So I got a notification that my system has an update, more specifically System Upgrade 1.84.502.11. Is this something we can install on our rooted and rommed phones? and what would the process be? Or do we just have to wait for new ROMs to come out with the update built into it?

By now...all living ROM's have the updates included in one form, fashion or another.

i have been rooted for about a day now with a custom rom. i was wondering will i get OTA update for the custom rom or is there a app where i can manually check for the custom rom update. How does the updates work on custom roms. i know when i got the phone i notice in setting you can go to at&t software update and it checks for you.
Thx
I believe Clockwork has some ability to show the latest builds of certain roms but it requires you to launch it up and check manually. Alternatively, CyanogenMod has a notification feature that you can enable.
The easiest way is to just bookmark the forum thread of the mod you're using and check it periodically.

The at&t software update won't work for custom roms. In fact, I think most dev's disable that feature in their rom cause installing an AT&T ota update over your current setup might screw up the phone.
ROM Manager has a feature that will let you check for ota updates on your favorite custom rom...but thats only if the develepor is using that feature or even aware of it.
Mostly it's just bookmarking or subscribing to your favorite rom threads and check for updates manually.

Yes just use ROM manager, new updates appear there and lets you flash OTA just like an official update when its available.
If the Rom dev has it set up Rom manager will notify you as well. I remember last year I during thanksgiving dinner I had to excuse myself for a few minutes so I could see what goodies myn had been working on for another device I had.
Hello all,
I've read that there is a 2.3.6 update for the AT&T Skyrocket. I don't have this latest update and still have Android version 2.3.5. I also hate the check for update on this phone. Unlike other phones I've had like HTC and on other carriers, I can check for updates anytime I want. Here, I can only check once and it will tell me to check again in 24hrs. WTF???
I keep running it every day but it does not find the OTA update.
My phone is rooted...
Thanks,
--mike
have you read around on the forums? the update was pulled and/or only available to select IMEIs...
there is no OTA update as of this moment. if you want to move to 2.3.6, flash a rom. otherwise, sit tight
I have been searching on the forum and Google but no answer. I had a Sprint Galaxy S3 and it was rooted with custom recovery Clockworkmod. After an update was available I could not install the update, failing with the message "verification failed" when trying to apply the official update file. I couldn't find an answer so I went back to stock recovery.
Now I have a verizon S3 and I would like to back up an image of my phone with clockworkmod but I would like to be able to update, especially with the looming jellybean update coming soon. Did I miss a way to install the updates to the official rom with clockworkmod? Or was it simply not possible.

With most custom Roms...being able to do OTA updates is blocked because it could interfere with the rooted Rom you are running...its more or less a safety feature for that purpose. If you want to get the new Jelly Bean OTA update, you will have to flash your device back to unrooted stock and it should work just fine...as long as ur rooted, you wont be able to, if im not mistaken.
Thats true, and there is the whole bootloader thing! Now that we have all hacked away our bootloaders, the OTA just won't happen. Hopefully an easy relock becomes available for the vzws3 before that update is released, but I wouldn't panic - big red will probably release it to us after everyone else has gotten it and out phones are outdated! In general though, within a week or two of an official large release, the amazing devs on this site will have a downloadable version available for us to manually install.
If you have modded your phone, never try to take a OTA update. At the least you will lose root abilities. At the worst, potential bricking of your device.
Usually before, lol, if not just after a OTA, the devs have working release for our devices.
Take it easy, relax.
I have had my Sprint Galaxy S III on Wicked Sensations for approximately two weeks and must say that I love the ROM, minus the issues with the Kuban Updater -- frustrating because I want to tweak and customized my phone further, which is part of the reason I switched to this ROM. Anyhow, as of today I have been getting, I assume, system update notifications on my phone where it wants me to update to Android 4.3. Question: I am assuming this is not a Wicked update? Next, since it is apparent that it is some kind of stock system update (non-custom ROM update), I should not "update" my phone? Lastly, I thought that system updates and such were not possible on a custom ROM, which leads me to believe that this is some sort of bug with the ROM? Because prior to Wicked Sensations, I primarily used CyanogenMod as my daily driver and on rare occasion a few other ROMs. Any help in this matter would be much appreciated.
Oh, two more things: If this is a stock system update, how can I block it? Second, if I update this what will happen (e.g., will I soft brick my phone or worse)?
Thanks in advance.

Remember that it could be push advertising.
Just make a backup in recovery and try it.
Can't you ask the rom dev?
The ROM developer is having server issues so it is hard to get a hold of him at his site. Anyhow, I will likely give your suggestion a shot, or I may just go back to CyanogenMod or Avatar ROM.

Hey guys I have a random stupid question. My phone is rooted and I have safestrap recovery installed but I haven't messed with it in a while. I have a few roms on it but I for some reason I can't remember I have just been using the stock rom. I've been getting prompted for system update for a long time now but it errors out when I install it (probably because of being rooted). How can I manually install the latest "stock rom". What is the actual name for the stock rom? Right now I'm running 9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US which is android version 4.1.2. Since I haven't messed with it in over a year I would imagine there's quite a few updates to the one I'm running. So basically my question is what is the official name for the stock rom (I keep wanting to call it firmware but I'm pretty sure thats not it) and where can I get the latest and greatest. Thanks!

Yeah, the update is probably failing because of something you did with root access. However, before you decide to update, I would unlock your bootloader. You're still on a system version that can be unlocked. Once you're unlocked, you can FXZ to the newest update, flash an aftermarket recovery, and then flash a SU.zip to gain root.

So if you haven't already done so, you should unlock first. Here's a screenshot showing the current software version. Also included link to the zip.
