I haven't flashed to any Tom's yet, but this seems to be the most popular. Why is that? I looked at the change log and I don't understand what I would be gaining I guess.

same too me, I tried it over 3.1, what I experienced:
- browser little bit slower
- more SOD
- nothing real extra feature
I have to use a custom rom for a couple of reasons:
1) My stock rom is the Chinese verison, which means no google apps or google sync. Without google, it's just not android.
2) I need the Chinese input methods. I would normally switch to the USA stock rom, but it doesn't have Chinese input. Prime does/did, Chinese handwriting input is MIA, but I'll sure it will be taken care of.
I choose to use a custom rom for these reasons:
3) I don't like excess crap on my computer. I can modify a custom rom before I install it, mostly just removing apps that I will never use.
4) Root! I love freedom on my computer. Root lets me do things. All kinds of neat things: block ads, increase speed on sd card, delete/modify system apps and directories, and lots more. Look into it, it is fun.
5) Overclock. Prime doesn't have it, but you can add a kernal that does. I currently don't overclock, but as the Tegra 2 ages, i will overclock it. I'm specifically waiting for a rom with a high GPU overclock. There is one out there that currently does have a minor GPU overclock.
6) Clockwork Recovery. Backup, restore, switch roms, clear cache and more.
Why I choose Prime:
7) Dock battery meter in the taskbar.
8) Reboot/recovery options for power button.
After looking through the current selection of roms available, I choose Prime. But I keep my eye on revolver and Clemsyn.

How do you not? OP clearly states that there are optimizations made to increase load times etc etc.
No, op states "better user experience" which is very vague. Also I'm not having any slow load times, everything is pretty zippy.

Last time I flashed a Tom he punched me in the face...
One reason I haven't seen mentioned would also be themes, but it is still early in the game, there are few options. Custom Roms are generally just optimized better, though the Transformer doesn't have nearly the bloat some Android devices have making them almost essential...
Honestly once you learn, it is such an easy process that flashing different roms/kernels and trying them is the only real way to know what is best for you and your usage.

Then why are you worrying about ROMs? It's obvious you want some of that Baconcomb so just get it already.
Honestly, I don't know why people ever need to "beg" you to try something. If you're happy with what you got already, then be happy.

If you're curious, then just do it... because all in honesty. One person's opinion is only a opinion. The only way you're going to know if it's worth it is from YOUR personal experience. I can personally say that, PRIME 1.6 and root is good and its worth it.
If you don't want to take my word for it, then don't. I'm not going to beg you to do it.

Wow...
He asked what was the difference between stock and Prime, and you went off in another direction. He wasn't asking to be "begged" into using Prime nor asking for others to convince him into using Prime at all.
Anyways, I know Prime has a few optimizations, but I don't know if it brings any substantial changes. There's a link to download the power/recovery mod, so I suppose it could be applied to any ROM including rooted stock.
One reason I would like to root my tf101 is to be able to use a USB dongle. But I am waiting for 3.2 to come out before since I just got my tf101.
The stock version is pretty good actually. No major complaints so far.
I hav ebeen using Prime for a while but ASUS stock version is definitely quite good. Even more so for lack of garbageware that so plagues the mobile phones...
Yea I guess I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a compelling reason to move to a different ROM versus rooted stock. There are too many posts that seem to lead users to believe that a different ROM is the same as root. Remember you can root the stock ROM. The OP is asking what user experience enhancements make Prime (or any other ROM) compelling.
If you read changelog second post it will tell you exactly what's new in the ROM. Many changes are only useful for experienced linux users, but many others are useful for everyone. The nice thing about roms is that most of the things and tweaks are already done for you. If you don't need/care about those changes then there is no point for you to reflash.
Which BXX mod did you get ?
I'm curious because I'm thinking of picking up one of these today ( the guy at Orifice Depot tried to get me to buy an Iconia, but that thing doesn't have anywhere near the support the TF is getting...)....?
Manufacturer's (ASUS included) have to be very careful about their ROM releases so they are thoroughly tested and ready to release to the general public. Consequently they are slower to release updates (i.e. NVidia updates, etc.). Custom ROMs generally consolidate the best and latest releases from various manufacturer's into the most cuttest edge versions you can possibly be running. As you'll notice this can also mean more lock-ups and weird issues since you are getting just-available changes. So if you prefer max stability, stick with the manufacturer's updates. For many of us part of the fun of owning an Android tablet is the rapid pace that custom ROMs are put out and the interesting/quirky things they bring us.

