[Q] Netflix App on TF - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if anyone saw this, but a hacked version of the Netflix app has been released that is supposed to bypass device checking.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
Has anyone had any luck getting it to work on the TF? I read some Xoom users having issues, beginning to think it wasn't set up for HC (The hack that is).

Doesn't work

I heard that it won't work on Tegra 2 devices yet.

Seconded. No go for any of them.

Yes it installs, no it will not work. There's a huge thread here in this forum somewhere where people try all sorts of things to no avail.

Not true. I have it working on a Viewsonic Gtablet running cyanogenmod 7.0.3. Viewsonic has Tegra 2. However, it should be noted that the cyanogenmod does not use the hardware acceleration available for Tegra 2.

It works on gtablet with CM7.0.3 with modified build.prop no problem.
This was kind of a reason to hold on my gtablet a bit longer.

I also have it working on my Atrix which also has a Tegra 2. From what I've read, honeycomb is the problem, not Tegra.

The Netflix app seems to be very picky. On my phone it will work with CyanogenMod G2 6.1.1 but not CyanogenMod G2 7.0.3. So hardware might not be the issue.
If I remember the error log correctly we were getting the same error message on the G2 CM 7 stable builds as we are now getting with the EEE Pad (about the DRM libs). Cyanogen got Netflix mostly working in his v7 nightly builds so maybe we will luck out and his fix will apply to the Prime firmware too

Has anyone tried any Netflix builds on the leaked 3.1?

Netflix?

anybody got netflix working for the infuse? i tried the stock 1.2.0 and modded 1.2.0 before seeing that 1.2.1 is out and doesnt have device check anymore so it doesnt need to be modded but its still closing the program after i log in.

Yeah, I tried as well this morning with the same results. BTW just wanted to note my infuse is rooted.
Rooted infuse with no device check apk same result
tried. Installs fine, but closes after trying to sign in
I am able to sign in and utilize all of the apps features including navigating my instant queue, but it shuts me down when i try to play.

it only works with gingerbread on the hummingbird. on a snapdragon it works on 2.2 because quallcomm has a deal with netflix. i guess the drm support is different.

Thanks for the the 1.2.1 download. I was able to get the 1.2.0-No device check.apk version to install and launch. Everything but streaming is working (i.e. add to queue, search, etc.). One thing I haven't tried yet is to 'deactivate' one of my devices that I use to stream Netflix. Remember, you only get 6 unique devices at a time. I had to do this when I got my AppleTV2 and realized that between the xbox360's, blu-ray player and the multiple iphone/Pads in our house, that I had run out of activations (got a message that the ATV2 couldn't access Netflix Instant, blah, blah, blah... a similar one to what I'm getting when I try with the Infuse), so I deactivated the blu-ray and was able to use my ATV2 just fine.
Will post if this works.
deactivating devices doesnt make a difference. and i dont appear to be limited to 6 devices anymore, i now have 9.
What it's going to boil down to is to modify a gingerbread rom and most importantly a kernel to get it onto an infuse. That's the only way we're gonna pull this off.....
Or just wait. =]

edit: just found a tegra 2 version. going to try it out.
Nope, not working. Someone said it works on the Acer Iconia A500.
Dude, you have to report if you got it working ! that looks like awesomeness =)
Maybe someone could try editing their build.prop to make it work? I purchased it on the market and it works on my Captivate. I saw a thread on the gameloft forums where it is working on Gtablets. I installed it on my Transformer but get the error message that it isn't compatible even though I downloaded the tegra 2 resource files and put them where they need to go. If a simple build.prop change could fix this that would be fantastic. I'm not rooted and left the cable at work so I can't root to try it. However if anyone rooted gets it working I will definitely be rooting. I was hoping that after purchasing it on my phone it would show up on my Transformer under uninstalled purchased apps but no go

no go. Tried the build prop from lg optimus and acer iconia tab. stil says device not compatible. I dont get why gameloft wouldnt make an effort to have this tablet ready on launch.I guess its honeycomb. Im so disappointed. I doubt they wil ever add tablet support. They are pretty lame with updates
oh how I want a fix for this. Until then I'll use my thunderbolt but this would be so much better on a 10.1 inch screen
There is an "AllDevices" version now available which install, updates and runs to a point.
I managed to create a new character and accept the first quest before getting a FC.
Haven't tried further so far but going to give it another go.
The screen doesn't seem to quite fit, a small portion appears to be lost at the top.
Managed to complete a few more quests before the next FC.
FPS looks sparodic and like I said the screen isn't quite right, some text missing from top of pop up windows etc, buttons take a couple of presses to register sometimes but all in all looks a good game and quite playable without the FCs.
nice, did a search for "all devices version" loaded my char up and I've had no isuues so far

netflix on android

well i wonder if the reason it works on the moto tab and the galaxy tab is because they paid netflix? what other reason would they have if i simple file edit fixes it...
This should be in General Discussion. To answer your question: In the case of the Transformer, Netflix themselves nor their app is responsible for it not running on the Transformer. Your theory keeps getting kicked around the forums...the idea that money is changing hands. There is no extortion here. ASUS did/does not need to pay Netflix anything. They just need to compile and include a newer version of libnvomx for the Transformer.
That's interesting, but that's not what ASUS claims. After asking them why there still isn't Netflix support after the 3.2 update, I got this response:
The current version of Netflix available on the Android Market is only supported for Android 2.2 based phones, and not any Honeycomb tablets. While installing the Netflix 1.3 APK has enabled Netflix for other Honeycomb tablets, officially, they are still not supported. At this time, users will have to wait on an updated release from Netflix.

