[Q] How to play media over network on stock unit? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any tricks to this that don't require me to copy the file? I found a file explorer that lets me mount network drives from my NAS, but I cannot run the avi/mkv from there.
Anyone got some good pointers, or even better - a step by step for new owners ?
Cheers!

That's the one I use for mounting the drive. Tried clicking, double-clicking, tapping, tapping it like I would tap a boy trying to date my daughter etc etc. Nothing happened...

I can play movies through that and it loads them in dice player. That's files off my shared folder on laptop on same LAN.

I got sick of trying to get high def/720p content to play over my network without lag (or even play off SD). So I bought Splashtop Streamer (the tablet version) which is a remote connection app that has the unique ability to stream at almost a full 30fps without lag, including sound. So then I just start a show/movie on my desktop, connect in, and watch it. Almost lag free. Hiccup every now and again but its pretty smooth overall. Highly recommend it.

This. Navigate to the folder, press and hold on the selected file, open as, video, and select a player such as mobo or dice.

I've got VLC setup on my server, running in HTTP server mode, and I'm using VLC Direct (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vlcdirect.vlcdirect&hl=en). Works very well, and no copying is required. As an added bonus, you can use it in Remote Mode as well (not just streaming, which for all intents and purposes requires the pro version).

Thanks, guys! Got avis playing fine, and I even got mkv opened with another player. The mkv must have too high profile or something as it wasn't even stuttering (the image switched every ten seconds, so 6 images in the sound and video had a one minute lag ) even thouh the DTS sound worked fine
Will the VLC server downscale on-the-fly? Are there any options to do this? One of the major reasons for buying this was to watch movies in bed - or on the plane.
Are there any programs that will downscale movies to play well wit the Transformer?

[Q] [REQ] Media Player with access to LAN

Hi Folks,
is there any media player that can access to files that are in my LAN e.c. on my server?
If i use Astro FE, or ES File Explorer I have access to my server, but i cannot chose which media player to take...
so what I need is a player that has access to LAN or a file explorer with which i can choose how to open a file...
(Main problem: there is no media player that plays ALL file formats + lan access)
Thank you,
Michael
So far I don't believe there's any that can do that, mainly due to fact that its not that easy to develop something like this. I believe it can be done, but because the app would probably need to be either some sort of client-server architecture or streaming the video, otherwise, if you would say like double click on a media file in astro on the LAN side, it would be downloading the video to your phone, then playing it locally rather than directly playing it from the LAN server/machine. Do correct me if i'm wrong though.
have also been waiting (im)patiently for this. can't believe it hasn't been done already!
Right.
That was no problem on my winmo 6.5 device, a lot of apps were able to do that.
An alternative would be a "Lan App" that simulats a "Lan" folder at the sd-card on which media programs have access.
The downloading thing junst happens with videos, that astro or ES File Manager cannot play. I can play a single MP3 for exaple but the screen than is black. So it seems as if thereĀ“s no comfortable app.
sad.
So can you recommend me some media app that maks the android device to a good looking media player for local files? (also that "easy" exercise is not as easy...)
thanks so far!
I use subsonic. It uses its own server software, which is a bit of a bummer, but it works great anywhere be it over wifi or 3g.
http://www.subsonic.org/pages/index.jsp
PS. There are clients for many platforms, including adobe air and a built in http server as well.
The subsonic client is available on the market I believe.
Vlc steamer can do both audio and video streaming great little app, but only works if the server can run vlan server

Where you able to find any app with la access?
There's an app in Google Play called 'Samba filesharing'. Browse for a media file on your pc, (through LAN of course) and open it. Works like a charm....

I am able to stream videos from a lan computer through ES File Explorer in HTC Desire Hd using the default streaming video player app. Takes a few seconds to buffer and works a charm. Not sure if this is just a HTC feature.
Thanks for the answers I also found one called bsplayer its great!!!!

[Q] Sharing PC files

Hi !
I want to share my files (videos, comics etc) in my computer without copy each file on my tablet.
I use EStrong file manager but if i explore my lan to watch a movie, when i click on a video file the file manager start to copy the file to SDcard.
I want avoid this, i want watch the movie directly from my pc. There is a way to solve this bad situation
I tried to use cifs manager to mount directory on my lan but i'm not able to do this. Somebody, help me !
I installed File Expert (free) with the File Expert SMB Mount Plugin (also free), and my Samba shares work flawlessly - I can stream movies with no issues.
Anothe good solution for streaming movies, music, etc. is via DLNA/UPnP (if your rig supports it). I find UPnPlay (free) absolutely fantastic for that.
Hi, thanks for your answer !!
I tried UPnPlay and it works well but i cannot see mkv files with it and also with dlna or upnp i'm not able to visualize subtitles (.srt and similar).
Can you confirm or i'm doing some mistake ?
Tnx for your help and time, man
P.S.
I want to explain better....I have shared my movies with windows media center catalog, it's correct ? Do you use another application to share your files (avi, mkv, subtiltles etc ) ?
I have installed the smb plugin for file expert but i can't mount anything because i don't have root privileges...
It's possible to root the eee pad now ? And it's safe ?
Please help me with the previous question also. Tnx !
Another option for viewing movies or listening to songs on the eee pad is to just use the Splashtop software in MyCloud>MyDesktop. Works pretty well for streaming stuff.

