[Q] How smooth is Honeycomb on the Motorola Xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm really really close to convincing myself to get a Xoom over an iPad 2, but what I'm really concerned with at the moment is how smooth Honeycomb is on the Xoom. Does it lag or stutter, maybe with a lot of widgets open? Does it slow down significantly with a lot of apps open and so forth?
Basically, how smooth is it compared to the iPad or iPad 2?

I find it very fluid. The only issue is typing lag, which can be very annoying. However, if you like to root and over clock, this is resolved by the new kernels - Tiamat and Launchpad TDR. This thing Xooomssss when over clocked.
I have not compared it to an Ipad 2.

I don think it's as fluid when scrolling from screen to screen as the ipad is. It's just as fast overall in terms of load times and stuff, but the ipad really excels at being very smooth.

IMHO it will only get smoother and smoother, now to the op, if you have an android phone it is pretty similar.

Very smoothh

It's cool. You have to understand that the iPad is smoother because it's just loading icons.
The Xoom loads way more things depending on the user. The scrolling is fast for me and doesn't lag. You will however see faster response from the iPad because it doesn't have anything intensive to load. Hope I explained it right.

True. The Honeycomb UI is probably requires more processing power. Some slight lag or juddering won't really be a dealbreaker for me though.

Good to bear in mind. For me, Android without rooting is like buying a Skyline GT-R and not tuning it. It's good, and it will get you where you want to go, but it's not all it can be.

Thanks. I've had the Nexus One, and now I use a Desire Z. Both are smooth, but sometimes a little lag comes out of nowhere. But it's tolerable, so no dealbreaker.
Of course, my Desire Z is overclocked to 1.4GHz, so it's silky smooth XD

I would say it is as SMOOTH as the iPad. Where it falls down a bit it on responsiveness. As several people have already posted Android is doing a whole lot more on the desktop than iOS is which accounts for a lot.
When you go screen to screen in the default Xoom launcher it moves buttery smooth, but a bit slowly for my tastes. Therefore I installed ADW EX as my launcher and turned up the screen transition time to maximum speed. Now it is smooth AND responsive.

Just got mine yesterday. I'm amazed at how sensitive it truly is. It's just as sensitive as any iPad i've ever fooled with.

Froyo vs Gingerbread - performance

Can anyone who has used both ROMs explain what the benefit would be for using the 2.3 roms? What exactly is better about it? I was thinking about trying it but dont want to bother if its not worth it.
Thanks.

What do you mean about what do you mean?
I am personally wondering on the inspire specifically if gingerbread is a great improvement?
Ehh, I ran the CM7 and it was cool, everything seemed nice and smooth...and the screen off animation never gets old but I like Sense and I find the custom sense roms to provide similar if not better speed and performance... then again there is no official GB for Desire HD/Inspire 4g, so... when that comes out we'll probably see a general overall improvement of performance etc
I'm not exactly sure if you would *need* it. We'll only *need* it when the Sony games/ports come into play that require GB. (Cuz we share very similar hardware with the Arc and Xperia Play)
Er...I mean I'll need it anyway. Can't wait to play some PS games on my Inspire
I just flashed Android Revolution.
I couldn't get back to CM7 fast enough. Lol
The only Froyo ROM that compares speed wise is MIUI. Other than that my phone ran noticeably slower. Just my experience.

The inspire plays ffvii at almost full speed depending on what is going on. That is on the stock Rom no root.

I ran CM7 for a few days but then went back to a Sense ROM. I did like a lot of the features on CM7 but I like the HTC apps and widgets even more. Plus, my battery life was even worse on CM7.
I don't really see much of a difference in speed at all. Both run very smoothly.

