Are you running stock ROM and kernel?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

Might sound strange but after uninstalling Easy Tether on my PC mine stopped working. I left my drivers on the PC, everything was working but wireless tethering. I reinstalled the program only in my PC and was fine after I reconfigured my network adapters on my PC. I think the connection between USB when the program turns on might help you get it enabled. Good luck.

I've been going back and forth with different roms including stock and it's the same results with all of them, even 3rd party wifi tether programs won't work.

What exactly are you're settings in the settings wireless screen? I had more trouble with this phone and wireless tethering that I've never gain the past.

I am having a similar issue. My G2x will connect wirelessly via tether to my ipad 2 (it takes a few refreshes in safari before it works though), but when i try to connect it to my laptop (windows 7) it connects but will not give internet access...i get that shield as well.
I have the tethering option as part of my tmobile account.
Has anyone figured this out yet?

Yea I have windows 7 also and I don't have the tethering plan but tethering works with my friend's ipad and I keep reading that the plan isn't really necessary.

Yeah, I am a long time customer with T-mobile so the tethering charges don't affect my bill at all.
Also, I was told that if you don't have the tethering on your account it will eventually disconnect you.
Anyway, I just tested it on my girfriend's netbook and it tethered fine over wireless. I guess its something with my laptop although i have no idea waht it could be. Its a new laptop and I have never had any problems connecting to wireless networks before.

I'm positive about it being our laptops but I need to actually know what to do. I'm pretty sure there is a setting that needs to be configured or something but I am not able to find any information online. I guess I'm gonna try tethering via USB and see if after that my computer will actually connect and get swireless signal

Figured it out, you have to troubleshoot the connection twice, if you only do it once all it will do is disconnect.

Sloooow WiFi download speed!

Holy crap! My wifi download speeds are averaging 800kbps, while my Droid X is getting 8mbps. And yes, I am on wifi. Upload speeds are actually a little faster than the X at 2700kbps versus 2200. What gives?

try menu-settings-wireless & networks-wifi settings-hit menu again to pull up the advanced menu. From there I set my wifi sleep policy to never and there is a toggle the best wifi-performance, which I haven't tried yet because I never needed it. Have you tried that yet?
Wifi calling appears to be the culprit. I rebooted the phone and ran speedtest several times and got download speeds of 12-13mbps but once I enabled Wifi calling the dl speeds dropped to ~800kbps and remained there even after force closing Wifi calling. Confirmed! A second reboot gives me my speeds back.
Yeah same here when I restart it I get the speed back up but again after awhile it slows down big time don't know how to fix it
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I just finished a factory reset and the only app I have installed is speedtest.net. With wifi calling on I cannot reproduce the problem now. I hope the factory reset fixed it but I suspect the problem may be caused by some other app I installed earlier. Google Voice maybe? More investigation...
Nevermind. I installed GV and my download slowed again so then I uninstalled it but the issue was still there. I had just booted up the phone before I was trying this so maybe it just happens over time. Anybody else reproduce this?
Same here, I pretty much can pinpoint the Android market at this point. After freshly restoring my WiFi I get 20k Download/ 5k Upload using speedtest.net app. After visiting the Android market and screwing around in there a bit I get 3k Download/5k Upload every time. Tried with multiple apps it seems to be the market that causes this every time for some reason.
I don't know about the market being the cause. I cycled the wifi off then on again and now my speeds are back. I even opened the Market again once I read your post but my speeds aRe still normal. Maybe you have to download an app from the market over wifi. Checking now.
Yeah I don't think its the market I restarted my phone got the speeds back up then went to market speeds were good then after awhile the speed dropped back down as low as 400kbs compared to the 4 or 5 mbs I got after restarting.

I think I figured it out. I have been playing with my phone for about an hour and a half and I could not get it to slow down until... I plugged it in to charge. I ran a test right after I plugged it in and sure enough it was slow. I then cycled wifi and got my speeds back. Can someone else try this to confirm?
Nevermind. That didnt work the second time I tried it.
Bump. Just got a Sensation today and am having the same issue. Anybody figured a workaround or fix yet?

