[Q] Videos play on device but not on PC? - Thunderbolt General

I have a IRREPLACEABLE video on my phone that plays fine. When I try to play it on my PC or when I transfer it however, all I get is audio.
I've done a reboot. All other videos work fine except this one and 3 others I shot recently. Same situation. On the phone = fine, PC...no bueno.
I have a codec pack installed, it is too large to attach via email, and astro tells me the 3GP was not found...but it's there...and it plays.......HELP!

Try a second pc?
Sounds like a codec issue to me.
this is not a signature I type it in every time it may be sent from my computer or my phone.

Didn't work on another computer either. I copied it to my harddrive, played it with 3 video players, and finally loaded it in video editing software. It saw the video.
I have the K-lite MEGA pack installed though. Weird.

ffdshow > k-lite plugin codecs

vlc player on windows usually plays whatever i throw at it

Handbrake is free and will convert the 3GP file to a format that is more pc-friendly. HTH

Yeah... I finally got it in my video editing software. As I stated above, I already have the k-lite pack installed. It was weird...wouldn't work on VLC, WMP, or Quicktime...just audio.... gave some weird error.
Even on the phone, these videos won't create a thumbnail in the gallery or astro, but all play just fine. STRANGE!

Save in a different video format?

I absolutely hate that the phone saves video's in ".mp4" and have some weird sort of "amr" audio codec involved? I can view these video's just fine on the phone, but if I pull them over to my computer, they play without sound. I have tried VLC, Quicktime, WMP, etc.
Now, I can rename the file extension to ".3gp" and it plays without any problems in Quicktime. But if I try to play it in VLC with the pre-defined extension, it says it doesn't have "SAMR" support, and only plays the video. I Googled it, found out all the reasons why (proprietary), and why it wouldn't ever be supported in VLC.
But is there any way to change the format the phone saves it in? It would be nice to able to send these video's from your phone to a friend and know that they could view it just fine.
I looked in Settings under the Camera....and nada.
Thanks!

From the video camera screen, go to Menu/Advanced/Capture Format and change it to H.263.
You are correct about changing the .mp4 extension to .3gp to allow it to play in Quicktime. But you should be able to play H.263 files on your computer without any changes.
I left mine in .mp4 and just downloaded the Klite codec pack, which lets you play .mp4 videos in classic win media on your laptop/PC. Works well on my laptop. Just make sure you choose custom install and deselect all the video options except for mp4 format. Otherwise it will conflict with other existing codecs such as divx.

Absolutely agree with Klite. All the time I install Windows,I don't use anything else than Klite codec pack in combination with very old(but really rocking) player ViPlay on all PCs/Ntbs in my surround. I can play almost everything without any problem.

Thank you, that worked. I had to actually make sure I was in video mode FIRST, then go to settings and the option to change the format was there.
Thank you!
And to others, I'm not complaining about not being able to watch the video on my own soo much...but I'd like to know that I could send the video out to friends and have a higher success rate in them being able to play the video.

Help getting a video off my TP

I have an alltel TP and i recorded a video using the stock camera app and i cannot get it to go on my computer running vista I have tried just dragging and dropping it but it won't play at all. It plays fine on my phone and other phones ive sent it to. I have also tried importing it with windows mobile device center. If i try to play it with quicktime it says invalid sampling error and shows it as an .mp4 Anyone have an idea to get it to play? Or am i importing it wrong?

Download VLC Player.
Look up Shark007 Windows Codecs...It will allow you to play 99.99999% of any video formats around
sorry to resurrect a somewhat dead thread, but did this end up working? I have a video i need to get off and I've run into the same problem...i tried installing shark 007 codecs (win7) but it gave me the same error. i havent restarted yet, but i'll post back if it works after that...

Movie player

Hi guys,
just got a HP touchpad. now is there a video player on here? and if its there what format do they have to be in to view it. have tried a couple of different ones and cant get them up.
Is there a player app i can download onto it at all ?
thanks
there is a photos & videos app built in, but it's pretty poor for video.
you need to add your video files to the root of the built in storage (the tablet installs onto your computer as a removable drive).
i still haven't got my head around the video file support just yet, but it doesn't seem to handle .avi, divx, xvid etc.
mp4 seems to be the main format.
there are a couple of apps for streaming videos from a upnp media server, but nothing free as far as i can tell.
kalemsoft media player seems to be the best of these as it lets you load video files from the local storage on your tablet as well as browse for remote stuff.
i have successfully played an avi file using this app.
i've only tried the demo version so far which requires internet access in order to assess the trial period.
i don't particularly want to purchase the paid version just yet.
I used Handbrake and followed the instructions here: http://forums.precentral.net/hp-tou...n-resources/287212-handbrake-preset-dvds.html I just tried a short 45 minute kids dvd to see if it would work okay. It was about a 400mb file. Placed it in a folder called Videos on the root of the usb partition and it shows up fine in the Photos and Videos app.

see i tried doing that as well. creating a folder called videos on the root and it wasn't detected.
only when i added the file direct to root could i access it.
are directory names case sensitive?
a video player that allows you to browse and/or add directories would be much better.
EDIT: looks like i had a folder called video. changed it to videos and it shows up.
strangely enough kalemsoft creates a folder recordings. when i added a video file to that, it also showed up.
I have put my videos in the download folder and they show up in the stock player fine. Also converted DIVX avi files to MP4 with Handbrake. Used the ipad HD settings for nice quality.
Kalemsoft Media Player wil read a lot of video formats , you can find it on app catalog.
The kalemsof that i downloaded isnt displaying in full screen and sometimes will hang on my TP. Guess its still not compatible to TP yet?