I got a B60 TF and a B60 dock from my local OD this past weekend (Denver, CO).
Prime Vs Stock
Reason why I flashed the Prime Rom. With Prime and a netflix patch I'm able to stream netflix movie. Also now Adhoc connections work. I can Wifi tehther my TF101 with my Driod using the adhoc connection. I can now easily reboot into recovery prior to this going into recovery was a bit tricky. This was not possible even with HC 3.2. Also I don't have to worry about losing root becuase of an OTA update.
I am actually a flashaholic when it comes to flashing roms on my phone. But so far, I haven't come across any compelling reasons to flash custom roms on my transformer. The need to flash roms on phones offer benefits that are non existant on a tablet. For instance, one major reason to flash custom roms on phones is to enable free wifi tethering, which obviously does not apply here. Another reason, as stated above is to remove bloatware. The transformer doesn't really have that. And yet another reason is to be able to update to the latest Android version before the official release. Correct me if i'm wrong but when I looked, the 3.2 update came out officially before any transformer custom roms had it. There are a couple more minor customizations options that I'm not seeing yet being offered by the transformer roms. I am fully aware of the speed enhancements and optimizations that custom roms offer, but considering the custom roms for the transformer are still relatively new (no disrespect or discredit to the devs for their hard work), and considering that even still now, the rooting and flashing methods keep getting outdated and changed, it's too early in this ballgame for me to flash.
I've been lurking the forums here now for a month and finally pulled the trigger, my TF get's here monday.
I have yet to see any reason to flash a custom rom or even root at this point. I'll be rooting it just to say it's rooted and just for a couple of root only programs I have. The custom roms don't really bring anything to the table that this tablet doesn't have. it has the newest version of android with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to be overclocking. I understand netflix is big for some people, but, from what I have read flashing the fix breaks some video playback. I'm ok to wait for the official netflix patch. A 32gb MicroSD and the 16gb on board space is plenty to store movies on for travel etc. I also have a server I run at home that will stream my entire movie,. TV, and music collections directly to me.
Having the best of the best and the most up to date version of android does have it's perks
Two weeks into my new phone and loving it, but now on to some important questions. Some may have been answered before but not all on the same thread. So I'm here to ask. Please don't flame as a nooby to the SG3 scene and rooting THIS phone. Want to keep things simple and all functions WORKING most importantly
1. Should the standard phone guy. by that I mean not wifi tethering etc feel the need to Root his/her phone. Only real win win situation I see as of now is being able to delete bloat ware. But is it worth that on the S3?
2. If you root the phone I'm assuming you may lose some of it's motion controls. Camera features. Jelly Bean is nice but it's coming. Wait and get the real deal or root and take your chances? I just think personally the early gain doesn't quite outweigh the chances of losing something important.
3.On another point roms do add more functionality in areas that some don't. The reason I'm here posting this in the first place is because of paranoid android rom. The option to go hybrid tablet/phone is simply awesome especially on this phone would be reason enough to try it out. Question being I seen VZW EZ Unlocker (Recovery app as well). Which is great but you still have to root your phone correct?
4. Also If I decide to unroot my phone and go back to completely stock is this a SIMPLE viable solution on the VZW sg3? I have rooted my droid and thunderbolt in the past but really wasn't pleased with rom options at all on the thunderbolt. More issues then anything else.
5. Now I have a shiny pretty slim s3 and i'm wanting to make it the best thing possible but not trying to deal with any types of issues. Want it to work flawlessly..(no wifi connection issues/data/signal/force closes.

