Keep Flashing Rom/Kernel Will Spoilt my Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a question.
Will flashing my Nexus with different ROM/Kernels for many times spoilt my phone?
I worry about it. My friend told me hard reset will reduce the life of ur phone.
Anyone can give some comment about it?
Thank you

Hard reset surely wont harm your phone.
Its known that the eeprom chips have a number of times that they can be flashed, but i am sure this is way over the times an average user can flash it - even if you are flashing 3-4 times a day -.

Fully bricked Captivate? Please, help! Tried many things..

Hi everyone,
Here's my problem :
Since some few days, my Captivate won't start up, and won't connect anymore.
The screen stays black!
I tried usually things : removing battery, sim, microsd, then pressing vol up, down and power, connecting with ODIN3.. Nothing happends.
It was bricked after a custom ROM update. I did format data, cache and .. system ! As usually, because I tought formatting system was necessary. Maybe it was the wrong thing that made it crashes..
So, I thank you a lot for bringing me any help !!

could you give pls a little detail. as to what custom rom did you flashed, is it the froyo rom or ginger rom? and elaborate further on what did you do when this happens it might give other people here some more understanding on how to help you. If your your phone won't power at all and the soft bottons won't light up and won't respond with key combos or even a jig you likely had a perma brick as in hard brick.!!......If you are still on warranty no worries just tell them that your phone suddenly dies and that you have no clue what happens to it.
You can also try this if you like read the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020976&page=3
Thanks for your answer!
I flash many of my phones, so, unfortunately, I can't remember what kind of ROM it was! I also try many of those I can find on XDA.
Here's what happens :
Had formatted data, cache, and system. Then, flashed the ROM, and selected "reboot". Just after that, I was making coffee.. So, I came back 5 min after, and the phone was .. dead!
After many, many, many Captivate's ROM flashes (maybe 70 !?), first time it happends!
The phone is no more under warranty, so I can't do anything..
Btw, what is a "jig" ? Heard alot that word but..
And thanks for the thread, but I don't think there's a solution in it!?
I will browse it tomorrow, thanks
Thanks again for help!
JIG youtube video

Here ya go....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
The jig is usually the last resort for some. That is if holding volume up and volume down then plugging in the usb cable into your phone ( the other end being already plugged into your computer) does not put it into download mode.

U can either buy a jig from someone like mobiletechvideos on YouTube or make one urself using resistors (tutorials are scattered around the forum). U plug it into ur micro USB slot and it will put ur phone onto download mode. This works if ur phone is soft bricked and it may not work for u but definitely worth a try

Sounds like you flashed a single bootloader and hard bricked your phone. Either jtag it or buy a new one...
JIG2WIN4LIFE if you can still turn on your phone without a perma black screen anyways
Hi,
I took a look over "JIG" on eBay, and found it for approx. 8 $.
But it says it can be used for ALL cases, at the exception if the screen stays black ! And that's my case..
So, do I have to buy it anyway, or is it really dead?
I don't want to buy another one!
Thank you.
sometimes the jig works, if you take out battery, DO NOT TOUCH ANY BUTTONS, put in jig. worked for me.
BUT your phone is under 1 year old. it has a warranty. if it happens to get broken in a way that they cant tell, and can never read the phone again... you get a [email protected]!!!
think speaker magnet or
2 seconds in the microwave 1 or 2 times MAX.. dont want phisical dammage! and there is plenty of electronic parts to get messed up very easy this way

Wow, nuking it will cover your tracks if they try to access anything on it?
if it is electrically damaged and wont work, they cant access it, and they cant see your tracks...
and my buddy nuked a phone before, to destroy it for fun, there were sparks immediatly. if that happens the phone aint going to work anymore. so do it in very short bursts. you do not want any physical damage.
or wave it in-front of a LARGE magnet to degause it until it doesnt boot anymore.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but my phone is no more under warranty..
There was no warranty when I bought it from USA (on eBay), and I'm living in Belgium! So, no way
I will have to try the JIG then.. I suppose it's my last chance
yup jig is your last chance..
now the other day i bricked and the jig wouldnt work either unitl I found a trick that helped my jig work. this worked FOR ME in my situation. not all.
remove battery count to 5 and replace battery
DO NOT TOUCH ANY BUTTONS
put in jig. download mode!!!!
if i touched ANY button the jig would not work. worth a shot.
jigs are about 8$ on ebay or can be made with a few resistors for a couple dollars. (or whatever currency you have in Belgium). there are many threads on how to make them in the captivate forums on xda here. just make sure not to touch the resistors with your fingers if you make one. use tape to hold it.!! good luck buddy!
Thanks a lot!
I will buy a JIG on eBay then.. It would be safer!
We are using Euro currency in Belgium . So, a JIG is approximately 6 €.
It's a cheap price for this kind of tool! But by the way, HTC has much more solutions to unbrick their devices..

