i'm working on that now. says its rooting but dont do nothing. rebooted a couple times and still no go
It only works if you have downgraded your ROM to the DHD rom first.
Ok will see what transpires with this thing. Hopefully things move along like the captivate forums.

Please check /cache and copy all files from it before rebooting to install.
That way, we can get a copy.
For more advanced users, please run a logcat during download process, so that we can try and get a URL to download it manually.
Thanks!
no prob I was just saying in another thread that i am new to the forums and a verizon wireless employee. I was just about to post a thread letting all the devs know that i have access to info a few days (sometimes...you guys are good) before the general public. I also have a thunderbolt that im not afraid to brick trying new things (giunea pig) because i can get it replaced being an employee.

I'm assuming that if you're rooted you shouldn't touch any updates until they've been modified by the devs?

Honestly I am noobish myself but from what I understand if you CAN get the update, it may unroot your device but you just have to do the last few steps of the rooting process over to gain root again. If you are using a custom ROM you may have to manually push the update to the phone.
Again this is not absolute but this is what I believe to be true. If I am mistaken please correct me. This is why I think the OP wants to be able to download it from a website...and also to tear it down for any new goodies

There's been some talk that they'll force-push the update. Dunno the veracity of that. I'm thinking about returning to stock beforehand.
What can we do to stop the OTA?

If that's the case, there must be a way to block or prevent this. Would any devs care to add their valuable input?
Would switching to an AOSP make any difference?
The release date is 05/03/2011. That means, we have ample time to get a plan in place. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would hate to re-root their phone.
Is it possible for them to lock the bootloader with this OTA?

I would say switching to aosp would prevent it as it prevented the updating of the prl.
No. In motorola phones they are locked by hardware. If you were to install a new kernel it trips a component that basically bricks your phone and to disable the trip you would need to crack military grade encryption. We are okay.

I already put in a different thread that verizon has announced that the ota is scheduled for release 5/3. I have noticed in the past that software updates have been released earlier than scheduled release dates (e.g. froyo update for fascinate was available 7pm the night before)

According to this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027706) in the development forum, CM7 is listed under "AOSP Based." As for senseless ROM's, I think it depends on the specific ROM in question, as some are and some aren't (but I could be wrong).

I might have just saw the update. I saw something out of the corner of my eye in the notification bar but when I turned my head nothing. I then rebooted my phone and I saw something else out of the corner of my eye (I have really good peripheral vision). There is a small chance it was the clock changing times (yes my vision is that good). I will let everyone know if the phone feels faster and more updated to know for sure.

Typically any Official update will break #SU access and sometimes cause a serious headache in the process.
If you are rooted, do not apply the update. Just wait for a kitchen baked variant to be released.

The ones in the radio thread stickied in the development section are ok to flash. They are setup properly for root. Bluetooth definitely got some attention in this update. Much more stable connection than before, not perfect, but much better and livable.

maybe fixes visual voicemail bug?
For about 6 weeks I've been having issues with the stock visual voicemail app force-closing every time I tried to use it. I tried going into the app's settings area and clearing its data, then re-enabling it in the caller app, all to no avail.
I just installed this update and it looks like my VVM is working again, so I'm hoping this was indeed a known issue and was fixed.
(FTR, I'm not sure that a factory reset before the update wouldn't have fixed the problem, but I didn't feel like re-installing all my apps so I let it go and just used the old-school voicemail number for a while.)
Is there anyway possible for me to get the update because i had s-off and then i wanted to unroot but i used gfree so i had to use gfree and ran into a crap load of problems leaving me right now with s-off and no root permissions . i need to get a new mytouch because this one randomly restarts and i cant send in one with s-off... can anyone help me out?

Is there anything in this radio other than a new radio and new hboot?
I'm s-off via engineering bootloader, NOT gfree. Is it worth the trouble to use gfree so I can ruu and stay s-off, accept the update, then flash clockworkmod recovery via bootloader, then go back to cm7?
That's exactly what I did with the sensation.

I'm trying to update my HOX and for some reason it won't happen. My phone downloads the latest OTA (4.0.4?), the phone restarts, goes to the install screen, the progress bar gets a quarter of the way, then a phone with a red triangle pops up. I have no idea what's happening. The phone will eventually restart again, and a pop up will show up and say, "update unsuccessful, please try again later."
Can someone please shed some knowledge. I'm pretty sure this phone isn't rooted or anything. Android is pretty new to me, coming from iOS after 5 years.
It's helping you from making a mistake.
If you accept the ota, then it's lights out for you if you want to unlock or root. Search a little bit, there's a thread with a pre-rooted 2.20 update on here. I'd recommend that. Good luck!
PS: My phone did the same exact thing. I was rooted, which I undid temporarily using Voodoo Rootkeeper, and also I had uninstalled some system bloatware using Titanium Backup. That was enough to cause the ota to fail. Thankfully.

Not sure what the problem is but if your dead set on taking the update and losing the ability to root or unlock in the near future the ruu is availible in the dev section or you can download it direct from HTC dev. I would highly recommend you do a little more reading before taking the plunge

Hold your tongue before the angry mob of pitchfork-weilding purists descend on you for not wanting to root! LOL
If you're new, I guess it makes sense, but there is a lot you can do with root, pretty basic stuff, that you can't without it. Like fixing the linkify issue and unlock the tethering app, and the built in tools like flashlight and the FM tuner.
So let the ota fail all it wants while you do some homework. Then call the shot. Good luck.

i would root the phone just to remove the bloatware, AT&T installs alot of it and some your can uninstall with titanium backup some youll want to freeze to make sure it doesnt F your system up. so much crap installed out of the box. Cleanrom is good, and i have used the prerooted 2.20 update as well both are good, im currently back to cleanrom, runs stable and i dont have to go crazy freezing and removing bloat

Rooting is growing on me. Pretty much like jailbreaking an iDevice?
Anyway, I upgraded my HOX using the computer RUU program from HTC's site. Can the phone still be rooted? I read something about a One-Click Root. Can someone point me in the right direction as I continue gathering knowledge
*edit*
Can the One X be downgraded back to previous firmwares? I'm on 2.20 now, from reading, it doesn't look like there's a root.

No eta most of the work on any root exploit is usually done behind the scenes more because of the fact that some previous exploits were security holes so not revealing till it is verified as working prevents att or HTC to block or patch it.

Yes it is if you want to remain stock. The new update requires some finesse to root. If you dont care for root then go for it. If you want root, do it now. Just get Ace Advanced Hack Kit and follow the instruction.
She's kind of on the fence about rooting her device, so I want to keep the options open. I guess that as long as the update doesn't stop her from rooting with Ace Hack kit, (I've used it before) or locks the bootloader as happened with Motorola, I can tell her to go ahead.

It's a bigger pain to root with that update. If she's considering rooting and the update isn't a huge deal to her you might want to tell her to stick with what she has until she decides whether to root.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

Welcome! Well, seeing as how tethering is one of the bigger reasons that people root, most ROMs (at least non-Sense ones I've tried) have them. You might want to tell her to aim a little higher.
Try Android Revolution HD. It is basically the update she would have gotten but rooted and can hotspot with no problem.
