Could anyone please clarify when I synchronize with my google account which one of these two things happen?
A. The details of my contacts on the phone are written on the server and old entries which I deleted on the phone are deleted from the server
B. The details of the contacts from the server are written on the phone and if I deleted something from the phone and it is still present on the server, it will be written on the phone again.
I am finding myself that sometimes one or the other happens.
Is there a way to fix the direction of the syncronization? e.g. always phone to server or vice versa.
Thanks a lot
i think the synchronisation between the server and your device is based on which has the newest contact information. also sometimes a server does a backup for a certain time if you delete a contact just in case if you want to have this one again.
It's a good question. I would hope, as mentioned above, that it would take the most recent change as the one to store.

Hello,
My Outlook Mobile Account Info has been corruptet in some way.
The email accounts, sms shows fine, is not visable when starting Messaging.
When I search with PIM manager the accounts are there and when I try reinstalling SEVEN it tells me I have reached the limit of number off accounts.
I am trying to locate the files where the account info is stored and associated emails to delete these and start over again.
Can anyone help with file name and location or if there is a tool available.
I found mailaccountrepair posted on xda but it didn't work. What I really think is the best way is youst to find the files and delete them.
Many thanks,
Hakan, Linkoping, Sweden
Hi. Do you happen to have WM6.1? It seems there is a known problem & Microsoft released a patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958639/en-us
"This behavior occurs because the e-mail account details are corrupted when the Windows Mobile 6.1-based device does not connect to the SMTP server."
Otherwise your best bet might be to backup what you can & do hard reset which should fix the problem but unfortunately you'll need to restore all your settings/stuff which shouldn't be too bad using activesync or a backup/restore tool like PPCPimBackup (both of which I've done numerous times from muckin up my phone so bad it wouldn't work or simply migrating to a new phone.)
If you are set on trying to recover what you got now, I think some email stuff is stored under:
My Device\windows\Messaging (I think text files of your messages & attachments)
MD\Application Data\Volatile (?)
MD\MAPI (empty on mine)
Sorry I can't say for sure what all is where & exact purpose but maybe it will head you in the right direction. I recall coming across registry entries for Messaging & MAPI too but it has been awhile. Yell if you want me to dig out my registry editor & look but again hopefully I got you started.
Hope that helps.
Bill
Thanks a million.
I ended up restoring from a fairly recent backup however I am a bit worried for it to happen again.
I am not sure if my problem was because of the known issue you mention. When researching it I also found that the patch wasn't very stable:
http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook_mobile/archive/2008/11/12/wm-6-1-smtp-fix-released.aspx
Anyway, a restore solved the problem for now!
Happy hollidays, Hakan
hope this is in the right place here...
so, this weekend i finally managed to sync my contacts list into oblivion. thank you very much, activesync.
what i did is, i reinstalled my desktop system, which i do more or less regularly to keep it lean. some time ago i bought outlook 2007, specifically to have a backup in case i lost my phone (touch hd) or something. now after i had setup the new installation of win7 rc and wanted to sync, it wouldn't. apparently, the last activesync partnership was in the way. so, what else to do, but end the former partnership (and please do tell me, if i'm wrong here!). i was greeted with a warning telling me "if i continue, all data synced FROM that partner source" (don't know the exact text, i interpreted this from the German text) will be deleted. i didn't see any alternative (like telling stupid activesync to keep them, just end the partnership, again please tell me when there is such an option somewhere), thought "OK, the original source for the contacts was the phone, not outlook" and continued. afterwards, my contact list was empty except for 10 contacts that wouldn't sync in the first place.
question 1 is: why the heck do they have to make these sync solutions so reliant on automatisms and eager to simply delete stuff? and then not include, or hide really good, options to prevent this? mobile center only allows to set who has priority to overwrite in case of conflict, activesync on WinMo has even less options. why can't they make them ask what exactly to do when they find discrepancies or conflicts, preferrably for each single case? frankly, i find this whole automatism business (in general, not only activesync) patronizing and dangerous if you don't pay close attention. i was wary, and still managed to delete my contacts. great!
i know, this is a rhetorical question, but i had to let off some steam...
now for more immidiate things:
is there a way to prevent this from happening via obscure options? i know i should have used something like pimbackup or at least made a copy of the pim.vol (which has its own difficulties), but you're always wiser afterwards.
speaking of the pim.vol file, is there a way to read that out by now? apparently the deleted contacts are still in there between a gazillion lines of symbols and i already rescued some, but this will take ages skimming through with a text-editor. i know someone wrote a perl script to parse the file, but that's beyond my competence.
and lastly, about those 10 contacts that were spared. those simply refused to sync towards desktop outlook. after each sync, i just got a message telling me he couldn't sync those. any ideas why, or what might be going on there? all of them have pictures, one or two phone numbers, and some have birthdays, nothing else. i think all or most of them had the pictures attributed from the album while zooming in, but i think so had others. some of the original photos are still there, some have been deleted by now, so i guess that's not the reason either.
any help would be much appreciated!
cheers,
mo
a good practice is to backup outlook on the pc
export to pst file include everything
What is the best way for me to go through and organize my contacts for my Google account?
My list is so sloppy and looks bad with duplicates, some several duplicates. I know sometimes in the past I would attempt it just with manually deleting and checking all names/numbers and I would often get some sort of message saying I couldn't delete this contact for some reason(I forgot what the reason it said was).
I would prefer to edit this list on my PC, but if this easier done with some sort of app then I'm down. I also want my new organized list to sync across all my devices that sync contacts from my google account.

