Ringtones too quiet! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I bought a new sprint nexus s 4g for my wife(rescuing her from her blackberry)and the problem is that all her ringtones and notifications are so quiet she misses calls and texts. She is not interested in rooting her phone, any suggestions on what I can do to make her tones louder?
Any suggestions?

on certain tones, ive increased the gain on the files with audacity. then copy them to usb storage. folders on root called ringtones and notifications.

Thanks for the quick reply, does the phone have to have root to use this method?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

nah. just mount usb storage, create folders, named ringtones, notifications. then modify the sound sound files with audacity. export as mp3. then drag and drop them to the appropriate folders.

Thanks.

I have an easier way for you.
Nifty little APK that really boosts the sound and makes sound AMAZING when you combine with voodoo.

Oh yeah, it's low. I missed an alarm the other day. I never missed one with my EVO.

I completely agree with you. The speaker on this phone leaves much to be desired.

Volume+ fixes it all for me.

Guys be careful you don't set it too loud and blow the speaker

Call quality?

sorry if has been answered. Ived looked around here. Anyone ever have someone complain when their talking to them on the phone that they sound muffled or robotic? Or even underwater sound? I have full bars and all. So I don't see what's up with that? Anyone have same issues or how to resolve it?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I don't think I've ever heard that
This phone has the best call quality I've ever had

Weird. Well I called big red and they did something. My prl is now just 1 instead of that 15***. I had it changed to 13*** before but never seen just 1. But now my call quality is awesome... I can hear better
Meant to put this on the q&a

I have the same issue with sound on the other end being muffled, and others have trouble hearing me also. How would I go about changing my PRL to 1 to try it out?
You can't VZW has to.

I've had this problem from day 1. A bunch of different techs from VZW have looked into it and changed stuff on the backend and still no luck. :-(

I haven't noticed any issues and I got the phone on launch day.
Here is a thread on Android Central that we've been trying to do some testing about this issue:

I have been told that the voice quality isn't the best by some people but I have listened to a voicemail I left on someones phone and it sounded fine to me.

[Q] Custom ringtone not looping?

I am wondering if there is a fix for this and am completely puzzled why Samsung and/or Google took this feature away on the Nexus...
So I threw in a couple of custom ringtones into my media/audio/ringtones folder in the Nexus S but noticed that the phone wouldn't loop the ringtones! Its rather annoying having it ring just once and stop. I understand there's programs that will loop the mp3 file a couple of times before I throw it in the folder but come on...that process shouldn't even be necessary...
Really weird...
Awesome ringtone included.
i saw a thread about it, but i guess only 4g devices were affected. as far as i remember, in that thread a sollution was not found, the OP just created a custom ringtone that loop by itself! =o)
Could just get a mp3 trimmer, make it last as long as it rings.
I have an nsg4, don't have this problem, might want to call your service support.

Waaaait a minute...you're saying that your custom ringtones loops without a problem? Even if you put it in the media/audio/ringtones folder???
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I just saved audio clips from pic messages, looked in ringtones and they were there. But considering these models arnt consistent as far as functioning, might just be a glitch in my phone. Try getting a ringtone maker that has options for loop, and access your audio files through the app.
Like i said, might just be a glitch in my phone.

I feel like I can be helpful for once. It will loop ringtones if you convert the mp3 to OGG format, and in the file info (you can edit this in Winamp for example), create a field called ANDROID_LOOP and set the value to TRUE.
Have a NS4G. Looping the instrumental from Yeah3X as current ringtone.

[Audio Mod][WIP]New Project Linda for SGS4G

I'm looking at redoing the whole project Linda. Same voice just different words. Let me know what you all would want to hear Linda saying when you receive a text, im, email, phone call, startup sound, ect. Once I get a good enough idea of what everyone wants I'll create a flashable zip
Sent from my SGH-T959V
I'm waiting on a response from angryattheworld with his reverb settings so that I can get the "new" linda sounding just like the "old" Linda
Hmm, haven't seen the first one yet. Does this work on a froyo rom?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
The original is a couple of threads down from this one. I'll link to it. The original was designed for the Vibrant but most of the sounds work for the SGS4g and was created for Froyo. I'd design this one for to GB.
Oringinal SGS4g thread

I'll start working on this very soon. Just started my new network engineering job so I don't have as much free time as I had. I'm looking for a good statement for the startup sound. Anyone got one?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I never liked the shutdown sound with the old package and always used the shutdown from ravers bump in the trunk room she said "galaxy system shut Dow n initiated systems offline" or something. Do an inversion like"startup sequence initiated systems online". I also wish the notifications were shorter. Do "incoming text", incoming (whatever)" and do one for a generic/default notification the old one lacked that. Not trying to be picky but you asked for suggestions. Like I said Linda can say whatever she wants

A linda project for GB roms would be AWESOME!!!!! Linda instead of bootloader sounds, and for notifications....this would be awesome. My girl calls my phone Linda, it's kinda jealous of the time i spend on the computer, messing with my phone, but mostly a joke....This would be GREAT!!!
AWESOME!!! I took the ZIP and unzipped it. Then I Replaced the files in my system using the root explorer, with the files in the "Linda.zip" folder, and vioala!!!!
Now, if anyone knows how I can add audio to the boot animation,I have read a ton of posts through searching to no avail let me know...
also this is the voice of the computer "Vicki" from IRobot. How can I get this voice, and manipulate it for a boot animation phrase?
It's called PowerOn.wav . make sure the size its equal to or less than the original and the quality level is exactly the same or it won't work.

He added some special effects to the Linda voice that I'm trying to mock but I can't get the reverb to sound good like he did, the plain "Old-Robot Linda" voice sounds like crap without any reverb to it.

Notification sound?

Since I'm growing tired of the baked in tones, I'd like to hear which ones all of you like. Hoping we can share the files through here as well. So, what's your favorite notification tone?
Excuse me boss, from zedge
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah zedge is a good app for ringtones/notifications unless you use a song you like..but with notifications I like to just keep it simple with some catchy tone
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've had the same notification tone for texts for about 5 years now. It's a cougar growl/roar. Nobody else has it that I know, so I know it's definitely my phone that went off. Also it's funny to see the reactions of people when they hear it go off lol. Always along the lines of "there's a cougar in your pants!"
I have the Dexter ringtone from zedge. It's a really good app.

Awesome ideas, just what I was hoping for. Thanks button for all.
+1 for Zedge. I have a few different sounds downloaded, and some songs. I don't switch up too often, but it's a great app for getting what you want. I'd avoid "fart noise" type notifications unless you're under 12 and/or are determined to be single NOT by your choice.

PonGo brings Sprint Surrond Sound Mod

Well, someone posted the surround sound mod in themes. It was nice but not perfect. It actually didn't allow fmradio to work and only allowed sound through headphones on wifi calling. So, I fixed it so that it now works properly. HUGE THANKS to @sshafranko for the original mod. Without much fanfare here is the

Cool!
I just got a Note 4 and still debating on keeping it due to its size (coming from a 2013 Moto X) so I haven't rooted yet. This is something I plan to do if I keep it, though.
Any danger of it blowing the front earpiece?

Just rooted and getting everything set up how I would like it. Getting ready to apply this mod, but had another (probably dumb) question: it can be reverted to normal by just replacing the stock mixer_paths.xml, right?
Edit: this is a really great mod! Helps alot when watching videos to get some sound actually coming straight at you.
