If you look at my signature you can see how many phones I have had.
In fact I have had many more, just can't be bothered to update my signature.
So why the Desire S ?
I mean its a mid-range phone right!. No swanky dual core or 1920x1280 screen or nvidia GTX 3D chip, etc.
Well heres the thing.
There will always be people that need the latest for something, maybe a game, maybe a massive screen for browsing (like they can't browse at the office or at home) but the majority of people have two usages of a phone:
1. A Jobbing phone. A phone that is actually used to make phones calls alot of the day. Here a Nokia 6700 or lower trumps the bill!
2. An email phone that can be used to browse abit and occasionally use an app
The problem is that no phone can do both well. Simply because a phone that is too big for 1 can be too small for 2. A phone that does 2 soaks up the battery, etc, etc.
So why the Desire S ?
For many years I have been hoping for the following to come together and it has never been delivered to date:
1. Smaller/lighter device
2. Large screen, say 3.5" or bigger, that goes to the edges. In glass mind, not plastic!
3. Metal body, with quality feel and joy of ownership
4. Touch buttons. Yeah, I like real buttons more, but at the end of the day they get dirty and are mechanical and thus the weak point of the phone
5. Clear bright screen, at least 800x480
6. All the mod cons. Android 2.3 is clearly a very together OS (although WP7 and iOS are great as well)
7. Store apps on the SD card, which is replacable
8. Front facing video camera
9. FM radio (bye bye iphone)
10. Great browser, mutiple emails accounts
11. A super-large and useful list of apps
12. A battery that can get me through 1 business day and 2 weekend days
13. Good quality phone calls
Well the Desire S is it.
It ticks all the boxes.
It is compact, stylish and beautiful to hold and it works slick enough to forget things about speed.
Its a phone I can really use, it just works and fast!
No unecessary 4" screen, no weight, no silly proprietry usb connector, free cloud to store contacts and diary, reasonable battery life, enough memory internally and a replacable card.
Sure I would like double the battery life, double the cpus, but do I really need them ? no.
From the total pain of the HTC Universal through all the incarnations of WM and iOS, I feel I have finally come home
at least for another 6 months .......
PS: I can strongly recommend the "case-mate barely there" hard shell. A bit difficult to get on but protects the back and sides well without adding bulk to the phone or detracting from the shape
+1, I love HTC Build & Sense, especially when I see plastic phones with crappy UI like LG or Samsung phones! (just my personal opinion)
Got to agree 100%. Ive had every iphone and both of googles phones i do say the Desire S is like having a combination of both but even better. Althought I dont need to root the Desire S as much, as it does and looks very well, a big part of me really wants it rooted. Now that would be having my cake and eating it aswell ;-)

It may have gorilla glass (its on their website), but can appear to scratch.
As I've read within this forum and my own phone has proven....there is a layer on top of the gorilla glass, effectively a coating which can scratch....as my has. But the scratches are tiny and only visible from certain angles and therefore don't inhibit the viewing experience.
I must also agree and echo the thoughts of @colonel it is a great phone!

Nice review, you are write it ticks all boxes, but most pl now a days want the brute power and force for heavy gaming, browsing etc... therefore many ppl get the sgs 2..
it's a real shame as i would like to see some big development going on here on the DS...
i've liked it since the start, so hopefully i can get one too!
Yeah, well some people, would feel awkward walking down the street, holding a big THING at the ear....(if you don't use a bluetooth headset)
If you want something purely for gaming and browsing use a laptop.
If you want a PHONE, that actualy fits in your pocket, that you can also use to check your email, social networks, browse the web on a decent sized screen, and when you get bored, play some games you can download from the market... you get--> DESIRE S

so how do you guys find using the 3.7 inch screen? is it sufficient for good web browsing, gaming?

Find it perfectly adequate for browsing....but then I'm coming from from HTC Touch Diamond 2.