Thanx for the tip about Handbrake, nunja. I'll try it for conversions. I concur with the settings...
I'm on a Pre 2 and have no problems with mp4 playing (once you get the settings down it becomes rote). For my phone I use iPod settings...
For ripping from DVD I use DVDFab3 - I know there are way newer versions out there and I tried them but always go back to version 3. I just like the UI and it has never let me down. Point it at a DVD or ISO and under Mobile click Generic. You can configure it for generic mp4 and get a resolution up to 848x480 which should be alright on the TP screen. Your settings like Resolution, bitrate, volume level, subpicture - can all be saved as a profile.
DVDFab3 in a .rar file. Just extract and it will run out of the folder without install...

[Q] How to play media over network on stock unit?

Are there any tricks to this that don't require me to copy the file? I found a file explorer that lets me mount network drives from my NAS, but I cannot run the avi/mkv from there.
Anyone got some good pointers, or even better - a step by step for new owners ?
Cheers!

That's the one I use for mounting the drive. Tried clicking, double-clicking, tapping, tapping it like I would tap a boy trying to date my daughter etc etc. Nothing happened...
I can play movies through that and it loads them in dice player. That's files off my shared folder on laptop on same LAN.

I got sick of trying to get high def/720p content to play over my network without lag (or even play off SD). So I bought Splashtop Streamer (the tablet version) which is a remote connection app that has the unique ability to stream at almost a full 30fps without lag, including sound. So then I just start a show/movie on my desktop, connect in, and watch it. Almost lag free. Hiccup every now and again but its pretty smooth overall. Highly recommend it.

This. Navigate to the folder, press and hold on the selected file, open as, video, and select a player such as mobo or dice.

I've got VLC setup on my server, running in HTTP server mode, and I'm using VLC Direct (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vlcdirect.vlcdirect&hl=en). Works very well, and no copying is required. As an added bonus, you can use it in Remote Mode as well (not just streaming, which for all intents and purposes requires the pro version).
Thanks, guys! Got avis playing fine, and I even got mkv opened with another player. The mkv must have too high profile or something as it wasn't even stuttering (the image switched every ten seconds, so 6 images in the sound and video had a one minute lag ) even thouh the DTS sound worked fine
Will the VLC server downscale on-the-fly? Are there any options to do this? One of the major reasons for buying this was to watch movies in bed - or on the plane.
Are there any programs that will downscale movies to play well wit the Transformer?

Copy avi files to tf700t

Hello.
I tried to look this up but I cannot find an answer. This is my problem:
I do not have a dock. I connect USB to my PC. I try to copy an avi file to the tabled SD. I get a warning that the avi file will not play once copied.... and yes, it does not play.
I share a folder on my PC and I connect using the same program (Archos) on the tablet to the share. The same avi file plays no problem over wifi. I try to copy over wifi from PC to tablet, same problem.
I tried both the SD and the internal memory.
I took the SD out and used it with a data writer on the PC.
One time, a few months ago, but I do not remember what I did, I was successful. Those 3 movies are on the SD card and they play, so it should not be the SD card.
If anybody has any idea, I would much appreciate. Thank you.
I've played avi videos with BSplayer free without any issues. I also use AirDroid to transfer files from my computer to my tablet.
I'm it familiar with the software you are using but perhaps it's time to try something different

I am sure that the tf700 can handle avi files easily. Have you tried the following players (available for free on Google Play Store): Dice Player, MX Player, BS Player? All of these video players can handle almost anything.

Thanks for responding. Considering that I can play anything with the same player, on the tablet, from a share on the PC, I think the player has nothing to do with it. Also, the message that it will not play is given by Windows explorer, which should not know what player I am going to use.
What are you guys using to copy the files from PC to tablet? Windows Explorer or something else?
Thank you.

I seriously believe that there is something wrong with your Windows driver for the tablet. I just simply follow a very standard procedure:
1. Connect the tablet to a PC with Windows Vista or later (which fully support MTP) using the USB cable.
2. Navigate to the tablet's internal storage using Windows Explorer and paste the videos you want to play. The warning saying that your device may not be able to play the files is really irrelevant, you can ignore it and proceed to copy. The reason for that warning is because MTP assumes that your tablet cannot play avi files, and all Android devices using MTP will have this annoying alert.
3. Use the player suggested in previous posts to play. I must disagree with you regarding the role of players, especially when certain players have better support for Tegra 3 SoCs than others, hence the need for different video players. More importantly, avi is just a container, the important thing is the codec being used (h.264, MPEG-4, etc...). For example, a h.264 high profile video at 40 Mbps in an mp4 container is unplayable on my HTC Sensation even though mp4 is officially supported by my phone.
In all seriousness, it should be as simple as that. If it still doesn't work, you should try using a different Windows machine.
I get that message for literaly everything I copy to my TF700 and my SGS3 through Windows Explorer: .avi, .jpg, .bmp, .png, .mp4, .mp3, .srt, .doc, .txt, .wmv....
I use MXplayer (primary), BSplayer(secondary) and Diceplayer(tertiary) : They all play it fine. You get that error message in Windows because Android's stock player doesn't recognise the file when it's placed in the file manager. (duh, it's incomplete during transfer). Just hit 'yes to all'.
Try playing it with another app. Frankly other videoplayers are also far more advanced than the rather crappy stock app. Those three ^ play everything.
