Mesmerize has a dull screen/whites aren't white? - Samsung Mesmerize

Any ideas why this might be happening?
I've compared it several new smartphones and the whites are definitely way off. Blue tint kind of thing.

its the only problem to the amoled display.. try using a voodoo kernel, they seem to fix some color issues

I've compared it to a blank Web browser on an iPhone 4 and the brightness and clearness of the whites don't even come close on this Mesmerize but I know the Galaxy S's screen is just as bright as the iPhone 4 screen, so I doubt it's an AMOLED issue. I feel it's a software issue.
I've made sure the brightness is up full so I believe I'm doing all I can in that respect.

Research voodoo color. You will see it's a known issue on some screens. Personally I don't see it.

I don't see a version available for the Mesmerize.

I only knew about the Color thing after you mentioned it and I then said it doesn't appear available for the Mesmerize.
This is ridiculous.

Just cleaned up a few posts here. Please avoid, trolling type posts.
Thank you.

There are roughly 5 different voodoo kernels available for froyo. A good place to start would be the stickied thread about kernels in the dev forum.

OTB has voodoo color.
MOD EDIT: ***********

The CM7 rom has color correction options that might fix the problem for you.

Request for a picture from someone who does not have backlight bleed

Okay, I know we have lots of threads with people posting pictures of their bleed screen. I want to request one member atleast who does NOT have bleed to post a picture of his screen here. I personally am getting a second G2x and since this is like my first phone in over 5 years, I'd like to have a picture ready for comparison when I get my replacement.
You could use this as a test page.
http://i.imgur.com/c4rkX.png
Alternatively, telekNesis has made a wonderful app for this exact purpose. Use that.
http://teleknesis.net/Android/APKs/ScreenBleedTest.apk
I've attached 2 images of my screen. One from far away, and one in close up. The camera brightness gets wonky when its far away, so a closeup is most recommended, and I'd like to compare this.
I would but my phone is the only camera I have at work
can post one in a couple hours
EDIT: See new pic

Thanks for the picture. But:
1. You are not in a dark room
2. your status bar is there.
We can't do an accurate comparison like that

Don't want to come off as an ass, but if you think a screenshot will show any display problems you need to think a little harder.
Thanks for trying to help Maris_

lol, @ screenshot, if only everything looked that black
Maris_ said:
I used SketchBook Pro and painted the screen black, set it as my wallpaper, used LauncherPro to hide the Navigation Bar, then took a screenshot in a dark room. As far as I can tell, I don't have any unusual backlight bleed. True, it isn't the deep black my Nexus One would have had, but considering this phone is backlit, I think I'm OK. How about this great development team?

I'm so excited to see the development thread going strong. It's making me love my Infuse even more.

i'm not sure i fully understand the purpose/use behind bln. can anyone point me in the right direction to find out how to effectively use this, and explain what it's for?
edit: nvm, i found some videos that explain it.
good that there is soo much cooperation. the kernels are truly community built.
One of the downsides of this phone is no notification light, but with BLN when you get a notification the bottom lights light up.

NoLED in the market also works great but may drain battery more quickly than BLN. Between the two, it certainly makes up for the missing notification led. I don't understand why Samsung is against providing a true led notification.

It's significantly higher drain than BLN.
on the topic of bln you can use tasker to turn on the led flash for notifications, it is a little obnoxious though.
Having no LED notification truly bothers me. That's one of my favorite features of my old X10.
But, am I able to use the Defuse kernel on GTG's Infused rom? Anyone tested/confirmed?

Screen is way too bright

My biggest complaint with this phone is that the screen is far too bright on its lowest setting, which I feel is a huge reason the battery life isn't as good as it could be. My iPhone can be turned down way dimmer than my Captivate. Is there anything I can do about this? Any apps or hacks that will allow me to dim the screen further than the OS allows?
--Thanks.
PS. It's rooted and all that goodness.
Trysome of the widgets from the market. I like the one from curvefish. Don't know if it will make it darker, but you definitely have better control over the brightness.

Thanks, I definitely like the added control with that app but it's still frying my retinas sadly.
You could look for a kernel with voodoo color. But you would have to use a custom ROM, I don't think the kernels that support it are compatible with a stock ROM.
Edit
You could also use darker, if not completely black, wallpaper and themes.
Screen filter app in the market works well for me

Switched over to the Talon Kernel, which seems to have a dimmer screen by default, but I don't see any options in the voodoo app for adjusting the brightness of the screen (just RGB and gamma).

Lower the gamma hack value. If they are at 0, 0, 0 now, try it at -30,-30,-30. It wrong change the color perception, just brightness. Play around with it and find what you like.
Sunglasses work also or you could get an iPhone.

[Q] What is MDNIE?

I have seanzscreams ICS installed and loving it, but was wondering what this is and if there's any advantage in using it.

Hi,
I have the same question and from my research it is some sort of display tweaking same as the Bravia Engine, only using this, you have a lot more options. Although in reality, I can't really find anything changing when i modify the settings...
mDNIe stands for mobile Digital Natural Image engine.
In stock galaxy S2 rom (at least my i9100 international), under Settings ->Display -> Screen mode, it shows a sample image and three preset profiles - Dynamic, Standard, and Movie. These adjust the brightness, sharpness, contrast on different screens/ in apps like camera.
Custom roms can always have custom settings for these display-related parameters of a phone.
I am not android developer, so I cannot tell you how to turn it on, but I think stock rom has mDNIe enabled by default.
How do you access the MDNIE options?
to access mDNIe options in my samsung galaxy s2
go to Settings ->Display -> Screen mode
i727 doesn't get this option I think, haven't ever seen it.

None of the crappy AT&T variants have this.
On the Skyrocket, just find "mDNIe Switcher" and install it. It comes with Seanzscreams Sky Ice rom. Not sure where to get just the .apk
It's available in CyanogenMod 10 and 10.1. I was tinkering with this today.

mDNIe is a display tweaking utility that is only useful if you had an AMOLED (LED) powered screen. Its useless for an LCD screen.

I didn't post wrong info... I just stated a fact. I know sgs 2 has an amoled screen... People asked what it is and i answered. mDNIe rebalances the chemicals in LED lights to change contrast, sharpness, blur effect. UI makes things sharper but might impact quality by missing MSAA (Multi Sampling Anti Aliasing) which now, in latest cm 10.1 you can turn on to avoid "pixelated curves" in letters and such. VT is more rich and contrast.. I think that one is from VoodooColor.
Camera i think makes the color level warmer. Every phone has different mDNIe modes. So just experiment.

Cm7 render effects (red mode) replication?

Does anyone remember cm6 / cm7 render effects color modes?
I'm particularly interested in recreating the red render color mode for reading at night.
I've searched high and low but so far no good results.
Please chime in if you remember the feature I'm talking about.

Another suggestion was "twilight" which I've tried but is really not the same.
I think some people have not seen how good the render effect is compared to apps that use a filter.
Anyone know anything about this?