Mine can not hang on to a network for nothing, even after enabling "never sleep" policy. Speeds are random: sometimes it's slow, sometimes it's ok.
It looks like it's been a few months since anyone has posted on this problem. I just got my Sensation and am having the same issue. I also have a My Touch 4G Slide and noticed that it did the same thing. But once I went into the Wifi settings and check the max speed box, it solved that issue right away. I tried it on my Sensation with no luck. I have to disable and enable the Wifi in order to get my speed back up. Anyone have any updates/fixes on this problem? Is this a software or hardware issue?

[Q] A way to tether without the carrier seeing data usage

I heard that if you are running a custom ROM, that if you go into the ROM files and go to systems, app, and find device manager and remove the device manager app, the carrier can't see how much data or how it's being used on your phone. Does anyone know anything about whether or not this is real? If it were that simple I would think some of you Senior Member guys would have figured that out. Hopefully someone knows if it is B.S. or not. Thanks as always.

its easy to get them not to see if you are tethering, just delete tethermanager from /system/app. as for data usage, they provide your data, they can see how much you use whether or not you want to. download the myatt app if you want to monitor to see what they have you down for used data. if you are on an unlimited plan you dont really have to worry about this, only if you want to know when youll be throttled, but thats easy to get around.

Well, if you have a support ROM (I know CM7 supports it, stock doesn't however.) Go to Settings->Wireless and networks->Mobile Networks and look for a section called network mode I think, and you should have the options of WCDMA, GSM, and WCDMA/GSM. You want to click WCDMA. also, you could try setting your APN as wap.cingular and seeing if that works to get rid of throttling. Hope this helps!

wait your complaining about a 2 gig cap but you signed the contract ?
I've gotten the AT&T dreaded text/email twice in total. The first time I was definitely tethering. The second I hadn't tethered since the first time (over a month), so I gave them an earfull about it. I'm still on unlimited and I'm still tethering...
What I do to [hopefully] avoid the hammer coming down is a little more involved than most, but it seems to have worked thus far.
I've created a VPN to my home network (using OpenVPN). I have configured the phone to send all internet traffic over the VPN when connected. Using compression, it's actually pretty quick. I don't really notice any difference in speed, and every packet leaving my device and destined for the internet is encrypted. Let 'em try to sniff that!
This is a little further than most are willing to go, and arguably more than is necessary, but I really like my unlimited data. I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure I get to keep it (short of not stopping my tethering practices - I mean, let's not be stupid!)

That's stupid. How are they going to have our tethering cut into our data consumption, and have us have to activate and pay for it?
Not sure how they think they blocked it, because I'm still using it and it works just fine...lol

That's an odd one, but it sounds like it thinks you're using a tmobile hotspot. You can make the phone broadcast wifi with out an extra app. I would recommend you do that instead. Extra tethering apps are usually for carriers who force people to pay more for tethering.
Edit: I missed the word "to" there. But same idea. And this is a semi-off topic question, but why would you tether TO your kindle?

I'm using the app (Wireless Tether) because wifi tethering is not working on AOKP and I need it because my internet is off so I don't have wifi at home to get internet on the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire is Wifi only. I also need wifi at work.

Got it. Thanks for clearing it up. Just keep an eye on your bill, carriers *love* to secretly bill you for stuff because they think you're doing something you're not.
Keep us informed. I tether my Galaxy Tab Plus all day, every day that I am at work. I use the native CM7 over bluetooth tethering app. Works great and I would really be unhappy if I were to not be able to use this function.
I'll let you know if anything happens in my bill. I hope not. If so, then works about to get real boring..lol
Well, I'm an idiot! I went to tether again today and pulled up the browser and it went to a page saying tethering was blocked. I then remembered I had Dolphin Browser HD user agent set to "Ipad"." I changed it back to "Android" and its all good now. I feel stupid now...lol

I do too, and this was the first time I hit the cap.
does that mean that those of us that tether need to worry about it getting shut off, it looks like they think it is shut off but its not, right? so as long as we are running a custom rom we will be OK?
You should be careful, they can add the tethering plan without your permission, just for using that function alot, amlnd that is an extra charge on your phone bill.