yeh... i also don't see much of an advantage of dual core when it comes to gaming..
i tested angry birds on my sgs 2 , OSF, ipod, and tab, they all run the same!
same with spiderman mayhem city.. (although a bit laggy on the OSF, but that could be because of the 600 mhz cpu)
dual core only really shines in web browsing.... it's soooooooooo buttery smooth when viewing heavy flash content.. no lag what so ever!!!
i also wouldn't really play games on the desire s , as i do most of it on the big screen (galaxy tab)
I also went for the HTC Desire S simply because it's the best phone for me atm. It's got the stable build (i'm coming from the HTC Legend, once u go aluminium...) and it's just super powerful.
People's first reaction will probably be "it's not super powerful! Tegra2 is way more powerful!". No, really, Tegra2 is too powerful. The Desire S gets 60fps in neocore where Tegra2 gets 75 or 80 perhaps? That's not a big difference, keeping the batterylife of the desire s in mind.
Also, i just tested out the srs sound enhancement. I thought my Galaxy S had decent sound (5.1 option), but holy f*ck, this must be the best sound I ever heard from a device (testing with high fidelity headphones). I've had the ipone, magic, legend and galaxy s before. I also have srs sound enhancement on my laptop, and it's very hard to spot the difference in percepted quality. Strange thing reviews haven't talked about this before.
After playing around with my girlfriends Desire S for a few days I am not liking it much tbh, yes the sense ui is cool but everything else runs slow and choppy for a 1ghz cpu adreno 205 gpu and 768mb ram, and for gaming, well, not impressed at all, my old SE X10 ran games better for some odd reason (my guess being htc sense slowing everything down)
Nice little phone for general use (and definitely a girls phone) but anything demanding you see it soon struggle.

i suspect it is more to do with un-optimised software... the dhd and incredible s with the same hardware, absolutely fly with general peformance and gaming.. htc will hopefully rioll up another update

thanks for the positive thoughts everyone!
in terms of your quote specifically, mine doesn't run choppy. Are you upated to 2.3.3 ?
haven't tried turning sense off but probably can.
I use the phone for phoning, emails and browsing. And some apps, but the games I like, like tower defense and stuff, run really well.
I had NOVA on my previous iphone 4. A great game to demo it but not comfortable running a full 3D shoot-em-up on such a small device for more then a few minutes.
Maybe if I was 15 again .....
Its the form factor of the Desire S which I really like.
Its just small enough to be comfortable but has a screen thats quite useable.
Look, I wouldn't want to browse on it all day. If I needed a portable browser I would take my ipad. Under 10 inches does not really cut it for long term browsing.
Which is why I think a 4" or 4.3" screen is a step too far, not a big change in browsing but a larger battery drain and an uncomfrtable phone to slip in your pocket.
Maybe the Desire S2 wil have dual core in 12 months. Wouldn't say no to that if the kept it compact, but for now this is the best of the bunch for me anyway!
For me
Desire->Desire GD->Desire S
Sofar ive not looked back.
Awesome piece of hardware (even stock)

Samsung was kind enough to send me an Infuse 4G to review. Id love to know what you guys(owners/every day users) think so far. Anything major to watch out for? Thoughts on the UI, etc. As a fan of larger display myself, im actually finding 4.5" to be "almost" to big. Any feedback is appreciated guys.
I think the screen is almost perfect. The only thing I would change about it is I would add the qHD screen that the Atrix has for a better resolution on a 4.5" screen. But, with that said, the Super AMOLED Plus display gives very vibrant colors and I find it beautiful.
The UI is mediocre, I ended up using launcher pro instead for a more custom feel.
All in all a great phone.
well, i think this and the atrix really fight for the title of best att branded phone. the phone is fast and extremely responsive. the screen is half an inch smaller than my dell streak but theres alot less bezel and its a really thin and light device making it great for pocketing or holding for extended periods. on the subject of the screen, the super amoled plus display is amazing in low indoor light being that it only backlights the colored pixels on the screen rather than a traditional lcd that backlights the whole screen so blacks appear as a litup dark grey. this gives it really high contrast and colors really pop. you can really see this if you hold up another phone, like an iphone, next to the infuse. to be honest, this may impress you but dont expect it to blow you away on first use.
at first hold it doesnt feel like a crappy cheap device, its only until you actually take off the back that you see that some of the materials used arent as high quality as you expect. though the design is really nice, and i like the texture on the back that isnt a fingerprint magnet and takes away from the fact that its very thin plastic. if id have to say, the materials used are to make the phone as thin as possible, even thinner than the iphone 4 which apple still claims is "the thinnest smartphone" available to buy to date.
the battery is quite large, 1750mah, which is one of the largest ive seen in a phone, second to the atrix with its 1930mah. ive found it will get me by for a week with the screen off, and a few hours with heavy usage on the screen on. it seems the screen takes up a surprising amount of the battery, every time i check battery usage, the display will say something around 85%.
the touchwiz interface seems to be a bit of a downer on the phone. while the icons and colors arent that bad, they seem like an unnecessary change to the stock google android look. im not a fan of the touchwiz launcher and the way it encapsulates the icons to look like an iphone (frankly). but with it being android, all i have to do to change that is install another launcher like launcher pro. stock, the phone does come with some maybe unwanted att bloatware like yellow pages and att navigator. it does come with two apps i think are useful like the myatt app that will help you keep track of your usage, and att hotspots which will log you in if you are in a place att provides free wifi. it does also come with one hidden background app called tethermanager, which is atts way of blocking you from natively tethering this phone if you are not paying for a data plan that allows for tethering. this can be removed if you are rooted. not that i would go around recommending people to break att's terms of usage. this is the first android device from att that does not have the "unknown sources" option removed from settings. this allows you to install apps using their apk rather than just from the market. i believe this was only because the amazon marketplace installs apps this way since only google allows the android market to install apps natively.
the camera is pretty good. it comes with an 8mp 720p rear camera and 1.3mp front camera and takes decent pictures in high and low light. i found an anti-shake feature in the softwares menu which really helps improve taking care of any motion streaking in the pictures. you cant take video from the front facing camera, im not really sure why this is, but its something i kind of wish was there. the phone also includes an hdmi adapter so you can mirror you phones display on the big screen or watch a video or share some pictures together. this is actually a great advantage as the phone also includes native divx playback.
the kindest thing i can say towards att's 4g network is... its unfinished. ive gone to spots where the network is really bad and really good. luckily im in an area where ive found atts network to be the best for me. im getting around 10mbits down, but ive heard of some people getting up to 14mbit. while you should get hspa+ in all areas you used to get 3g, dont always expect to get 4g speeds. the network has not been upgraded in all places and can get really bogged down.
this phone isnt the phone for everyone, there are smaller, more durable, and cheaper phones. if i where to point any positives out about this phone they would be that it has a large, high contrast screen, the camera takes good photos, it includes an hdmi adapter, and it has great performance. some negatives would be the screen is only wvga, not qhd as you may be expecting on newer devices, the phone is a bit plasticy and for the price you may wish every now and then the material quality was better, and the 4g in the name really suggests it will be a better phone on the network when really the network has a while before its up to the standard youll be expecting.
i hope ive been useful and provided enough information to help you make a useful review. let me know how it goes.

