I updated to 2.3.4 on my i9020a Nexus S. My buddy tried to gtalk video chat with me and it says:
'tried to start a video chat with you while you weren't connected to WI-FI.'
Do I HAVE to be connected to WI-FI for video chat to work? I thought Video chat works over 3g?

By default your carrier has to allow it. However, there is a simple workaround for that if you are rooted.

Well I'm on AT&T using the Nexus S. To my knowledge, AT&T doesn't officially support this phone so I'm not sure what they do.

I'm guessing it's a default deny unless authorized by the carrier. If you can't connect via 3G just edit the gservices.db as described above and it should work fine.
seems like it. I edited the file and it works now. Thanks!
FYI: I did it over Sprint's 3G the other day and the quality was good enough.
mine works out of the box, tried it yesterday from car for half an hour video chating with my wife, quality was pretty good A/V.

How do we get native 3G video calling from our nexus s. My carrier is giving me (almost) free 3g video calling. And this is not like Fring/Tango. its over the UMTS network. My old nokia could do it. the Galaxy S can , So why cant the Nexus.

Didn't you read what the OP said? He has free/cheap 3G video calls. I do find it a real pity that you can't do 3G video calls with NS. I remember 3G video calls was one of the most hyped feature when 3G network was first introduced years ago. Many 3G phones with a FFC could make 3G video calls, it would be nice if you can make 3G video calls using NS to those 3G dumb (non-smart) phones.
True "3G video calling" isn't supported on Nexus S.... or any primarily US released phone.

i know it's not supported but as in Samsung galaxy S do, it must have a way to make it works, maybe changing ROM or something.
anyone?
BTW: the Google talk is very under quality, there are annoying "interference".

Man, people bringing old threads back.
Nexus S will do Fring/Tango just fine over '3G'.
The thread is specifically native 3G video calling. This feature is more popular/in use in Europe and Asian countries. That's why the real original Galaxy S supports this feature.
And No, the Nexus S does not. You will need to use an app like Fring/Tango/Qik/GoogleTalk to do Video Chat
my ns does 3g video calling through gtalk. tmobile disabled the 3g video calling feature so that only wifi video calling through gtalk only worked. but its really easy to re-enable the 3g video calling feature. and it works great(probably because of 6mbps+ data speeds over the tmo network in nyc).

Hi, a sales guy from HTC told me that native 3G video call need to be supported through hardware chip, and hardware in Iphone4 and HTC phones is not support for that although they come with front camera. The guy even told me honestly that only Samsung phone with front camera is supported in hardware level.
Not sure why Nexus S which made by Samsung is not supported.

even i am looking for the same thing native video calling as in INDIA its new thing and cheap too....
In India there are hardly people using Skype, tango etc...
i was going through XDA forum and i got this link

this might get the answer
I completely don't understand anything mentioned on this link but yes it clearly says activating SIP for ANdroid on SGS 2.
PS: I am noob if this is a solutions for samsung phone please update me about it as i have samsung Infuse 4G!
Native Video calling
Dear all,
I was trying to find the correct answer for the native video calling. I came across a really high tech thing for which we need a programmer and a 3G communication expert.
It goes like this.... There is a protocol which helps to communicate with the FFC and is based on the FRAMEWORK of the phone. In the framework you need to alot a space for 3G 324M protocol and the 3G expert will help the programmer to do so ........so that the voice call is integrated with the video in real time and with no lag!!
It's tough to do but do we have someone here who can do that in XDA DEVELOPER's?? or people are happy with the custom rom and Skype, oovoo etc??
Google talk......

It's not nonoheran fault..............google when launched gtalk app they mentioned it's a NATIVE VIDEO CALLING (through Gtalk).
he is confused.
but still not getting the answer ........ spoke to few people around the globe they say it's a tough job to do as they have to inegrate 3G 324M (video data calling)with H.263 (voice calling) in the framework.
for that we need java developer and 3G expert to work together.
hard to find above combination and even if you find they will not waste there time for us as every phone have different framework)
I am using samsung infuse 4g but thought would share my knowledge with you all so that if you people know someone like this (JAVA + 3G expert) you can get hold of him/her and get the things done!!
The other day me & my brother were able to video chat on Qik using our data plans. Last night we tried again & now neither of us can connect over data, just over wifi. We get errors saying unable to connect to server. It can't be a localized problem either because I'm in AZ & he's in TX.
I know they just blocked it for Google Talk video chat as well.
So, can you still connect using your data plan?
has anyone or will anyone else test this out for me? please and thanks
Same thing happened to me. It used to work fine up until i did a hard reset and then it stopped working. I did a search on qik's website and this seems to be.a.common problem with many devices.

