What's not safe about flashing radios / what are Radios?
I think that they are drivers about peripherals in the devices
Radio rom is the firmware that runs the phone, wireless and blutooth portions of the phone.
There are many different versions of Radios, and new versions are constantly released to improve performance for your phone. The extended rom does include operator customisations, and other programs to be installed when a hard reset occurs.
I know that on the Evo, if you pull the battery during a radio it will brick your phone. After choosing reboot from recovery after flashing the radio, it'll take you to a different screen while the radio installs. A lot of people don't read and freak out and pull the battery. You're supposed to wait for it to finish, then it'll take you back to recovery.
Don't know how it works on other phones, but read the directions thoroughly and you should be fine.

Thanks for explanation...
I dealt with this before youll lose your phone signal

I will be getting the fuze this weekend and have a few questions about it.
In the ROM development forum it seems that most ROM's are developed for the touch pro, will these work on the fuze or do I need to use one designed for the fuze?
Also is it worth it to upgrade the radio? And from my reading I'm slightly confused about upgrading the radio. I read somewhere that to upgrade the radio you need to security unlock the phone. Is this true for all radio's or just a few?
Edit: I read the step-by-step guide for flashing and it says either do it through sync or microsd. Which is safe/better?
hey, before you flash ANYTHING do hardSPL. then you can flash any rom made for the gsm touch pro or fuze. pretty much any rom in the rom forum you can flash. all the cdma roms are in that forum, so you dont have to worry about it. i havent flashed my radio, the radio that came with the fuze works great. some people claim that a different radio can improve your gps performance. i was able to fix my gps without a new radio. good luck
Thanks for the reply, I'll try to get the stock radio working before I even think about flashing it.
what do you mean by "getting the stock radio working"? as long as your getting a signal and placing/receiving calls its' working..
I know this might be a really stupid question but what is a radio and why do i need to flash one when i need to flash a custom ROM?

Radio
The Radio on a Hero is the part of the phone that deals with mobile connections. It handles talking to the GSM/3G network, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS. The radio contains software that controls how it operates, and newer versions of radio firmware are made available from time to time in #RUU updates. These updates are transparent to the user, although users who elect to install custom software can update their radio using an update.zip file made available by members of the modding community.
Flashing the radio is potentially risky, and you should NEVER pull the battery out of a phone that is #flashing the radio. If you do so, it is possible your phone will be bricked. Nevertheless, it can give improved battery life, signal strength and data performance, so is often done by users moving to later versions of ROMs.
Care should be taken to only #flash the correct type of radio to a phone. NEVER attempt to flash a CDMA phone with a GSM radio or vice-versa. It is likely you will brick the phone if you attempt to do so.
Samsung Moment 2.1 Bluetooth
I have a basic samsung moment with 2,1 and very satified except my voice activation for bluetooth. I understand the moment will not get 2,2 froyo which would solve my problem.
Me being a nubee and dummie, and just learning, is there a basic way to get this portion of 2,2 into my phone? Or do I have to do a full root etc, Thanks
I do understand that every (base) ROM comes with its very own radio firmware.
And none, AFAIK, is modding it as it's tightly tied to the GSM/CDMA/3G stuff.
But which one is good for a v2.2.1 based ROM working in Europe?
Or, even better, why not adding some lean documentation to each RADIO?
There isn't really a best 'one size fits all' you have to try them all and see which one is best for you.
I've been flipping from .44 to .48 over the past few weeks, other people say .47 is the best, it really depends on your phone, ROM, service provider and their coverage etc.
It only takes a couple of minutes to flash a different radio so go flashing...!

I don't think you are right.
I know that some radios come from other markets/areas and have never been pushed in Europe. And vice versa.
Moreover, testing that way takes much more time than the couple of minutes needed to flash them. You need to test handover among BTSs, roaming, Sim Toolkit stuff, incoming and outgoing SMSs and MMSs and so on. And in the meanwhile maybe you also need your phone.
For example, at the moment my radio (32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2) is giving me troubles with my ROM (Froyo 2.2.1 - DeFrost 6.0a) in 3G, while works just fine in 2G.
Is there anyone with some good feedback for Europe/Italy with the various radios?

Look, what beanbean50 said about radios is true - there really isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' radio. Some people, depending on their location (and network provider, signal strength and which wireless radios they use frequently), experience better battery life with different radios.
For example, I flashed the new 5.11.05.27 radio the yesterday, and my battery life dropped like a stone, but signal strength was amongst the best I have seen with different radios. To some people, signal strength is more important than battery life. To me, battery life is more important - so this new radio wouldn't do.
The radio you are using (32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2) is the radio of choice for some, but if you are experiencing issues with it, i would recommend you try the 5.11.05.14, which is also recommended by many (including me) for its all round performance.
You were correct in suggesting that it takes longer than a couple of minutes to test a radio, but not everybody uses features such as SIM-Tooklit (me, for example). If SIM-Toolkit didn't work properly in a new radio, but everything else worked fine, it wouldn't matter to me - its all about preference.
The only way to find out the best radio for you is to try some different ones. What's the worst that could happen (assuming you follow the correct flashing procedures and minimize your chances of bricking)?
Josh.
I have been flashing ROM's onto my Touch Pro for some time now and have obviously found great benefits in doing this. As I have been browsing the forums I have seen radios mentioned a lot. I have no idea how to install radio or what radio i would want on my device, is it worth me installing radio? Does it improve the speed or battery life of my phone?
Thanks in advance, I guess someone has already explained this but I haven't come across anything while searching
Currently running Energy Rom.
you flash it just as you would flash a rom, the good thing is that it doesn't erase anything from the device
Thanks for responding mate, what would I gain from flashing a radio though?
Wifi performance, telephone signal strength/call clarity, GPS connection, GPRS connection & battery life are just some things affected by radio version.
Flashing is simple & make sure you install matching rilphone.dll to Windows root folder.
Chasing the newest Radio versions does not always give best results. 1.14.25.05 is my preference at the moment.
check out radio thread link in my signature... search will bring up loads of info but you can waste a lot of time testing a good selection of radios.
Thanks mate! Exactly what i needed!
The biggest improvement is in gps reception. The original raph radios were complete garbage. Instead of waiting and praying for 30 minutes, you could get a lock in 2 minutes or so, maybe 75% of the time (without a-gps). Some of the other improvements are more subjective. Just get one of the most recent raph radios.
Actually I didn't know we can install external radio thanks I'll try to do.
When I've previously ROM'd my phones in the past, one issue I always came across was the radios getting out dated. I found myself scheduling a "once a month check" calendar alert to remind me to go out and find the latest radios to update.
Ugh, tedious... I hear the stock ROMs from carriers auto-update the radios? If not, is that what the PTL updates do?
Now that I am back to Android after a limited WP7 hiatus, I'm about to ROM again. But this time, I want to have these radios auto-updating with a custom ROM.
Is that possible? Or is that part of the big-brother stuff from the carrier's software that does that?
Using custom roms or stock roms will indeed update your radio.
However, if you've got a ****ty network operator, he might not update as often as needed. I was stuck with radio problems with some customs roms too...
Be careful, newest is far from always better with radio versions ! They mix a lot of parameters, sometimes you get a better signa, at the expense of a lot of battery life.

Interesting. Could you explain what a "network operator" is? Is that someone managing the ROM's radios remotely? Like, the person to donate to?
Who is updating the radios "for me"? I didn't think that was automatic with ROMs?

Been there, done that! lol I use have 3 or 4 radio packages on my phones, ready to install depending on where I flew to. "Damn, got a bad signal here. Let me try a different radio. Ah yes, there we go."