its 512MB ram which imo is kinda incompetent compared with atrix (1GB) and other 4G phones. Also its completely unknown whether we will receive an official gingerbread update.
For the rest, I think it's just perfect, especially the screen, way better than the Atrix's.
love it, not everything is about specs(look how successful the evo is with an old power hog processor crappy gpu and lame network) but when it comes down to it the hummingbird processor is still top dog in video playback and fairs pretty well in open gl compared to any new processor so despite being single core it is a much better product for the time than the evo was. the phone has less samsung bloat, (missing apps are in the market) the att bloat is still there but fortunately they are actually market links so they dont actually take up storage, just screen space which is still lame but it is a contract phone, what do you expect? i like touch wiz. it is much easier on the eyes than stock android and the contacts app with sliding for mms and phone calls are sweet. the lock screen has little rhyme or reason but is easy to use, decent looking and convenient. the camera app was better on the sgs, having a bright flash doesnt negate the need for options that work in low light. the sgs had the greatest low light pictures, the flash on this phone works great but led's just dont distribute light evenly. samsung could have stepped it up rather than releasing an app with fewer options than the captivate. the ffc takes mirrored images, not cool to see the text backwards on my t-shirt.
gingerbread would have been nice since samsung clearly has the ability to do it having one of the first 2.3.3 updates for an existing phone, but clearly att has little aspirations to beat the other non nexus phones in america to having 2.3 just because they can. that would be trying to hard. it is a shame because the sgs runs so good on 2.3 we are really missing out on what the hummingbird platform can do.
im also bummed that samsung couldnt get the studios to licence media hub to be played through hdmi. the movies are pretty good quality and they are hard enough to pirate. i guess if you coud output it at high res they are afraid people will use video capture cards to rip the movies.. lame!
really it is an awesome device, but no device satisfies every need. i know it has to do with business plans and contracts, the device is otherwise near perfect but it still bothers me.

it is 512mb application ram. (sgs was also rated as 512 but they meant 512 total so i had to make the distiction) it is actually 640mb including video ram which is really a perfect amount if you ask me. i think the rom should be light on ram rather than having huge amounts of ram so the developers can get sloppy.
still not sure if its as capable as mt htc inspire is the inspire just seems built so much better and well sense imo kicks the butt of touchwiz

