[Q] Recover data from external hard drive - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys, I'm in need of help here.
Recently I decided to convert my Fat32 external hard drive into NTFS(for larger files support) using the "convert "" /FS:NTFS" command. However, during this process something went wrong and the process crashed.
Now I'm unable to access my external hard drive.
I get the error message when I try to open the drive, that my drive is corrupted and unreadable. I am aware that I can format into NTFS or Fat32 to make it work again, however I would really hate to lose the data on it.
So I need a way to either copy that data to a folder on my computer, restore my external hard drive back to normal with no data lost or something in between.

Hi Ryan,
I can't help restore your external hard drive back to normal, but recover your data.I have succeed to recover data from inaccessible hard drive with Tenorshare Data Recovery. You can google search to get it.Hope this helps!Luck!
Best regards!

Alright, got Tenorshare Data Recovery now, however I'm unsure whether to use the FAT or the NTFS.
The hard drive was original FAT, however it was converting to NTFS when it crashed. Which should I choose then?

What do you mean at BOOT time? and it was an external hard disk it had no OS installed on it, I am trying a recovery software right now it is scanning the hard disk now and its taking very long, I have my fingers crossed if it doesn't work I will try Spinrite,
Also does system restore, restore an external hard disk connected to the system? because last time I did a system restore a few months ago I didn't connect my hard disk and it told me that location G:/ couldn't be restored which was my hard disk.
Anyone know?
System restore won't restore anything on a formatted drive.
Hmm, I normally would recommend Recuva as it is free, but it needs the original file system to be present (aka you can't have formatted). I think [email protected] can do it, but it isn't free.
Kk I am trying a program now, its still scanning and in the files found tab I can see my files so I am gonna wait till that program is done hoping it would recover the items,

[Q] Need to recover data after oem unlock

I forgot that after oem unlock all data + sdcard is wiped out. So i had some photos that i need to recover from that device. Is there any thing that i can do to recover them. Any good software alternatives?. I tried testdisk but it couldn't do much , since it couldn't detect partition table type. Currently i am using PC Inspector File Recovery, but lets c what happens. Meanwhile I need some recommendation from the forum?
I don't know if it can help you but take a look at Recuva from Piriform (less than 10 posts, cannot paste a link :'( )
Don't transfer data to the sdcard. Use cwm to mount the sdcard to a computer. Then use a couple of different recovery apps to try and piece your drive back together through the comp.
Its not a thorough wipe so as long as you don't write to the sdcard you should get a decent amount back. This is the most important step. Even booting into android could force writes you don't want.
I am in through CWM
Yeah I am mounting USB via CWM, actually i wanted to copy all the data to the pc and then install CM9 but i saw that there was nothing else remaining
Let see what happens I will be using some recovery software. I will be reporting back if I find something that works better than others

Decrypt SD card after factory reset

Hello guys,
Im annoyed with my sensation, it was shutting down itself in my pocket every 10minutes so I decided to do a factory reset.
But I forgot that my SD card was encrypted, and now it says "Damaged SD card" when I put the card into the phone.
Do someone have the same problem ? or any idea to mount the partition on linux or whatever ?
I've already tried to set the same pin as before to lock/unlock the phone, but I haven't any prompt for password, it wants to format the card ...
Thanks for your help

Hey, that's a really messed up problem.
I doubt you can make the phone read the contents of the SD Card.
However, what you could do is, format it via the computer & then use a recovery software (like Recover My Files) to get back all your important data.

This BLOWS. I just had my phone repaired and they factory reset it.. now I get this error. Man that SUCKS. I have one app (Car Data Manager) that may not be backed up automatically and last backup may be missing some recent data.
Getting same problem...

Accidentally clicked 'FACTORY RESET' in HBOOT

I accidentally hit the FACTORY RESET option in HBOOT, and it seems the phone just rebooted into TWRP without doing anything. However it seems my SDcard is now empty and unformatted. Earlier I had two "Internal SDcard" options in TWRP\Mount but now I just have one, and if I try to click on Mount USB storage, the removable disk appears as an unformatted disk on my PC. Is there any to fix this? Is the SD gone for good or can I recover the data?
Run a Ruu and your phone should be fine again (dont forget to relock your bootloader)
I think your data you wiped is hopelessy gone..