On the website (https://contacts.google.com) you can identify duplicates.
You can also export your contacts on your PC (CSV or vCard format).
And you can pretty simply merge duplicates so that if, for example, one has a landline number, a second has a mobile, a third has an address, etc., you can put them all in a single entry with a mouse click.
I was in your position a few months ago and it took me about half an hour to whip my contacts list into shape.
I exclusively use contacts from my gmail/Google account. I never ever have them on the phone or the sim. In case I lose or break or change the phone, I never lose a contact and never have to re-enter them. I'm very OCD about things like that and being able to sit at my PC and standardize all contacts is worth a ton to me. Using the above cited Google contacts link is my preferred method.
Rogers s8+
Latest software build info attached. No roms or root etc.
Completely stock except for Nova launcher.
I have approx 980 contacts on phone, google only has 928 on contacts.google.com for account#1
Issue.
Contacts will not sync, last successful sync was in May.
Troubleshooting, various steps
Rebooted many times.
Toggled sync on and off.
Left off for weeks.
Exported contacts from primary account#1, imported to second account#2 on device that had handful of contacts and synced successfully. Now fully imported account#2 doesn't sync. Toggle on off. Nothing hung.
Seems there is a corrupted contact causing this, I've tried the Google forums but they suggested to remove account and readd.. Except that will lose all my contacts on the device and there's no way I know to check the export file for consistency. So I can't risk losing a bunch of contacts.
Not sure what to do other than manually verify which of the 980 contacts aren't synced and add them online...

Sorry can you explain what you mean? I normally use a Mac but can find a windows pc if needed. Are you saying use Samsung desktop app to sync? Sorry.. Confused.
On a PC or Mac go to google.com and in upper right corner of the page you have Google apps. Search for contacts .

I've been to contacts.google.com it tells me I have less contacts than on my phone.. Not sure what you're suggesting.
I added a contact on contacts.google.com and it synced downward btw. I also added one on my phone and it's synced up. But there's still a difference in number of contacts. Weird.
Download "contacts sync fix" in the play store. I had the same issue and it worked for me. Make sure you export the contacts as a backup in case something goes wrong.
contacts sync fix by Nikolay R might help
I have the same issue since over one year on one phone.
First easy solution to check, your free space. Yes, I am serious. Below 450MB of free disk space on my FLASH, Android completely refuses to sync. Typically, my email application was saying me "network error"; remove a few pictures, and "network works again". If you have multiple sync issues, this is the first thing to check.
If only contacts refuse to sync, I am also facing this. And in my case, "contacts sync fix" did not help. I did not have time to dig the issue, but in short, I suspect two things:
- the picture may be the root cause
- the Note field may be too long for some contacts
... a part of an error message may comeout in logcat, with the name of the contact causing the error. Note that if only a few contacts trigger an error, all other contacts will be sync; and inside a problematic contact, some fields will be sync.
IE: if contact C triggers the problem, and I add a phone number on one side, then, the new phone number will be propagated, even if the picture, or NOTES are not.
It's critical for me, because I have vital things in NOTES, but, most of the contact details are sync fine.
For me, ATM, I have 6 contacts out of 550 which come out in logcat.
I did not had time yet to dig; things I will try are:
- remove picture on both sides (computer and phone)
- remove any french special char from NOTES, because I could face an ISO-UTF conversion issue.
What I know for sure is that all 6 errors happen on contact I use very often, for people close to me, who have pictures and notes (no I did not attribute a picture to all my 550 contacts; and don't need to write note about everyone I know; only people I see most often have these fields populated)
After 4h of digging ... logcat gave me the number of the contact that were not sync (sort of; it gave me contact ID that I converted into names using sqlite). For those contacts, I have removed all fields except name and picture, and now, my sync is fine.
The problem is not a french letter or UTF; the solution was to REMOVE all fields, so that if there used to be an edition conflict, the conflict is solved by "remove".
After re-creating contacts, I have found that for a given contact number, it may be impossible to propagate the name between Android 4 and Android 7 (through Gmail). If I change the name, then the number, and sync everything, only the number is propagated. When number is edited on a phone, the name shown by gmail is the name shown in the last phone that edited the number. IE, a contact may change name only by changing the number. If number 123456 has name Ab on android 4, and Ac on android 7, the name can be switched on Gmail, by editing the number on one phone or an other. Edition conflicts on numbers are solved by using the last change; but conflicts on names are never solved.
If then I edit name on Gmail, both phones are unable to use the new name. Android 7 is not better than 4.
This issue will not produce any error in logcat.
Hi,
I am looking for a simple way to manage the contacts on my Lineage 15 (Oreo) phone. Adding contacts is easy enough, but when I want to delete something, the mess starts. Trying to delete via the stock contacts app gets me messages of read-only entries and hide-only options. This sucks. I've read about people having to log in somewhere online to try and take control again of their run-away contact data. Seriously? I don't even have a gmail account, and my phone doesn't run any Google apps either. Still, it seems like I am not allowed to treat local data in a local manner.
I guess what I'm looking for is a way to delete a single contact in a single step. I don't want to have to delete three or four times, regular contacts, Whatsapp, Telegram etc. - if I entered it in one step, I want to delete it in one step. Isn't there an app for this? Or alternatively, is there an alternative contact app that I can use instead of the stock contact app and that will give me actual control over MY contacts on MY phone?
Thanks!