If your phone works exactly how you want stock, there's absolutely no reason to mess with a good thing. It's only worth it if you like dealing with any potential issues that accompany rooting/flashing, etc. I rooted my GSIII and just added a few apps (Recovery as well). I don't have a need for anything else.

You are confusing "rooting" with "flashing." If you simply just root the GSIII, you're still on stock Touchwiz but now you have root access so you CAN modify system files if you want. If you just root, everything you had set up will be exactly the same and working just the same. If you flash a rom/kernel/mod, this is when you may or may not lose features. You know the risks going in with everything you flash so this is a personal choice. Not everyone is comfortable with losing features of a device they purchased.

Correct, you root the phone to have root access like I described above then you can unlock the bootloader if you desire. Either use EZ Unlock app or use AdamOutler's Casual tool to unlock your device, again each step is your choice. You accept the consequences.

Yes, there are a few guides/methods to unroot. I am posting this comment using my phone so I can't provide a direct link. Go into the Development Section of this forum and check out DroidStyle's guide. I believe Section 6 of that guide has the steps to unroot. It truly is a helpful and easy to follow guide that I suggest you bookmark.

The choice is yours my friend. Like I posted earlier, I rooted just for a few apps (titanium Backup, Adfree for example) and I wanted to do so while there were still exploits working before I received any OTA. Lastly, if you root I suggest you immediately backup your IMEI. If you don't know what this is, there are a couple threads that you should read in the development section that describe in detail what you need to do, why you need to do this, and anything else.

if you run a touchwiz rom (like synergy) i believe you will maintain the nice features like s-beam and motion controls. also because you can run a new kernel i've found that i am getting a few more hours of battery life and more smoothness running the Rom.
being able to use Google Wallet and AdFree are just added perks!

I like you found nothing wrong with the phone other than a lot of bloatware but I want the ability to change anything and everything just because even if they work fine. And rooting this device is so much easier than any device I've ever had there was no point not to.

So I just got home with my brand spanking new 10.1 and I think its high time I void the warranty and get rid of the prerequisite bloatware that Samsung insists on pumping into the device before shipping it. This brings me here with two questions:
1: What is a good de-bloated / efficient ROM to run while I'm waiting for CM10.1 to reach a more stable state?
2: Is there anything different I should know about the tablet rooting / flashing process from the phone rooting / flashing process?
Thanks for any input.
Mate, I found the stock rom runs just fine.... All I did was root it...
It's up to you entirely but if all Samsung phones and tablets were shipped like the Note 10.1, I don't think I'd ever really flash a different rom again...
Would suggest trying it out as is for a few days then go ahead and flash, flash, flash... I do insist you root it however...

Idk... I'll give this one a try, we'll just have to see how stable the ROM stays when I start peeling away the bloatware. If its anything like my past experiences, once the Samsung apps get pulled, the whole system will start to collapse like a house of cards. That's why I tend to prefer preshrunk ROMs, with CM being the best for my tastes.

These tablets kick ass stock. I would read a bit of these forums before any mods. at least use it for a few weeks that way after you modify it you'll be able to tell what broke it. After all these forms go a bit like this, I just flashed rom x and now my tab don't work right. Why mess up perfection. I have tried many and the bug free one is the one the creators made for it, stock
rooting does not void your hardware warranty.. if you screw up software you are on your own but most likely can unroot and flash stock..
I use stock touchwiz on my 8013 .. just rooted and removed all the bloatware..
also you can remove stock installed apps such as maps, google plus, street view, talk, chat on etc.. which take up quite a bit of space is ssystem/app and when you upgrade them anyway in google play the old versions are still there wasting space.. recommend you create a stockapps directory first on sd and copy any app you are about to remove so yhou can always put it back if there is an issue or you need it for an upgrade.
For me there is only one good reason to root a note 10.1 ........... To install [ROOT] FolderMount https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount this app is the bomb.
My stock note 10.1 is way more stable than when it was rooted with a custom rom. The only reason that I would think about rooting again is if I wanted to take advantage of storing my game data and obb files onto ext memory. But once you learn all of the storage locations and file names for those files you can manually move them and achieve the same out come with out rooting but it is a pain to have to move 2gb files back and forth from internal and ext memory.
I should have gotten the 32gb note (but I wanted white) and none of this would be an issue because my stock note runs every app and game I have put on it without an issue.
Good luck no matter what you decide.
.
All I can say for CM10.1 on this tab is, why disable all the multi-window goodness? CM ruins this device, IMO.
I would stick with any rom based on stock.

