[Q] iPhone double tap sleep button flashlight - Defy Android Development

Hello all! There's a cool feature called springflash in iPhone that consists on double tapping the lock button and the flashlight turns automatically on, if you doubletap again flashlight goes off
I love this feature and have been searching for a similar thing or a "gesture maker" to turn flashlight on (or unless open the torch app)
can someone tell me any app they know either to do this or to enable small gestures to open apps like torch or directly turn on the flashlight? thanks in advance
I'm using last miui rom so the option of using the search button as a launcher of the app torch is not possible!

for the miui rom i believe if i remember correctly all you have to do is hold the home button and the torch will turn on for you. i was on the miui rom just about 2 days ago and did work. if not there are other apps that you can use as widgets and they automatically turn on the torch for you

I'm using MIUI ROM and holding down Home brings up "Recent Apps" screen, just like CM7.

On cm7 you can change what long press on home does, under cm settings
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

I thinks this is possible ONLY in custom ROM, Android System does not permit to any user's app to override Home or Power button,
bye,

You may have luck with the app called "Tasker" - Check it out

With CM7 you can define lockscreen gestures which can be used to toggle the flashlight.
I have setup a very simple gesture (looks like an upside down "L") for that. That makes the flashlight very accessible, though i does not engage accidently.
I used the built in powermanagement widget for the notification area to toggle the flashlight before i found that solution and this is a lot less of a hassle as i dont have to unlock the phone or pull down the notification area.

thanks for the replies! the torch thing of miui works sometimes but other times you mantain home button and it just flash 1 sec and goes off
If I can't find any solution and the problem of miui isn't solved I will go back to the cm7 and notification bar flashlight which is quite cool

[APP] Rotation Toggler

Rotation toggler is essentially an auto-rotate screen toggler application that allows you to enable or disable android's auto-rotate feature. This is useful especially when you don't want the screen to change its orientation when say..you're reading an ebook or browsing a site and don't want your browser to change its orientation. Just long press on the search button and select "rotation toggler" or launch the application in your app drawer and toggle the auto-rotation on or off. It is just that simple! Don't forget to try my other free apps. Ad-supported (requires and uses internet connection ONLY if you launch the app via app drawer).
I created this app out of a request from my friend who wants an app to easily toggle the auto-rotation in his nexus one. Thought I'd share this app with the rest of the world, i'm sure someone will find it useful. Enjoy
You can download Rotation Toggler along with my other android apps here:
http://slideme.org/user/mlbl
You know there's already a free widget in the market that does this. And it doesn't have ads.
It's called "Autorotate OnOff" by Curvefish.
Mine is not a widget, its a replacement when u long press on the search button. so its an alternative. For instance you're in adobe reader, you just long press, select the rotation toggler and you're done. With a widget, you'd have to press the home button, toggle the widget.
I wonder whether you could do that it woulden't rotate the home screen, bot like the browser (ect.) would? And so I don't have to switch manual every time.
buttom customization would be nice (maybe long home press) as search button is being used by couple other apps (Quick Settings, Voice Search)

Actually if i'm not mistaken the stock home screen for most phones won't rotate, at least my n1 doesn't unless you're using a custom home screen like adw or launcher pro. Also this is not possible to disable just one part of the system such as the home screen or the browser. Its either off entirely for all or none at all.
kkssgg > Can't be done for other buttons, apps are not allowed to use other buttons for long pressing as it interfere's with its existing functions (home screen long press - switch apps, menu long press - keyboard, back button long press - well nothing but so far its not possible to long press a back button).
Awesome app! Thank you very much!
Thanks! Don't forget to try out my other apps, I believe you will find them useful too. Enjoy

long press Menu = Search
never really understood the redundancy. (Well, I guess it's not redundant on the international version without the dedicated search button.)
Just to notify everyone that my android apps have been added to the android market since Nov 1st 2010. Search for "Malcolm Lim" and you will find my apps there. Enjoy

Show keyboard for me.
New version of rotation toggler 1.15 uploaded to android market and slideme market:
http://slideme.org/user/mlbl
New in v1.15:
- New main interface look from app drawer
- Option to display notification icon for easy toggling of rotation
- Fixed several bugs
- Added donate button for donations
Hit me up,
I have an idea for an update that I started to build with app builder, but don't really have time to learn app builder that well although I have a pretty good prototype of how I want it to work... Funny I was using the same rotate icon as your app
Maybe we can make some bucks