Thanks !!! Thought about it- Studied the specs and I am keeping it.
keeping my skyrocket.
just didnt feel the LG nitro was worth paying the extra $35. The HD screen is nice but wasn't blown away; the superamoled Plus display and UI on skyrocket is good enough for me. The skyrocket felt better in my hands as well. Smaller internal storage and battery concerns about the LG nitro didn't help either.
for another comparison, check out mobiletechreview.
i was in an at&t store today, and played with both phones. the nitro's screen is really stunning. i do prefer it over the skyrocket's. i also love the textured back, and general build quality of the phone.
however, the nitro was noticeably laggy. simple things like opening menus, or the app drawer caused significant hesitation. i also ran my standard web browser test where i open a heavyweight desktop-version website (http://surf-forecast.com). the skyrocket opened it fast, and scrolling was butter smooth even while the page was still loading. can't say the same for the nitro. even after the page fully loaded, scrolling and zooming was not butter smooth at all.
you can't judge a phone by one web page, but the difference was so large that i didn't bother trying any others. maybe the demo phone they had there was messed up somehow, or maybe future rom updates will smooth things out, but it looks to me like that HD screen on the nitro is taxing the hardware too much.
this quote from diane hackborn's recent post seems to add credence to this theory:
As device screen resolution goes up, achieving a 60fps UI is closely related to GPU speed and especially the GPU’s memory bus bandwidth. In fact, if you want to get an idea of the performance of a piece of hardware, always pay close attention to the memory bus bandwidth. There are plenty of times where the CPU (especially with those wonderful NEON instructions) can go a lot faster than the memory bus.

GPS of LG Nitro
Hi guys,
For people who have the LG Nitro, could you comment on the GPS sensitivity:
- How long does it take "GPS Test" app to lock?
- Accuracy as reported by GPS Test or Google map
- Does GPS maintain lock with Google Navigation?
Thank you.

This was my experience, too. I wanted to like this phone. The textured back is nice, the resolution is amazing, the screen quality is really good (except blacks, at the highest brightness, are meh next to Skyrocket), and I liked little things, like the tall widescreen (less width on the phone, easier in the hand) and the three buttons (I feel better for ICS), but the lag! Oh, how the lag killed this thing.
I'm not sure if it's the high resolution or LG's Touchwiz Lite, which I hear is poorly coded, but stuttering and jittering was the rule when scrolling. On a brand new unused store unit, it was bad enough to be frustrating in a 15 minute demo. If this gets an AOSP or CM ROM, it may turn out to be better than the Skyrocket, but until then, stay away. This phone is unusable without some good devs, sad to say.
I really wanted to buy it. Why can't AT&T have one phone with no compromises?

to keep you wanting more.................
I cannot believe that people actually think the display on the Nitro is better. With both phones side by side full brightness the super amoled plus blows that IPS out of the water. Rich Eye Popping Colors and Dark Blacks Compared to the Mediocre Bland Display on Nitro. I know comparing 720 to 800x480 is crazy and the pixels are sharper on Nitro but as far as displaying two 1080p videos the Skyrocket still Looks a lot better in my opinion. Real world test with the phone a foot away you cannot tell that our Amoled Plus is not same resolution as the Nitro. I hate when someone boast about the resolution and you have to zoom in 150% just to see the difference or put the phone 2" in front of you. Whatever the case My White Galaxy Skyrocket is On Top at this Moment. Bring on ICS and Butterfinger to that Nexus.(Was so excited for the Nexus but with the messed up launch and bad news after bad news I could not make myself get it now Screw you Google)
my take on the Nitro vs Skyrocket
Phone looks and feels amazing.
I liked the screen, but clarity was nowhere near what it is on the Skyrocket. Sad too because color felt dead on (not over saturated, more real life on the Nitro) But it was "fuzzy" and did not show as much detail
Performance..dead on exactly the same on Antutu EXCEPT for RAM, the Nitro scored MUCH higher.
Linpack scores were high 80's-low 90's compared to the Skyrockets mid 70's low 80's
the deal killer....the rear speaker
At full volume we could barely hear multiple youtube videos that played loud and clear on the display Skyrocket and our Inspire
I did this test display vs display in store. We spent an hour in there.
I did notice the wierdness mentioned about the browser buttons on the bottom but it was not that big of a deal to me.
Oh, and I know I would break that usb port cover lol
and of course..the 4gb internal mem is a huge deal to me but I was willing to overlook it
in the end we ordered 2 white skyrockets from bestbuy for $139 each (frys electronics pricematch)
It really is a great phone, but not in the key areas I WANT it to be

Hi guys,
For people who have the LG Nitro, could you comment on the GPS sensitivity:
- How long does it take "GPS Test" app to lock?
- Accuracy as reported by GPS Test or Google map
- Does GPS maintain lock with Google Navigation?
Thank you.

