hey guys im trying to find someone to create an app, I have no idea how complicated it would be to do it but I am looking for an app simialer to strobox for the iphone. if I was smarter I might be able to understand the code so I could make it myself but I have bought and read several books on how to do it and just dont get it. if anyone wants or can help let me know.
I too have been craving this app since I got an android phone. This is way beyond my experience, but if someone makes it, I'll buy it.
it woldn't be OVERLY complicated...
This would be complicated for me, just because I don't have a clue what the hell it does even after looking at the website.
Not saying I can write it, looks like it would take a good bit of dev time.
Couple of weeks for anything work able.

It is an application for photographers that allows you to create lighting diagrams of strobe and camera placement in a scene for reference.

Well, If you find someone that could tackle the UI, I could work in the rules for you. I just wouldn't have a clue about what rules to use unless I was given them by someone who knows. That's over my head.

UI design or coding? I definitely couldn't do the coding, but the design maybe.
Oh yeah, the Strobox app is under a creative commons license, so the UI could probably be used as longs the the app stays under creative commons. Which, would probably restrict the app from being sold.
yes the dev put it under CC because she wanted to make sure that it was a free app that being said I would be more than happy to "DONATE" to anyone that could do this, and would be more than happy to help with the graphics aspect of it if someone can code it. The code is WAY over my head.
@bernard_photography: its nice to see someone else intrested in this. I have been trying to find a way to get ahold of the dev of strobox since I got my hero. I use speedlights a lot and it was a life saver for repeateability on location.
and the thing about it is that yeah you would have to make it a free app but if you where really looking to get into app dev this could really get your name out there just like it did for the strobox dev. I mean as soon as she released it it was all over ALL of the major photography blogs.
I'm in contact with the dev now to see what I can work out.

Saweet. I hope this comes together. My wife just got an iPod touch and the app is pretty sick.
Have you guys looked at this:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157624143703396/
Search "Photo Studio Buddy" in the market or scan his QR Code.
Wow, that saved me a lot of work! LOL.
The dev of StroBox pointed it out to me. She wasn't very willing to share her source...iPhone users...go figure.
Thanks, that works pretty well. It could use some work, but it is a start for sure. I appreciate your help.
Funny title huh Seriously though, I am tired of the hit and miss of live wallpapers, and other apps working or not working on my beloved Hero, that being said what I have desperately been trying to do is learn Java(a live wallpaper not sticking when all my others do is what started this, it's dumb I know) so I can start programming things to work for our phone(or at least try). I have spent 2 days looking for a good way to learn Java, I have been all over the net hunting for an interactive Java tutorial and have come up empty handed, I found a couple PDFs as well as some online tutorials but they don't explain everything(it seems like they all assume you already know some Java or programming), I am a total beginner and need it all explained, preferably with hands on. I am a fast learner when things are explained and taught properly, I think I could excel at this, so I figure this community is the best place to ask for advice on how and where to proceed, so come on guys help me out what is the best way for a total beginner to proceed, how did you all start, where did you go for help? Again, I am only asking here because I really have spent 2 days looking for a proper tutorial and come up empty handed...THANKS!!
Oh, I can skype if some saintly person feels like teaching.
edit:this is what started my obsession http://www.mediafire.com/?jiynwdnmc1z out of the 6 I have this is the only one that wont stick, so I figured why not try to re-build it my self after comparing it to the ones that do stick(it does run perfectly, just wont stick)
Well if you are a total newbie to programming my best advice is goto your local book store or half-price books(used book store) and find a book on java programing probly too first one would be java progamming for dummies and the second one a more adavaced book go though both of them do the lesson in there and learn by doing best way to do it and then check out the froyo thread for the irc room and if you get stuck ask someone in there oh on here your direct question if you do your homework and give a detialed description of what your working on more people are going to try and help you but this is just my two cents and the extend of my attempt at advice good luck and hope to see your name on an op soon
Wow, I gotta say, I do like that lwp a lot man. Thanks for posting the link to it Good luck on learning Java man. It's not too hard, but once you start scripting with it etc... that's a whole different story, lol
It's good to see someone wants to stop putting up with stuff not working and make it work Honestly, I'd just go to your local library, and check out a bunch of stuff on Java... that's what I did with Python
It's going to take a lot of reading and trial and error to learn java. But a little heads up, the live wallpapers that don't stick, is a driver issue, not a programming issue. I don't know enough about android, so unless there is a line you can add to the header to force software rendering, you can't do much about it.