Yeah... but I've seen some demos of psx4droid, and I wasn't too impressed. I think the framerate drops would bug me... now if sony made an official emulator for the Arc/Xperia (which I believe they are) it should be pretty sweet at least that's how I recall the good ol psp days. Their PSOne emu was pretty good!
And back on topic, to OP, some people really like gingerbread's features etc. You should just flash CM7 and give it a spin for yourself. Just have a diff rom ready to flash if you don't like it. Bam. Gotta love Android
I noticed flash runs a lot better in GB and the browser on the CM7 is able to stay in desktop mode... Its the little things

My g2x browser smokes my vibrants

By a huge margin. Anyone notice how crazy fast this browser is? Blows my vibrants away..
I wouldn't say "smokes" it, but it is a little quicker. Although I've noticed a little choppiness when scrolling occasionally that my vibrant doesn't have. Definitely a better phone overall.

Browser

Is it just me or does the ICS browser suck?
I installed chrome, but it has the same issue where it takes awhile for it to be responsive.
ICS+ browser is a bit better, but not leaps and bounds.
Dolphin is ok, certainly better than above. Still doesn't feel very responsive or fluid though.
Is there any decent tablet browser available?

I'm having no love with the browser. Feels like browsing on a 56k modem using some ancient linux distro. I tried all of them, with Maxthon being the fastest. Unfortunately Maxthon became unstable within a day.
The browser is turning into a dealbreaker. Maybe my expectations were too high.
please tell me that they fix this!! a quadcore and browser cant run smooth?!?
i'm using chrome and dolphin HD and it seems to be working fine. why would you all use stock browser anyways?
From what i've read, the browser is handled using the Tegra 3's "companion core."
Because it's clocked at such a slow speed, it has some lag.
I have been using Dolphin on both my TF300 and TF101. I really can't tell any difference in the time is takes to load a page on both tablets.
I have tried other browsers but keep coming back to Dolphin.

Totally disappointing experience. Browsing is a nightmare on my tf300t device. it's slightly better than tegra 2 devices (acer a500 and asus tf100), however still not ready for prime time.

Stock browser is definitely sluggish. Downloaded Dolphin Browser for the first time and it works great, no issues here.
After testing just about every browser available, I have found that Dolphin and ICS Browser+ are the best options for me.
There is still an occasional lag when loading a new page where all input is ignored for upto 3+ seconds.
Flash in dolphin plays fine, but you cannot go full screen, then it crashes.
I and many others have same problem on prime (tf201)
and the whole tab isjust freaking slow.
I believe it's definitely asus crapware and maybe bad tegra3 optimization from asus.
as far as I know, htc one x (also tegra3) runs browsers just fine.
hell, my amaze 4g (dualcore s3 snapdragon) is just flying on ICS... while prime is dragging its tail
I'm freaking disappointed with asus... I really thought this will be my mobile workhores... but ist a piece of crap
Opera mobile runs flawless for me. My prime performance is great. no lag at all. UI super fluid & browser scrolling super fluid. I can't speak for some but me along with others have primes that work great.
Browser issues and other things are very well documented across majority of different devices on ICS. so not an Asus specific issue.
don't believe the hype. lol
I use the Chrome beta. Turn off page preloading and it runs fairly smooth. I'll give Opera Mobile a try later on, though; I like Opera on my desktop.
Just ran my TF300 through Vellamo. It scored pretty much exactly where you'd expect: slightly worse than the Prime, but better than most anything else. So, if a web benchmark is saying our device is great on the web... the issue must lie somewhere else, e.g. slow cache speeds (hypothetical idea)
I like Dolphin, but it occasionally crashes when I have multiple tabs open. However, when you reopen Dolphin, it forgets all the tabs that you had open just before the crash. Is there any way to fix that?
Mx browser no problems at all.....

I've installed dolphin and it works great, only thing I'm missingis is search on the site. If it's a big site I would like to search on a word on it! Someone knows how o do it on dolphins??

Yes I know this should be in apps and themes but everyone deserves to see this, especially us Tbolt guys.
This has been proven to be a placebo affect. I have tested it for almost 3 days now and it doesn't really help at all. Also someone mentioned in that forum it doesn't work properly with snapdragon processors because the rndg is different than others. If it does help at all I think it would help more for the lag that comes from not rebooting for a long period of time.

