Gingerbread UI Hiding beneath Honeycomb - G Tablet General

After reading about this trick that Graffix0214 found on Honeycomb on his Dell Streak, I can confirm that the Gingerbread UI is hidden within Honeycomb as ported to the Gtablet in the Alpha by Roebeet.
On a Gtablet running the Honeycomb Alpha, download LCDDensity for Root from the market, set the LCD Pixel Density to 180 and reboot - you will then see the Gingerbread logon UI - changing back to 160 will return you to the Honeycomb UI - interesting at the very least

indeed
It is really cool indeed. I always thought everything seems smaller on the honeycomb screen,, so i set mine to 140 and its just perfect now.

@jrfree
I was just reading about this online ... how is the usability of the Ginger interface? Did you try any apps?

Honeycomb SDK preview out!

Google just posted on the android dev blog, a sdk preview for honeycomb is out!
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/01/android-30-platform-preview-and-updated.html
I'm downloading now to give it a go!
Just fired up the emulator. Its dog slow and its stuck in portrait mode on its side! Does anyone know how to get it into landscape mode?

I tried figuring it out but couldn't, must be a feature.
Yeah, same here. Emulator is REALLY slow. I mean I expected it to be maybe a little slower than previous versions, but holy crap. My computer is by no means the best out there, but it certainly isn't slow. You can barely even tell what's going on when you do something.

Or Ctrl+F11 / Ctrl+F12
Yea I had to google search how to change orientation, with numlock OFF, numpad 7 or 9.
And yea the emulator is super super slow.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of widgets in there, or new apps etc.
I know honeycomb is meant to be 'built from the ground up' for tablets, but to me it just seems like a tablet themed front end (launcher and app drawer). I manged to crash the launcher and then I saw the standard android notification bar etc.
As a side note, if honeycomb is going to be released in a few weeks with the Xoom, maybe google is skipping gingerbread on the nexus 1 and going straight to honeycomb?

Its not going to work like that. Tablets are going 3.x route
and phones are going to stay 2.x
So the next phone release will be 2.4
I tried the usual emu shortcuts (Numpad 7 and 9, Ctrl F11 and F12) but they just switch the window orientation, not the Android UI. If the window goes into portrait mode its slightly too tall for my monitor (1920x1200 res). If the window is in landscape mode the UI remains in portrait so its sideways on (if you see what I mean).

And you got your Information from...?
Some Android guy confirmed, that Honeycomb isn't Tablet exclusive.
And it also says that 3.0 is specifically optimized for Tablets but NOT that it's Tablet-exclusive! http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-3.0-highlights.html

According to the interview with Matias Duarte and Engadget, Honeycomb will be optimized for both phone and tablet sized hardware.
In the Engadget interview with the android UI guy, I can't remember exactly what he said, but he hinted that honeycomb is not exclusively for tablets, just what we have seen of it so far is.
I think the phone version of honeycomb will just be like the gingerbread UI with the new apis and features of honeycomb
It is stuck in portrait mode for me too. Ctrl-f11 switches the window layout but the android inside is still portrait...
Apparently you need to go into settings and turn off automatic orientation
Anyone having luck with getting it to run?
So how long before we see the camera app extracted and running on our phones?
Emulator is horrendesly slow. I know it's a preview sdk but urg...
The launcher keeps crashing for me, it worked one but wanted to change resolution so closed it
I think the launcher only works at the default resolution.
I changed the scale when you launch the avd to fit it on my screen
What is new for honeycomb? Sorry if I sound like a noob

[Q] Decent honeycomb launcher replacement

Anyone found a decent honeycomb launcher (home screen) replacement? The default one seems to stutter a lot when swiping left and right. Launcher pro and ADW don't have these problems it seems, but they are designed for phones and so don't look good on a tablet. Especially missing the apps button at the top right.
Any suggestions?
Coming from the GTablet, I have used the VTL Launcher on my Transformer as well and it seems pretty well suited for tablet use. I have since switched back to the default launcher on the Transformer, but I still use it on my GTablet running CyanogenMod.
You can get VTL here: http://vegantab.gojimi.com/vt-labs/vtl-launcher/
Using adw for awhile and its much better then the stock. Dont know where u got that adw is only made for only phone. It looks great on my tf
I'm using ADW EX and you can hide the bar and do just about anything else that would make it less "phone like"
See the attached for my current setup.