Thanks for the responses guys! I really didn't think of grabbing a Dummies book, I figured there would be a good course online, but that's what I'm going to get first thing tomorrow. I figure once I get familiar with it all(maybe a week or two) I will compare the ones that work with the one that doesn't and go from there. I think the first app I would like to work on would be a request from the forum, you guys all help and give back, I think that would be a great way to put the knowledge to good use Well, thanks again, I'm still open to more suggestions, maybe a couple weeks from now I can at least give you guys a neat wallpaper!

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but the wallpaper you are working on is a pirated upload of a paid LWP in the market. The original author of the LWP would probably be happy to help paid customers get it working.
I'm all for you learning how to code up some cool stuff for the community, and I wish you the best, but stealing other people's stuff isn't the way to go.
hmm, was not intentionally "stealing" I paid for it, the developers response is " LWP's don't work on hero, sorry" so I thought I would try to make it work for me, I'm pretty sure if I could provide a way for hero users to use it they would all gladly pay the $1 as I did, as it stands I "pirated", yet another, unusable app, hey hero users come get your free, unusable, paid app

That's cool...your OP links to a mediafire download for a paid app, so I didn't realize you knew it was paid. It's lame that the guy won't fix it, but I guess those of us slumming it on the hero have to get used to doing things ourselves, eh? Good luck to you...it is a cool LWP.
That wallpaper sticks just fine on my hero. Running Aloysius 2.1 maps version.

wow, I seriously apologize for all of this, all I wanted to do was give back to our community, I have been taking for a year plus & thought it was time to step it up a notch, I did not want to start fights, sorry, if any mods want me to take it down I will.(oh,I really paid for it, that's my mediafire account, after it didn't work I pulled it off my phone to try and work with it.) I'm getting my books now, if I get stuck I hope I can post my questions, thanks again guys!

First off theycallmegq. This site does not promote pirating anything. Read the forum rules posted by binary. Who might just ban you if your not careful.
That being said. I would highly recommend the for dummies set of books for starters. Thats what im doing with linux and programming. Also there is a book specifically on the android platform and development at the book stores as well. Last i checked in the computer at barnes and noble i think it was they were coming out with a new one i think had to do with java and android. There was also a post in here a while back about learning development after you have an understanding of the basics at least. Might want to search for that after a couple of weeks. Good luck with your adventure. Im sure the creator of the lwp wouldnt mind you helping make it better.
I think the poster used an unfortunate choice of words. If this was a site concerning iphone OS development it definately would be considered hacking. Modifying Apple OS in anyway is a NO NO! It was hard for me "At first" to get past the "Openess" of Android. Thats why we sould be screaming anytime we see E-fuses in phones (Motorola) or No sideloading of Apps (AT&T). I for one am thankful to be able to have source code to work with and a group such as this one to help out. My little hero is thankful too ... Without you guys I would have an EVO by now...
As far as Java Programming, do a search on "Java Tutorial". Theres a lot at your finger tips.
Try:
www.javapassion.com
just recently changed to a subscription based site, but first few chapters of each class are free to try and learn, even have an android class strarting at the end of the month.
That LWP works fine for me too.
As I've eben working on my own theme, I've asked a lot of questions , and (obviously) learned a ton along the way. I've been keeping a log of a lot of it, but, I was wondering if you would all be interested in an "end-all, be-all" guide to theming from scratch? With things like important file locations, tutorials on .9 pngs, decompiling and editing xml, etc. etc.? Maybe I'd even PDF it and have screenshots and everything.
Just something I've thought of, but, it's REALLY not worth it if people aren't interested, bc it'd be time-consuming.
I would definitely be interested. I have been looking for something for awhile now. I have found bits and pieces haven't been able to put it all together and figure it out. I have an app I have been trying to theme to match the clock I am using and cannot get it right. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
This is what happens when I try to theme SwitchPro widget.