Phone keeps randomly powering off!

Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...360GB360&q=htc+desire+hd+randomly+turning+off
Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

Cheers Ben! Love how your always here to help!
I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.
Don't know how hot it gets in cars in Florida....but I know that it can kill pets let alone phones!
Cheers, not worried about my phone, just trying to relate that's all
You're just going to be have to forcefull in your email and exaggerate...even

Yeh thanks I think it must be the heat that damaged the phone; it was working perfectly before for the last 3weeks!
My phone is just a month old now
Hopefully they just send me a new phone
I tried to act pleading in the email, but I did not mention anythig about leavig it in heat or the car. I just said it keeps crashing on me...
Hopefully I get a reply soon tommorow!

Though my phone was not left anywhere where temp was extreme, mine is also doing this since this week,, Also a few months old and I blame the apps installed . I ahd battery monitor and suspected just that prog..
I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Yeh, some of them have the same problem after a couple if weeks old (not exposed to heat or anything) what causes this problem?
How often do u have this problem??
My old Nokia 5230 has the same problem
Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.
Btw its android 2.3.3 build 1.47.401.4

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?
2) Has a new application been recently downloaded:?
3) Please can you turn off all applications and UN-install any which are unessential, As they may be causing issues:?
4) What have you already done/tried to troubleshoot your issue/s:?
5) When did your issue/s occur or re occur:?
6) Is you device or applications fully up to date:?
Should the above fail to restore your device to full working order, the device (MAY) need to be sent for repair.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
If this response has resolved your query, and you have no further questions please close this ticket by following the link below. Upon closure of the ticket you will be invited to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey which should take no more than 1 minute to complete.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

And today i can confirm the problem has occured 8 times today. Now it can do the problem up to 3 times in a row, when the device is in use.
It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully
So what's your uptime since you changed??

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!

[Q] Nexus S bricked. Now what?

Hi,
I wanted to update my Nexus S from SlimBean 4.2.1 1.0 to 1.1 this morning.
I didn't do a full wipe which basically ruined my OS so I wanted to back it all up, full wipe and start all over again.
I had big problems with backing up as Titanium Backup either crashed or was stuck at it's initializing SQLite stage.
The phone process and System UI were crashing all the time if that matters.
So I tried to back it up through CWM which first failed while backing up the data partition, but it worked the second time.
I turned the phone off and since then it's not doing anything anymore.
Won't turn on, doesn't show the charging animation when plugging it in.
I tried to recover it several times.
It doesn't show up in Windows' Device Manager and UnBrickableRessurrectorR40 doesn't see it.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks a lot.
land.apfel
why don't you try to get it to download mode and flash via odin ?
I would do it that way if it was possible. The Nexus won't do anything. Neither fastboot, nor Download nor recovery nor anything else.
The only thing it does is getting hot when being connected to AC.
But I'll try to do the UnbrickableMod and see if it helps.

Did you make the hardware modification? I have to do it with mine to be recognized.

hardware modification is so difficult so as to be impossible for most people. it seems to be the only solution though. i only just bought my nexus s (for $150) second hand .. flashed cwm 10 on it and it bricked a few days later when i swapped a battery. i have disassembled the phone but the modification required needs minute tools and expertise beyond my ability. any suggestions? sending it in to experts in the USA will cost me nearly $100 and I'm afraid the diagnosis might mean I will lose that as well.
Without the hardware modification you can trash your Nexus S right now, as the chance that you recover it for some reason is probably 0.01%.
For doing the hardware modification you really need to know what you're doing. If you don't, look out for someone you know and who would do it for you.
After you did the UnbrickableMod, the chance that you can recover your phone is about 60% (maybe).
If you can't recover the phone, you need to exchange the eMMC chip as well.
I found eMMC chips in China for $19, but you still need to assemble it.
This is where I'm stuck at the moment.
my phone is in same condition please someone solve this and share with us
If you haven't already applied the UnBrickableMod you should try that first.
If you have, I have no idea what to do.