[Q] home button long press access flashlight on lock screen

Is there a way to launch flashlight/assistive light by holding down home button during LOCKSCREEN? I use nova launcher on my galaxy s3 verizon running jellywiz rls 5 and the nova launcher allows home button long press customization past the lockscreen but it would be cool to have long press home button customization. Just how MIUI has longpress button flashlight on its lockscreen
I don't know of anything but would love to have a feature like this.
Home2 shortcut is close to what you need. Don't know if it works from lock screen though.

Bump.
I have the same question.
Home button flashlight
Bump.
I also have the same question.
I'm on ROM BoneStockv1.6
All aosp roms have this feature, it's called lockscreen button actions. You can actually map almost anything you want to either of the 3 keys.
I know a few tw roms have included the home button flashlight feature as a toggleable option in the settings, but I have not seen an ad on mod for roms that don't support it.
all aosp roms do not support this, but i wish they did. most do thgouh.
theres an app where you can shake your phone to turn on the flashlight but i cannot remmeber what its called. it works from the lockscreen
I meant most, sorry..
wasnt trying to be a ****, sorry lol.
i was searching for this last night. just running an AOSP rom that doenst support this at the moment and saw thsi come up in my search.
theres probably a mod somewhere but i havent found it.
it hink if your on TW didact has a mod for this.
Which rom are you running that does not have it?
Pacman has it. You have to first turn the screen on, then hold the home button. Same to shut it off. I love that feature.

Anyone get widget locker to work with SGS3?

It runs fine but if I hit the home button, it bypasses the lock screen and just goes to my home screen. The power button works, its just the home button issue. Can anyone share their settings for widget locker or let me know what I'm doing wrong.

I've only been using Widget Locker for a couple of days but try this:
Go to the WidgetLocker app - Press the settings Icon on top right corner - Select Buttons & Inputs - Uncheck Allow Home Button.
See if that works.
I also have a question if anyone can help. How do I get Google now on the Jelly Bean Themed slider. I can get Google Now by setting the app in the unlock screen, but how do I make it look like the stock Google Now app?
Thanks

The slider I talking about is the slider to unlock the phone. You can chose from a list of slider like honeycomb, ICS, Jellybean, Sense, etc. I want it to look like my N7 tablet where if I slide it up, it goes to Google Now. I can still get Google now by adding the shortcut to google search, but I want the icon to look like the stock look. It's kinda hard to explain, sorry.

I think Home helper is for some launcher settings.
If you uncheck Allow Home Button under the Buttons and Inputs, then it should work, however it may be a bug that sometimes causes it not to work. I've noticed that widget locker acts weird if the phone is charging. I have only been using it for a few days so I'm sorry if I wasn't more helpful.