With so many votes for the stock OS, I guess I'll give it a chance, but I will say that I'm still going to be running into one of my own personal preference problems with the fact that I'm going to want to change the themeing of the stock ROM. I've never been a huge fan of the look of TW, so that may end up being the deciding factor when push comes to shove. I guess we'll see though... if stock is as good as you say, I may have to live with it...

I actually already use Apex, but I generally want the themeing to go deeper to cover things like the system framework etc., which just isn't possible with Apex. I think that's one of my favorite things about CM10, beyond its bare-bones nature, is that it supports one-touch theme changing.
Is the Shield Tablet even worth rooting. I mean, it is stock android with Nvidia stuff. And rooting it just takes away the Nvidia logo when turning it on, and its few apps that do more good than harm. Is there a mod out there that will beat out Lollypop? Only thing I can really think of is Carbon KitKat, and I'm not sure if the Tablet runs crappy because of the hardware or because of the software. I haven't been in the scene for a while (and when I was I wasn't there for long), but my swag snapback wearing friend put Cyanogen on his phone (yes, they're evolving) from the Cyanogen website. Has this in it's essence killed the development for systems since they made it easier to run the OS? Much of the ricing vocabulary is jargon for me, so please explain it instead of avoiding it, for example I don't know the difference between a root vs. recovery vs. rom vs. kernel and TWRP vs ClockworkMod, Unofficial mods vs official.
What do you guys run? What do you recommend visual appeal, and what do you recommend for performance? Can I possibly run Carbon Kitkat while keeping the nVidia apps?
Mehhh I only rooted for xposed modules... honestly stock lollipop with a ntfs SD card to get around the SD card issues and root really isn't a factor in performance. Just using like gravity box and an ad block. I think if you have a lte version it may be more useful so u can mess with radios but I can't vouch for that.

