Wireless modem SIM in phone? +voip - General Topics

Hi,
Possible to use a sim card from a 3g modem in a 3g phone? and then to use voip over it?
Anyone out there doing something like this?
Phone plans here only offer 300mb
3g internet offers 5gig for less $$ then the 300mb for a phone
Cheers!

I dont have any input other than i have wondered the same thing myself. I even wondered about cloning the SIM and using the HTC tytn II mounted in my car a secondary device that has the same number, but i guess that cant be done.

I used the sim from a 3 usb utms modem in my pda without any problems

Is it possible for a 3G SIM for a USB modem to be locked so it won't work in a phone?

Hi all,
I'm in Spain and there's a mobile data tariff Orange do here called 'Internet Everywhere' that has a 5GB data allowance, but it's for laptops with a USB modem dongle. The normal 3G tariffs for phones only go up to 512MB which is a bit low for what I want.
Now a guy in the Orange shop here said you can't use the SIM for the USB dongle in a normal phone, even just for data (I'm aware it won't work for voice), but I suspect this is BS, but obviously before signing up for an 18 month contract I want to be sure.
Orange offer the same tariff (and dongle) in the UK, and from a bit of Googling around it *seems* people have used the SIM in a regular mobile for data and it's worked, but the posts I found were a bit unclear. I've not managed to find any info about the Spanish version.
So! My question is, does anyone know of any way that Orange could be locking these SIMs so they'll only work in a dongle and not with a regular mobile?
I have a lock-free Touch Pro (you can't get these with a contract here so I paid the full price... ouch).
Thanks!
In israel Orange locks the SIM cards using a specific code for each of the modems so that you can't even moהe them between modems.
I think you should search in the Network section of the forum first.. if you don't find anything.. maybe someone could break it.. tho i'm pretty sure it isn't as simple as it seems.
Thanks for the reply

Can I "Clone" My Simcard?

Hey,
I'm on a T-Mobile HTC Desire Plan. Included with it I have 3GB of internet which I hope soon will replace my actual fixed internet connection.
Instead of tethering all the time, is it possible to clone my simcard buy a USB modem and put it in there?
If so, how would I go about doing it? And I assume I wouldn't be able to use data on the phone when the PC is on?
sure

most usb modems would be sim locked though

[Q] information about motorola xoom

Hi all,
I'm kinda in a stage of researching the motorola xoom and almost deciding to get one for myself, but i have a few questions that may help me take my decision firmly.
i'm looking for the motorola xoom with Wi-Fi AND 3G
i was browsing some of the reviews and lots of people are talking about this side tray that encapsulates both the SIM card and the microSD.
for now i know the SD is not supported, but will be, which is ok for me, given that the internal storage is sufficient.
but for the SIM card, one of the reviewers on PhoneArena.com said: "there is an opening for the SIM card slot once it has the 4G LT modem installed, so u can put in your SIM card, but right now its just a place holder, u will have to go to one of Verizon stores once its available to have them install the 4G LT modem"
so does this mean that the current model in the market doesn't support 3G at all! i mean putting in the SIM card will be useless until in install this modem, or is it the case that this modem will ONLY be used for 4G connectivity? and any SIM card will work normally, making phone calls, connecting to internet over 3G network?
I live in the middle east, in Saudi Arabia, and i've seen the motorola xoom in the stores here, but i actually forgot to ask if it is Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + 3G. I guess i will also have to ask about the support to provide this 4G LT modem once its available.
the second question is about the USB port, i've seen on the forum that there is a hack for Honeycomb that will allow using this port as a host, in other words u can connect you flash drive, or USB HDD (of any size) to the Xoom and be able to browse the files and copy in and out. is that correct?
and the last question is what the applications originally come shipped with it?
Your help is much appreciated
If you get the 3G model, it will have 3G on it once you buy it. The modem update is only to take it from 3G to 4G capability. But if you purchase the 3G model, it will have 3G already. And you mention using it as a phone.. the 3G doesn't mean that it will be useful as a phone (not stock at least). It is meant for data. So you can surf the web, etc, if you sign up for a cellular data plan.
Yes, the usb connection can be used for 'USB OTG Host Mode'. Do some searching around and it will explain your options. You need a specific cable for it though.
3g works on the 3g+wifi version.
External SD card works also, if you root and install a custom kernel.
Yes, there is a hack for host mode, that allows cameras and thumb drives to connect. But you will need a micro USB host cable. But if you only want to connect your PC to the Xoom and access internal storage, this works out of the box - stock.
There's a lot of apps loaded from the factory. I'm rooted and deleted a few and added a lot from the Market, so I can't tell you exactly. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Should I be able to get 3G connection?

Hello, I'm currently in Taiwan and according to this website (http://www.wireless.att.com/travelguide/coverage/coverage_details.jsp?CIDL=158&MNC=CING) Infuse is able to cover all the frequencies. I'm using Chunghwa Telecom -- I took the iphone 4s sim card and put it into my infuse from america. I can only get signals for calls but can't get any data, what's going on? Is there a special settings I need to change?

You'll need to install a phone apk that supports your 3g connection. If you can root your phone and get CWM recovery, flash this package in CWM recovery.:

Be sure to thank qkster for that post!

This might be a little late, but I suspect the problem is with the SIM card... If this was a 3G modem issue, you should at least be able to get 2G data download... I don't understand what you mean by "took the iphone 4s sim card and put it into my infuse..." - iphone uses micro SIM while the infuse uses standard SIM. Can you grab a standard SIM card from someone else's phone with a working data connection?

Dual SIM tethering or DATA from SIM 1 to SIM 2

Hello.
I searched without finding an answer.
I have one SIM plan coming with VOIP application working through DATA and WiFi, this application only works with its own SIM, cannot use another one because it check it.
But when i travel to others country often cannot use WiFi, and DATA roaming is very too expensive compares to buying a local SIM plan.
To those who hold a Dual SIM smartphone, can you use the DATA of one SIM from the other SIM ?
Can you activate WiFi tethering from one SIM then try to connect to it from second SIM ?
About WiFi, i thing it's not possible because cannot transmit and receive at same time.

Hey,
Let me get this clear, what you mean is, you buy a local SIM with a data plan, and then you try to share this DATA with your current sim right?, well, answer is simple, use two phones, and tether your internet from one to another.
Hope this help you.
Stay Cool...
Hello.
Yes you right, great answer, thank you.