Have tried ADW, LauncherPro and VTL.
VTL still feels a bit Beta
LauncherPro (which i use on my phone) just didnt seem quite right on my tablet
ADW is now my launcher of choice ... very smooth and very customisable.
Well..... until the SPB Tablet UI is release ... look at the youtube clips
If you use ADW EX there is a thread somewhere that tells how to tweak the settings for best performance....I can't find it.
But...basically this is what i did.
Hide dock bar.
Up the columns and rows to 10 x 9.
change the icon size to 75%
choose "background color" for the icons.
Choose "curve" for the transition effect.
Set "bounce" to 15
Set "transition speed" to 450.
it works great.
I've tried LauncherPro, which I use on my phone and have to agree with wilbur.
I've also choosen ADW EX, but would much prefer SPB Tablet UI too
I'll probably give the SPB Tablet UI a try but I hope it's not as much of a battery hog as the one for the phone.
My review of the launcher for the phone....
It was amazing...just like the tablet UI vid...but it was no faster than having icons (even less so) and it ran down my battery MUCH quicker than I was willing to allow. My battery consumption went from 8 hours to 4 hours before charging...unacceptable to me.
I refunded it for those reasons.
To be sure, it was eye candy...the best I've seen, but the battery consumption was not what I wanted.
PS: too bad that the SPB Tablet UI isn't for us; only for OEMS.
Here's a quote from one of the articles:
As before – and to the frustration of many interested users – SPB doesn’t plan to offer end-users either UI, only OEMs. They’ll be able to customize the layout and the widgets, adding in their own content and carrier-specific tweaks to differentiate the interface as they see fit.
What about this then? (one of the first links, posted yesterday)
Don't know if this is the correct version, can't test it since my tf is currently @ RMA.
(BTW, your tf needs to be rooted)

Yes...that's the version that I tried (possibly an earlier one) but nonetheless... that's the app that I tried. (maybe it wasn't available to the general public at first)
I did pay the 15.00 for it...if it was somewhat gentle on the battery, then I'd say it's worth it if they sell it.
Maybe the Tablet UI will be available to the general public then...
ADW EX and get rid of the dock and expand the desktop.
If you want an app draw button, design your own to match your device.
How did you guys get the settings to work on ADW EX? Or did the 3.2 update break it?
U can try the normal spb 3d shell, it does have a beta tab option.
I liked ur, but for some reason it drained my battery.

[Q] Does Wallpaper scrolling work?

Alright so I've rooted and got everything updated on 6.2.1 and I've purchased the Christmas HD 3D livewallpaper by dualbootgames and I've noticed the scrolling doesn't appear to work on not just this wallpaper but any wallpaper. Is there a way to make it work?
I was on Go Launcher and I thought maybe it was just that but I downloaded ADW and it still doesn't allow scrolling even with all the settings set to allow scrolling.
As far as I can find out, there's no way to get scrolling wallpaper on the Kindle Fire version of the OS. I'd never actually seen scrolling wallpaper in action till I loaded CM7 on my Fire. Spent a lot of time poking through various files trying to figure out a way to enable it in the stock OS, but no luck.
Ok that's all I wanted to know, thanks. It'd be nice to get it working without having to go to CM7 imo but it is what it is.
I'll add that I'm no expert, so perhaps someone with more skill than I can find a way to enable wallpaper scrolling. I'd certainly like to have it without having to go to CM7. (at least until CM7 has full ability to run the apps that run on the stock OS.)