I had the same problem the other day. Particularly after I updated to 4.1.1. The lockscreen would unlock (once awake) by pressing home.
I solved it by using HomeHelper (widgetlocker settings -> advanced -> homehelper).
1) tick the "HomeHelper component" and choose "WL HomeHelper" as the default.
2) tap "HomeHelper's Launcher" and choose your default launcher (Touchwiz, Nova, AWG, Launcher Pro, etc.)
3) Make sure "HomeHelper Block Home" is checked.
4) (Optional) You can also choice "Block Home in other apps" to return to the lockscreen after opening apps from the notification bar or shortcuts.
HomeHelper worked fine for me, but I got the feeling it was slowing down my system a tiny bit. Most notably, the wallpaper would quickly blink every time I hit the home button (what is effectively happening is that the home button activates HomeHelper, that then activates the launcher). It was not a major deal but I personally found it annoying.
However, I may have stumbled upon the culprit behind all this: S-Voice. Once I upgraded to 4.1.1 I turned off the option to activate s-voice through pressing home twice (S-voice -> menu button -> Settings) because I was happy to use Google Now (aka Voice Search) instead. That is when I had the problem with widgetlocker's lock screen unlocking with the home button. After not liking HomeHelper's performance, I reluctantly went back to the default Touchwiz lockscreen (I maintained my custom launcher though, and reset the home button to default to it).
After Google Now failed embarrassingly to call the right people from my contacts list (most of whose names are foreign), I decided to go back to using S-voice. I reactivated the "press home twice" option. However, I still hated the "slide anywhere to unlock" Touchwiz lockscreen, as well as its inability to silence the ringer in one slide (you have to either hold the power button or open the notification bar first). So I went crawling back to widgetlocker for forgiveness. I activated widgetlocker (I did not meddle with the HomeHelper settings assuming those were already set), and later noticed that the lockscreen was not being unlocked with the home button, while the homescreen wallpaper was no longer blinking. I went into the homehelper settings and made sure it was turned off, and also made sure that the home button was by default linked to the custom launcher (not HomeHelper). I confirmed my theory by deactivating S-voice's double-press home option, and the problem above came back.
tl;dr. I theorize that the problem is caused by turning off S-Voice's quick-access option (double-press home). You can also use Widgetlocker's HomeHelper if you don't want to turn S-Voice back on. I hope my experience is not simply coincidence and someone could confirm this theory.
Found this thread because I was having basically the same problem. Widget locker's lock screen would be bypassed coming from sleep by single pressing home (power button from sleep continued to work normally). I could not fix this using any method mentioned here so far, except for enabling S Voice via double tapping home. I emailed the dev and hope it gets fixed, because I'd like to avoid the lag added to the home button by having double tap for S Voice enabled.
Anyone else have an alternate solution?

Oddly enough this fixed it for me too. I had disabled S-Voice yesterday and today noticed that using the home button bypassed Widget locker. I re-enabled S-Voice and all is back to normal. Hopefully the dev will be able to give us an answer soon.
Agh ...I was so excited to get back to WidgetLocker I got used to from my pevious phone, only to find out this little anoying thing. Are there any news, some reply from the dev ?
So I am using widgetlocker, and my home button only wakes to my widgetlocker screen (never see the touchwiz lockscreen). I have s-voice/double-tap disabled.
In widgetlocker settings, under "advanced" I have root checker checked, homehelper component checked, "select system home" is widgetlocker, and "homehelper's launcher" is the launcher I use (nova in my case).
Does that not fix the problem for you all?

Does your launcher blink every time you press home button while in the launcher itself ? If yes, then you know why it does not work for us.

No, these settings don't solve the problem for me. I messed with various combinations of the settings your talking about as well, but no matter what I still bypass the lock screen (and also experience a quick blink every time home is pressed, which would be a secondary concern). I'm also on the latest Cleanrom and use Nova.

Hmm, strange... One more setting I have: do you also have "appear on boot" checked under Behavior? Otherwise I'm stumped as to why it works for me and not you.
As for the quick blink, yeah, I have that too - I assume from widgetlocker being assigned as home, thus registering that before going to nova - but I hit home so rarely that I barely notice it.

Yeah have that checked too. Must be some setting slightly different somewhere though. Not that big of a deal, I've just been living with the slight lag on home press and sounds like otherwise I'd have to get used to the quick blink.
Btw never got a response from the developer so that's kind of disappointing..
It's working for me but I get the annoying flicker when hitting the home button as well. It's a drag for sure. Go Launcher is my launcher. Shoulda did my homework before paying for this one. Love what the lockscreen can do but has issues with the home button for sure

Lockscreen torch work around

One thing I missed coming to the G2 from AOSP ROMs on my DNA were torch quick toggles, with the screen on-- long pressing a nav key, or off--long pressing a hardware button. Don't know if the devs have these going on any ROMs around here, but I've come up with a little work-around that should work regardless of what you're running.
You'll need:
Tasker
Tesla LED
G2 Xposed settings
Secure Settings (or another app that turns off your screen)
For screen on
In Tasker, go to the Tasks tab and create a new task. Call it "toggle torch" or something. Add action-->third party-->Tesla LED-->Set: toggle. Hit Back. Long Press the task you just created, then hit the three-dot menu on the top right. Export-->As App. Name it something. After it creates the app, hit the little Android button to install the app.
Fire up G2 Xposed and under the Nav bar settings, set your "toggle torch" on one of the buttons' long press actions.
For screen off
Follow the above instructions, but add an additional action to the task to lock/turn off the screen. Name the task and app something different than the first, like "toggle torch lock."
I have this one set to my Volume Up in G2 Xposed settings. It turns on the screen for a second when toggling the torch on or off, but you don't have to unlock or anything and it works with the pin enabled.
I also hid the toggle apps in my app drawer with Nova just because.
Hope this helps somebody!