Movies is in my Android Market though.
Maybe Netflix hasn't updated the market yet.
Just root your tablet and take it into your own hands.
netflix and market has nothing to do with it.
sry im on 3.2 and dont feel like downgrading...
You can root 3.2
I did it earlier today and it took like 10 mins. Couldn't have been easier.

So what if it's not out? It's a supported device.
Guys,
The ASUS support rep is wrong. Netflix 1.3 DOES work on Honeycomb tablets, the XOOM being one of them. There is no conspiracy here, no matter how hard you look. When attempting to stream from Netflix on the Transformer using Honeycomb 3.2, you get that error message. A peek in logcat shows the Netflix app yells about not finding function DRM.play inside OMX. This is a function of a NEWER version of libnvomx than ships on the Transformer or in it's updates.
XOOM has newer libnvomx w/ drm.play function = working netflix
Transformer (and other tablets) with libnvomx WITHOUT drm.play = broke netflix
Since the hardware inside the XOOM and the Transformer are VERY similar, I was able to pull the newer libnvomx.so from the XOOM and overwrite the one on my Transformer to make Netflix function. That's ALL the Netflix app cares about. It doesn't care what device you are on, or if Netflix has been "paid" by that manufacturer. That said, because the Transformer IS a different device than the XOOM, things break when doing this. I do believe the only problem on the Transformer that I've seen reported is that the libnvomx replacement breaks WMV playback. Not a big issue for most, tbh. The same fix works on the Acer Iconia, but replacing the file breaks their camera.
You need to petition the manufacturer of your particular device to compile an updated version of OMX w/ the drm.play function and include it in an official OTA.
Otherwise root and replace the file yourself with one from a different device and deal with whatever breaks.
^This is how my Netflix patch works. It's a flashable zip with nothing but libnvomx.so from a XOOM 3.2 ROM. I think we are lucky on the Transformer that nothing breaks except for WMV playback.
well the question is did netflix provide moto with that drm files cause more than likely its talor made for them and it may be the only thing that uses it
It IS about money.
Each manufacturer has to pay software/hardware engineers to design their devices and make sure the device works with Android.
--Some manufacturers are likely paying for more/better engineers.
In our case, it's a matter of Asus paying someone to get Netflix working. As noted above, anytime you make changes on software you might break something else. So the engineer(s) have to do all kinds of "magic" to make sure that something works like it's supposed to without disrupting something else...

No, that's not a realistic question at all. As I clearly stated, the drm functions are a part of OMX. Moto simply is using more up to date libraries in their ROM than ASUS.

Agreed. It is NOT, however, about device manufacturers having to pay some sort of imaginary extortion fee to Netflix so that their app will run on a particular device.

When asking about dock RMA I asked about why Netflix was promoted on Transformer website, by Asus etc...
I got this response.
Thank you for contacting ASUS. I do apologize for any possible inconvenience or confusion you have experienced thus far. Please advise that while a native Netflix application may not yet be available, any development or availability of Netflix service on Android tablets is controlled strictly by Netflix and/or Google, as hardware manufacturers have no bearing or control over when software applications are available for the Android OS. With that said, I believe that a Netflix application for Android is well into development and should be available relatively soon.
Again I do apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you again for your consideration.

All true, but still didn't answer my question.
Only hope is Google/Netflix get things worked out sooner rather than later.
That reply from the ASUS rep makes it sound like they didn't even know that a Netflix app for Android was available. Clueless.

Now that you have ICS, wave goodbye to MC3 and other gameloft games

They don't work on transformer prime ics so I doubt they'll work on tf101 ics.
Can't test on my tf101 because I sent it back to asus for repairs a few days ago, are you stuck on bootloops?

In the Prime forums we're pressuring gameloft like we did with asus for their bootloader, they've opened a few games to us I think, just no mc3/o&c yet. Hopefully if we get a version it will work for tf101, since its apparent they won't release for the original transformer.

Are you using the official version from the Market? Dead Space is officially compatible with the Transformer now. There is no reason to go anywhere but the Market for a working version.

Lack of Application Compatibility

I hope this is the correct forum to ask these questions.
1: Can someone help me understand the lack of compatibility between the Transformer and a decent chunk of apps that seem to work just fine on other Android Tablets.
And
2: Does the Transformer Prime have these exact same issues?
Is Asus just using an unusual hardware setup that no other vendor is using or is the software just that borked?
The Transformer is an OK piece of hardware and I wouldn't mind upgrading to a prime or even a 700 when they release but if they will have (or already do have) the same issues I will be switching to another hardware company for my next Android tablet.
I am running stock Rom and just don't feel like going through the hassle of using one of the modded OS's unless they are just "that much better".
Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

What applications are you talking about specifically? Only ones I know of are gameloft games, but I figured out how to make them work by editing a few lines within the apk thanks to a guide I found awhile back.
Yes,
A list of the ones you want that are not working would be good..
While I do get the market telling me that there is a few that are not for the transformer..
I usually push them to my phone then transfer them over..and they work fine..
