Hi all,
I'm kinda in a stage of researching the motorola xoom and almost deciding to get one for myself, but i have a few questions that may help me take my decision firmly.
i'm looking for the motorola xoom with Wi-Fi AND 3G
i was browsing some of the reviews and lots of people are talking about this side tray that encapsulates both the SIM card and the microSD.
for now i know the SD is not supported, but will be, which is ok for me, given that the internal storage is sufficient.
but for the SIM card, one of the reviewers on PhoneArena.com said: "there is an opening for the SIM card slot once it has the 4G LT modem installed, so u can put in your SIM card, but right now its just a place holder, u will have to go to one of Verizon stores once its available to have them install the 4G LT modem"
so does this mean that the current model in the market doesn't support 3G at all! i mean putting in the SIM card will be useless until in install this modem, or is it the case that this modem will ONLY be used for 4G connectivity? and any SIM card will work normally, making phone calls, connecting to internet over 3G network?
I live in the middle east, in Saudi Arabia, and i've seen the motorola xoom in the stores here, but i actually forgot to ask if it is Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + 3G. I guess i will also have to ask about the support to provide this 4G LT modem once its available.
the second question is about the USB port, i've seen on the forum that there is a hack for Honeycomb that will allow using this port as a host, in other words u can connect you flash drive, or USB HDD (of any size) to the Xoom and be able to browse the files and copy in and out. is that correct?
and the last question is what the applications originally come shipped with it?
Your help is much appreciated
If you get the 3G model, it will have 3G on it once you buy it. The modem update is only to take it from 3G to 4G capability. But if you purchase the 3G model, it will have 3G already. And you mention using it as a phone.. the 3G doesn't mean that it will be useful as a phone (not stock at least). It is meant for data. So you can surf the web, etc, if you sign up for a cellular data plan.
Yes, the usb connection can be used for 'USB OTG Host Mode'. Do some searching around and it will explain your options. You need a specific cable for it though.
3g works on the 3g+wifi version.
External SD card works also, if you root and install a custom kernel.
Yes, there is a hack for host mode, that allows cameras and thumb drives to connect. But you will need a micro USB host cable. But if you only want to connect your PC to the Xoom and access internal storage, this works out of the box - stock.
There's a lot of apps loaded from the factory. I'm rooted and deleted a few and added a lot from the Market, so I can't tell you exactly. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Hi,
Possible to use a sim card from a 3g modem in a 3g phone? and then to use voip over it?
Anyone out there doing something like this?
Phone plans here only offer 300mb
3g internet offers 5gig for less $$ then the 300mb for a phone
Cheers!
I dont have any input other than i have wondered the same thing myself. I even wondered about cloning the SIM and using the HTC tytn II mounted in my car a secondary device that has the same number, but i guess that cant be done.
I used the sim from a 3 usb utms modem in my pda without any problems
Hey,
I'm on a T-Mobile HTC Desire Plan. Included with it I have 3GB of internet which I hope soon will replace my actual fixed internet connection.
Instead of tethering all the time, is it possible to clone my simcard buy a USB modem and put it in there?
If so, how would I go about doing it? And I assume I wouldn't be able to use data on the phone when the PC is on?
sure

most usb modems would be sim locked though
Hi all
I saw in a local shops selling Moto Xoom tablet , the workers and the advertisement saying it is a Wi-Fi only,
I went to the store, I played with it for a bit, the model number MZ600 and it has a SIM Card slot but from the software there is no ( Mobile Network Settings ).
as far as i know if any device have a Wi-Fi only then there is no reason to include a SIM slot in it.
so here are the questions.
1- are all moto-Xoom devices comes with SIM slot and they disable the SIM card internally ?
2- Is there any way to make this SIM slot works ?

1) Yes because the Micro SD Card is also located there.
2) No because there's no 3G modem installed and you will never be able to get the 4G modem install.
hya, I bought a xoom via ebay a few months ago. it came from usa. now i don't know if it's only wifi or supports data connection... can you explain me to understand what do i own?
than: I know it's american, but... is there a way to make a gsm card work on my device?
thanks a lot!
If it says Verizon, it's the CDMA version, if it just says Motorola, it's the WiFi version.
it says motorola, s it should be wifi... is it normal it has the simcard slot?

The slot you see is where a sim card would go if you had the internal hardware for a sim card connection. Also that slot is where your micro sdcard is mounted (if you have one).
Okay but...
Okay, I'm kind of curious about the same thing. My WiFi Xoom has an area for a SIM card and a Micro SD card. However, it's a WiFi Xoom because I bought it as that and it says that on the box, but what's with the SIM card?
I understand there may not be the hardware (Modem) for a 3G data connection, but how can I install one or somehow put one?
Thanks!

You don't have a SIM. As far as adding it I don't think someone has added a modem yet but you can search Google.

Yep, on a Wifi device, the sim card slot is a convenient location to store a spare sim card