HEY GUYS,
I just picked up a XOOM off of Craigslist. But when I got it, I realized it was Verizon Xoom. Which is fine cause I only plan to use it via WiFi. But I'm trying use Qik to video chat other Sprint friends and it wont connect.
So I was wondering if there was a way to root and load a Sprint rom which will work on the Xoom? Also, has the update been released that enables the Memory card port?
Thanks
No to the sprint rom. You and your friends need to get tango. Or they need to get vtok (while you can use google talk). If you guys want to video chat. 3.2 has microSD support.

Yes, Xoom can be rooted. Look in the dev section. However, the VZW 3g model has not had 3.2 release yet.

Is there a way to enable HD Voice (WB-AMR) on the Nexus 5? For some weird reason, the Galaxy Nexus is supported by Rogers for HD Voice but not the Nexus 5.
Some people here have figured out how to enable it on the Galaxy S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2287992
But I can't figure out how to access the service menu on the Nexus 5 on 4.4.2... Or maybe it is already enabled but I can't check it?
Anyone who can figure this out will be the star of XDA's Nexus 5 forum!

it works fine on tmobile. its obvious when its connected, and sounds wonderful. theres no service menu, its just enabled.
It works out of the box on Tmobile. As the previous guy said, it's really obvious if it works.
I'm surprised on T-Mobile's End I had a full size sim from my Nexus s cut it into a micro sim and i was surprised to see LTE on an OLD sim card also HD voice does sound amazing its like landline quality but sounds better! but when it drops to EDGE or GPRS it sounds like [email protected] but oh well i got HSPA everywhere.
HD-Voice is bounds better than landline...i've only had it work between my mom's windows phone and my N5 on tmobile...at&t sounds like crap, all the other phones sound like crap too. I hope at&t enables it soon so I can actually understand my girlfriend better.
Works out of box here on Bell. You have to be talking to other people with HD voice enabled phones. Whenever I phone my brother on his HTC One it sounds amazing..it puts land lines to shame.
I think it needs to be support also via your carrier... but I think most of the carriers have them enabled...

Rogers/Fido offers HD Voice but I think that they have to add support on a individual device basis. It supports the Galaxy Nexus, but not the Nexus 4 or 5!
This is why I believe that there has got to be a way to access the Service menu on the Nexus 5 and activate AMR-WB support. People can do it on the S4!

All solutions involving *#0011# and *#197328640# don't work. No idea what to do now :/
I was making some calls today, where I had LTE. The expected behaviour would be that the device switches to 3G for voice calls, but it seems to me like my N5 is using 2G. So it seems that despite being on a network which i know has working HD Voice, the Nexus 5 doesn't work. Bummer.
A lot of people claimed that HD voice is working for nexus 5. In my it did not (and my carrier supports this feature). Now, when android 5.1 released, there is an item in change log - provide support for HD voice. So no idea how this worked before, but will check it on 5.1 and hope it will work.

That depends on whether all the carriers can agree on what version of the RCS protocol to use.
AT&T is still using a pre-universal profile version of the RCS protocol.
AT&T is backing the newer universal profile version of RCS, but hasn't implemented it yet.
It would explain why they restrict their current version (Advanced Messaging and Video Call) to only work within their own network.

Never been able to use it, so I can't say.
Requires two AT&T customers with video capable phones (iPhones don't work as they don't support RCS at all).
My wife and daughter have iPhones, so we use Duo, which works great.
Not a fan of Skype and Facebook (which uses Skype on the back end). Crappy video compression when using cellular data.

Thing is I'm in Ghana atm. I'm on a plan where I can get free calls to other users over normal calls and same with video call without internet. Saves me data. Tried duo but horrible internet network doesn't help. Video calling Works fine with my note 3 but note 8 doesn't work.