I have the phone, and the GPS is the best I have ever used. I locked 12 Sats in 3-4 secs on an overcast day. It also locked while I was sitting like 5 feet from the window on the first floor of a 2 story house. Like it literally doesn't get off more than 3-4 meters of accuracy. On Google navigation it's a clean arrow all the way, no enlarging blue circles .
Again my contract was up, so I was deciding between Nitro and SR. I went with the Nitro for the screen initially but everything just works perfect on it except the battery life. It's not good at all, and I can't even force it to do 3G only to save battery.
SR is a pretty sweet phone too. Tough decision for me. Also the Nitro was $150 not $250 like most reports. If it were $250, I would went with the SR no doubt.
Hi.
I need your help. I'm confused about that device because I read about his problems (For example: THE Sensitive button).
And about his poor battery life which can't survive for one full day..
And that I can get only 10GB of RAM, so I can't put much apps/movies/music/photos.
And I hope that it doesn't get too hot in heavy / easy use.
But I still like this model.
I'm wondering if I should buy this model or to buy Galaxy s2 / something else.
(I don't want big screen - 4.3 is enough for me P: )
- Do you recommend me to buy it or to buy something else?
- Please tell me everything you know about this model - the good and the bad
It's really important for me.

Battery life - User dependant. Also other factors can impact this such as signal strength, type of data used, screen brightness. Looking at the battery stats thread it seems fine, better than my HOX and that's saying something.
10GB of user space available. 4GB for system & 2GB for apps. Plenty for apps. You have 10gb available to you for music, movies, photos etc. For some this is enough for others not so much. But with the ability to sync items to cloud storage for most it shouldn't be an issue.
Heat - Can't comment, but from various reading it seems cooler than other devices.
Not got the device but comparing to let's say the SGS2 this seems to have a higher resolution screen despite having a pentile screen.
Audio - Read it has one of the cleanest outputs on a mobile device, not heard it personally but it should be fine.
CPU - The S4 is one of the best dual cores around, so much there is a shortage and pretty soon they will switch to the S3. So grab the S4 version whilst you still can. It's plenty fast and outbenches some of the quads out there.
Sense - HTC's overlay, you'll love it or hate it. I love it. Has good contact management, lovely widgets, good for social networking, and such but can be a memory hog.
Camera - HTC has done a good job on the camera front. Like my HOX I like the pictures that it takes and the burst mode is a blessing. The software is also good and easy to use.
LED - This has a notification light, albeit 2 colours only compared to some other devices but at least it has one.
To sum it up it's a good mid range device. And should serve you well. Not having the device myself I'm only giving you my thoughts from reading reviews and taking some parts of my HOX.

I like your comment a lot! thank u!
By the way, If I will buy the HTC SENSATION XE and install on it the android 4, it could be better then the HTC ONE S ? Because it has better battery, and I can use memory card.

I'd say think about longer term, it's an older device. The One S is the newer device and I'd be thinking about Jelly Bean the next android version. One S being newer would more likely be quicker to get it than the XE. It'll have more support from HTC.
Looking at the specs of both phones:
HOS is faster,
HOS reportedly has better battery life,
HOS has better screen in regards to viewing angles and sunlight compared to the first generation SLCD, again this could be subjective,
HOS is thinner and ligther,
HOS has the better camera,
HOS has native Sense 4 support,
HOS has 1gb of RAM compared to XEs 768MB,
You'll enjoy either but if you can I'd opt for the HOS if storage space isn't that important to you.

I have both the Sensation and One S and there is really no comparison, the One S is much better. I still like my Sensation but the One S is better looking and feeling, has better battery life and a nicer screen, and is much faster.
I haven't had any of the problems that people have reported here (sensitive button, poor reception etc.). Battery life has been good for me so far, and while it does warm up when you're using it heavily it's not "hot" by any means.
The lack of SD slot is not really a problem for me, but whether you can live with it depends on your usage. I've never used more than 4GB of SD card on my Sensation, so the 10GB on board is more than enough.
The only problems I would be concerned about are:
1) Chipping on the black version. I honestly think it's overblown (like most issues with all phones, only people who have problems speak up), but if you are really worried about it get the silver one. It looks even better IMO and it won't chip as the finishing process is different.
2) Getting the 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 version instead of the 1.5GHz S4. The S3 is the previous generation chip, used in the Sensation, and is slower (despite the higher clock speed, the architecture is different) and uses more power. I don't know if there's a way to tell what you're going to get beforehand, though. Only thing I can think of is if you see "1.7GHz" anywhere on or near it, stay away.
Read my one S review (and all the other posts by me in that thread as well, as I have updated some stuff like wifi speeds and battery life, last update was today, so the last post will be useful for you) in sig and also read my post here addressing your issues/questions:

As for the heat, only gets hot when you're charging it, but this is the same for every device, in use for games etc. mine is pretty cold to touch
There is also a video in my last post in the neowin review thread showing a thermal output test comparison between the GS 2, Razr and the S.

Speaker for the HOX is fine, not as loud as say the SGS3 but it's consistent where as the SGS3 can be distorted on higher volumes. I prefer the ringtone sounds out of the HOX than SGS3.