I've just run some tests, and while I see MKV's with no issues, unfortunately I can confirm I can't seem to visualize SRTs at all
And that's odd, because I use either MoboPlayer or Rock Player to watch movies (I prefer the latter), and both *should* support SRT... dunno, maybe I'm missing something here...
Apart from that, UPnPlay works perfectly for me - I just wish it had a more user-friendly interface, like Asus MyNet, which is almost useless (as it only uses the stock movie player, which doesn't support AVI/MKV/etc.) but has a much friendlier interface (all the servers constantly shown on the left, etc.)

I share them via Windows Media Center on my Win7 rig, plus I have a NAS and a standalone Media Player which each have their own DLNA servers (besides being shared via SMB).

That's very very odd, as I can fully access my network shares, but I have no root privileges! I'm not the tinkering kind of guy... too scared to brick my tablet to try rooting it...
Anyway, I just add them into the File Expert "network" tab, provide access credentials, and voila, accessible.

Mmm... it works, true, but I can't seem to have it run anything better than 1024x768 resolution.
My PC is set for 1920x1080, and as soon as I connect via MyDesktop, it goes to 1024x768, which is kinda awful.
I much prefer PocketCloud (a VNC client) or LogMeIn Ignition (a LogMeIn client) to connect to my PC. I have to scroll and/or pinch-zoom, but at least I can use all the real estate on the screen...

You can change the resolution to 1280x800 in the splashtop options. Sounds like you still have it set to the ipad resolution. My pc desktop is also 1920x1080x2(2 monitors) but it changes the resolution of the primary monitor pretty fast so it doesnt bother me. It doesnt look fantastic but the whole point of the exercise is to view stuff on the eee pad, on which it works great.
One option you might want to explore is to use a combination of the Air Video Server and Mirage Beta from the Android Market.
Air Video is an app on the iphone/ipad that I used for a long time (before switching to Android) and basically does on the fly transcoding on your PC to stream to your device. This means it can show all file formats without the need for conversion. i've tried the Air Video server/Mirage app out on my phone (HTC Desire) and it works very well. I've just noticed that the Mirage app has now been updated to support tegra processors/Honeycomb. I would try it out myself but I'm at work at the moment and can't install anything on my computer . Anyhow, just another option to consider...
I cannot mount SMB share from UPnPlay and I do not have root....
I am trying to stream divx from my NAS server that is DLNA compliant.

How are you streaming from Samba shares with File Expert? When I try to open an .avi file from the network, I can only open it with the Browser or Dolphin HD. (If I copy that same file to my Transformer, File Expert will offer Moboplayer as an application to open it with, though.)

I open File Expert, go to Network, click on the machine I'm interested in, click on the shared folder with the movies I wanna watch.
When I click on the .avi file, the Browser opens for a half-second, and then the system gives me the choice of which app to use to open the movie (in my case, Mobo Player or Rock Player).
This is one of the biggest uses I have for my tablet. I would like something like audiogalaxy but had the vlc stream and convert working on my Evo, but won't buffer on the transformer. Werid I know. Also tried using mobo player but it didn't play the mp4 as it fast forward through it. Didn't try any of my mkv files.

Im using rock player, it played EVERY video file i have asked it to run.
try diceplayer
Rock/Mobo/Vital/vPlayer can not use hw decoder when playing file that isn't supported by system like MKV(+DTS/FLAC).
Diceplayer can play MKV/M2TS files using HW Decoder.so
diceplayer use almost same power as stock player. sw codec base player need more power.
Xperia Play have QSD8255. it can play 720p High level 3.1~4.1
I had issues with RockPlayer on my XP, can't remember if I tried MoboPlayer.
I'm using arcMedia Player and that has played everything I have thrown at it.
Android's media playing capabilities definitely seems to be weaker than that of iPhone and Windows IMHO.