Yes, I don't have time to figure it out on my own like you did. So that would be pretty fly.
Hey dmoses, go ahead and attach that .9 png you did for the background of switchpro, and I'll fix it for you real quick.
uhm that would be awesome ive tried changing a bunch of things on my phone on to find out that maybe half ever work and not knowing why lol
I'd love to see this too. I was spoiled with theming for the Palm Pre & would love to get into theming for Android now.
I am always open to answering questions about theming. If I can anyway.
Personally, I learned a lot of my android business from SDX-Developers. There a bunch of us brainstormed and basically relearned android. We pulled a lot of info from XDA yes. And for that I am greatful. However, since so much had to be relearned, a lot of info is documented in the forum. And most devs are still active so getting a response to a question, or at least someone to bounce ideas off of, is pretty easy. Android across the board is very similar no matter what device.
I would first recommend google search being that there are a ton more forums beyond xda with information. SDX is where I usually go for more technical questions or discussion, but then again it is where all the Moment users went when XDA shunned us.
Documentation is key if you want to remain open source so the mods can be used or altered for future use.
+1 Great idea

I'd like to introduce everyone to a new website that I have created.
http://gtabfans.com
I have tried to create a website that will encompass as much information about the gTablet as possible. On this website you will find information about the firmwares, an installation guide (more to come soon, this represents a lot of work so far!), the market fix and a wiki with some very topical information.
I was getting a little tired of sifting through ages of forum posts to find out if a specific application would work, so I have created the Application and Game pages on the wiki.
I don't intend for this to take away from the community at xda-developers, I really like the atmosphere that we have created here. As such, there is no forum at gTab Fans. I simply want a nicer way of indexing the data available to us.
I am also looking for help. If you are interested in helping write guides, let me know!
I like it! Maybe it will help with the repetitive questions... Thanks for doing this....