frequent reboot after few min of use

Hi all
I have an annoying issue just started to happen yesterday
I have BKL09 Version with latest stock EMUI 9.1 AND patches
Suddenly the device is rebooting randomly just after 3 to 5 min of use ..it may reboot now while I'm writing this !
I have tried to uninstall the last 5 apps or so that may have contributed into this but no luck
I can also try to do factory reset but it's a pain as I have lots of apps and data to backup
Just wondering if anyone has faced the same situation or what else I can look for before factory reset ?
Thank you
Reboots If not under use?
Reboots If battery full or empty or both?
Before reboots IT shows Something on the screen?
Hopefully is a software problem. Try to backup your data an reset everything. If that didnt work, hopefully is the battery.
The worst case the problem may be some chip on the motherboard(cpu, memory, some electronic) that has aged or water damage or purely bad luck.
I had a Nexus 5X with the well know "soldering problems" that did the dame thing; sudden reboots.

Thank you for the response
It reboots randomly while in use and not in use
When it reboots , battery is always have juice never empty or low charged
It's just hang for few seconds then reboot itself
I have tried wipping the cash partition as advised by support when I called them over the phone but it didn't help
Next I'm going to monitor for few days then try a factory reset
But if it's battery ..how can I get it replaced ?

If You opened a phone before, battery in this model is prety simple to be replaced. You should be carefull with batteries as they might be dangerous. If You never did IT, You should find a service that can do that for You.
A replacement battery is 15$ dollars in my country and the service should be around another 15-20$ as it's not so hard to replace IT. This phone s are not glued - You can check IT on YouTube.
i also have the same issue from mid march and it has progressively worsened only. did you find any solution

Bootloops

My Pixel 3 randomly restarts and gets stuck in long bootloops. The frequency is completely random, ranging from three times a day (rarely) to once a week or two (more common). There is no trigger, sometimes I have it in my hand, doing stuff, and it does that, sometimes it does it when it's sleeping.
The bootloop is always the same.
I see the bootloader message, then th Google logo, and the phone restars after about one second. I never counted to loops but sometimes it must be tens of them. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop them, or at least I am not awaer of any key combinations.
I presume the phone eventually boots into safe mode or something.
I've had it for several months, bought it used in good condition off Ebay, and other than this I never noticed anything off.
This is extremely frustrating and I have no idea what to do.
Does anyone have any idea?
I really hope it never been inside water. Try updating your OS, or change to Custom ROM. If it still occurs, then that's a big problem.
It's most probably an app that's causing this, try disabling/uninstalling some apps that you don't need.
Booting into safe mode is also an option, that way you can make sure if an app is actually causing this.
I factory reset and later on completely reflashed the phone at one point in not too distant past and it didn't help one bit.
It's also completely untroubleshootable given how randomly the problem occurs, which also makes me sceptical about an app doing this
I'm inclined to think it could be a hardware problem.

It's highly unlikely for it to be hardware problem, unless you have water/dust/humid damage.
Or maybe your phone heats really fast and therefore some pin inside the motherboard gets shortened due to the heat. But what are the chances of this happening?
But just to be sure, what happens when you connect your device to a charger with output more than 2 amp?
Did you modify your device in anyway whatsoever? Anything the previous owner noted about the device?
I didn't nodify it at all.
This is the charger I use https://www.alzashop.com/vention-dual-quick-30-usb-a-wall-charger-18w-18w-white-d6323711.htm

Yeah, just flash some different ROM on your device and we're good.
Make sure you backup everything through TWRP and that you're flashing your device specific ROM.
As a test you mean? I am used to the stock ROM and last time I checked, there was no stable Android 11 (I think) ROM I would use.

Was the last time you checked a year ago?? A11 has been out for a good while now. Here: Stock A11 ROM (Blueline).
And not as a test, no, flash it and keep using it. You can also flash custom ROM if that's your thing.

But I said I flashed the stock ROM before with no luck. You're suggesting I do the same again. That makes very little sense.
What about the Google camera and LOS btw?