Sry if this topic was covered already-but I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to use my Xbox on a free hotspot. I've read foxfi is great..but I also learned that downloading a power control widget with the hotspot toggle included that it provides the stock hotspot for free. It worked indeed..though unclear if this is using verizons paid hotspot...didn't warn of any charges or anything. My laptop connected to the stock hotspot though couldn't get internet(tho it's switching between 4g and 3g).

Well if they find out you will get charged but as of now no one is sure whether they can tell or not and no one has come forward saying they got charged. Its a risk you have to take by yourself because no one can give a definitive answer.
If you use the hotspot, you'll be charged for it...warning in advance.they can monitor it.

So if I use Xbox via firefi they still be able to tell? I've read in many other post where they consume an absurd amount of data through such tethering...hmm.
So if they see I'm using firefi, how much would they charge me? I have unlimited data. Thanks for info.

You think with the technology now, they can't monitor our phones, if they wanted to, they can. but it's true you can teather with out a plan but I warn you, be careful, me .I have unlimited data and unlimited hotspot.did you know if you have unlimited data your eligible for the unlimited hotspot which is $30 bucks.(4g phone's only)

I tether to my xbox all the time using foxfi, it says about 13MB of data were used while using it for a fairly long time. It only needs to download vector positions of people and such for Call Of Duty I would think, so not too data intensive at all. I dunno about other games.
thanks for the feedback guys..Will connect my Xbox via foxfi later tonight. So stoked to play some cod after two long months without it lol just hope the data will keep up with the game. Cheers.

I could have sworn, just like vz nav, vzw only charges for the hotspot for the use of its app.
Use vz nav, spend 9.99 a month, or, use google nav for free.
Use vzw hotspot, 30.00 a month or, use foxfi for free.
I've never seen vzw advertise the accrued data usage as the fee for the hotspot- only the use of the app.

On the Droid X running gb, there were three system files that had something to do with data service provider. It was determined that these apks could monitor tethering. They were easily removed. Not sure about today, but it used to be that when tethering, if you weren't redirected to vzw's Page showing pricing for tethering then you were okay. I did notice that the built in hotspot app now requires a subscription to even turn it on.

Nexus 5 Wifi Problem

Hi all
I got my Nexus 5 yesterday and i am having a problem with the wifi. It connects ok to my home router, however when im using it the wifi signal keeps going up and down all the time. I can see the little symbol in the right hand corner going from full wifi bars ro maybe half every 30 seconds or so. Then it will just drop, and come back on itself after a minute or so.
I have updated the router firmware etc and i have both 1st and 2nd gen nexus 7's, a htc sensation and samsung 4 mini all working fine with the wifi with no issues.
My phone is not rooted its as it was out of the box.
Does this sound like a faulty phone?
Thanks all
Chris

I have updated the router firmware etc and i have both 1st and 2nd gen nexus 7's, a htc sensation and samsung 4 mini all working fine with the wifi with no issues.
My phone is not rooted its as it was out of the box.
Does this sound like a faulty phone?
Thanks all
Chris

Does that happen even if the phone is right next the router?

My nexus works fine..however i have had issues with a previous device
in my router settings i had to ensure that Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) was enabled
apparently without this enabled my router could not assign an ip address to my Phone.

I ALWAYS drop connection to wifi when close by my router. I've tries both bands and nothing. Considering a device swap to test.

Go to your WiFi Advanced settings and make sure your Region Code is set to your region.

I can't find that setting?
Go to WiFi settings then click the three dot menu. There you will see "Advanced".
