Got a free laptop, need some insight on software. It's a Dell Inspiron 1526 running Vista (ugh). It needs to go on a diet. Here's a list of programs I use on my PC, that I want to use on the laptop.
Google Chrome
BitLord
7-Zip
Paint.net
AndroidSDK
Eclipse 3.7
Apk Manager
Notepad++
Adobe Reader
Windows Media Player (I know there's better, I use it because it's there...and only for music)
Nissan FAST 2001
(probably others as well)
Nissan FAST is a automotive program for part numbers and diagrams. My issue is it's 16bit. It runs on Windows 7 64 bit and XP 32 bit, but it won't run on Vista.
I need FAST to work and I don't like all Vista's bloat so a new OS is in order. 7 or XP was my original thought but I'm starting to use my PC more for messing with Android stuff, so maybe I can use my laptop for that instead of having to sit in front of my PC to get anything done.
It seems Ubuntu and Mint are the preferred Linux distros of Android devs.
So, what would you do?
Upgrade to 7?
Downgrade to XP?
Ubuntu/XP dual boot?
Ubuntu/7 dual boot?
Mint/XP dual boot?
Mint/7 dual boot?
There has to be a way around running dual boot just for FAST. Some Google time has shown that most of the others has Linux equivalents...Chromium, U7-Zip, The Gimp, Amarok, etc...

I'm in the same boat minus the OS issue and the free part. I am buying a sony vaio. For watching movies with the girlfriend and theming/coding for android.
Still haven't decided whether or not I'll go with blackbuntu as my secondary OS.
Edit: I can suggest a Win7/ubuntu install as that is basically what I am going to be doing. Blackbuntu is just a hacker based distro and I use that to pen-test my network from time to time. lol
FAST is the deal-breaker...and a lean mean OS....I'm on the laptop now....Vista is definitely the fat angry sister of the Windows family...it makes me miss ME lol
Have you considered a VM player?
Run your preferred OS as your primary OS. Get VMWare Player (Free) and install it with your required OS for that NISSAN FAST application.
ubuntu/win 7 is the best, because we need a windows platform, but linux too. you install only teh essential programs, because the work will be fast and clear

pretty much sums it up. windows 7 is gonna be the easiest os to just have work aand have all your programs and things in (plus it doesn't suck like vista), but it is also a good practice to keep Ubuntu installed for if you want to develop, fix windows, whatever you might need it for.
For the record I much prefer IntelliJ to eclipse, it feels a lot better and pretty much writes my code with all its shortcuts. works great on win7.

Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate gives you access to Windows Virtual PC and XP mode, so you effectively get an XP VM with it anyway, plus you can make your own. I use it for Gazillionaire Deluxe

From memory it's just Professional and Ultimate. Could be wrong though

i have a dell xcd35 (aka zte blade gen 2) with android 2.2, stock rom.
the phone is rooted, and now has clockwordmod rom manager installed on it.
i previously used to own a windows mobile, and had an emulator software running on my windows 7 laptop. this s/w could emulate the screen from the windows mobile in real time on my laptop (with a manageable amount of lag).
i have the android sdk installed (cannot live without the adb shell, since i am a bit of a linux junkie), but i have been trying hard to negotiate a similar real time emulation of my dell xcd 35 phone onto my laptop.
has anyone managed to do it?

i have tried the webkey app. this app is not for me. the app routes your data through a webservice over a public (most probably secure) link, and is terribly slow. its a great app if you want to share your phone with someone remotely, but not good enough for continuous use through USB. also, it eats into your 3G network usage.

i tried setting up a virtual device (avd). but not sure if this option can be used for emulating a phone screen, real time, on the laptop.
I am wondering if anyone knows of any way or if someone is working on a way to get ICS or JB to boot on a home-built PC? My PC is AMD 64, 8G RAM, etc. I have seen some instructions online, but they failed to mention that you must have a certain laptop or tablet. I would like to be able to tri-boot Android and run it whenever I feel like (probably use it the most). Thank you for any input.
Massive overkill. Why not simply run VMware and stick Android in a virtual machine?

There is a project called "android-x86" - this might help you.
I tried android-x86. That is where I found out after several failures that you can only use a handful of specific Lenovo devices to boot into Android. Apparently there is a way to use Android 1.6, but who wants that.
As far as the overkill thing. Well I did build it as a workhorse PC. And I could run VM. But I would rather boot into it. I think it would be great for average tasks.
How difficult would it be to make it work for myself from AOSP?
Kernel build, hardware support etc. That's why I just run a VM for mime when I want to play. Also means I can access all my synched days such as SMS messages easily on my PC.

I recently switched to Linux Mint Maya. Windows 7 had started to become an absolute headache with constant activation problems and then the kernel took a dump, prompting me to switch entirely to Mint. I've got almost everything set up, got some native Windows-equivalents as well, but even with the awesomeness that is Wine, I can't get some of my favorite Windows-based Android utilities working, such as Android Commander (which had a Linux version, could not get it running), or the Side Load Wonder Machine (also a Linux version, but no download link exists). I can mount my phone's storage and move the apps there, but I miss the information panel and mass-installer that Commander offered. It seems there are damn near no apps or utilities like this for Linux, and the Windows ones will not run in Wine. Am I alone in this?
I'm busy setting up an Android tablet solution in the high school that I work at and was wondering if anyone knows of an ICS emulator which will run on Windows 7 which doesn't use the SDK.
It will need to be easily installed by learners simply by running a .exe and will need to be able to run .apk files.
If it doesn't exist, is anyone up to the challenge?