Ok and when you use your smartphone as a cellphone (Make a call to someone), so how does the person on the other side hear you? Clean? Horrible ? Loud?

Speaker is great, better than the GS 2 all round.
Here is what GSMarena had to say about the audio:
The cleanest audio output we have seen
The HTC One S performance in our audio quality test came as a really pleasant surprise to us. It appears that the Beats influence hasn't been limited to a single equalizer preset this time as the smartphone delivers the cleanest output we have seen from any device so far.
When connected to an active external amplifier, the HTC One S audio is simply flawless - volume levels are a little above average and it got excellent scores on every part of our test.
What's most impressive though is the One S retains virtually the same performance when you plug in a pair of headphones. The stereo crosstalk takes the tiniest dip of any smartphone we've seen so far, while the rest of the readings are either totally unaffected or worsen by an undetectable amount. Volume levels remain the same too, so it's arguably the most impressive overall performance to date.

Very good! Call quality is great for me.
Loud (can adjust the volume) and clean.
You have dual mics, so any background noise is blocked out Obviously extreme noise like cars racing right beside you and loud music might not be completely blocked out and besides you won't be able to make the other person out anyway

So far, I see that people prefer HTS ONE S
That's nice, and now I really want it XDDDDD
I've just upgraded to this phone from the Desire S. I was thinking about getting the One X or the S3 too but I want a high end mobile phone not a mini tablet. This phone is amazing coming from a rooted desire S, its so fast and smooth I don't plan on rooting it.
My advise is to simply get this phone.

Are you asking me or someone else?
1) The battery life on this phone sucks. Expect to be getting no more than 4 hours of usage on average. The iphone 4/4s gets a solid 6 hours of usage. Thats 150% more battery life and I don't need to fiddle with the settings at all to achieve this.
2) The hardware has major design flaws. First of all the black one has that chipping problem with the paint. Well I have used my phone for less than 2 months and it looks butchered as hell. People complain about the iphone 4/4s, well I dropped a gazillion times and it still looked almost brand new when I sold it. I dropped the 1S one time! and the paint already came off. The front camera is recessed and gathers dust like crazy. It's impossible to clean it because its recessed and the dust has no where to go. Crap and dust also builds up near the top plastic cap. The speakers are also located exactly on the back of the phone. So if you put your phone on your table, you can't hear it ringing. Not only that the volume is so low. I missed tons of calls.
3) The community for this phone sucks. There is barely any activity on the fora and development for custom roms is stagnating. I mean sense is crap and there is only like 1 guy working on cm9? And correct me if I am wrong but the last version of AOKP is like from 3 weeks ago with tons of bugs. Now look at the Galaxy Nexus or the 1X fora. Or look at the SGS3 fora and that phone has not even been completely released yet. Its crazy. And this is worrying cause even sense has tons of bugs. There is for example this 3g/H switching that still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.
4) Then there is this low resolution pentile screen. Well its definitely ok and you shouldn't worry about it. But you WILL notice a huge difference if you put it next to the nexus, 1X or the iphone 4/4s and you will run in to all kinds of trouble with apps. For example while my own 720p videos looks good on this phone, youtube videos will look crap no matter how high you put the settings. There are tons of these annoying things. The screen is the reason why its not quite yet a flagship device while it could have been.
That being said I think its the best android phone on the market. Its the fastest android phone on the market. It doesn't have a cheap flimsy plastic body and it has a thin and light design. Aluminum feels really good on the hand especially when its cold. Its like 100 dollars/euro cheaper than the 1X and SGS3. I'd wait for the iphone 5 though. And if that turns out to be nothing or if the wait is too long then go ahead and purchase the 1S cause thats what I recommend out of the top3 android phones.