I only rooted for viper audio. Major improvement then without
I'd say its definitely worth it for the fact that you can move all your games off of the internal storage onto the SD card using virtualized directories (ie FolderMount) so the data appears on internal storage but actually resides on your SD (load times have been fine for me with a 64 GB class 10, HL2, Portal, TT Games, etc.)...although I'd probably root either way just for a few specific root apps and the fact I root every android device I ever get.
Side note: PLEASE don't use NTFS on flash storage (unless you absolutely have to)...it doesn't know how to cope with it and over time will have degraded performance. Use exFAT, it was pretty much made for this purpose. I've heard people having issues with exFAT on the shield (specifically 128 GB SDs it seems), but my 64 GB worked perfectly on KitKat and now on LolliPop
Since you're not familiar to the terminology, I'll give you the "concise" (I sometimes ramble...) summary of my understanding:
1. Rooting is giving yourself full administrative power over every single file and operation on your phone. Use this power responsibly, meaning think twice before executing a command and bear the consequences like an adult (or enjoy the benefits like a giddy goof!)
2. Recovery is a partition on your device's storage. Stock recovery usually only automatically performs the one task of factory reset/wipe of your device's data, but a custom recovery can allow you to flash (install) programs or even a customized version of the whole operating system (a custom ROM).
3. ROM technically stands for "Read-Only-Memory" but these days it refers to the actual operating system that's residing within that read-only-memory. You've heard of the Cyanogen ROM, which really means Cyanogen's customized operating system for your read-only-memory.
4. Kernel is basically a magical piece of software that tells your device's hardware how to function. So, if you use the wrong kernel, your device's hardware won't know how to function properly and you'll run into problems. But using a customized or optimized kernel will allow your hardware to function much more efficiently or unlock abilities that your hardware didn't know it could do (e.g. undervolting to save power, communicating with USB devices via USB on-the-go, etc.)
5. TWRP and ClockworkMod are both examples of very popular recovery partitions. Some people prefer one over the other. I personally like TWRP because it has an easier to use interface for me.
6. Unofficial vs official mods are best discussed using an example like a cyanogen ROM. An unofficial cyanogen mod means that it's not officially made by the Cyanogen team and is therefore not supported so you can't go crying to Cyanogen if you've messed up your device using an unofficial mod. Official mods are the stuff officially released by Cyanogen and will be fully supported by their team.
I hope the above helps with your understanding of some terminology. Below, I describe my opinions on whether rooting / custom ROMs are worth it.
I'm currently using the nVidia stock firmware, so I'm not using a custom ROM. The downside is that I miss out on the great customized features like clearing all recent apps from memory, or holding the Overlay button to switch to my last-used app, etc. The upside is that I get to use the nVidia-specific features, such as stylus-only mode (I use it a lot for annotating PDFs / research papers / drawings etc.) or the Console Mode for when I hook up the tablet to the big TV. I've tried a custom ROM and loved the somewhat increased smoothness and extra features, but I personally wanted the nVidia-specific features more than the custom features.
That said, I have rooted my stock nVidia firmware because I wanted to block ads without downloading or purchasing an additional app. I've used the root privileges to allow me to modify my hosts file to redirect ad URLs to 127.0.0.1, which gives those ads no data therefore effectively blocking them. That's all I use my root privileges for, and some of you might think "that's it?!?!" and to that I say "yyyyyyup".
Long post, but congrats for making it this far and thanks for reading!

To me for buy the shield tablet is going beyond on your imagination, why don't try something new, come on is a piece of hardware, you just installing a software and why not with a such powerful device, you don't want more juice and control.
My ST LTE root and some utilty and tool apk got between 60000 and 62000 in antutu performance and stability, but careful in what you do.
I see many people doing modifications and having many issues and then spending a lot of time having to mess with their devices in order to get them back in order. If that's your thing great and I used to be one of you ...
... but these days I try and consider very carefully everything I do so everything works rather than spending hours basically being a mechanic if you want to use a car analogy. I want to drive my car not spend most of the time fixing it.
I see people with a lot of issues after they've done a lot of "do it because it can be done" modifications, their devices become unstable and then they don't know what caused it due to having five or ten major modifications.
One at a time:
1. Nandroid Backup.
2. Do 1 modification
3. Use your device for a day
4. If everything is working, go to 1, otherwise see 5.
5. If everything is not working restore backup from 1. and start at 2. again.
Now my opinions (as a half interested longtime Android user and a new Shield Tab user) are:

Is the Shield Tablet even worth rooting. I mean, it is stock android with Nvidia stuff. And rooting it just takes away the Nvidia logo when turning it on, and its few apps that do more good than harm.

It depends - if there is some added functionality that you cannot have any other way then yes.
Rooting by itself actual does nothing to the ROM but it allows other applications that might change your boot logo. What will change your boot logo usually is using a custom ROM or kernel.
But you can absolutely make any firmware better by rooting your device for example by installing Viper4Android which will improve sound quality and a ton of other stuff.

What do you guys run? What do you recommend visual appeal, and what do you recommend for performance? Can I possibly run Carbon Kitkat while keeping the nVidia apps?