Right now I need help getting people to stop using the app/game thread and start using the wiki. If you want to help fill in some applications that you've tried, that'd be great.
Looks good! I suggest adding section for stock TNT, for those who don't want to go the modded route.
Jim
I added this section yesterday. Good suggestion.
I'm looking for more suggestions, I will be adding TnT Lite and CyanogenMod installation guides. These should be pretty much the same.
Great Site!!
Downloading Dungeon Defenders as we speak. I had no idea about the game till I saw it in the game section.
I registered and added some games and apps that I have used on my gtab. let me know if you need any help as I am a web designer.
Gtab fan site
Great idea
Very helpfull especially for newbies like me.
I have to apolagize I tried to add some games and I think I may have accidentally deleted some info.
I am obviously not a programmer but if there is anything i can help with let me know.
Wyngnut
No worries, that's what wiki history is for
I'll probably code a php or python script that lets users add a game and it just stores it somewhere in a database and then I can add them in batches.
This would give the users who feel comfortable editing the wiki directly that option and the form for people who aren't so comfortable.
Thanks
Yeah I went back and It was corrected so I added games and didn't screw anything up this time. I will keep updating it and checking it. I am curious to see if there are any more unreal engine games like Dungeon Defenders on the horizon.
Wyngnut
We now have a game/application form. Simply fill out the fields and I'll post it to the Wiki after I make sure no one was abusing it.
Thanks! Great site.
Man awesome site....It was just what I personally needed to decide on what firmware to switch too, I just got done flashing my g tab to tnt lite 2.2 then 3.1, but after seeing the write up on Vegan, I had to flash to it and man if anyone is deciding, IMHO Vegan is amazing....so much faster than tnt and has soft tab buttons for the home, back and options button so u no longer have to struggle or mod your tab find them again what a great website and idea. Really has the most common things that will help out newbs like myself, great job and keep up the good work, I would offer to help but being new I don't know how much help I would be, but if I can be any help email me at [email protected]
Thanks for all the positive comments!
Curious but what's wrong w/ the tegratab wiki? http://wiki.tegratab.com/index.php/Main_Page
Seems like you have all the same sections, accessories, roms, apps, etc wouldn't want people to call us 'fragmented' now would ya .
This wiki was created as more of a Games/Apps "database" than anything.. I agree, the tetratab wiki is quite good.
I like the idea of having a quick reference to what can and can't run on the Gtab. I've added a few games that I know work on Vegan B5.
Sorry if it's been asked but is there a way to register to the site. Be nice to avoid using Capatcha (sp?)
Hey my name is Scott and ive been using ROMs from this website for awhile now and well lets face it i think im addicted to flashing new ROMs... either that or im determined to turn my infuse into a brick. . Anyways, besides the introduction i wanted to take a moment to personally thank each and every developer on this site and especially the ones in the infuse section for making my phone 20x better then it ever could be. Its amazing what you guys come up with. I really appreciate the hard work and dedication. With all this being said, I would absolutely love to learn how to do this. As far as programming goes, i havent done anything since the days of VB3 . So... Would any of the awesome developers out there want to mentor a newb?? I would be very grateful if someone could teach me what i need to know and maybe one day develop my own ROM.
First off, thank you as well. Without out flashers our work would be virtually worthless
Secondly, before starting development take a day to sit down and really research articles on this site. The more knowledge you have before hand will put you a head of the game. Once you have basic knowledge, pick a base rom. One that you feel would be best for what you want to build. Download that rom. Download nunhuggers apktool, the necessary Java development tools. Decompile the rom and take a while to look through it, and kind of get an understanding of how things work within the rom. That would be the best starting point.
Also when developing your own rom, before you release it take time to make sure everything is in working order, releasing a half broken rom is no good, releasing a solid, stable rom is aces. I'd you need anything I will gladly answer any questions I can, and help in anyway I can. Most senior devs would be glad to help as well, very good community we have here.

Thank you for your response and advice. I have briefly gone over guides and documents ive found just by doing a general google search and of course from this site also. It looks kind of complex, but im sure your suggestion of taking a day and sitting down to decompile it and take a good look would really put things into perspective.
When i do a search for nunhuggers apktool, it just comes up with a tutorial video? Is this what your referring to or is there an actual download that im missing?
Thanks for the offer to help if i need it... I have a feeling ill definitely be taking you up on that. I have noticed just from downloading ROMs and general observations on this forum that everyone seems pretty awesome and are willing to help. Glad to have finally joined and posted.

Not to discourage, just giving you some advice, it is allot of work for even little things, I say down and tried to edit the 2.3.6 and add a simple extended power menu, took me 30 mins at least and I didn't even get to test it, wouldn't re compile for some reason, again not to discourage, just trying to give you some insight into what's needed

The first time you run it it will go througb the installation process and it will get you just about everything you need...
-dsixda's android rom kitchen (great for decompiling a rom and recompilimg a rom)
-apktool (for decompiling apks...this tool is neccesary for development if you want to add tweaks and mods)
-simple adb interface (has a list of options, choose what you want and it does the code for you)
Has some other stuff too but thats the main stuff
I have it on my linux computer and it runs great!

if you download ubuntu, it has an installation option where you install it in and along side windows, and it will ask you which to boot into when turning you computer on, very useful

Hello and a quick tip! Before setting up your Linux box make sure that ALL of your hardware/peripherals are supported by the Linux distribution you choose. You can see a list of all your hardware in windows by typing "device manager" in the search box. If you find that all your hardware is supported, have fun .