Once again, all of that is in YOUR opinion and from your usage only as well, plenty of people including me have had the exact opposite to you. Just because you experience problems doesn't mean that every one else will....
1. Is that on screen time your talking about? If so that is very good! (depending on usage and screen brightness) No other android phone gets anywhere near that unless the screens are set to like 0% and airplane mode enabled for a bit. Just look at my review and you will see the usage that I am getting from a single charge, now go and find me an android phone on stock ROM with a stock battery that can beat that (apart from the motorola razzr for obvious reasons). The iphone 4/4s also seem to have a problem with battery life for quite a few people, heck apple have even released a number of updates iirc to try and fix the battery drain
Plus don't forget that the iphone 4/4s doesn't have the same amount to do as an android phone.
2. The MAO issue is not a "hardware" problem, but a design fault.... Also I have had my phone since release day and still have no signs of chipping anywhere apart from inside the USB port plus HTC have addressed this now as they have got a design, which has a bevelled USB and less sharper edges. Well you were extremely lucky with your 4s then as due to the build of it and being mostly glass, the screen is almost always guaranteed to shatter when dropped......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elKxgsrJFhw
It all depends on where abouts the ground impacts the mobile, you could be lucky or not so lucky with any device. If you want to be safe than sorry then a case is a necessary item for all mobiles, even the GS 2. Some devices are just more durable than others.
I have had no problems with dust getting under my screen, had my mobile since April, yes dust does gather in the front camera part, however, a quick blow and wipe with a pencil in a cloth sorts that problem out.
Emmmm what? The volume is amplified a wee bit when it is placed on the desk due to that reason, you can raise the volume as well you know or use a louder ring tone, you must be pretty deaf if you can't hear your mobile ringing......
3. The community isn't great, but it is starting to pick up now especially since the kernel source was posted, there are a few good ROMs from what I have read such as trickdroid and leedroid. Sense is crap in your opinion, many people including me love it and I for one won't be changing to a stock ICS ROM as I don't want to loose the features of sense, which IMO are better than the alternatives. The gallery, dialer, calendar, clock app are superb and not to mention the sense camera along with all the features, which you won't find on any other mobile or stock ICS ROM. Of course the galaxy nexus is going to have a damn good developing community, it's only the official/stock android phone that all the developers use to develop apps for and was the first phone to have a 720P display. The developing community here will never be as good as the the 1X or GS 3 community as they are the "flagship" devices and the phones that everyone will go for just for because of that "term"
Also the tegra chipset is apparently proving to be hard to work with for the developers with the 1X due to nvidia lack of support.
What are these bugs you speak off? I haven't had any problems with mine, super stable, super quick and smooth, multi-tasking is fine as I have disabled a lot of sense stuff and apps that I don't need and am using apex etc. instead.
If you look at my other post addressing issues you will see that I don't have the 3G/H bug, along with many other people.
The iphone is well known to have signal issues as well, not remember the 4 or 4s release where people were complaining about terrible signal, and apple said essentially "you're holding the phone the wrong way" and had to give out free bumper cases to solve the issue as it was a problem with the new antenna that they were using......
4. There is no problem with the screen, sure it ain't 720P and doesn't use RGB matrix, but it is perfectly good and better than most other mobiles screens apart from the ones you mentioned along with a couple of SE mobiles. The screen is nice and sharp still, the only areas I notice the pentile matrix is with white text on black backgrounds and some icons and even still I have to put my eyes right up to the screen. Plus the reason HTC went with with the pentile version is because the battery life is better with it than the RGB version (same reason Samsung went with pentile on the GS 3 instead of RGB). What kind of trouble have you run into with all these apps that you speak of because of the screen? What on earth are you talking about again??? Youtube videos will look crap no matter what settings you put them on??? The youtube videos look great.
Seriously, it sounds to me like you have a faulty one s if that is truly what you are experiencing.......
And after all that you still think the 1S is the best android device there is

Just buy it. It's a fine phone. These have been snapped up by many in the UK past few days due to a cheap contract deal so many more HOS users in the pipeline.

Always curious to hear.
Got mine yesterday.
It's all screen! Lighter, thinner than GS3. Feels more like a small, thin Note 2 which is a good thing to me. Not so bubbly as GS3. Screen is amazing. Bloatware is out of control. The back looks kind of like snake skin.
The speaker is much louder than GS3. So far, I love it. Haven't even tried the features yet!
Anyone else?:good:
Got mine yesterday as well. Extremely nice screen! Gorilla Glass 3 resists finger prints better then advertised in my opinion and the overall 5 inch display is incredible. Super zippy but yes, comes loaded with Samsung and AT&T Apps but this shouldn't be too surprising as Samsung did advertise there software quite a bit. Only natural they put there mark in it. On the flip side all this is easily fixable once a root is out but EVEN with this stuff the phone manages to handle it's memory well and work fast.
Overall I am glad I waited and after a couple of weeks I think there people freaking out are really gonna kick themselves for getting all worked up over stupid problems that are easily dealt with.
Got mine yesterday. see my bloatware thread.
Hardware is amazing and top notch. Software is so bloated and bogged down that, when combined with locked bootloader, I will strongly consider returning.
People might flame me for this, but even with the bloat disabled and using Nova launcher, my gs3 running slim bean is faster on everyday tasks.
Just hit 5% battery life and the phone just automatically reduced brightness to a point that I can barely use it, and phone won't let me crank it back up. Just way too much garbage.

screen is mind blowingly good, i had a HTC one for 3 days before i got my GS4 and honestly the one was closer to the s4 then i thought it would be. the one had less bloat and it stutter a bit less (after freezing bloat my phone has gotten ALOT better). camera is awesome love the quality and wow this phone is so small for 5 inches. coming from a note 2 and a temporary lumia 920 this thing feels tiny and light, honestly one of the major selling points of the gs4 is it's bezel less design (imo). if bootloader stays locked for long i am selling it or trading it for the one or octa core version.... its a shame that the stock rom is so bloated, i traded the one back because i thought sammy software would blow htc out the water but it didn't . One more thing, the GS4 tv remote works 10000 times better then the htc one. htc could not sync to my sound bar or u-verse box no matter what i tried, the GS4 had that working in seconds. i have 3 remotes just for my bed room and the fact that i do not need them is a huge plus.