Thanks for mentioning of diceplayer - i tried it and seems good for everything but cannot play WMV files - it has an option to play them stock but regardless of what I set it too does not play them.
you dont need a DNLA server such as ps3media center or tversity to stream your media.
Install the cifs/tuns modules (or flash my system.img with it all built in) and use cifs manager to map your pc's network drives to your sdcard.
You can now stream video, pictures and audio over your wifi network without any extra software running on your PC.
and if you wanna get tricky you can run a vpn to your pc and connect to it and stream music while away from your house ;D

Thanks for the recommendation on arcMedia. It worked flawlessly with .avi, .div, .divx, .srt subtitles in spanish failed with accented letters and non-english characters but japanese subtitles worked perfect, and they look really sharp.
Even though MoboPlayer was recommended by a lot of people and someone reviewed it (I searched for that thread but I couldn't find it again), .divx wasn't recognized as a video file, .div closed after a split second and .avi's audio was out of synch like hell. I didn't even check if subtitles were supported.
Mobo has worked the best transfered plenty of BR Rips from PB and they look amazing on the xplay. People at work are like wtf.

don't know about vpn but get "File Expert" from the market and you can map network drives (including NAS drives, i.e. PC can be off) and stream video via wifi (dice player or other players supporting your formats will be needed, otherwise your are limited to MP4 format) - I mapped my NAS device using internal IP address - don't know how secure it would be if you enable external web access to it through external IP and not sure if it would work as an FTP or something for downloading only not streaming possibly.
I use upnplay for streaming over a network in conjunction with moboplayer works great (probably the 2 best free apps iv ever come across).
Im interested in setting up a vpn to access my content whilst out and about or through someone elses wifi. Might have to invest in a sling box

I use Wyse PocketCloud from the Market to access two machines at work - one via remote desktop to take control of it, one with UltraVNC to share with other people on it. But if it's file sharing not just using your PCs' desktops - one of the guys here uses remote desktop to put files he needs into the Dropbox remotely, then picks them up in the Dropbox on his mobile. I don't use Dropbox yet - want to try setting up external access to the network files first to see how they work in File Expert if at all. Maybe TUN/CIFS modules are better for that but I haven't tried them out either.
Mobo Player the best!
and for audio FYI, i'd go for PowerAMP!
I'm using rock player, no issue for me so far.

[Q] How to get DicePlayer to play MKVs off my NAS?

Purchased DicePlayer 1.5.2 last night, works a treat with local storage (MicroSD, SD)! Worth way more than $4.95 to me! My 720p MKVs play like they are supposed to. Perfect for when not at home. But when at home I would rather play them directly off my NAS like I do with my TV (DLNA) and Dune HD media player (DLNA or SMB/CIFS).
But I can't figure out how and it may need some more "middleware". I can browser to content on the NAS using ES File Explorer and Total Commander BETA with LAN plugin. But then it either gives an error or won't find/load the video. When using the same two apps to navigate to local storage it works, to the NAS via SMB/CIFS it does not How to hack this together??? Some how DicePlayer needs to notice the SMB remote mount like local storage for SMB? Or Dice needs to talk DLNA since my NAS is offering up content via SMB and DLNA?
Before finding/buying DicePlayer I had purchased the Plex app for Android as I can also run a Plex server on my NAS. That however is doing real time transcoding and the CPU limitation on the NAS means I have to transcode to the lowest video setting on the Transformer. Which still works, but doe snot look as good as native 720p does locally.
I hope this makes sense!
Get upnplay from the market and use that to connect to your nas since its broadcasting upnp. Just make sure your network can handle it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Root, install a custom rom that has cifs.ko then download cifsmanager so you can mount your nas. Of course your NAS has to support cifs.
I am running Freenas on an old p4 and can stream a good number of my mkvs this way.
Found UPnPlay, surprised I missed it, thanks! I will try that tonight. Sounds promising from the reviews. The other methods I have come up end up copying the files over to local storage which is no good.
That's strange - it works flawlessly for me browsing and opening movies on my NAS using ES File Explorer.
The only strange thing is that when I click an AVI it asks which app it should open the file with, while when I click on a MKV it doesn't seem to know it's a video file and says it can't open it.
So I have to long-tap the MKV, and select "open as video" - voila`, MKV playback!