I made a nandroid luckily, but I just realised that the problem is due to the sdcard not actually being able to mount. It says
E:unable to mount '/sdcard'
I'm using TWRP 2.5, maybe I will try with 2.3.1.0.
EDIT: Okay that didn't help. If I run a RUU won't it erase my SD card? I don't want to lose what's on there, is there any way to fix it and be able to mount it again?
Bottom line: I need the data on my SD... is there any way to recover it?

No its gone sorry and no need for ruu just flash stock recovery and factory reset again.
Ten years of data just destroyed within the blink of an eye.
FML.
reformat the sd card and use recovery tools (google for them). most of your stuff will be easily brought back from the dead.

I did. It seems everything on the card was nuked. I tried about ten different recommended apps, none of them could find a single file even with deep searches.

I'm sorry for your loss. Now, not to be a douche, but 10 years? Have you traveled through time with your One S?

It easily could have been downloaded data. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, but always keep a copy of your SD card on your PC, no matter what.

before going through the trouble of an RUU, if you can see the unformatted disk from your computer just try formatting it there into a FAT32 partition like you would any other drive. This has worked for folks successfully. But as for data recovery....
Dang that sucks... was there some sort of confirmation before starting the wipe? I've always been paranoid that I might fat finger it randomly and it just wipes without some kind of second check
Reflash the recovery img from fastboot then boot into recovery, you should be able to mount sd
Zero help to anyone, but I did exactly the same thing myself and had to mount the SD card in recovery and format.
It hurts!!
Well it's official. All my data is forever gone. And no there was no notification, I hit "FACTORY RESET", and it just paused for a second then rebooted into TWRP with my SD instantly destroyed. I tried every possible trick in the book. The problem for me wasn't just getting it to mount and work again, I could have done that in 20 seconds. The problem was to try and get it back WITH all my data, which I failed.
In the end, I made a RAW disk image backup of the sd card partition which for some bizarre reason ended up with a file that was 6 MB in size instead of 10 GB... I knew my data had somehow got nuked. I decided to just reformat it (Quick Format) as FAT32 on the PC, then I ran a host of data recovery programs, even those that were specialised in finding stuff from formatted drives. None of them could even find ONE file. But after format I was able to use it as normal.
I have really no clue how the entire drive was nuked within a fraction of a second, even all the data on it, but it is what it is.
On the bright side, for some reason my phone seems MUCH faster now, especially when installing apps, and the battery seems to last noticeably longer too.

Hmm. Maybe I should do it too lol.
You should automatically upload your photos or files somewhere. Mine upload to Dropbox so if anything bad happens, nothing too bad can go wrong.

It's hard to do recover because normal format recovery might not work but you can try the old ver of Easy Recovery Pro 6.x(I don't know why but the lastest ver seems removed RAW recovery) and use the RAW recovery, it usually could find some stuffs. You can also try out Diskgenius.

[Q] Recover data after factory reset (Moto G 4G)

I had to do a factory reset on my Moto G 4G as it was not working properly. I backed up everything using Helium and all the contacts to storage. I didn't realise that I was actually backing up to internal storage rather than an SD card (not present). After a factory reset, I lost all the backups. I assumed Helium would have backed everything up to the computer it was connected to?
Is there a way to recover what was on the internal storage prior to the factory reset? The phone doesn't appear as separate mass storage drive when connected to the computer. It is just listed as the phone name under My Computer so I cannot seem to run any standard file recovery tools such as Testdisk.
Help!?
No hope?
I'm guessing since no one has replied that there is no hope in recovering the original data?

Hey
U know recovery applications that I used can scan memory that can mount ... (I can't remember exact name)like using Samy or Sony.they shows the drives as a software not a mountable memory.like u put SD card on a memory reader n use that.it can be support by rec app but that one no I think
Try rec app in ur system or find a hack that can mount internal men then go on
Hope this will help you
Might see if this thread will help mounting the storage in ADB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2843152
