don't want to be there anymore.
Pulling the battery is an easy way. I've done it several times.

That screen that your talking about, the multi-colored one, the only thing I can think of is flashing a leak without the bootloaders.
That's weird, but a battery pull while in download mode, but you haven't done anything, is completely fine.
I was sitting on the bus from a long training exercise in fort Polk. My boredom led me to install beats audio driver installer from the marketplace. After installation it asked to reboot. Now all I get is a black screen with the backlight on. I had no backup on CWM is it possible just to throw a custom ROM on it to get it to boot? I was still running stock just rooted.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Can you boot into CWM? if so how about a factory reset? If the factory reset dosen't work there a thread floating around with someones backup that you can restore, its stock with the persons boot pic or something of the like, Haven't had to use it, but have heard it save a few phones
Yeah I can boot into cwm. Thanks man I'll give it a shot in a couple hours when I get off this bus.

These backups restore through twrp, so you will have to flash that through fastboot in order to make use of them.

Welcome to the club that seems to happen a lot with this phone. "System must reboot" then bricks with backlit screen. Im litting mine sit and rest in bricked form until CM 10 comes out or I get bored with my CM10.1 Epic.
These guys all pointed me in the right direction but I just havent done it yet. You can also fastboot and use RSD lite. Be sure and let us know what works.

I Used TWRP method worked great I'll have to go donate next paycheck
I install slimroms 4.2.1 stable rom and went to reboot phone and now i cant boot it up. I tried getting into recovery or download mod by holding Home power and volume up or down but nothing happens. The screen just remains off. Is there a way around this or is it done?
Remove then reinstall the battery. Then try again. Cal you get into download mode?

search for how to fix a hard brick you mightve flashed a rom for a different carrier dude, something like that. if you cant boot into odin than its probably hard bricked. try leaving it for awhile and go back to it later, sometimes technology is weird like that. i doubt it though..

Well I'll be honest I looked at SD card and I flashed and i9300 rom on it. I've tried leaving battery and stuff but the phone just won't power on. Screen just remains off. When I plug into computer with battery out a red light comes on and phone tried to install a driver but doesn't install and Odin doesn't see. I have Samsung drivers installed so i don't know what it's trying to install. Am I screwed? Throw phone away? Lol
Google jtag. I don't think there's another way to get your phone fixed. Flashing an international rom is the surest way to hard brick.

I head jtag doesn't work anymore after 2.3 android or maybe it was the jig I was reading about.