You might need to play with the settings some more for the auto brightness settings. As for the lag, AOSP ROMs have always been faster (in my experience) to Touchwiz Roms. I'm going to put up with the stock Touchwiz for as long as I can before trying out the first releases of AOSP on the GS4. I'm hopeful we will see some crazy development action if it's true the Quad-core international version ROM's can easily be ported to the US versions and vice versa. The international GS3 had so much to chose from. I was perfectly happy on my GS3 using AOKP, but I'm sure I'm not going to regret moving over to the GS4. I had the same debate when switching from the GS2 to the GS3.
I dont get mine till tonight, but I found one in a best buy mobile store and was surpised at how much stuttering I saw just going through the homescreens.
Im hoping that when I disable all the eye tracking stuff that will all run better.

I'm sold
I tried the htc one remote control feature and liked it. Only thing I really liked, glad to hear the gs4 one is better. Definitely comes in handy.
How is the camera? Especially the dual shot feature(I feel I'll be using this alot )? And the other camera features?

Here are some photos I snapped this morning in challenging conditions: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oll6vneulv13mz6/TZcApg0pCD
Overall, better than Galaxy S3 by a decent margin. But I used to have an iPhone 5, and my initial impression is that the IP5 takes better pictures than the GS4, at least in these conditions. I feel like it was extremely rare that I got a bad photo out of that phone, even in a relatively dark room as in these pictures, but as you can see in my link, several of these are pretty bad.

Your pics look pretty good to me. I'm viewing them on my 24" monitor at work though. Cute dog btw. I'm sure compared to the ip5 the gs4 will have better detail due to the higher resolution in normal conditions? Is there an exposure setting? Or other settings to help low light conditions?

Now that I've taken a second look, I guess you are right that they are pretty decent, except for one of them. I'm so used to looking at things on a small screen that when I blow it up on a big monitor I expect it to be just as sharp on a big screen as it was on a small screen!

i agree. those pics you posted dont look that bad. that's the problem with the htc one camera (i own one) when you increase the resolution of the pic, the quality suffers due to only being 4mp. the gs4 is 13mp so it wont be as bad when you increase it's resolution (although there will still be some kind of quality drop off).
Just frickin' awesome. After having the Note this "cheap" plastic feels luxurious
Got mine today. Coming from an LG Optimus G. Here's a few thoughts.
1. I really like the keyboard. But since I've been a swiftkey user for a long time that's no surprise.
2. Screen is very good. Wish it was a little brighter when using auto brightness, but it is very good nonetheless.
3. Maybe I'm just not that picky, but I don't notice any lag. At least not anything bad enough to complain about.
4. Seems to charge pretty fast with the included 2 amp charger.
5. It might be plastic, but I can tell you I like the light weight and the feel in my hand better than my LG Optimus G...
6. I thought the 'swapped' menu and back buttons would bother me. But to be honest, I kind of like it better...

I have a few questions,
1. Does the speaker have 'stereo sound' like the HTC one? Can you hear the base? What about hooking up to the headphone? Does it sound better than S3?
2. Anyone here uses Allshare cast? I have a Samsung LED Smart TV that I stream movies directly from my phone to the TV with a touch of a button on the S3. It does have occasional lags, however. Does the S4 do the same?
3. Does the S4 have the same amount of ringtones like the S3?

I actually really like the button setup. When I got my first smartphone like three years ago, it was a Blackberry, and it had a similar button arrangement. It went [PHONE][MENU][HOME/SELECT][BACK][END CALL]. My current Galaxy S2 is [MENU][HOME][BACK][SEARCH]. So the S4 will be the same as I am used to, and I will appreciate not having to get used to a new setup.
two issues.
1)wifi keeps on disconnecting... very annoying
i have another device on the same wifi, but it's not disconnecting at all.
2) RAM. even if i clear everything, i'm at 1.2GB ish.. i always notice the homescreen widgets refreshing themselves due to low RAM.
anyone else?
everything else is fine.
speedy, beautiful screen, good speaker, very nice camera, etc.
Speaker is very good; coming from S2
Bloat... Blah