I have been using it with unsense and it hasn't really improved anything. No difference in performance without it either. Like I said it's a placebo caused by the fact that the tweak actually wakes your processor repeatedly which is why your phone seems to react better. You can use it if you like but it is really just a battery drainer. You can get the same performance increase by setting your governor on performance.

I ran it on nu sense and it drained my battery and noticed no improvement in speed. You see an increase because you want to see an increase. Its like throttle body spacers people puts on their cars. Suppose to improve performance and increase fuel mileage. They do no such thing but make a nice paper weight. People who had them swear they could feel an increase. One guy put his truck on a dyno and tested with it on and with it off. His results was with it on he lost a few hp. This is why butt dynos are so inaccurate because we make our selves believe we can see and feel a difference. When in fact there isn't.

Like I mentioned in my earlier post. It cause a wake lock on the processor making it wake repeatedly which is the likely reason that anyone notices anything. It in no way shape or form affects entropy which was the original intent of the app. Google has also stated that the very issue this is supposed to fix was actually fixed with the release of ICS. Try it on a gb rom and see if it actually works. Also, after you run it for a few days disable it and see if there is a decrease in performance. I've ran it for about three days and there is no difference without it running.

I have installed Seeder on my Gingerbread (SkyRaider Zeus) Thunderbolt and 4.2.1 Galaxy Tab 10.1.
In neither case has it improved speed, launching or operations.
I wanted to believe. In my testing, i call it wishful thinking.

Disappointing performance.

So I have the US version and I've had it for a while (about a month) and I'm really disappointed with the performance. Scroll lags, the notification shade pulls down smoother on a galaxy player (that has less than 500mb of ram and is single core) and the 3d gaming performance is laggy. Like GTA3 should be able to run on max settings! Just disappointed and expected more.

Try flashing Cyanogen Mod from the original android section. General ui is much snappier and it doesn't have game lag like all the 4.1.2 TW ROMs.
Samsung really dropped the ball with the 4.1.2 updates. A phone this powerful should not lag playing temple run.

Are you running it stock? Phone runs great with custom stock ROMs & Kernals, but everyone has their own opinions. The games i've played ive not have any lag, but i'm running a custom kernal and ROM. That probably has is the difference, but i'm not overclocked.
well there's only two things that are certain in this world.... no tech device is ever perfect and taxes always increase.
If you expect anything different you will always be disappointed.
That being said, I had ANdroid phones since the HTC Eris and they keep improving. S3 is really nice, maybe the best of this generation, but its not perfect.
Lots of people are looking for infinite gaming speed + infinite battery life... well the two don't go together. There are always trade-off. speed vs. power, vs. size, vs. cost.
Oh and by the way, multi-core is mostly a marketing gimmick. The GPU does most of the graphics work and most apps are not multi-threaded, so a fast single core beats a slower multi-core every time. It's cheaper to make a slow multi-core processor than to make a faster single core.
I also noticed lag on the device which i put off was caused by Touch Wiz. I confirmed this when i finally rooted and started trying different ROMs.
The lag is there in all TW ROM's for me; however if you really want to stick with TW, the smoothest running TW ROM I've tried so far is Goodness. That is what i'm currently using. I don't experience lag during gaming or Apps though even with touch wiz... so might be just your phone.
However, if you can do without touchwiz, the AOSP ROMs are like butter and i experience no lag at all. At least the 4.2.2 ROMS. I've tried Liquidsmooth, paranoid android, Pac-man and Chameleon.
Crazy I'm 100 % stock and my phone runs awesome! I don't do much gaming so I can't chime in on that but I don't have lag at all like you describe. Do you have a live wallpaper installed??
Sent from my GeeEssThree
I've tried a lot of the TW based ROM, Synergy, Hyperdrive , others and all the well developed one's run great for me. I don't see any lag. I also tried CM10 and no noticeable difference, I think a lot of the comment are caused by placebo effec, some people just hate OEM stufft. Also people will load up their home screens with 3000 widgets and say wow this phone / rom sucks, LOL m Then they load some new ROM with no widgets yet and go, wow this is really smooth....... until they load 3000 widgets and it sucks again. Hey , there really is a limit to performance on any phone.