Exactly, no issue with ES file manager probably the best dlna client out there, much faster than Unplay. The latter shows a delay in picking up files. With Dice Player had no issues picking up the stream from ES. Same issue of having to long press on MKV for it to play, weird . . .
OP, I would recommend looking at your firewall and router settings becuase something is blocking your connection.
Good stuffs here!
Let me make report for night. To recap. TF101 with HC 3.2 (stock) and DicePlayer 1.5.2 paid. NAS is ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus. SMB/CIFS and DLNA both enabled on the NAS and I stream to my TV directly (Samsung, DLNA) and media player (Dune Smart D1, SMB) just fine. To date, when I use ES File Explorer to browse a MKV on the NAS and select it says "Sorry, no application available"; even though by the icon it KNOWS it is a video.
So. I first tried UPnPlay. It worked! It asked me to chose a player program after pressing, I choose DicePlayer. It starts right away but only audio, no video. I have to skip back and forth some then things pick up OK. Happy!
So then I looked on the Android Market for other DLNA apps. I saw a Skifta Beta. I know the name Skifta from my ReadyNAS as I have seen a plugin for Skifta, never used it as I couldn't figure out what it would do for me past the builtin ReadyDLNA server the NAS has for DLNA. So I grabbed it. Interface of the app is more polished. But same problem with DicePlayer and the no video until I jigger the slider. Still happy though. 99% there.
Then I visit here and see about the long press from within ES File Explorer. Never thought to try that. Did it. Prompted me to pick a file type (video) which then prompted for a player (DicePlayer) and it worked! I can't recall if it had the same no video problem as before. Because that is when I decided to reboot the TF101. But now when I do the long press and open as video it dims the screen It never asks for a player and it stays dim until I hit anything else.
Watz the heck? Strange! So I have some progress. But would like to not use UPnPlay or Skifta if they are not needed and get ES to behave again!
I will maybe reinstall ES and reboot and muddle about.
But it's not a network/firewall issue at this point, that I does know
Thanks 2 all.
As make followup.
I would also like to add my unit started doing another weird "dim screen" thing the other day. When I get the task bar alerts for incoming GMail and click it to open (versus "x" for close alert) it does the same dim screen thing! Like somehow the requested app can or will not load.
Strangeness.
Thank goodness sake for Google search! I found this threads below from a search re screen dim:
http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-general-discussion/7752-dim-screen-issue-3-2-a.html
My unit was docked and reorient did nothing but then I undocked and whacked it around and the dialog to pick came back for ES! Which now seems to work all OK! But I still get the audio+black screeen video in DicePlayer until I rejigger all around. Which is a bit annoying as it is now soooooo close. Mayhaps I reboot and start things from scratch again.
But good to know this dim screen issue is OS related so should be fixable as one mate said by 3.2.1
Oh, forgot to add like I have seen elsewhere re similiar issues for screen and DicePlayer here I have unchecked the thumbnail for video option early on in process tonight for black screen.
I saw the DicePlayer guy has a new support email and the price has gone up! Let's hope the support stays the same

Movie player

Hi guys,
just got a HP touchpad. now is there a video player on here? and if its there what format do they have to be in to view it. have tried a couple of different ones and cant get them up.
Is there a player app i can download onto it at all ?
thanks
there is a photos & videos app built in, but it's pretty poor for video.
you need to add your video files to the root of the built in storage (the tablet installs onto your computer as a removable drive).
i still haven't got my head around the video file support just yet, but it doesn't seem to handle .avi, divx, xvid etc.
mp4 seems to be the main format.
there are a couple of apps for streaming videos from a upnp media server, but nothing free as far as i can tell.
kalemsoft media player seems to be the best of these as it lets you load video files from the local storage on your tablet as well as browse for remote stuff.
i have successfully played an avi file using this app.
i've only tried the demo version so far which requires internet access in order to assess the trial period.
i don't particularly want to purchase the paid version just yet.
I used Handbrake and followed the instructions here: http://forums.precentral.net/hp-tou...n-resources/287212-handbrake-preset-dvds.html I just tried a short 45 minute kids dvd to see if it would work okay. It was about a 400mb file. Placed it in a folder called Videos on the root of the usb partition and it shows up fine in the Photos and Videos app.

see i tried doing that as well. creating a folder called videos on the root and it wasn't detected.
only when i added the file direct to root could i access it.
are directory names case sensitive?
a video player that allows you to browse and/or add directories would be much better.
EDIT: looks like i had a folder called video. changed it to videos and it shows up.
strangely enough kalemsoft creates a folder recordings. when i added a video file to that, it also showed up.
I have put my videos in the download folder and they show up in the stock player fine. Also converted DIVX avi files to MP4 with Handbrake. Used the ipad HD settings for nice quality.
Kalemsoft Media Player wil read a lot of video formats , you can find it on app catalog.
The kalemsof that i downloaded isnt displaying in full screen and sometimes will hang on my TP. Guess its still not compatible to TP yet?

Thanx for the tip about Handbrake, nunja. I'll try it for conversions. I concur with the settings...
I'm on a Pre 2 and have no problems with mp4 playing (once you get the settings down it becomes rote). For my phone I use iPod settings...
For ripping from DVD I use DVDFab3 - I know there are way newer versions out there and I tried them but always go back to version 3. I just like the UI and it has never let me down. Point it at a DVD or ISO and under Mobile click Generic. You can configure it for generic mp4 and get a resolution up to 848x480 which should be alright on the TP screen. Your settings like Resolution, bitrate, volume level, subpicture - can all be saved as a profile.
DVDFab3 in a .rar file. Just extract and it will run out of the folder without install...