Honey Comb Launcher

I recently installed this app and I have got to say, it is pretty awesome. It runs very smoothly and looks great. a few warnings though, as it is a little buggy, DO NOT try to open the settings panel from there (its designed to look like honeycomb settings, but that kills it and you'll have to wipe the user data off to use it again) and beautiful widgets doesn't work (does the same as settings when it tries to load. you can get it from the market or there syndicateapps.com/main/Honeycomb_Releases.html
also look at their ICS launcher, but download the older release from their site as the new one doesnt work on kindle.

[UPDATED] GO Launcher HD v1.0 BETA 2

Hey guys just letting everyone know that the GO Dev Team has just released the beta for GO Launcher HD v1.0 -- a TABLET SPECIFIC version of their famous GO Launcher EX.
Check it out:
http://golauncher.goforandroid.com/2012/03/go-launcher-hd-v1-0-beta/
Fantastic. Exactly what I wanted the tablet version to be.
Issues:
6th folder created does not stay. The folder deletes and the icons are dumped to the all apps page.
Spelling mistake for the word "systme" When adding a widget. Should be "system".
Screen transition from portrait to landscape takes noticeably long time.
To much space between top of screen where google search is and first row of widgets only in portrait mode. Landscape is good.
Need ability to add more rows than 5. Even the custom option doesn't allow it.
I love it on my Epic and I am really liking this so far. Have not tried Apex but I have tried Nova on my phone and still found myself going back to Go.

Good stuff. Will be awesome in the future.
Launcher
I have no issue with the default launcher....
Awesome, I tried it yesterday and found no bugs...using 10 folders without any problem

Installed many different launchers to find that the default still the winner. About this one in my opinion need lots of work. (lag, wallpaper resizing issue, widget will not added unless you restart the launcher). Am not new to go launcher its installed and working perfectly on my Samsung galaxy Tab since a while with no issue....
Again its just my opinion with Go launcher HD.

The new Go Launcher HD just killed it. Wow. The setup is great. Customizations are great. Finally.

Hence...... the `beta` tag. Still pushes beyond the other ICS specific launchers, IMO.

I'll have to try this out, but I've never liked Go Launcher over ADW or Launcher Pro for my phone, its always been slower and takes up more resources compared to those 2, but we'll see how it runs on the tablet
Edit - runs really nice on the tablet, thinking its going to be a keeper
It's very polished and good features so far. Once/if it has internal icon theming controls similar to ADW I will probably use it exclusively.
I noticed that sometimes when moving or resizing widgets the launcher gets stuck in edit mode.
Aside from that and a few other bugs, this will be my new default launcher once it is out of beta stage. The amount of features and the ease of adding icons, widgets, and folders is really great. I'm glad the decided to make a tablet version of their launcher.
brilliant launcher, haven't had a problem with it at all, landscape to portrait does take a while, haven't tried folders yet... the dock bar is something I've been looking forward to, looks good too.
For a first Beta this is running very smoothly. I assume in the near future they will add many more features and themes similar to Go Launcher EX. The Go Dev Team always have put out timely updates. One of my favorite features that I have only seen in Go Launcher is app drawer folders.

A damn good start. I love the old Go Launcher but this new one is kind of nice. They need to fine tune the wallpaper application, also the window transitions are adequate but nowhere near what Nova launcher has done. I will say this, this is one of the nicest Betas I have used.
Just wanted to post that people should check back with the OP link. Version 1 Beta 2 is available.

What's your point?
People use custom launchers for the added features and customizability.

Thanks for this heads up. I happen to love Go Launcher on my phone so I'll give it a whirl. However all the auxiliary launchers are losing to stock ICS which is smooth as silk on my tablet. We shall see; it's playtime!

They may be but go launcher is perfect with the folders like iPhone. Its also very quick to load.
Skang-a-Lang ROM: The Fascinate Continuum
Yeah nothing beats ICS-Stock-Launcher in Terms of Speed and smoothness. I currently just use the normal Go Launcher Ex with a minimalistic Theme and I like it ( I use very fancy screen transitions so you cant really notice the lag )
Does this Beta already support themes? Guess I will just give it a try, my TF101 is charging atm >_>