I have the same setup i think , but it doesn't work for me ?
Lg g2 , rooted + xposed + G2 xposed + nova launcher prime + secure settings + tasker
My created app works fine when launched Manually.
I think it might be a bug in G2 xposed,
since the only option that actually works Is putting it to stock function ...
Thanks for the walkthrough, I was just thinking the same .
In CM11 ROM the torch works fine , but it isn't stable enough for daily use

The culprit was gravitybox. Even without configuration , having it enabled was enough to block G2 xposed .
The good news : there is a torch function built into G2 xposed to use with the volume keys

Using an app called Torchie, just press both 'volume buttons' together to turn on/off torch anytime. It runs as a background service and just works anytime, screen on, lock screen and even when screen off (if enabled from Torchie Settings). It kinda make your phone feel like a conventional battery operated torch. No root required.

[APP] Power Button Flashlight (No Root)

Hello, i was recently experimenting with this Project: https://github.com/epeterson320/flashlight
In android studio. Its a flashlight app with no ui you just tap the icon and the flashlight activates, however i added an intent filter to the android manifest allowing the app to be launched with the "Jump to camera" gesture, this allows you to toggle the flashlight on and off with a double tap of the power button even when the screen is locked.
Instructions
Download and install
Lock phone and double tap power button
Enter your PIN or fingerprint
Select flashlight as default app
This will only work on phones that have the "Jump to camera" gesture. For example Nexus and Pixel phones, OnePlus phones and probably more. It will also replace the camera shortcut obviously. Clear defaults to select camera again.
so yeah hope someone finds this useful
Credit to @epeterson320 for creating the original app.
Download below in attached files
Thank you!!! This is amazing.
Christ this is like the one feature that's a deal breaker for me, Xposed torch is great but not seeing Xposed for android 9 yet; and this works well enough. Great thinking and thank you!
Problem
Hello. I have got a problem. Every time the phone is turned off for a longer period, when i double tap a power button camera turns on instead of flashlight. When I turn off the camera and double tam button again, flashlight works. Have anyone got this problem too? (xz1 compact, 47.2.A.8.24)
Edit: I have found out that when i remove password protection everything works
@James_Ward01 would you be willing to share your source code? I want to see if I can get the app to activate without waking the screen.

The app I have on here for download should work with the screen off as I added both android.media.action.STILL_IMAGE_CAMERA_SECURE
And android.media.action.STILL_IMAGE_CAMERA
Intent filters, the _SECURE one meaning it should work with the screen off. At least this was the case on my Nexus 6p at the time.

It does work with screen off. What I want to accomplish is to keep the screen off when I launch from the lockscreen. I don't want the screen to turn on when I double-press the power button. Maybe this is impossible?

Ah, I don't know then, I'm sure it is possible one way or another but I'm afraid getting that to work is beyond me,
Couldn't get it to work with home button on S10 but works perfectly mapped to Bixby button ????

Yes Samsung don't allow the power button to be remapped unfortunately. Glad you found a use for it though.
This works great on the pixel 5, thanks!!
Confirmed, I was using it as well on pixel 5 until now, thanks!
However, new problem :s I couldn't resist trying out Android 12 Beta 3.1 and then no power button access to flashlight anymore.
Same deal for me : Pixel 4a, was using this app daily when I was under Android 11, did the update to Android 12, not working anymore... Sad

You could use System Power:

Toggle Flashlight on/off : NO Root is needed

Sorry but I'm not sure to understand how your app may help : We're talking about enabling the flashlight using physical button shortcut.
Maybe I missed something but for me that's not what your app is doing, is it ?
Anyway, I'm using Torchie now and it kinda work : You enable it by pressing Vol+ AND Vol- at the same time, but it ONLY work when you're on the lockscreen and the screen is on.
So : "Power" to wake the screen, "Vol+ and Vol- together" to turn the light on or off
If anybody find something better, let us know. For now, this is a little cumbersome but it's working.
The Tap Tap app on GitHub works for flashlight by double tapping the back of the phone.