After a few devices it's been my preference to use stock ROM's with custom kernels (sometimes) because I mainly use my phones and tablets to play games and with some rare exceptions the dev community doesn't get to the performance level when I benchmark them.
If I never played games then CM and other custom firmware is better.
Unless I'm mistaken there is no CM based ROM that allows Nvidia Shield Controller usage so for me personally it's even less appealing as a prospect on the Shield Tablet to not run stock.
Since I'm a new Shield Tablet user I've only used some LP version (which arrived with the tablet) then had an awful experience with Nvidia's OTA update when I attempted to update to MM after no mods :|
However I went back to LP v5.1.1 and it's an amazing tablet again which doesn't surprise me as it usually seems you need to stick 1 major version behind on Android if you want to customise it and run apps you like sometimes.
I'm now going to apply a custom kernel onto stock firmware as this has often been the "winning" combination if you want to evaluate ROMs using benchmarks.
First off, a disclaimer: I come from a long line of rooting android phones, from the Nexus of yore to Samsungs and the Axon 7, to now potentially rooting the OP7 Pro. I know what rooting does, I know I can change the ROM, and that will allow me to change the look etc etc. But is there really benefit outside of that anymore?
And what things will I lose by rooting? Will google pay still work? Etc.
I've been getting bored with the stock ROM, not because there's anything wrong with it, I actually have only a 55% urge to root and load up a custom ROM. It's mostly out of boredom to be honest. But I find that as phones progress, my need to root and flash a new ROM shrinks. Especially since this is relatively close to Stock Android in the first place.

Logon just to agree with what OP said. I, too came from a very long line of android phones (#AndroidMasterRace). As I changed from phone to phone, I eventually find it less and less appealing to root and currently rooting my phone just out of habit than actual needs.

As long as Magisk passed with Safety Net, Google Pay will still work. Other than Warranty, you lose nothing. Rooting just let you gain more control over your phone.

You don't even lose warranty.
There is nothing permanent done when unlocking the BootLoader or rooting.
You gain full control.
Do you mean root or custom ROM? You don't need root for a custom ROM...
As for rooting...
Systemwide adblock
Substratum themes
Pixel launcher & recents
Live caption + dark theme assistant
etc
I always root for numerous apps, mods, controls, etc...
Viper4android

Could you list the ones you use or would root to use, I'm also tempted to root but don't really see a big benefit, maybe you can change my mind
Adaway is my big plus to rooting. Doesn't matter what app or game I use, no ads.
Titanium Backup is my other #1 app to have. If I have problems with a specific OS (in my case, I had to downgrade from Android 10 back to 9), Titanium Backup put all my (game) data back without issues.

seconded. adaway is the main reason for me too. and Viper4Android
Im looking for a ROM that enables free tethering built in. Does anyone know of any? That's the main benefit of rooting for me.
I've been rooting and ROMing since the HTC Hero. I used to chase nightlies, kernels, new homescreen every day.... all looking to make slow phones faster and more useable.
Phone hardware is actually pretty stellar now, especially this one.
So all I do is root the stock rom, install ad block and Viper4android.
Being able to update firmware from the manufacturer OTA and maintain root with just a few clicks is the best thing since sliced bread for me.
Android manufacturers have finally started adding things to their stock launchers and builds that now make some mods and rooting and obsolete.
But Instill use it to customize my Waze map colors and Adaway. Otherwise, no reason and been thinking of jumping to the new Galaxy S11 plus when it comes out. Will see.
I root for Viper, to try custom kernels and to mod various visual aspects of OOS. You do lose HD quality Netflix and Prime video but I rarely watch them so its worth it for me.

For me, I root for substratum, xposed edge, exi for SwiftKey, adaway, custom kernels, (magisk) roms, viper4android, probably a few more but that's just off the top of my head. Also, not the person you replied to.
Sent from my OnePlus7Pro using XDA Labs
You should root you don't loose anything
And i overclocked the phone like crazy fast,
There are many benefits for rooting
I'm not rooting this time cause I dont want to lose the stable system that I have. I like its last of battery and I am okay with the speed of the phone. I think I will pass rooting this time
Adaway, viper4android, google dailer with call screen, downclocking the cpu, getting rid of all unnecessary apps and background processes. Aux camera's in gcams. And i have gpay and banking apps still working....
